Highly recommend stylist Meesha- she understands my hair better than I do! Rescued my hair from super dryness and hydrated it back to gorgeous curls. My head felt so much better and lighter and well massaged. Interior is beautiful!!! Full of plants and artwork for sale. As a plant scientist, the plants are my favourite part - they add a very nice relaxing vibe. The complimentary services are awesome - tea or coffee or wine or water while you wait or while you get your hair done! All the stylists are very friendly but also not overly social if you're not feeling that type of way -which I really appreciate on those days you read more

So, these folks have been doing my wife's hair for a few years and she's been totally happy, but she doesn't Yelp and I am not going to speak for her :) And I have no hair, so my perspective is heavily influenced by how things have gone at Altered Image for my daughters, and last night, I was convinced these folks are caring, empathetic and take their craft seriously. My youngest got a color streak in the front. No idea why I spend the money on this, other than it excites her as much as Christmas morning. I am grateful I can do these types of things. My older daughter, however, had grown her hair to her butt...beautiful, wavy, full, high-maintenance hair that had become her signature. I swear other kids followed her around just to see the hair flow in the air as she walked and smell the flowery products that helped keep such tresses in check. But too much work and she decided to get it cut--a lot. Jeff counseled her during an impromptu stop on a Saturday afternoon, describing how he'd do the work and that he understood how much her hair was a part of her, her personality and that this was a scary endeavor...he eased my mind during that consult. Three days later, she was in the chair. After the shock of the first cuts--culminating is a good-sized donation for Pantene's Beautiful Lengths program--the scariness faded and a wonderful, light, bouncy cut emerged. The hair was shaped well, taken to a perfect length (accounting for hundreds of curls), and clear instruction on how to care for the new style (no heavy product push) was given through the process. I left with a very happy, very energized 13-year old who appeared to have entered a new phase of her life. Altered Image is owned and operated by great people, doing great work, with passion, empathy, a true sense of caring, and a healthy dose of fun. I may have no hair, but I'll be happy to take my girls here any time. This is the Durham I love. read more

I'm from California and was checking out Durham and decided it was time for an impromptu trim so I googled the closest place and stopped by. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Ever. Katie was the stylist who worked on my hair and she was absolutely wonderful. I told her I just wanted to trim off my split ends and get some layers and boy did she deliver. Its been a week since my cut and I still can't get over how much I love it. In my 24 years of sprouting hair, I've never had such an amazing cut. Thank you Katie! You are such a fun person to talk to and a fantastic stylist. Either I need to fly you out to California for my next cut or I'll just have to go back to Durham. read more

Great place for a new do and a great place to try if you're new to the area. Staff are very welcoming. I had an appointment with Vanna, who is delightful. She commented that my unruly mass of hair was a "lovely canvas " and paid close attention to pictures and my description of what I was looking for. I came away with a great pixie cut and a desire to return in a couple months when I need another cut! read more

So, like any mammal, my hair continues to grow month after month. It's sort of annoying, but it's just my cross to bear. That whole "needing a haircut every six months (or more)" thing sucks way less when I can go to Katie, who is not only an amazing stylist but a top-notch, grade-A human being. I've gone to her for several years now, and not only do I always have a blast, she listens and delivers exactly the kind of cut I want, even if I use derpy words like "You know, that bangs thing that that girl on TV had one time." In all seriousness, I'm complimented on my 'do for the weeks after she cuts my hair by strangers & friends alike. Basically, I look forward to going to get my hair cut sort of like I looked forward to going to Chuck-E-Cheese back in the day. She is THAT awesome! I'm thankful she's my stylist (and my friend)! read more

I _don't_ have a lot of hair. In fact, some say I should cut it myself with a pair of beard trimmers ... but I really don't want to chance it, so I go to Altered Image every 4 weeks. Mark always cuts my hair and fusses over me like I have a head _full_! He'll clip the stray eyebrow hair and even up the transition from my beard to my scalp. He's very thorough! The location is great. It's right up the street from the Farmer's Market and within walking distance to some great restaurants. The shop itself is gorgeous. They have polished concrete floors and each wall is a different color. They also have a rotating selection of artists who display their artwork (and jewelry) around the front desk. It's an open layout that's fresh, modern and comfortable. The free wi-fi is also nice. The guys who run the shop, Mark and Eddie, are fabulous fun. Brad and Katie are always busy and always seem to be smiling too. I always leave with a smile on my face. Highly recommended! read more

They accommodated me in their busy schedule, and also altered my image in a good way as advertise. Super friendly establishment. Vanna is great. I will definitely be back. read more

Altered Image is a wonderful hair salon! I've been going there all the way from Southern Chapel Hill for years. It's worth the drive to downtown Durham because of the lovely people there. Hailey is the best hair cutter and I love chatting and laughing with her. Jeff is also excellent. Their staff is stable and their prices reasonable. read more

Meesha, Meesha, MEESHA! This lady has talent! I gave her a vague description of what I wanted and she NAILED IT. My hair has never looked better! The prices are legit best in the area, the owner was so sweet and came over and chatted with me, and I genuinely liked the vibe in the salon. Very casual but professional and everyone was SUPER friendly. I'll definitely be back as this is now my go-to salon. read more

Vanna Vanna Vanna!! Where do I start....... It was all great juju when someone picks up the phone and says "How can I make your day?" How original is that?! From the front desk to Vanna to the great non-pretentious vibe they have. I have been to almost every highly rated salon in Durham to get my hair done (lots of money washed down the drain). I went to six color consults, trusted my instincts and went with Vanna and have never been more happier with the color she achieved. Vanna is sincere, friendly, and talented! If you are looking for a salon, I highly encourage you to call them =D read more

terrific talent at taming terrible tresses! I love these guys! Reasonably priced, hilarious, nice and completely unpretentious...unlike soooo many other hair shops. read more

Katie is awesome! I had my hiarcut here last Friday for the first time. I really enjoyed my haircut and the conversation between us was not forced or uncomfortable at all! I will definitely return (and recommend to all my girlfriends!). I'm so excited that I found somewhere that was reasonably priced and was able to refresh my hairstyle without taking me completely out of my comfort zone. Also the way Katie blew out my hair was amazing and I literally looked like I belonged on the red carpet haha. read more

Katie did a really fantastic job on my wife's hair. It looks absolutely fantastic and I love it. She's been raving about the place and how friendly Katie was and how much she "gets it". Thanks!! read more

Jeff is amazing! He has been cutting my hair for over 23 years and always 'gets it right'. The cut, the highlights, always on point. He is a master colorist and a true teacher and mentor. I currently live 2 hrs away and still travel every 6-months to to correct the attempts to duplicate closer to home. Keep in mind everyone treats you like family, the staff is very professional and accommodating. A true professional who continues to elevate his game. Wish you were closer! I alway feel like a million bucks when I leave-THANK YOU!! read more

I have been to several high-end salons in Durham and Altered Image is by far the best. They are so warm and welcoming from the moment they answer the phone asking, "How can I make your day?" Haley is my stylist of choice and she is INCREDIBLE! I trust her completly and she has given me the most flattering color I have ever had! I feel so lucky to have come across this wonderful place! No need to look further than Altered Image! read more

The stylists at Altered Image are exceptionally rude! I parked in their doubly marked parking for customers only lot as a fully literate, competent, consenting adult understanding that I could face the consequences of being towed for parking there. A smoking stylist watched me park and leave the lot without saying anything to me; however, he did make the effort to leave a hot pink passive aggressive sticky note on my car reading, "You parked in a no parking lot, obviously you can't read" on my driver's side window. I had plans of purchasing hair products after grabbing coffee at the coffee shop a block away, but was completely deterred after seeing the note. I returned the sticky note to the business expressing my offense for the note being left on my car. 4-5 stylists chimed in saying it was too bad that I didn't appreciate the note and that I could have been towed to which they felt I wouldn't have appreciated. However, their note was not only belittling, demeaning, and unappreciated but also reflects poor business practices. They were wrong to think that they were doing me a favor by leaving a note on my car rather than towing me. Here's why: 1. The gentleman who took note of my parking very well could have been equally moved to have said something before I left the lot. This approach of assertion would have promoted clear, respectful, acknowledgement from both parties. 2. As they pointed out, their lot does say one might be towed, it does not say one is susceptible to having a rude note left on their car. Say what you mean, mean what you say, and stick to it ladies and gentlemen. 3. I am sure that the stylists wanted to communicate their graciousness by allowing me to park in their lot without being towed while giving a form of warning/acknowledgement by leaving a note. Consider this, with the same effort and stroke of the pen, the stylist could have said "Hey I noticed you parked here and walked away. Our lot is for customers only so please come in and check out our awesome products and services. We'd love to meet you, not tow you!", or otherwise warmly invited me to check out the products in the store if he was concerned that I was only parking in the lot to take advantage of their parking location. You attract more flies with honey than vinegar. Their "gracious" act was ill received. 4. Saying, "Obviously you can't read" is ignorant sarcasm. It is discriminatory to those who can't read and/or do not read/speak English. As someone who works with individuals who have reading disabilities from various cultural backgrounds, this is completely inconsiderate of those who are not of the same abilities as the stylists. As previously stated, I am fully literate, competent, and consenting to the decisions made by parking in the lot. If I were unable to read, this act of placing the note on someone's car who perceptively "can't read" would have been extremely ineffective at thwarting someone who can't read from parking in the lot. 5. Passive aggressiveness is only maddening for both parties. The stylists' day was not made any better by this act, nor was mine. With the same energy he could have created a more positive image of this business, and I could have used the same energy to write a positive review of the business on here. It's a shame really. Especially considering I am shopping around for new hair services and products, just as those who read yelp reviews are. read more

Hailey is amazing! Loved the results and she delivered just what I wanted. She is so sweet and made me feel comfortable. Will be coming here from now on for all my hair need! read more

Excellent talent here at Altered Image. Mark cut my hair and put a beautiful and fitting color on for me. I felt very welcome and enjoyed the vibe and the atmosphere a great deal. I loved how they wanted to take interest in my life. The salon is open and sunny and spacious - great place. Thank you so much both Mark and Eddie. I am so glad to finally have stopped by! read more

Awesome hair cut! I was an Asian guy. It is usually very hard to get my hair cut appropriately, but Eddie did an awesome job, so I did not need to go back the awful Asian barber again. Thanks God! read more

I love getting my hair done at Mark and Eddie's shop. The shop and people are very welcoming. Eddie usually cuts my hair, but Katie and Brad have also cut, flat ironed, or blow-dryed my hair straight. They also do Kerasilk straightening for a very reasonable price. I have had frizzy hair for 40 years. I was shocked at how soft, smooth, and straight my hair was for 12 weeks with Kerasilk straightening treatment. The great thing about that product is that it doesn't require you to buy only that line of shampoos and it is free of all formaldehyde and its derivatives, so it is safe. You will love this place and their reasonable prices for great quality hair care. read more

So a year later, I came back for another cut and highlight with Haley. I was informed that last time they forgot to charge me for my cut (no wonder it was SO CHEAP... oops). I'm still very happy with the cut and especially the medium highlight Haley gave me, and even now with the correct price, it is still VERY competitive in comparison with other hair salons nearby. I just want to update so other Yelpers don't have the wrong impression that it is ridiculously cheap. Thanks, Haley! read more

I sceduled a hair cut and consultation for a sturday like a week ahead then i called to scedule a hair relaxation appointment for thursday , katie went ahead and cancelled my saturday appointment without disscussing it with me. When i show up for my appointment i get a .' Your fault not mine' excuse . I am disapoonted by the poor communication skills of their staff and rude attitude toward solving any issue they have created. Also the building smelled a little musty. I went ahead and cancelled my other appointments with them as they dont seem very reliable.. read more

KATIE, KATIE, KATIE! I've lived in the Triangle area for over 10 years, and only did I find Katie last year at Altered Image, after trying so many different salons and stylists through the years. Granted, I don't get my hair cut that often, but when I do, I want a really good, professional cut. Katie delivers that and much more. She's so nice, funny, personable, and very talented. The entire vibe at Altered Image is relaxed and homey, they have a wide variety of clientele from very young (my daughter age 13) to very old. So welcoming and unassuming. Love this place, give it a try! read more

The first few times I went here it was great. The last time I went, however, the stylist I saw was in a hurry and completely wrecked my hair: wrong color and shaved one side burn all the way up while leaving the other one normal length. I have longish hair so it looked terrible. Overall I was super disappointed that this place could be so inconsistent. I hate having to go home and stress about looking worse than when I went in :( read more

The best team of stylists in the triangle. I always visit this salon to keep my flow flowing, or trim it down to something a bit more professional. Great atmosphere and entertaining staff. Once you visit altered image, you'll be sure to return. read more

I decided to give this place a shot with the reviews here. I booked my appointment by email. The place has a great vibe and feels welcoming. Vanna was my stylist and she's very friendly. She will go beyond expectations, and she was informative about everything. I had my hair cut and colored. The price wasn't bad for what I had done. I highly recommend this place. read more

Fabulous! I saw Katie and she was great. I went in with a really broad idea of what I wanted, but she had some really good suggestions to make, so I ended up with a fun, great-looking cut. I will be going back for sure. read more

Absolutely love this salon!!!!! Everyone is super welcoming and fun! I just moved here and found Katie by reading her yelp reviews. She is everything and more than I expected! I have super thick/crazy hair and it's hard to find someone who can manage it. She did an amazing job. I love love love my hair cut!!! I don't think I've ever laughed so hard during a haircut as well, have to say I've never had such a fun haircut experience read more

I can't say enough about how awesome my experience was last night. It was the first time that I've had my hair done and styled and didn't go home to "fix" it later (straighten, curl, fluff, etc.) Hayley was excellent! The whole salon is full of funny characters - we were all laughing and joking around the entire time. Plus, I feel as though they are really affordable compared to some of the other places I've seen around Durham. I'll definitely be back! read more

I had a wonderful first experience getting my haircut by Katie. I showed her pictures of the style I wanted and she delivered perfectly! She was wonderful to talk to, offering me suggestions of places to check out in Durham since my husband and I just moved to Durham this month. I left feeling great and that truly is the best feeling after you get your hair cut and especially with anticipation of going to to brand new stylist. I will be going back to see Katie for my next haircut! read more

I have been coming to Altered Image for four years. Katie is the absolute best! I am so painfully picky about my layers and the color of highlights. I don't know what I will do, now that I moved out of NC! All you lucky folks living in Durham area need to go see her! read more
