When my sister asked if I wanted to go with her to get some doughnuts at 7 p.m. at night, I was a bit confused. But now I get it! Moonrise Doughnuts opens at night -- hence the name -- and sells its delicious doughnuts until they sell out. On the night I visited, they only had the special of blueberry doughnuts and orange donut holes left. I can't wait to try more of their sweet treats, but these were more than enough to satisfy a craving for morning pastries at night. These were also delicious the next morning, so if you want doughnuts for the morning, cross that to-do list off your list and pick these up the night before. I will be back on a future trip to see my family in Northern Kentucky. A new tradition? I hope so! read more

Received 6 hot birthday cakes donuts about an hour ago this is the size. Bite size at most. For the price is absolutely insane. Doesn't have much flavor at all taste is definitely off. I stopped by for a donut or three after hearing about Moonrise from a friend. She knew about the other location, which is open later in the day, but when I googled the place, I saw that there were two locations. I opted for this one because I had a morning hankering for something sweet. There were two other customers there when I arrived, and both were getting a dozen or more donuts, so it took awhile to order. The woman who was working the counter was also making donuts, so that slowed things down too. I ordered the day's hot donut, which was Darth Chocolate. The employee gave me two because they were coming out small. I also got a glazed donut. The chocolate donut was delicious, and the glazed was good. Reading the other reviews, I realize how lucky I was not to wait in line. Timing is everything! Speaking of timing, do your homework on Yelp before going. This is an evening donut shop...that's a new one for me. So no worries about beating the morning rush with all those peeps on their way to work bribing all their coworkers with sugary yummiest. I originally headed out early in the day for a good selection, to realize they open at 4 PM! I have so many decisions to make this morning...cherry, blueberry, maple, chocolate or so many others. I had read about their hot lemon, but sadly no lemon on the evening I went. They said to follow them on Facebook, and about an hour before opening they post the daily specials. I will be watching for lemon...in any of the forms they told me they have them. Think lemon cheesecake...can you tell lemon is my favorite? There was a hot orange being offered, but I noticed that as I was checking out. Next time I'll check that first. What could be better than a warm donut??? I shoved a Cherry Cordial in my mouth the moment I got in the car. It was heaven in a bite. And the women in the shop were so friendly and helpful. It has a small town feel in a beautiful section of Covington I hadn't been to before. (I am new to this area, having moved here recently) I will be following them on Facebook and the next time they feature lemon, I will be heading over here. Moonrise Donuts is an ode to the nostalgia of Latonia. They are open the reverse of most bakeries, as they start service in the evening! Thats my kind of place! Id rather get somewhere at 4 or 5pm to snag the better haul than at the crack of dawn! I was lucky on the Wednesday I came that there was no line but often there is. There is plenty of parking in a public lot that is just past the bakery. There are several tables inside the space, as well as a picnic table outside. If you look on the website there is a huge list of all the donuts they have created at one time or another. Each day only a handful of fresh flavors are made and they rotate. They also feature a hot donut special of the day! On this day, it was blueberry! I snagged a dozen including plain glazed, blueberry, carrot cake, maple, and chocolate frosted. The staff was kind and efficient taking my order! My favorite donut surprisingly was the plain glazed. While all the flavors were delicious, their plain just blew away any other place I've been to, even next day! I also was pleasantly surprised by the maple. I love maple but usually the donut version is kind of overly sweet and fakey. Their version tasted like real maple syrup and I'm here for it! The cake donuts were fluffy and the yeast donuts were the perfect density. None of the donuts tasted fried or greasy! They're ok. Nothing all that exciting, besides the fact that they're not a Dunkin' Donuts and they're open in the evening instead of only until early afternoon. They do have maple donuts, which is one for the win column; this may be the first place, besides the occasional Dunkin, where I've been able to find maple frosted donuts since moving to the midwest. Frankly, I'm pretty astounded by the number of 4-5 star reviews here--are donuts more rare in the south with little to compare them to? I'm glad I didn't really go that far out of the way to get them; they were on the way from Asheville to Cincinnati in Covington, KY, so not much of a hardship. The flavors rotate and today the variety included Glazed Maple, Fruit Loop, Mocha and Oreo. There's also traditional glazed and icing doughnuts. It was hard to chose so we bought several. Update. It's been a minute, but we went back. They're being super safe during Covid and I appreciate that. This time we bought 2 berries and cream, a maple bacon, cookies and cream, wow butter (?) and apple crisp. All super delicious and what I didn't realize before is how inexpensive they are! You're paying less than Dunkin prices for premium donuts! I think we paid $8 for these 6 amazing donuts. My only regret is that we didn't try the hot donuts and they appear to be the star. Tasty classic donuts and the hot ones are always great if you're eating in. Cool and fun concept to have fresh donuts in the evening. First off this isn't your traditional AM doughnut place. Just as the name implies - it's open in the evening hours. The day we went the hours were 5 - 10 PM. Secondly if you want a hot-off-the-line doughnut you can order the flavor of the day. We ordered the flavor of the day - Funfetti- and after a short wait were presented with hot fresh doughnuts that had that melt in your mouth goodness. Truly a sweet indulgence! There was not a huge selection of donuts, but that's okay, because sometimes you don't want 15 types of donuts. Let's be honest, most people stick to 1 or 2 standard faves. Plus, at Moonrise Donuts, what you are served across the board is PERFECTION. I consider myself to be a bit of a donut snob. I've been known to toss out a donut I didn't enjoy (yes, I have even given a donut place a 1 star review because they tasted awful). But these confections offered up fresh in the late afternoon from Moonrise are simply delish. The yeast donuts are light, fluffy, soft, and have just the right amount of topping (chocolate frosted in my case). I was just going to go with a half dozen but once I saw how fresh and fluffy they were, I went for the dozen. So glad I did. So far, my favorite is the classic chocolate frosted yeast doughnut. But I gambled with a cinnamon sugar maple doughnut (more of a cake doughnut texture) and I'm so glad I did. It was outstanding. I also had a mocha yeast doughnut and while it was very tasty, I liked enjoyed the chocolate frosted more. This is kind of a fun area where it's at too.
