I can't believe this place isn't rated higher! When I lived in Greensboro, I looked forward to my weekly post-church trips to the Moose Cafe! You can't beat their giant biscuits and apple butter. They also have the best chicken and dumplings and sweet tea, a must-have in the south. The food is fresh, delicious, and you feel like you're at home. It's been years since I've had Moose Cafe so I knew I had to make it happen on my recent trip out to the Farmer's Market. I stopped in about 10:30-11 on Saturday morning and it was busy as expected but I was sat right away (it was just me!). I love that they use ingredients from the market. It's a cute and cozy cafe but with several seating options. Walking inside almost feels like a trip to grandma's. I ordered the Southern Breakfast which was HUGE! I could barely eat half so basically two meals in one. Great price for the portion. I opted for the chicken. Very flavorful and juicy! I did seem to get a lot of breading only on my first few bites, but eventually was able to taste the chicken and it was tender. I liked the gravy, but thought it could use a little more black pepper and perhaps a little (heat) spice. They definitely don't skimp on the gravy though! I was most excited to try the famous biscuits that everyone talks about, but I have to admit that they felt a little flat, pun intended. They just didn't seem super fresh. The apple butter was delicious though! I also loved the fluffy eggs. They were perfectly cooked. The hashbrown casserole was yummy, I'm not used to bacon in mine and I loved that addition. My waitress was so sweet! I apologized for taking up an entire table just for me. She told me to stay as long as I wanted, which was really nice. I like that they offer payment via QR code. This was my first time having lunch here. It was really really good. Not low in calories but maybe that's because of what I ordered!! I had the country fried chicken and it was cooked perfectly and a really good price I might add. The complimentary biscuits are some of the best I've ever had (seriously). The apple butter is fantastic. I met friends here and everyone enjoyed their meal. Breakfast is served all day and was looking delicious and at 1pm. I think I like lunch better than breakfast here but I might have to try breakfast one more time! All in all it was a good visit. I think they might be remodeling the place as well. read more

We generally love this place. The food is good, the value is good. We loved the ability to pay our checks on our phones at the table by scanning a qr code, was very helpful. A few items I noted that might need some remediation - please clean the salt & pepper shaker tops, there was bbq sauce and goodness knows what else dried on top. Also, we had two cracked dishes in our party of 7, one was cracked on bottom but one was cracked on top which could be dangerous as it could get into the food or cracked into the food. The food...bountiful Service....Outstanding Ambiance...spacious, clean and nicely set up. 1st time visiting on a recommendation from my niece The food overflowed off the plate, the aroma inviting, the food was super quick to the tables, hot and delivered by a beautiful and professional young lady, that knew her business She had and offered great suggestions kept our drinks full, she was a pivotal part of the enjoyment. We had a table of about 10 and everybody was well taken care of. The country steak was the full length of the plate, the pancakes took up a plate all to themselves, there biscuits, if you can imagine a delicious cross between a fresh baked roll and a fresh baked biscuit. Their dishes have definitely gone down in quality since the pandemic. The biggest tell are the biscuits - I don't know if it's different cooks, but the recipe and quality isn't good anymore. It has an odd sheen on the outside, not fluffy nor flaky, rather it's more towards a roll in how you tear it apart (best way I can describe it). The menu hasn't really changed much but the gravy has gone bland, and the sausage I feel like had changed vendor/brand as well. Eggs and bacon and such are still good. Coffee is well. The hostess greeted us as soon as we walked in and she sat us down in a booth. I have always loved the booths at the Moose cafe, because they are roomy and the tables are big enough to accommodate the plates of food. The waitress immediately came over to take our orders. Throughout the service the waitress was awesome. She refilled our drinks and made sure we had everything we needed. Although the customer service was wonderful, the food was not that great to me. Our food arrived in less than four minutes of ordering it. Although I love quick service, this was quicker than most fast food. The big fluffy biscuits get their flavor from the apple butter that is served with it. Other than that, they are just big fluffy pieces of plain bread. I ordered the Piedmont breakfast. It has eggs, sausage or bacon, moose cake or French toast, and a breakfast side. Let's start with the eggs. They can't be real eggs. They are something like egg beaters or something. They were hard to pick up with a fork. I had to switch to a spoon. They just had a weird texture. The sausage was not hot. I'm not sure what went wrong there too. One half of the sausage was tough with little flavor and then the other half was thin and just not good to eat. The moose cake was ok, but I think they have gotten smaller over the years....I could be wrong. The hash-brown casserole was loaded with cheese and a piece of bacon slapped on the side. They sell the apple butter near the cash register. That is one of the highlights from this visit. I should have taken a jar home. There's a Moose Cafe in Asheville, and it's great. The only things it has in common with the Moose Cafe in Colfax are the name and the farmers market location. I just can't find anything particularly good to say about the food at the Colfax location. The best I can offer: the gravy isn't bad. Every other food item I've sampled doesn't even seem to make it to mediocre. Biscuits as heavy as rocks and country fried steak with a peculiar, almost-spoiled aftertaste are just a few examples. But there's an even bigger deficiency than the food. The quality of service I've experienced here is generally horrible. In my most recent visit, for example, the waitress brought the wrong order out...twice. No apologies were offered in the three attempts it took to get the right items. I then had to ask for my bill three times because she kept forgetting to bring it. So after a few attempts, I'm writing this place off. When I'm in the mountains I'll drop by the Asheville locations, but no more Triad Moose Cafe for this guy. read more

Almost every time I visit the farmers market I end up having breakfast at the Moose Cafe. I am always amazed at the amount of food every plate offers and how massive their biscuits are. It also amazes me how no matter how busy they are, they always have a table ready. It is hard for me to wait for breakfast so this is a big plus for me. The food isn't spectacular, but always decent and fast. When you sit down at the table you are greeted with a plate of biscuits to enjoy while you wait for your food. I've had their eggs as an omelette, scrambled, and sunny side up and each way was cooked just right. Like most southern restaurants if a dish had cheese in it, be prepared for a bit of an overdose. I could spend a whole day in this area. Not only is the restaurant cool, but it's surrounded by large barns and shades that are a massive farmers market. Seeds, supplies, plants, flowers, handmade foods and preserves. It's gorgeous. The Cafe is adorable and takes the Moose theme very seriously. It's great!! We sat outside with views of the market. Really great service. Coffee is great and as a starter they give you fresh biscuits and apple butter. Wish I had one now haha Breakfast was terrific. I had never been here before in 20+ years of living in GSO. It has the feel of the "bring bowls of food to your table" type place but has menu choices: both Breakfast and Lunch. We got lunch grilled chicken, collards, and beets AND chicken and dumplings, Mac n cheese, and green beans. Each came with a square of corn bread. We were seated promptly and sat for a while with our menus. Finally someone took our order and plopped down two biscuits with apple jam in front of us. We got water and unsweetened tea which came out in jars. Most people had take out boxes in plastic bags on their table as the portions are large. We took two boxes home. Our food came out fast while I noticed sandwich orderers waiting a bit longer. Not dressy at all as it is smack in the middle of the Farmer's Market in Colfax. What a great country place. It's open and bright, the staff are very friendly. It's great for a couple having brunch or to take the whole family. I completely forget about this place when I go to the farmers market but I finally stopped by! My party chose to sit outside because it was a nice day. Kudos to the gentleman that was singing on the outside patio, he had a great voice. The server came right out with some complimentary biscuits and apple butter..... these biscuits are the best doggone biscuits I have ever had in North Carolina, should've taken the rest of them home. I like my apple butter a little smoother but my sister enjoyed her "Fall butter in a cup." We ordered and the amount of food that came out for the prices they were charging, did I mention I'll be a regular here when I come to the farmer's market!? My French toast was perfectly buttered and fluffy, my sausage was seasoned just right and the size of silver dollar pancakes, the cheesy hash brown casserole are the hash browns of my dreams but the eggs.... going to have get mine scrambled hard next time, they were a little "wetter" than what I'm used to. My sister ordered the southern style breakfast and her only dislike was that the home fries were not thoroughly cooked. A few missteps for a pretty decent breakfast. The Cafe seemed to be busy, as it was noon on Saturday. I was surprised to be able to be seated so quickly....however, I had no idea it would almost be 10 minutes before anyone said a word. I was actually thinking about getting up to leave when a waitress walked by and said I'll be with you in just a minute. In my opinion, that was 10 minutes late. When she finally came by to get my order she was friendly enough. However it was about a 5 minute wait now to get my iced tea. I know I said it was busy, however by this time it was starting to clear out. I had to wait about another 10 minutes for my food. The food itself was ok, however nothing I'm going to rush back for. I will said the portion sizes are very generous. They had some souvenir-ish items for sale in the hostess/check out area. Not a ton of stuff, but enough if you forgot to buy someone a birthday or Christmas gift. The atmosphere reminded me a little of Cracker Barrel. Very country vibe. I had been shopping at the farmers market, so I decided to try the Cafe. Would I intentionally come back, maybe I was shopping the farmers market and I was with someone who wanted to go. This place really reminded me of my grandmas southern cooking! I got the western omelette and it comes with biscuit and gravy and a choice of side (I got hashbrown casserole). The omelette was just okay. They used a thick cut ham and lots of veggies in it, but I thought it was almost too much of the onions/peppers. The hashbrown casserole was really good and very cheesy. The Moose is a shell of its former glory. 20 years ago it was fresh and delicious country-cooking, but these days it's just going through the motions trying (sort of) to stay alive. Walking in, the outside of the property is a telling and ominous sign of what awaits. My son had never been here before and he asked "Daddy, is this place clean on the inside ?" The landscaping and outdoor space was drab and unkempt and the building itself has a general dirty look these days. As we walked in , the front counter and shelves were near bare and did not have the canned items and retail items it used to have ... Seems like a tumbleweed blowing through would be appropriate. The paint has dulled to a piss yellow over the years, the paint from the ceiling is flaking off of the ceiling above and there was an inordinate amount of trash under the tables. It seemed that sweeping was probably not a priority and they had only been open a few hours at that point. The table they were going to sit us at had a dirty wash cloth on it and tons of trash under it. The waitress was very nice and accommodating though she did tend to forget details. What I wasn't a fan of was the lonnnnng fingernails. Don't want to paint a picture but you can imagine when they impede your ability to handle pitchers and glasses, it may cause other issues with bathroom hygiene. The tea was good and the biscuits as great as ever. I ordered the Grilled Meatloaf. It had a good taste but it was kind of luke warm and had a gray slime looking substance on the bottom of it. The pintos were pretty flavorless as well as the cornbread. The chicken and dumplings did taste quite good. The wife had Ham and it was pretty good according to her. I can tell when owners no longer care and the Moose seems to have hit that stage. My advice is close it down before you go too far into the red, it's done. Sadly, that will be my last visit to a once remarkable restaurant. read more

Wow!.. Great southern breakfast for the whole family. Nothing fancy, just breakfast the way it was intended. Lots of options and even a all you can eat breakfast if you dare at a reasonable price. Tons of seating to accommodate large groups as well. Kids all had pancakes and they said they were amazing. Make sure you look under their complimentary biscuits for the homemade apple butter. I ordered grilled chicken, collards, and potato casserole. Maybe it's because I'm eating healthier...but I felt the food was very salty. The grilled tenders were bland and the collards were slightly bitter to me. The biscuit and the apple butter was amazing as always and the cornbread was just perfect. You it down and immediately you start with huge fluffy biscuits and apple butter. If you get the right waitress, you'll get extra butters. Better yet- you'll get a chance to buy some before leaving. Be careful with eating those baskets of biscuits because you'll be 1000% full unless you go with a completely empty stomach. The eggs and gravy Benedict was a great great choice. The sampler- careful because that's also unbelievably filling. The chocolate pancakes are massive filled with, covered, and sitting ONTOP of a bed of chocolate chips. You cannot go wrong. Beautiful day in Kernsville! Drove up to the farmers market to grab a snack and sat down for a southern lunch that I had zero guilt for enjoying.
