Visited OHGS after I couldn't find anywhere to eat breakfast/lunch in the Rockland/Rockport area. The 7 napkin burger was delicious and required more than 7 napkins. Worth a visit! Last week, my wife and I were in Rockland for a few days and during that time we drove around and explored the Owls Head area, including visiting the 1826 lighthouse. The Owls Head General Store is an interesting, typical New England general store. There are local authors' books for sale along with prints and photographs. We stopped for lunch before visiting the Owl's Head Lighthouse State Park. My bff and i split a BLT. Nice toasty homemade bread that didn't get soggy or rip. Good quality bacon, meaty, just a tad crunchy and nice and salty. My hubby had the 7 napkin burger and said it was tasty. The store is adorable , with some souvenirs and local items. They also have a great selection of handcrafted sodas made in Maine. The root beer was delicious. The outdoor seating has several picnic tables, some in the sun and some in the shade. What a hidden gem! I would not miss the opportunity to have lunch with them again and lounge about on a quiet beach with a breathtaking view. Perfect day. read more

The old fashioned New England store of your childhood is alive and well in Owl's Head! Planned a perfect chilly, foggy spring adventure day trip to Owl's Head Lighthouse and had the whole place to ourselves. Heard about the infamous 7 Napkin Burger and it was delicious. Stopped by after doing errands in the area and someone suggested it for a quick and delicious burger. The Seven Napkin burger lived up to its name and then some! Service was friendly and sitting outside at a picnic table was a nice way to spend sometime. ONLY downside was that the burgers were not prepared rare as we requested and were cooked to well. They were still very enjoyable. read more

The owners are the charm of the General Store as they have created something that was from a time past. The sandwiches, pizza and home made fudge are always spot on and if you are lucky enough to get a grilled blueberry muffin in the morning then it will be a good day. Don't miss out on the haddock melts on Fridays. They are the best and worth the trip from wherever you are. read more

What a great find this place was. There did not seem to be too many open options on the day were were in Rockland so we tried Th Owls Head General Store . They have at least one if everything you might need , food , gifts, take out , wine, beer, books household items ... the list goes on and on . We tried the gingerbread fudge from a large selection o fudge . The gingerbread was amazing and went home with some toffee fudge which was good but the gingerbread fudge was excellent . Tried a chicken salad sandwich/ they even had gluten free rolls. Chicken salad was very good . The people who worked there were welcoming and efficient. I am still amazed how well stocked and beautifully the merchandise was they have made excellent use of a small space . I will definitely stop in next time I am near by. read more

Wow! This little store has a little of everything. Their sandwiches are filling and they have picnic tables outside. The staff is friendly and helpful. It feels like an old country store with a few groceries and some cute knicknacks and gifts. Their fudge is great too. read more

If you're in Camden, Rockport or Rockland you have to go. A small general store & take out spot on the way to Owls Head Light House. A local recommended this place and it was amazing & the burger was voted the "Best in Maine." What we ordered: Burger / Medium / No modifications Coffee Fudge It took a while to make, but good things take time right? The burger is huge, flavorful and the toppings/sauces were the perfect amount. Outside the store to the right they have picnic tables or if you want to really take it to go, Owls Head Light is only a few minutes drive up the road. We also had the coffee fudge which we split later that night, a great price compared to tourist trap spots in the harbor towns. read more

Our family attempts to come to Maine every year if possible. All year long between visits, Owl's Head General Store is all we talk about. The burgers are fresh, the owner is friendly, the experience is always a homemade quality. I love the bountiful menu, drinks, and take home options. Terrible experience. We stopped by for lunch after seeing the lighthouse. After ordering what we didn't want since they was out of ham we was told it would be around 25 minutes, not too bad. It did seem a little long since it's lunch meat but ok. After 30 minutes my wife asked when it would be done and they said shortly. After 45 minutes and people who ordered burgers after us and ate was leaving we complained and got our food. We was way behind schedule so I threw it in the garbage. My wife took two bites and said it wasn't good and threw hers away. Don't go unless you want to pay $30 for a couple sandwiches and have a lot of time to spend. read more

The food was INCREDIBLE but the wait was crazy. Called an hour ahead to order takeout, and still waited about 20 minutes in the crowded store. The place was absolutely mobbed! I would definitely recommend getting takeout from here, but definitely call WAY ahead! read more

Boy is this place popular -- and it's easy to see why. While crowded when we went and without much available seating, we soldiered on and ordered "Maine's Best Burger (so says Food Network). I'm here to say right now I don't think Food Network tried all the burgers in Maine -- it's not the best burger there. It was good, don't get me wrong, but for me there wasn't anything mind-blowing about it that would make me stand up and shout, "Yes! BEST! BEST! BEST!" Well, ya know. Everyone was super friendly and it was delightful to have that little general store feel, kinda of a piece of lost Americana in a way. We found a place to sit and enjoyed our burgers. One of the kids with us ordered a turkey sandwich which did look amazing, but I don't know how it tasted. Might have been 4 stars but for the over-sell on the burger. It's all about expectations vs reality, people. read more

Great burger! We got the 7 napkin burger and the thickness of the patty, amount of fresh lettuce, onion and tomato makes this a delicious and satisfying burger! It's like you went to your aunt and uncle's house and they were grilling burgers and made the best home grilled burgers you've ever had. Nothing fancy about it, just perfect proportions and freshness of ingredients. The garden area next store is private property but has the prettiest flowers. read more

They don't know what they are offering on their own menu and they don't listen well to the orders given (side note chicken shouldn't be chewy in sandwiches of any kind). The plus side to this experience was that they did not skimp on the quantity, just disappointed that when I found someplace, they did not deliver as they wrote on the menus given. read more

Home of the "Seven Napkin Burger." The hospitality there was awesome and the burger made it even better! Didn't try any of their other items on their menu as we heard such great things about the burger. It did not disappoint! Jonah's crab as you can expect was sweet and delicious but a pain to eat using your fighting tools however, the dip was heavenly. BF had the burger, he was surprised that you can't modify it, but thoroughly enjoyed how unique it was, I told him, the chef takes pride how he prepares his food, so you either take it as it is or get something else. Keep an open mind. And I had the overnight beef shank, wow, simple yet delicious, fork tender and luscious marrow. The celery and fennel salad added brightness to the dish and the blue cheese wasn't overwhelming. And I don't like blue cheese and this creativity made me wanting it more. I had a Black Manhattan cocktail, supposedly differing from an ordinary Manhattan by use of a different kind of bitters (Amaro) and "filthy cherries." These seemed like basic good quality maraschinos to me (3); nothing "filthy" about them. Nevertheless it was good, fruity, and ample strength. The appetizer selection was small and heavy on bread-based items. (No free table bread was available - grrrr.) Most didn't appeal but the Roasted Garlic did, served with bread (2 kinds: a toasted crostini and a fresh crusty sourdough). The garlic was a whole head, sliced open for easy access and presented on a very hot plate, sweet and mellow from long slow roasting, and served with a choice of cheeses (molten blue, brie, whipped feta, or chèvre) - I chose chèvre and it was very good and a generous portion. A very simple dish not often encountered in restaurants. In retrospect this was the best part of the meal. I felt a little rushed at times and impatient at other times. It took a very long time to get the appetizer so I had nothing to dilute the effects of the strong cocktail. But then more than once I was asked about my entree before I was ready; once when ordering the appetizer and another time soon after I received it and hadn't made up my mind yet. I held my ground and told them I wasn't quite ready, and they accepted that and I took my time eating. There was an eclectic selection of wines by the glass. I had an interesting rosé from Slovenia. My entree was a roasted fish filet (halibut I think? It's no longer listed on the menu) served over a tomato-based sauce. This sauce was richly scented and complex and the plate was attractively garnished with micro greens. But the fish was on the small side and the flavor was monotonous - no discernible browning on the top. The other component, probably an herby cucumber-yogurt sauce resembling raita, which should have been a cool complement to the hot tomato broth, instead was melting unattractively and dispersing into it. Perhaps most disappointing, there was nothing else to this dish. It needed a starch or something (rice, boiled potatoes, or even more of those very good breads from the appetizer - wish I had saved some.) So it's good I got the appetizer first, or I would have left rather hungry. Desserts were also very limited and most didn't appeal. I decided on the Clafouti, which is a baked tart, thicker and heavier than flan, with fruit (black cherries) It was way too hot, didn't have enough fruit, and ice cream would be a far better choice than the amorphous blob of whipped cream it was served with. I should have skipped dessert. It was so boring. As for ambience: it's a crowded, noisy place but in a pleasing way. Very small, and I had reserved one of the 6 seats at the bar (I was dining solo). It's whimsically decorated, like with the grape-covered nude statue holding a candle. There was attractive artwork on the walls, some of which I believe was for sale. I did detect smoky odors coming from the kitchen that other reviewers have noted but I consider that a positive thing, not a negative. So come here if you wish. Check it out and form your own opinion. As for me, I wasn't sufficiently impressed and wouldn't return.

They have an amazing wood fired grill but the food had barely any hint of what that provides to the flavor. Plus our oysters were dry, like they'd been shucked hours before.
