My youngest got a color streak in the front. No idea why I spend the money on this, other than it excites her as much as Christmas morning. I am grateful I can do these types of things. My older daughter, however, had grown her hair to her butt...beautiful, wavy, full, high-maintenance hair that had become her signature. I swear other kids followed her around just to see the hair flow in the air as she walked and smell the flowery products that helped keep such tresses in check. But too much work and she decided to get it cut--a lot. Jeff counseled her during an impromptu stop on a Saturday afternoon, describing how he'd do the work and that he understood how much her hair was a part of her, her personality and that this was a scary endeavor...he eased my mind during that consult. Three days later, she was in the chair. After the shock of the first cuts--culminating is a good-sized donation for Pantene's Beautiful Lengths program--the scariness faded and a wonderful, light, bouncy cut emerged. The hair was shaped well, taken to a perfect length (accounting for hundreds of curls), and clear instruction on how to care for the new style (no heavy product push) was given through the process. I left with a very happy, very energized 13-year old who appeared to have entered a new phase of her life. Altered Image is owned and operated by great people, doing great work, with passion, empathy, a true sense of caring, and a healthy dose of fun. I may have no hair, but I'll be happy to take my girls here any time. This is the Durham I love.

I'm still going to keep their star average up though because of how they handled it when i reached out after. I know the problem was the their booking system was configured wrong and matched me with someone who couldn't do it. They were nice, gave me a refund and it and promised to fix the software configuration. I wasn't going anywhere for the next couple weeks anyway. I'm sure the kid knows to just say "sorry, I can't do men's hair" next time. I don't have API access but trust her JSON object no longer returns 'mens' and they're not using XML for anything either. I paid for my service tip and all $231.00 and when I got home and washed it the same say the color rinsed out .It was yellow and orange and it looked like a had a bad clairol bottle. I knew she had taken them off to soon, I have been doing highlights for 30 years, I called and made another appointment for the following Sat Feb. 1st. I repeated what I wanted and did not want , I am not that kind of person to be unkind to people. However at the end of the process it was again what I had not asked for, completely dark. I was unhappy. Even though it was not what I even expected, I paid gave her tip $242.00 and left. When I washed my hair the next day again it rinsed out and it was yellow and orange and brassy with shades of ash here and there. It is a complete mess, I SHOULD OF NEVER PAID BUT LIKE I SAOD I AM NOT THAT PESON WHO DOES THINGS LIKE THAT. i TEXTED HER AND NEVER GOT A TEXT BACK, TOLD HER I WANTED MYMONEY BACK ATOLEAST THIS 2ND TIME. They hire inexperienced young girls and this is what happens. the COMPANY OWNER could care less, they got there money. I should of read the reviews to know this. NEVER AGAIN. I had been seeing Panduh for vivid/fantasy hair color and was willing to overlook early red flags…read more-- until my third visit went so poorly, I was left with severely banded color, no resolution, and ultimately dropped as a client after voicing my concerns. A quick rewind: My first appointment resulted in chunky, uneven highlights around my face instead of a well-blended money piece. The second time, it blended better -- but the color wasn't applied close enough to my scalp, leaving a visible blond halo. I chalked it up to a learning curve and gave her a third shot. Her salon setup doesn't help: it's dimly lit, with black walls and a single window behind the chair -- great for her to see your hair, but you're completely backlit in the mirror, meaning you can't clearly see the results until you're in normal lighting. (In hindsight, that feels intentional.) At this last appointment, I came in with faded pink and brown roots, expecting a simple root bleach and color refresh. Instead, I left with a huge band of lighter pink across the middle of my head and a harsh transition to darker pink below. I didn't see it until I got home and looked in a properly lit mirror. When I texted photos and asked if she could fix it, she admitted she saw the banding -- but refused to fix it. Her excuse? That the appointment was too short and I "needed seven hours instead of five." Worth noting: I never book my own time. I always call and have her team schedule me, since they know my hair length and needs. She then pivoted, saying I don't come in "regularly enough" for my "color goals" (something she'd never mentioned before). I told her I would've adjusted my visits if that expectation had been communicated. Again, she refused to make it right -- and then fired me as a client. For reference: I was a $700-per-visit client. If this is how she treats someone investing that much, I can't imagine the experience for anyone spending less. If you still choose to go: pay with a solid credit card. Thankfully, mine sided with me and issued a full refund after seeing the photos and text thread. _____________________ Edited to add, in response to the salon's reply (8.12.25): To clarify a few things mentioned, for additional transparency: Again, I booked by phone every time so your team could allot enough time for my long, vivid-treated hair. I never used the online system. I never asked for any clients to be moved around. I never chose the length of my service. The first appointment was not fully corrected -- just a darker overlay added to blend the harsh bleach, which faded. I didn't push the issue and was never offered or given a refund, ever. Nor did I reach out about the issues with my second appointment; I fixed it myself. The lighting in the salon makes it very difficult to assess the results before leaving -- whether one black wall or not, the fact of the matter is Panduh's space is dim and backlit. I communicated calmly and respectfully, shared photos, and simply asked for the banding to be fixed. You acknowledged it and declined. Then dropped me as a client. If you're going to respond, please include the full context. I am.

Well, that's Esther, all the way! All of the staff is incredibly friendly and the vibe of the Salon is super homey. The owner Panduh is super generous and is clearly invested in the Queer & Trans community. I feel lucky to have found them, and hope to see them whenever I'm in Durham. Super bummed I'll be on the road too much to get my hair cut there every time.
