This is cheap food, not great food. We thought at least that the blueberry pie would be outstanding, but it wasn't. It was good but not exceptional -- good flavor, but a bit watery, and not quite on the level as some other blueberry pies we've gotten from Maine bakeries. read more

I have a severe shellfish allergy and was so grateful to the chef at Moody's Diner willing to separately grill fish for fish sandwiches for my husband and I. It was excellent, as was the strawberry shortcake I got for dessert, all of it to go. This was the real deal, as they say. it is the first time in years I was able to get the ingredients for a real Maine strawberry shortcake, just like the kind I had as a kid growing up in coastal Maine. This is a very popular restaurant and was completely full when I arrived. The experience brought me back to my childhood and the great food I had back then. I am so grateful, and I did dream of the strawberry shortcake many times later. read more

Can't say much more that hasn't already been said. Yes....it might be crowded and you have to wait for a table. Yes....it is worth it. Great food and value especially for a touristy area. A nice sized diner with tables, booths, a "bar," and a whole lot of history. We went for lunch during what looked the rush and only had to wait about 15 minutes. You walk in, get a number, then they point you to your booth. The patrons were mostly seniors but that seemed a theme in the area I was in. The menu was HUGE. Something for everyone with things I've never had like fried scallops. I went with the lobster roll (because Maine and we don't get great lobster in Kansas) and even though it was the cold with mayo kind, it was divine. The lobster had such a good flavor and the mayo wasn't heavy. The bread was delicious and not overly thick. My coworker had a burger that he thought was done very well. For both of our meals and a soft drink it was something like ~$35 after the tip. Well worth it! This place seemed famous and I could definitely see why. I didn't get any sweets, but their donuts and the pie seemed like a HUGE hit with everyone else. The service was great even though they were busy. Highly recommend! read more

More famous than actually good. We were in the area so figured why not. There was about a 15 minute wait. We got a plastic card with a random number on it. Once seated, the server was very nice and attentive. The place had the classic diner atmosphere and feel. We sat at a typical diner booth. I ordered the Haddock chowder and fried seafood combo. The chowder was OK, but not great. The seafood platter was sort of bland and heavily battered. The batter was to heavy for my liking. The shrimps were tiny and did not taste fresh. The battered Haddock was probably the best part of the meal, but I had better while in Maine. The coffee was decent. It was worth the one time experience. read more

Hooray!! A old style diner that has stood the test of time. I cannot express how thrilled I am by this. Also, I have found what I would consider a "local" favorite. Two thumbs up and I haven't even put a fork to my mouth. My haddock roll really was not a roll, but rather a sandwich. The fillet was very generous and tasty (even though it was fried). It was served plain.. lettuce, tartar sauce, and pickles. The cole slaw was excellent. If they added just a touch of pineapple it would be exceptional. Finally, the onion rings were very thinly sliced making it more like and onion string, which was a better option. For dessert, the bread pudding was not over powering in sweetness and an excellent complement to a wonderful lunch. If your making a run from Freeport to Rockport, this really is worth stopping off for a visit. I don't frequent this part of Maine at all, but after finding Moody's I have a reason to come back. read more

Diner category 4 stars here. As Meagan H said, stick with the diner food. We stopped here for breakfast and the place was really jammed. Nonetheless, we were seated at a booth fairly quickly and in short order we were grubbin' on some awesome blueberry pancakes, eggs, omelets and such. Great food, especially the pancakes. While on my Maine trip last month I drove by this place on Route 1. I saw all the cars and it looked cute so I turned around and ordered some lunch. Service was good and it wasn't a long wait. Turkey and mashed potatoes were delicious and they didn't skimp on the gravy. Place was clean and had that authentic old school diner feel. I even stopped in on my way back home a few days later to grab a slice of the famous blueberry pie. Deliciousness in every bite. 2nd time I went it was so crowded that the line was practically out the door and you could hardly move after you got in the door with all the people waiting to be seated. But as soon as I took my first bite of that blueberry pie it was worth it. You can get whole pies from them too you just have to call 24 hours in advance. Great little diner here. No doubt I'll be back next time in Maine. Definitely worth checking out if your in the area. read more

This is a cool, old throwback to the diner age. From outside it kind of looks like a couple of trailers end to end. Up the ramp and in the door, it's a bustling diner. It was a Monday, about 11am. Only a couple of open tables. The servers were busy with their tables, but did say hello, we'll seat you shortly. We were sitting at a table in under a minute. It did start to get busy at this point, and there were folks waiting for a table soon. I think that's a sign of good eats! Our server was a smiling young lady who was very polite. We got drinks right away. It was outside my breakfast window, so I looked at lunch. My travel companion ordered breakfast. THE FOOD: I was brought a fresh made biscuit first. It was very tasty. With butter, outstanding! I settled for a seafood platter which included, shrimp, scallops, haddock sticks, clams and clam strips. I also ordered mashed potatoes and beer battered onion rings. I loved the scallops and haddock. The shrimp and clams were ok, but the batter on them was a bit thick for such small pieces. The clam strips had a lot of clam flavor.. very good. The mashed potatoes and gravy were just ok. The onion rings I liked, but I don't think the potatoes or beer battered onion rings were scratch made. My companion had an omelet and raisin toast which she enjoyed. Overall, friendly, local service, good selection and great homemade biscuits (among other homemade items) I really enjoyed. When we arrived at our bed and breakfast I asked the owner where to get the best blueberry pie he immediately said Moody's Diner. It was a 30 minute drive but so worth it! A huge slice of pie with at least 3 scoops of delicious ice cream. The blueberries are for sure real local Maine blueberries. Small but super sweet. My wife got the coconut cream pie and said it was the best she has ever had! I have heard their diner fare is so so but you should definitely go for the pie! read more

Had the honey dipped fried chicken, which came with a large chicken breast, thigh, and drumstick. The coating was crispy and not in the least bit greasy. Moodys has changed dramatically and in a bad way! Our family has been going there for about 50 years! We visited a few weeks ago and found TWO hairs on our plate the waitress was so embarrassed about it...then on a second visit as we cashed out at the counter, the cashier/hostess THREW HER HANDS UP IN EXASPERATION AND YELLED AT US when we asked for a particular kind of donut (plain sugared) to go. "We don't have any!! We never have!" she yelled. This would explain why there's no longer lines waiting out the door on weekend mornings! We will never return. read more

A must go to if you either live in or vacation in the mid coast region of Maine. Operating for about 90 years the food is great as well as the service you receive. This is a diner, not fine cuisine. If you accept that, then you will be ok with the service and food. If, on the other hand, you heard about this in some travel show and thought it would be some sort of Disney World attraction, you will likely be disappointed. The staff is friendly, but too busy to be really attentive. The food is on par with any roadside diner. The building is pretty beat with counters, tables and seats showing no signs of serious upkeep for 50+ years. But, that's also part of the charm of this place. It's authentic. The staff supports the RED project, veterans stop to shake the hand of a serviceman in uniform and folks at the counter talk local politics and fishing (often the same thing here.) You will likely have to wait 15+ minutes for a table - longer if they are busy. Moody's does serve breakfast plates all day, and other than some of the great desert options, you should probably stick to the breakfast choices. Besides, pancakes and bacon for dinner is always a solid choice. read more

Utterly charming diner serving food that meets the high-end of your expectations after reading their sign: "When I get hungry I get Moody!" Bizarrely, I had the best fried scallops I've ever eaten here. That's strange for two reasons: 1) scallops aren't local 2) you shouldn't fry scallops. I wouldn't even have thought it was possible to fry scallops without ruining them. Somehow, these were flawlessly - absolutely perfectly tender, yet had a crisp breading. Maine clams are "sweet," and lacking the mineral depth of other clams. Lots of them fit in your tummy. You will find many of them piled on your plate. The haddock is meaty as opposed to being flaky, and complemented a diner-y seafood trifecta by adding this variety in texture. This is, of course, the kind of seafood that pairs not with white wine but instead tartar sauce. Congruence adds a lot to an eating experience. Moody's neon sign, friendly booths, homey yet brisk service, and abundant well-prepared food made with zero pretense all sing together in harmony. It's the song you want to hear when you're on a road-trip to the Maine coast. read more

The food was great and the staff was very friendly! I got the Bertha Burger: A 1/2 pound patty with cheese, lettuce, red onions, fried pickles, and thousand island sauce (all included). Very juicy and full of flavor, the patty was cooked to perfection and all the toppings were fresh. Easily the best burger I've had in a long while. The onion rings I got on the side were great too.
