Do yourself a favor and get your next haircut at Arrow Studio. It's in a prime location in downtown Durham, and has a chic, open feel that reminds me of New York City (which is where the owners are from). The waiting area has a gigantic chandelier, and the front desk is made from a wooden art piece that also serves as a product shelf and changing rooms-- you have to see it to believe it. But you can't mention Arrow Studio without talking about how fantastic Tiffany is. She used to cut my hair at her last employer before opening Arrow Studio, and I happily followed her, even though my drive is a bit longer now. It's worth it. Arrow Studio has custom-designed units at each haircut station that houses all the stylists' equipment, but also has a pull-out shelf for any personal items you bring (sunglasses, cell phone, etc.). There's also a coat rack near the front, which seems mundane, but I can't remember the last time I went to get a haircut and actually had someone take my coat. It's the little details that matter. The biggest downside is that parking in downtown Durham can be a doozy. But don't worry! There are two parking decks right beside Arrow, and you can get your ticket validated after your haircut. I have nothing but fantastic things to say about this place! I am from NYC, and was visiting my parents for the weekend, and had originally booked somewhere else in Durham to do a dry cut and balayage and was called 45 mins before my appointment to be told it was cancelled. After doing some research, I called Arrow when it first opened at 9am to see if they could squeeze me in that day and lo and behold, they had space! My appointment was with Alex who is a Level 1 but honestly, if I didn't know that going into the appointment, I would have never known. She took the time to listen to exactly what I wanted, was super understanding and made me feel so comfortable in her chair. When it came to my cut, I had asked to dry cut it (I have naturally curly hair and I prefer stylists to cut it when it's straightened as that's how I normally have it styled), and it turned out perfectly. She kept my length, cut off the dry ends and it looks exactly as I want it to. The color - literally WOW. I have dark hair and I wanted something subtle and natural but still fun, and she did just that. I have never left any salon so happy and thrilled with how my hair looks. Alex, you are a gem and so fun to spend 3 hours with! My hair turned out so well, I will literally fly in from New York just to have her do it again. I was hoping for a better experience from Arrow Studio. The salon was overwhelmingly bright and I've been having severe migraine tension headaches and didn't expect for a salon to exacerbate it....unfortunately it did. I must not have communicated what I wanted well enough to the stylist because she took off way more than I expected she would. I felt devastated when I got home and I'm still recovering. I know that we give consent once we are in the chair but what was I supposed to do? Walk out and say I feel sick mid haircut and come back tomorrow when the setting is less overwhelming? The booking assistant didn't understand at all and was pretty rude to me. Apparently the owner of this salon thinks that all social situations have a specific set of rules that we have to adhere to and that her stylists deserve to be compensated for their time even if the product paid for is much less than an ideal outcome. If you've ever had to grow out a tragic haircut, you know how scary it is to get even a little trim. Well, after five whole years of growing mine out and the DIY trim I attempted during quarantine, suffice it to say my hair was in dire need of divine intervention. Thankfully, Linda provided exactly that! She listened to all of my fears, wants, ideas, and questions, and gave me detailed suggestions for how to make me feel happy with my hair again. We concluded that I needed to chop off at least three inches, which made me nervous, but that quickly dissipated as she worked her magic. She even went so far as to have me point out which face framing hairs I leave out of my ponytail so that she could intentionally trim and shape each one - I've never had anyone care that much before! It's been years since I walked out of a salon feeling so stoked on a haircut. I didn't even miss the length we had to cut off, because my hair looks so much healthier, fuller, bouncier - and it feels infinitely softer. I've been going here for a few months now. After returning back to NC I went back to where I used to go for a haircut and after a couple of experiences was not happy with both the haircuts. I do media, including tv and film, as well as public speaking, so in addition to just generally wanting to look good, I need to look good, or at least not have my hair be a distraction so that people don't listen to me. I've now seen Abby four times, and each time I have been very happy with my haircut. Abby takes the time to cut my hair with scissors, rather than clippers, and it really makes a difference. My haircut doesn't just look better, but I it lasts longer. My hair may not be as exciting or as challenging as some of the other cuts Abby does, she really is an artist, but it looks good to me, is helpful for my work and it makes me feel happy and confident. The salon is modern and clean. Everyone who works there is friendly and professional, so while I recommend Abby, I have a feel you're going to get a good haircut from anyone at Arrow. I should note I tried this salon because I am often in Durham, however my last two haircuts, I wasn't scheduled to be in Durham, but I was happy to drive the 22 miles to get my hair cut here. I called in to see if there was an appointment available for a haircut and they had one. I asked to get 4-6 inches cut off with layers and a face frame. I'm pretty sure the hairstylist was new because I got a cut that is straight, no layovers and face frame that doesn't connect the haircut from the front and back. Extremely disappointed. I have been coming to arrow for the past 4 years now and had always been impressed until my recent visit last month. Having not gone for a while I was shocked by how much an establishment can change so quickly. When I arrived I was told to put a cloak on but was not told where they were. Then I was offered no beverage. Once I sat down it turned out reception had booked me in under the wrong sort of appointment (but that was fine). My hairdresser made little to no conversation with me, clearly wanting to get the job done as fast as possible and was a little dismissive with what I wanted done, didn't really talk it through with me. Once my hair had been washed she sat me down back in the chair and said her next appointment had arrived so someone else was going to have to take over. This was fine. As this women starts blowing out my hair though, I am then told (not asked) to move seats to make room for the next person. Why couldn't she have just done his hair in another chair? Once I had moved the hair was blown out and it was honestly the worst blow out I'd ever had. I asked for loose curls, and there was about one "loose curl" and my hair looked like I had had nothing done to it. I came home and straightened it because it looked so awful (which you shouldn't have to do after a visit). In addition to the awful blow out, the woman also managed to hit me with the hairbrush in the face when blowing it out (never had that happen before) and not really what you want to happen. The color was also not what I wanted, having had such great color done there before I was shocked to see how off the mark this woman had done it. Throughout my whole visit I was made to feel like an inconvenience. I was never asked if I wanted a drink, and considering I was in there for hours that might have been nice. I was made to feel as if I was inconveniencing them. I left with an awful color, and awful blow out, and feeling pretty down about the way I had been treated. I got my hair cut from Alex, she is a level 1 with about 5-7 years of experience but she is amazing. She took a few minutes to talk about my hair before she began and explained what products she was using on my hair as she proceeded to shampoo and cut my hair. At the end she added finishing touches and made sure I was happy. She is so personable and I'm glad to say I think I've found my new hair dresser. The only reason I'm giving this hair studio a 4 star and not 5 is because I did not have a good experience the last time I was here with a hair dresser (Alyssa) that charges a lot more for a hair cut and didn't even care to add products to my hair or blow dry with a hair brush the way I wanted her to. She claimed that she wanted to do my hair a certain way so I was able to do it on my own the same way at home. She literally just ran the blow dryer against my hair without a brush and twisted the hair with her fingers. I didn't think that was worth $70. I asked for bangs and they were all uneven. She overall just half-assed the hair cut. I returned to the salon to give other hair stylists a chance and I'm glad that I did. read more

I went in today for a haircut. It was the most expensive haircut I have ever had. When I called to make the appointment the admin told me they schedule a first appointment for 1 1/2 hours so there is time for me to talk to talk about my hair. (Naturally they charge for the time so a cut cost 50% more.) Give me a break...I can say everything that needs to be said about my hair in under 2 minutes. Very pretentious, in keeping with the price. I got home and took a good look in the mirror and the front of my hair is radically different right to left. Alyssa is super. Had another stylist there but she was too cool for school. Tried her out 3 times but not a good match and hair outcome was not worth the somewhat negative experience. I don't need to be entertained, but would prefer to feel less dismissed. Every time time I call to schedule or reschedule, whoever picks up is also too cool for school; bordering rude. Anaïs is an incredible stylist. I looked for a really long time to find a stylist who made me comfortable and also would best help with my texture of hair and hair goals. Anaïs truly listened to all my goals and dreams and exceeded all expectations and made me fall absolutely in love with myself. I started getting my haircut with Tiffany before she and Glen opened Arrow and when I found out she left, panic surged through my body! I was so happy they put me in touch with her so I could continue to receive the ABSOLUTE best haircuts I've ever had. I have curly, thick hair that I like to wear straight often and I'm a little nuts about my bangs, but Tiffany always nails it! I also had my first color with Tiffany in December 2016 and she's continued to do an amazing job with that as well. Also, my mother just moved from NY with some difficult hair to manage and after trying a few other stylists in the area, she finally went to Tiffany and was so annoyed she didn't go sooner because no one had ever done such a great job. I literally cannot describe how fantastic of an experience I had at Arrow! After a particularly disappointing coloring at another local salon, I was frustrated and anxious looking for a new colorist. I have an abundance of very dark, very curly ethnic hair and most places I consulted obviously were unfamiliar with how to work with it, and some pretty rudely turned me away at the door. But from the second I walked into Arrow, I was greeted very warmly by the receptionist who was beyond kind and accommodating. My stylist was Glen. I again can't compliment him or his talent enough. He was exceptionally friendly and really went above and beyond to help. He understood my hair and exactly what color I was going for and was just as determined as I was to make it work. And the results ended up better than I could have ever dreamed! The salon is beautiful and everyone in it is absolutely lovely! I will never get hair service anywhere else. So happy I found Arrow!! I went here for a keratin straightening treatment with Glen and from now on I will never go anywhere else in the Triangle. I'm a keratin addict/veteran so I know who is good and bad and I can say that Glen is in the stellar category. Very thorough and careful with the application, slow drying and meticulous ironing and then a cut after the straightening to make sure it all looks amazing when you walk out. As for the space, it is very new, modern and functional. And it seems like they all love what they do and are really experienced at it - best combination ever. Prices are not the cheapest you'll find but not exorbitant either and so far from what I've seen you get a high quality service. I'll be back to try other services as needed, yay! read more

I will admit, I was a little bummed when my stylist of about 2 years moved from Chapel Hill to Durham, as it would be much less convenient for me have a before or after work appointment. However, Kristen is amazing so I followed! The first time I went to Arrow Studio, I had my mom with me. I treated her to a salon day for Christmas since she often just colors her own hair to cover the grays. The salon was very well decorated and relaxing, and they had infused water that we became hooked on after! All of the staff members were friendly and accommodating and unlike other salons they do not overbook. Kristen was able to completely transform years of bad dye jobs on my mom's hair and made her look amazing! I decided to go darker for the first time in years, and could not have been more happy with the results! I have been back to Kristen since, and she has done an amazing job like always! She has the talent to be able to know what I need more than I do, but also always listens to what I am thinking. I have naturally dishwater brown hair, so it must be colored, but I am very particular about it looking natural and not over-processed, and that is not something you have to worry about with Kristen. I have never left an appointment with her feeling disappointed! My hair is also longer and healthier than it has ever been! I have not seen any of the other stylists there, but from reading the other reviews, it sounds like you couldn't make a bad choice at Arrow! read more

Highly recommended. Tiffany came recommended to me through a friend in New York , who among other good qualities, has great hair. I have just moved from NYC to Durham and had to replace my outrageously priced (but worth it!), celebrity filled salon with something local. I'm happy to report I will be saving on plane fare from now on. Before you go judging on my willingness to drop that kind of cash on my hair, you should know that I leave these things to the PROS for a reason. I have no idea what to do with my hair ever. I don't own a blow dryer. So I rely on a great cut and color to do what I am unwilling to- which is manage my hair beyond 15 seconds of brushing it after a shower. My expectation from a haircut these days is that I wake up looking ready to go with no effort. And that the cut will tide me over for 4-6 months. Probably not an easy feat from a stylist, but Tiffany delivers. And their prices are way more than reasonable, so plane fare isnt the only thing I'll be saving on. Salon itself is gorgeous, and everyone in it is fun and friendly. Probably the best cut I've had in many years between NYC, LA, Aspen and Miami. I easily found street parking. Arrow Studio is hands down the best hair salon in Durham, and it's staff all top-notch. Opened by a very talented duo, Tiffany and Glen, they thankfully brought all their Brooklyn hipness with them to Durham to set up shop. I've had the pleasure of having my hair cut/colored by both Tiffany and Kristen. Tiffany does amazing work, as one would expect. She has a wonderful eye for stylish cuts, but is understandably harder to book. As for Kristen? She is simply amazing, from personality to talent. I am very discerning with the level of blonde in my hair (more blonde, please!), and I have often walked away disappointed from hair appointments with color-shy stylists. Not so with Kristen. In my very first appointment with her, she quickly picked up on what I was looking for and proceeded confidently with cut and color, giving me a beautiful blonde balayage. My hair has never looked so healthy. From what I've seen, Brad also does amazing, amazing color. On top of this, Arrow has a super friendly staff of assistants and receptionists. I've lost count of how many times I've called to switch around my appointment, but every request has been dealt with graciously and with ease. I have super curly hair that's really hard to style, but Brad at Arrow knows what he's doing when it comes to curly hair, and he gave me the best cut and style I've ever had. Love this new salon in downtown Durham! It has an awesome, swanky atmosphere. Receptionist greets you at the door, serves you beverage, makes you feel very comfortable. I had my hair done by Chanel. Best haircut I've had in years. Her consult with me was A+ and really impressive-- she actually walked with me through my hair care process and identified some issues/solutions. Never had a stylist actually do that. She definitely cares about her clients. For the quality of cut and the experience, the price of ~$70 is totally worth it. Love it here. I'm super particular when it comes to my hair and was scared to try somewhere new after visiting the same salon for years. I've been twice, once for cut/color and once for just a cut, and was equally pleased both times. Stephanie 100 percent listened to what I wanted and did an amazing job cutting off six-ish inches from my hair the first time around. I'm a little skeptical of the negative reviews because those don't reflect my experiences at Arrow in the least. All hair salons have late policies (that's how it goes... and as someone who is chronically late, I get it -- they have an obligation to protect their stylists' time while also ensuring they gave their clients adequate service). I moved with Tiffany from Citrine when she opened Arrow Studio. I love her hair cuts. But the front desk management at Arrow is completely incompetent. I quit going there because they messed up my appointments after I made the drive from Chapel Hill. But I scheduled again recently because I had a special event and wanted a really great haircut. The appointment was made weeks in advance. The afternoon before the appointment I got a phone call saying they were too busy and Tiffany isn't accepting new customers (even though I was a 3-year customer). I've read that others have the same problem--not the stylists but rude, incompetent front desk. read more

I have never wanted so much to like an establishment due to the high ratings and been so disappointed by its customer service and treatment of clients. Arrow Studio is that place. Studio looks great in person. But the customer service - from the receptionist booking your appointment to the hairstylist's rudeness to the manager (?) - has been consistently terrible in my 3-4 interactions with this place. I tried to like this place, I tried. Today, I drove 1.5 hour round trip to make it to a hair color appointment in anticipation for my 1-year wedding anniversary trip tomorrow, which I shared with the hairstylist who cut my hair. I was squarely canceled on the spot after receiving a call. I was running late by 15 minutes and coming from far; I was really sorry for running late but was four minutes away, literally flooring it to the parking garage. The woman on the phone rudely said, "Oh - so you're not even parked yet? I'm sorry but we're going to have to reschedule you for another day." I didn't know what to say. I apologized and said I was four minutes away. At least try to give me a grace period, or relay your strict business rule in a nicer way. I declined rescheduling, to the woman's surprise. She didn't care, didn't bother to make things right, as her tone to me expressed how disposable I am as a customer, and we ended things right there. I'm relieved from dodging a bullet and saving hard-earned $200 on a balayage, simply because I feel this studio was rude, uncompromising, and unfriendly. From the beginning to end, below are my red flags with this place: 1) The young female receptionist who booked my haircut for last Saturday raised her voice at me when demanding my FIRST name and "NOT my last name." The tone was rude from the start, but I gave the studio the benefit of the doubt. 2) The male hairstylist was very cold and unfriendly and couldn't seem to find the energy to smile or appear to enjoy his job. I felt very on edge the entire time. I had also requested balayage when I scheduled but it seemed too short notice or wasn't booked so he flatly told me it wasn't gonna happen that day, which made me re-schedule it for today, and again, it didn't happen. Regardless, I tipped well. 3) The woman who called me to reschedule my balayage, when I was minutes away, turned me off and ended the ordeal once and for all. You guys-I want to love Arrow Studio. Went in for a color with their apprentice and had a great experience. But the color was not what I had wanted, so I spoke with the owner who suggested waiting a few weeks for it settle and then call back to get it fixed if I wanted. Waited 6 weeks, called back to ask about scheduling/pricing for the change and someone told me they would call me back. A week later I emailed asking for an update-I'd even be happy to pay for it since it was a free color with the apprentice. It's been 10 days and no one has responded. However, the stylist turned my blond hair brassy and also double-booked the appointment. I was really scared to try yet another new place, but I had heard great things about Arrow and desperately wanted my natural looking, light blond color back. I booked an appointment with Stephanie, and could not be happier with the results! She listened to exactly what I wanted and gave me a very pretty, natural blond. After spending months searching for the right salon, I finally came across Arrow Studio. I read review after review and finally decided to call the salon and set up an appointment with Glen. I must admit I was nervous at first. I haven't had my haircut outside of DC ever and after my color mishap you better believe I was praying hard that my haircut didn't turn out like my color with another salon. Kristin did an amazing color. The ambiance is great. All in all a really enjoyable experience and I live, love, love my hair!
