Update 3/28/2014: I am very disappointed with my experience tonight at Moogy's. I am not one who is super concerned with germs and what not, but I was really grossed out with what we saw. We were sitting at a table near the kitchen, and I noticed the cooks using bare hands to cook and handle the food (both raw and cooked). I saw them handling my food and it bothered me, I was going to say something, but then I decided to relax. But then about 10 minutes later, they were dealing with the garbage, hands in the trash, taking out the trash bag, cleaning, etc. Then went back to cooking bare handed without washing hands. I also noticed them using and reusing knives on a variety of foods. I have food allergies and I am sure other people do too, and this is a recipe for disaster for others with allergies. I worked in a restaurant in the state of MA and we were required to wear gloves to handle the food and cook. I am really surprised and disgusted to see this! Please invest in gloves and take some time to be aware of other people's allergies. read more

Even though it's a bit dark in there at night, I have alway enjoyed Moogy's because the food is good & filling. The menu items are named uniquely to the area (like the Brookline salad) & some are unique to Moogy's (like the Sugar Daddy which is a Monte Cristo) I have yet to try the Whacha-ma-callit banana omelet, but it is on my list! read more

Moogy's The Wind Up There are few things in this world that I enjoy more than sandwiches and Brighton, so when an opportunity arises to eat a sandwich in Brighton my day is made. One of the finest sandwich establishments in Brighton is Moogy's on Chestnut Hill Ave. The psychedelic sign is the first clue Moogy's is not your normal dining experience. Once inside the 70's funk aesthetic is continued with a sparkly fish tank and individual creatively named menu items written large on chalkboards adorning the walls. The Pitch Moogy's serves a wide range of sandwiches and breakfast items. All menu items have unique names ranging from the C3P0 Chicken Steak to the Mother and Child Sandwich (French toast stuffed with ham and cheese). House Specialties include Steak and Cheese subs (including the Phantom Royale named after the Phantom Gourmet himself), 12 Chicken Steaks (including one named for my alma mater; the BU features chicken cheese steak with extra chicken, provolone and American cheese) salads, hot and cold sandwiches, and breakfast served all day. Moogy's even has 3 or 4 beers on taps, including 1 dollar Busch drafts. And while you're waiting for your food play one of the board games they keep behind the main counter; I recommend Connect 4 but they also have Sorry, Chutes and Ladders, etc. Results- Double Moogy's makes a darn fine sandwich. It's not super cheap (prices range $5-9 for most sandwiches) but it's very tasty. I especially enjoy the Phantom Royale, a steak and cheese sub with onion rings and bbq sauce. The ambience is fun and friendly, the food creative, and board games are a nice touch. Beer, breakfast, and board games are an excellent combination and Moogy's has all three in spades. I've enjoyed all of my past Moogy's experience and look forward to returning there in the future. Meh, nothing special. I've been searching for a good breakfast place with hash browns on the menu in my area for a while now. I saw them here at Moogy's up on their board. Psyched! Too bad they lied. Clearly home fries, and not hash browns. I approached the workers about such, and they noted "thats just what we call them". Yeah well, totally different, and your menu is misleading. Why don't you just call your chicken wings boneless while you're at it? Also, food was cold, eggs were cooked incorrectly, and the toast was burnt. Prices = $18 - breakfast for 2. Yikes, never coming back here again. Came on a weekday, and wasn't even sure if the joint was open! Walk in, and there's a couple of dudes sitting with board games. Walked in to order our food, and there were 5 people in the kitchen! Considering there were only 3 people in the restaurant, that really threw me off. Got our food and was TOTALLY underwhelmed. For what we paid, we could've gone to other nearby establishments and got way better quality. I pretty much paid for a lower grade Subway sandwich. The only redeeming quality of the place was the beer (which, by the way, was totally overpriced). I've passed by this place many times and have always wondered about it. Last night I finally ordered for delivery, and was quite pleasantly surprised. Grilled cheese, bacon and home fries - yum! Not too expensive, either. Plus the food arrived hot and in less than 30 minutes. My companion, who is quite the discerning turkey sub expert, liked his hoagie. Bonus points. Walking in you might think this place might not have good food. You couldn't be more wrong! The food was outstanding. They even had gluten free options! (Not an allergy but a choice) I had a burger and sweet potato fries. Dogfish IPA 60 min was the IPA of the day. Family had awesome pancakes. Great experience. Returned to Moogy's after a 4 (!!) year hiatus. As a BC Alum, I've utilized this restaurant for a fair number of late starts and hangover reducers. Now that I'm an "adult", I arrived around 11 AM, starving and only sporting a mild whiskey headache. Luckily the students weren't up quite yet. After I recovered from how different the interior looks (Was there always a bar inside??), I settled into a booth and smiled upon noting that the menu looks exactly the same. I ordered the Popeye Omelette (spinach, feta, and mushrooms) with add-in of bacon. I also ordered one cinnamon chocolate chip pancake for good measure. My boyfriend got the Popeye and a whole order of peanut butter chip pancakes. Safe to say that we like to eat. Everything was delicious. Take a bite of a chocolate chip pancake and a peanut butterchip pancake at the same time - bad for your blood sugar, good for your heart! Well, technically bad for your heart. Only negative is the hash browns -- they are basically short steak fries. You can tell that they're bought frozen & deep fried. Not bad college kid fare, though. read more

Best Veggie Burger Subs since Pinocchio's in Amherst, MA. They are unbelievably good. Decent fries too. They reonvated in the past year or so and now it is even more inviting. Huge menu. (Including breakfast all day:):):) tons of different flavored fries, also rings and chicken fingers. Delicious, funky, a bit dark and likes board games. I think I have a crush on Moogy's. Granted, as with the girls I usually like, Moogy's is a little overpriced. Still, each time I've been here I've enjoyed my food, whether it was bacon and eggs, the Wednesday night 25 cent wings special or the delicious Dirty Birdy sub (chicken, broc, teriyaki and mozzarella). The regular fries are kind of boring, so try the seasoned curly fries. Yup, I'm health-conscious. No wonder all the overpriced chicks love me. If you're interested in the wings special, I think it's on Wednesdays from 8-10pm. You have to order in batches of 10, so plan your appetite accordingly. Don't go waltzing in trying to order 7 or 12 or something like that...that's just silly. If you're going for breakfast/brunch, try to get there before noon to avoid the rush. That's when all the pajama'ed college kids come to grease away their hangers. Overall, Moogy's is one of the best casual places to eat around Brighton/Cleveland Circle. I'll leave alone the aesthetics, as those have been well reviewed, and only supplement past reviewers comments about interior decor to say this: Moogy's has done an incredible job with the real estate they have. Sports fan or news junkie? Huddle up to the bar and enjoy the array of flat-screens. For you readers and indoor-kids out there, you can find quiet rows of booths adjacent to the kitchen with overhanging lights as warm as the fresh-baked cookies padding the restaurant with their sweet scent. Traveling in a pack? There's an open space with large tables secreted away in the back. All that sounds nice but you're an agoraphobe, wiling away your hours stitching poems into pillows? Moogy's does take out. What I want to talk about is the food, the amazing food. Most of these reviews, even those that laud the place, tack on their gastronomical opinions as an afterthought, an "oh and the food is good," stumble on the last step of their esprit de l'escalier. This amounts to neglecting genius. The menu is enormous-- after five years of living in the area I've yet to get through it and I've yet to be disappointed. Many things, down to even condiments, are homemade and always fresh (The honey-mustard is nothing short of ambrosia), and the generous portions are more than modestly priced, a happy discrepancy made more joyous by all sorts of daily deals and specials on any number of food items. Coffee is always hot and fresh, and the beer and wine selection is admirable. For more details on the food at Moogy's, pull out your Webster and check under "D" for 'delicious.' Finally, Moogy's does well those things taken for granted by any good eatery, but unnoticed until they're done poorly. That is to say, the staff is friendly, the place is immaculate, the music (which ranges from inoffensive to toe-tapping) is at a good volume, management is responsive, and, come on, they put out a water bowl for Rex, even dropping in some ice-cubes on the hotter days. Moogy's used to be so good, and I recommended them so much. Something changed a year or two ago though. Where the staff was always friendly, and the food always good, they now seem incapable of getting a simple order right. After taking a break for several months, I gave them one more try. Somehow, a simple buffalo chicken sub with only blue cheese ended up with no buffalo and provolone. When I noted the lack of buffalo to the server, she noted that the guy who made it in back was right next to her and told her how to enter the order, so it should have been right. When I also noted that I wanted only blue cheese, she decided I ordered it that way. When I repeated exactly how I placed my order, she again said I order it wrong. First, I know what I ordered. It's the same order Moogy's got correct for about 8 years, until the last year or so. Second, you already admitted the order was wrong. Just make it right. I'm done. read more

According to an ex-boyfriend of mine, I cannot claim that "sandwiches" are my favorite food. Clearly, he's an ex for a reason. I love good sandwiches. I mean, they're hard to eff up, but also hard to end up with something special. I've only been to Moogy's once, so this review might be premature, but just their menu gives me the feeling that they understand the art of a good sandwich. I also adore breakfast food, and apparently they have it all day. I've yet to find out if they deliver it though. Also, the place is cute, the girl working there when I went was really friendly, the french fries were too delicious for my own good, and they have board games and dollar beer. Done and done. Don't be confused - yes, the sign outside looks like this should be a head shop, not an "after 2 bowl munchie shop" but it's definitely the latter and you know what's pretty consistent about food that hits the spot when you're high? it's usually pretty blah when you are sober at lunch on a Monday $18 for two sandwiches, and I would love to tell you what I got - but to be frank, it was so eventless an experience that I can't hardly remember. Pretty standard food, though all my friends rave about the sandwiches here. The atmosphere is pretty chill, service a little slow but not unreasonably so. One of the gimmicks is that if you ask, you can get a board game like checkers or Connect 4 to play while you eat/wait for your order. They serve beer here as well. I've been holding off on this review for a little while, mostly because I just didn't really have anything that great to say about this place, and that alone was disappointing. I really wanted to like this place, so maybe I'll give it a try again in the future... Anyway, the nice thing about this place was that they let me place an order for pickup just before the Super Bowl. I think in retrospect that should have been a sign, but since they're right up the street and I like to walk, I figured it was just good fortune. The first thing that struck me when I walked in was how disjointed the space feels. The bar looks like something out of one of those Old West theme park areas you find at Six Flags, and the place is high and cavernous, making you really want to whisper. We weren't staying but we weren't sure where all the employees were, so we walked back to the kitchen. Our wings and fries were waiting, but they wouldn't take our card, which was weird. I paid in cash and we were on our way. The wings were unanimously the smallest, least-meaty wings we've had. We wound up making a frozen pizza to make up for the lack of food. The pizza fries weren't that great either, mostly because they had already congealed by the time we got home. I gave it a spin in the microwave, but it didn't help that much. Oh, well. Moogy's must've been conceived of, designed, decorated and had the menu planned by people who were high. The result is awesome food, unusual concoctions, and slightly high prices... "because, the food'll like... cost a lot, man," I imagine someone at Moogy's hypothesized. No one else questioned this person, they were too engrossed with their game of Candyland. So yeah, it's not cheap. But, it's not expensive either. My favorite Moogy's sandwich is simple: Grilled peanut butter, banana and fluff. Delicious. Yeah, I could make it myself, but everyone knows a sammich tastes better when someone else makes it. read more

DO NOT EAT HERE! They have a sign in the building advocating not to wear face masks (although currently required in MA). Inside, no employees are wearing masks or gloves. You can see into the kitchen where they are also not using masks or gloves (Preparing food requires gloves!). No practice of social distancing. I liked the atmosphere here quite a bit and it was great to be at a place that encourages people to hang out and play games. The problem was, that was the best part about this joint. The food was fun and decent but nothing to write home about. Here are where the problems come in. 1) I have no idea why there isn't table service. There were 3 or 4 tables going and one waitress working. She took orders at the counter and we had to go back up to get more drinks. Moreover, there was a tip line of the credit card bill. That's borderline insulting. 2) The waitress started closing up 30-45 minutes before close and had her jacket on 15 minutes before we left. I gave you a god damn tip for doing nothing. You could at least have the courtesy to make my friends and I feel comfortable staying until your posted close time. We might have even had another round of beers. 3) The place didn't strike me as the cleanest restaurant ever. All in all, I had a good time there but that was only because of the company and the fact we could play games. read more

I love the concept of Moogy's. I admire people who can be so creative with sandwiches, some of which really take things to the next level. The Phantom Royale with Cheese is one of the cooler sandwiches I've had. But there's concept and then there's execution, and there are problems with the latter: first of all the place is filled with booths and tables and gets a huge weekend rush during the school year, so why not have some table service instead of making people wait in line for upwards of 20 minutes just to order (and never mind the extra time it can then take to get your order brought out)? Plus the quality of the food can be hit-or-miss--maybe it depends on who's back in the kitchen. We tend to go in the summer or else mid-afternoon to avoid the big BC rush. Despite its problems, it's a great place to go get a big sandwich and chill out for a while. read more

Intersting atmosphere. I kinda feel like in order to really enjoy this spot, I have to take big rips off a bong. And then request them to blast Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb". And then order everything off the menu like Shaggy and Scooby Doo. Ehehehehehehee rooby roo! But for those of us that walk in here sober, it's good food. It's fair priced and what you'd typically expect from a standard bar. Definitely not the place you'd go to hang out all night, but a nice pregame destination if you're in the area. The location is kind of tucked away from all the other bars in Brighton, so it's not really the kind of place that happens to be on the way. I hardly ever find myself in that area. A few friends and I came in for dinner on a night before going out and even a small regular sub was sufficient to fuel debauchery for about 7 hours in Boston. Huge Plus. We decided that we clearly needed to come back the next day for breakfast because we were so pleased the night before. My friends and I ordered breakfast sandwiches (which we are finishing in the cab as I'm writing this) and it's amazing. Probably the best breakfast sandwich in Massachusetts. SIDENOTE: The baked goods are also all homemade and totally worth a purchase. Red Velvet Cookies, anyone? Great atmosphere and lighting, Board games galore, EXCELLENT BEER AND MUSIC. 5/5. While I'm not crazy about the atmosphere here (college sports bar) this has turned into one of my regular haunts. I like the hot veggie sub. It is made with a sweet mustard, broccoli, cheese, and other veggies. It comes in small, medium or large. The veggie burger sub is my new favorite. A small is large enough unless you have a huge appetite or want leftovers. I suspect that the meat subs are good, if you are a meat eater. They have nice large booths and serve beer. They have great side items--curly fries, cheese sticks, etc. You can get take-out or you can have it delivered. I especially like that they have some cheap menu options like grilled cheese sandwiches. I like to get food to go and take it up to the Reservoir to eat under the trees. read more

I came here this past Sunday for brunch with a few people that I didn't know too well. Let me first say that board games are an excellent ice breaker. Who doesn't bond over a sweet game of Sorry? I had a breakfast burrito, which was solid, but nothing to write home about. They do have some interesting menu options, so I have stuff to look forward to next time. The booths are great for privacy with your party, but don't come here with more than 6 people, because you'll have to split your party. I like the place because it is a quite place to sit for a long time. It is comfortable, with big booths, and I can see this being a great place for studying. For the environment, I will go back. For the food and the service, not so much. I had an omelette which was under cooked, and generally nothing to get too excited about. The woman who was working looked like she had a rough night the night before, and was not thrilled to be at work...hey lady: I'm hungover too... deal with it. If you're gonna go to Moogy's get the Grateful Hash: homefries covered in cheese, ham, mushrooms, tomatoes and onions. I've had a few of the sandwiches (C3PO is my hero. The tuna sub, not so much. Not enough tuna). The bread could be better (toasted would definitely help). It gets soggy pretty quickly. My friends have been more adventurous with the sandwich choice but are often disappointed. This is my new go to place when I want food delivered fast. They deliver in record speed, sometimes as little as 15 minutes. All the sandwiches we've tried have been pretty good, and their buffalo chicken is especially tasty. They also get points for the selection of fries, and for delivering breakfast in the evening. Yum. Easy to get to. Hard to leave. Moogy's is a once in a lifetime sandwich shop. (Scratch that - breakfast joint) oh wait it's a bar too! We are talking everything from dollar PBRs to delightfully bomb mimosas. Sandwich creation is Moogies signature. Cold cuts and traditional hoogies are contrasted with whimsical imaginative sandwiches. Mother child reunion - chicken and egg Sangy. Fry choices are optimal. All the heavy hitters are present. I'll probably get shanked for saying this, but I just don't see the allure of Moogy's The food's nothing fantastic, they're more expensive than necessary and the portions don't match what they charge. Yeah, they've got board games, beer and a tie-dyed sign, but that shouldn't justify the love this place gets. Before I'm roasted further for not giving them a chance I've hit them up at least a half dozen times and every experience I walked away wondering why people rave about this place so much. So the menu has creative titles, but it doesn't make the sub taste any better. If you're looking for Chicken Parm/Cutlet just go to BIg A. Steak & Cheese? Little Pizza King. One thing I'll give props to and this should earn another star, is the dollar drafts. Never EVER scoff dollar drafts! read more

This is the perfect "I don't know what to eat" place to eat. A lot of great variety in the sandwiches, most of them really unique. Consistently good and relatively quick. The Mother/Child Reunion has to be one of the best hangover sandwiches - chicken fingers, fried egg, bacon, and cheese. The Chicken Parm is really good, too, but order extra cheese and sauce. Come during the evening for a sandwich, a beer or two, and board games. I'm sad that I don't live around the corner from this place anymore. read more

I have been going to Moogy's since the good old college days. I've never ordered something that wasn't cooked how I wanted it or that didn't taste anything less than amazing! Great prices, great food, enjoyable atmosphere and they always have great music playing. Not to mention if you need something to do you can play board games as you enjoy your food and drink. Are you a college student? Do you consider sweatpants with Uggs acceptable to wear in public? Are you hungover at least 3 days a week? Do you drink Busch? This is your kind of place! The food is pretty good, though it usually doesn't taste as good as it sounds. The staff can be a bit rude and look as hungover as its clientele. Ex: I order an Italian sub. She asks what I want on it. I say: Everything. She looks confused, gives me stink-eye and scoffs. Really? Yeah, really. She then proceeds to ask me about each addition and I respond 'yes' to each one. That's what I meant by everything. She acted like I was being difficult. Cut the drama, I understand working here isn't your dream job, but don't take it out on me, bitch. And some level of table service would be nice. Good for students and their limited budgets. You can get eggs, a bagel (toasted to perfection without exception), bacon, sausage--the works--for a fair price. And there's no need to wake up early for it all; they serve it pretty late. The look of it isn't fabulous, but doesn't have to be. And I like that they carry Diet Raspberry/Cranberry Snapple.
