I have been going there from time and time since the day they opened and have never been disappointed. I ordered a ham sandwich today with high expectations. The ham and the contents of the sandwich were great. I feel that the bread had been sitting out for two or three days and was dry and stale. My mom and I just had the best pizza and coffee ever there. The pizza was so delicious had to have a second piece of the pepperoni and Bacon. The folks there are very nice. It's hard not to feel at home there with the wood floors and beams! A must stop in for all types of sandwiches and interesting diverse deletion of made to order foods. We are so thankful for yelp and finding the Washington General Store. We are staying in Appleton and this is the closest store to get most of what you need. When we traveled here we didn't realize the closest grocery store would be so far so having this local market came in handy and they had pretty much everything we needed. We went here 2 out of the 4 days we were in town and the employees were very helpful and kind. I can't write a review on the subs, pizza or anything the deli makes but everything they were making looked delicious. They are closed on Sundays but hey, everyone needs and deserves a day off! This was pretty much the only grocery store near our Airbnb and they pretty much had everything we could possibly need it! They offer warm, fresh food as well as refrigerated items. This place deserves 5-stars. It is the most ideal example of what a "modern" small town general store should be like after a heavy renovation. They have a nice combination of things they sell: groceries, food staples, toiletries, hot coffee choices and a functional food prep area for counter ordering. Their prices are fair for a majority of items they sell. I found some craft beer/wine bottles that are cheaper than prices at "bog box" stores in southern Maine. One of their best touches is a local artisan table selling gifts. If I was in need of buying something for family or a house warming present it would be easy to add something local to my check out bag. The only thing I wanted to get that I couldn't was real half-and-half for my coffee and an iced coffee station year round. I really don't have many reasons to be in Washington as it isn't on the way to anywhere but since I have family/friends I will definitely make a special trips when I am in Waldo County. read more

Someone at the Town Hall recommended Washington General Store to get a quick bite to eat. Since this is a small town and several establishments were closed because of COVID-19 we dropped by. It was an unexpected treat. You can purchase hardware, beer and incidentals in addition to sandwiches, soup, salads etc. The service was friendly and many items are locally sourced. Coffee and pastries were excellent. Make sure you try the croissants. Although some of the small town ambiance is missing because of the pandemic, you can feel safe since they are following social distancing protocols, providing hand sanitizer and masks. read more

Very friendly people and just about anything you'd ever need! I am truly in love with their WGS Italian sub on the sub roll. A huge sandwich on homemade sub roll with ham, capicola, veggies, and black olives. It's enough for two! Their pizza is good, too, and I'm addicted to their incredible pastries. Great beer selection, unique sodas, and lots of nice gift items. I have two stores within a few miles of me, but I'll drive 10 miles to go to Washington General! read more

Very well run general store with great food. Soups are fantastic as well as the grilled sandwiches, which can be made GF. Staff is friendly and they have a nice sunny area to eat at the front of the store. Pizza is tasty and they serve good coffee. They are expanding their seating in 2020. read more

Washington General has the best baked goods. Made from scratch every day. Best lemon squares, croissants, scones. My favorite item is the Big Greek salad, the addition of kalamata olives and artichoke as well as their own dressing makes it absolutely delicious. Soups and bread served daily as well . Not too crazy about the pizza dough as I like NY style pizza more but toppings are fresh and high quality. Vegan cheese option. I'd recommend this place. read more

A Totally Surprising and Refreshing Treat In "Downtown" Washington! I stopped only because I drove past a few times and this time I remembered to give it a try! What a great discovery from an impulsive decision. A spotless, well thought out store with not only snacks but, fresh baked pastry as well as pizza with an authentic taste. The wine selection was surprising in its variety, including a Montepulciano not often found in our woodsier towns. Ahhh! Was very excited when WGS opened. Have had good food and very spotty service. Here is a perfect example- Yesterday I stoped in for a quick bite and ordered an easy (tuna) sandwich and paid. Over 1/2 an hour later I received it. The reason for the long delay = gossiping staff, inattention to my order, doing maintenance duties, restocking supplies and just laziness. At the time of my order there were no other patrons and no one came in for 20 minutes. Basically the store has limited stock, high prices, good food and sketchy service. Why should a customer feel like an afterthought when trying to keep a small town local business alive. read more
