All I can say is believe the hype. These might just be my new favorite donuts anywhere. We sampled a variety of the daily specials and I still can't get over how much the strawberry starburst truly tasted like a starburst. I ate a leftover glazed donut two days later and it was still soooo good, which to me says it all. You can't really go wrong with any flavor and they have both cake and yeast donuts. Easily the best donuts in Northern Kentucky. If you get up in Latonia, you remember going into the Latonia Bakery at night and getting your fresh hot donuts. Moonrise capitalizes on that memory by offering a different hot donut every evening. Don't go looking for pie's or cakes in this place. The only have donuts, and sometimes big as your head Cinnamon rolls that are amazing. Visited for the first time tonight and though I'd rate the donuts and service 5* (Got a hot made to order blueberry glazed cake donut) the place was packed & the service was super-friendly & efficient -I'd have to rate the ambiance a 2*... I love the yellow accent colors and the vintage photos of Latonia they have on the walls, and their logo is on point, but the lighting is not appealing-its basic fluorescent lighting which makes the space feel a tad cold & awkward-a softer change in lighting would definitely help create more of a warm & welcoming energy...also THEY NEED MUSIC!...maybe it was just off for some reason on this visit, but the stark lighting paired with an awkward ambient silence (everyone was waiting for their hot donuts to come up & we were all just standing in silence-as my niece would say "well that's awkward"-and it was), it's December, some light background holiday tunes would have boosted our experience 1000%....or maybe some classic 60's/70's music (in keeping with their vibe)-it would add a whole new level to the ambiance & experience of visitors. Okay this place has a line out there door. They have one in door and one exit door. We ordered about one of each thing available. Just as we made our purchase they loaded more flavors. My favorites were the samoa and the lemon crunch. The samoa is so fluffy and palazzo topped. The coconut is so good and plentiful. The lemon crunch is very sweet and crisp. The hot blueberry were selling by the dozens. I didn't care for them. They actually cook them while you wait. They have one featured hot doughnut each day. As someone who has celiac, I assumed good donuts were part of my past. Until Moonrise. On Tuesdays they have Gluten Free donuts. They were absolutely delicious, so I got a dozen! And everyone who tried them, can't believe they are gluten free! I especially love the cake ones with chocolate icing or Reese's icing. The people behind us in line drove 2 HOURS to try Moonrise. Wow! We ordered 6 doughnuts and ate three that night (paired with some sparking wine cuz we are fancy) and three the next morning for breakfast. I really liked the Elvis, Chocolate Latte, and Cookies and Cream. Service was fast and friendly. The line moves quickly provided you don't have indecisive folks ahead. My wife and I love Moonrise. Interesting hours as they are open at night, but hence the name. Even more interesting are their donuts! In a good way of course! My wife's favorite donut is the Homer. While it looks like a classic cake donut with pink frosting and sprinkles, the Homer really has a nice fruit flavor instead of tasting simply like sugary frosting. I really enjoyed the cotton candy and vanilla donuts. The cotton candy sounded exotic and I was a little "iffy" on ordering that one. Let's say I'm glad I did. The vanilla donut catches you off guard because of its Tiffany blue frosting. It was so light, flavorful, and fluffy. Oh, the maple bacon donut is divine. It speaks for itself. Maple. Bacon. I was finally successful in getting into the store on my fourth attempt traveling there. The store is very nice, the employees are very nice and they are following the Covid protocols. Pricing is excellent. After reviewing the menu online many times I admit to being disappointed by the selection. I did arrive at opening so there were still plenty available but the majority seem to be of the frosted flavors. I would guess 10 to 12 different flavors. There were 3 to 4 cake varieties. On the particular day that I went there were few that I was interested in. I chose one frosted, which was caramel, it was very good with a much better caramel flavor than I had anticipated. I also chose a glazed yeast doughnut but that was too sweet for my liking. I brought home three cake donuts and I did try a bite of each one but nothing was over the top a favorite. I was sadly disappointed that by 5 AM the next morning the donuts were just not edible. The cake donuts were dry and were falling apart so for me I would never recommend buying the night before for the next day consumption. I believe these are meant to be eaten on the spot. They have four pages of flavors on the menu so while I understand they can only make so many each day it is a bit of a letdown not to find any of them when you get there. I think the focus here is on the flavor combinations but you have no idea what they will be until you get in the store. They do not have online order ahead so you are subject to waiting in a very long line. I was early and only had about 10 people in front of me this time so I stuck it out. Previous attempts Have been all the way down the sidewalk and I am glad I haven't waited past the 15 minute mark. I have a disability so that's not possible anyway but I would've been disappointed not to find a lemon or a carrot cake after waiting 30 minutes or more. They only allow six people in the store at a time and while the employees are very speedy the customers are very slow at making their choices. The guy in front of me was taking pictures to send to people to see what they wanted so he let me go ahead but you get my point. They are not walking in saying give me a glaze and walking back out so the next person has access. All in all it was good, not great and I probably wouldn't make the 20 minute trip again. read more

My new obsession. Walked here while waiting for carry out from Bard's. I didn't know what to expect. The case seemed sparse but the donuts were colorful. We ordered a dozen plus 2 hot lemon doughnuts. We waited outside for the hot ones and it took less than 5 minutes before we were handed a bag with a piping hot lemon cake doughnut. It was quite possibly the greatest thing I've eaten. We were so smitten we bought 2 more (yes 16 doughnuts total). Everything was fantastic. The owner was very nice and came out to chat about his amazing donuts. It's such a great concept for when the evening sweet tooth wants something good. The hot doughnut idea blew me away. If someone ever told me that there would be a place in Latonia that has people lined up outside every day I would probably laugh at you, but with Moonrise Donuts it's all true. At first I was resistant to try, the expectations were set high from others that Moonrise had some of the best donuts. Ever. It had to have been true, I could see the line when I left work every day, but I thought my expectations would be let down and I would be left disappointed. I was not. I finally made the plunge yesterday, and I'm a believer now. The hype is definitely true, Moonrise is solid and a total competitor to juggernaut Holtman's donuts. I'm almost ready to say better than, but I think a little more R&D is needed...you know, for science and stuff. Moonrise is an unsuspecting place. Housed in an old Subway they completely revamped the place, and it's subtlety is appreciated. No frills, but killer donuts. Walking in you are immediately hit with the aroma of sweet, sweet regret because you are about to shove at least three donuts down your mouth in less than 30 minutes. The staff is incredibly nice and engaging, and you have hometown charm from start to finish. I honestly had such a hard time deciding what I wanted, but settled on a chocolate/caramel, Samoa and "devils food" donut. The devils food was their featured "hot" donut which costs a little bit more, but is literally served to you directly from the oven and piping hot. It's worth the wait, and tasted like a melting brownie directly from God's kitchen. I somehow was able to restrain myself from eating the other donuts until after dinner and breakfast this morning and they were equally as scrumptious. I'll be supporting Moonrise from now on, and definitely don't wait as long as I did to get in here. My only penitence is now having to go to the gym more to counterbalance the deliciousness, but like their boxes say, "You deserve a donut." read more

I stumbled in this heavenly place of freshly made donuts, as soon as we come in the door the smell of frying dough/ bread waft towards you and tickles your senses. I was just like a little child wanting to try each donuts. Keith, who seemed to be the owner was very nice, informative and appreciative of our business. The place is open on a limited hours (check their website) but it seemed very popular since I saw a lot of people coming in as I was contemplating what I want. Although they are fun donut flavors and super fresh in the end they are just donuts so if you come here it's more for the experience of visiting the shop at night and being a part of the crowd waiting for your donut picks and the friendly bakers. Each donut is $1 except for the hots of the night which are a few cents more. I loved all of my picks except for the chai bc it tasted more like bubble gum.
