This sub shop is a Springfield staple since the early 90's. Highly recommend a trip to any of their locations for a wonderful sub made from this independent sub shop! The El Italiano on any of their local baked breads served hot is my favorite, but don't be afraid to venture out on the menu for other amazing favorites! It's always made fast and efficiently from a great staff member, hats off to the guy wearing the chef hat that will repeat your order back to you continuously and also joke and give you a laugh with his dry sense of humor! My brother will drive down from Chicago and will make this a for sure stop for one of their delicious subs! Never disappoints in the 35+ years they have been open! Absolutely love this place! The subs are so good. I got the beefeater which is roast beef and cheddar cheese on sweet bread. Very good, good amount of meat, and other toppings. The roast beef is very good quality meat. I highly recommend the sweet bread. The guy that made our subs was so nice and funny. I could tell he loved his job. I don't want to make this place sound bad, but neither of the locations in Springfield are clean. The bathrooms are pretty gross. I really don't care thought, food is good. Great sandwiches. Great service. Love the egg salad in particular and we also love the ham and swiss! Great stuff.

This is one of those cool "non-chain"sandwich spots. The dude making the sandwiches, was very cool and recommended a sort of mash up of two of the sandwiches on the menu. You know that is always the way to go in these type of places. Just let the pro's do their thing and you won't be let down. I don't remember; since I am writing this a couple of weeks since I was there, what exactly the sandwich was but it was very good. Great size and taste. Nothing too special about the ambiance, other than the guy working the counter being so helpful and nice. When I was in SPI a friend asked me if there was any must have places that I try to get to when I'm in town. I said Mel O Cream of course, and anywhere that I can get a ponyshoe. Then I remembered, Monty's! They make a great sub. The Gobbler and The Hamlet are my normal go to sandwiches. You can keep it cold or have them toast it up in the oven. I like to get it toasted. The meat to cheese to bread ratio is usually off bc they put a lot of meat on them. One sub ends up being two or three meals for me! This last visit I decided to try the Reuben. It was good. Used to be amazing. But lately it has been lacking. The last few times I have been like, did they forget to put the rest of the meat on my sandwich... I would rather the price go up and the product stay the same. It was always a must stop when visiting or going through town, even buying an extra for later. I used to love Monty's, but today when I asked them to cut 3 subs in half, I was charged for a simple cut. Since when did Monty's get so greedy? In all the years I've gone there, I've never been charged for 1/2 sandwiches before when I purchased an entire sandwich. I told them not to wrap the 2 halves of each of the subs separately, but they did. I guess to justify the extra charges. When I asked if I was charged extra for the cuts, I was told yes but that "it wasn't that much". Hopefully, this treatment is only at the Monty's on the west side off Wabash. read more

My first visit to Monty's on Bruns Lane since the pandemic started. They have a large selection of subs and more, but my favorite has always been the egg salad. It still is. There are chucks of eggs, not a paste like other places, and the flavor really comes through. Just the right amount of mayo, the the sweet bread is the perfect complement, at least for me. The service was poor, the food order was wrong and both sandwiches ordered to be toasted were burnt. The man working interrupted us while we tried to order, spoke as though we were burdening him and was overall rude to us while we were there. We asked for 2 sandwiches to be half, and he made them whole and charged us for the price of it being a whole, even after we corrected him and said they were supposed yo be half, one sandwich was ordered and on the menu specifies it includes cheddar cheese, except the sandwich we received does not include cheddar cheese. We will not be returning for the overpriced but low quality sandwiches and service provided by this location. read more

Hit or miss service/friendliness/quality of soup depending on which location, but I have been coming here since they first opened the west end location off wabash religiously for the "Hamlet" on Wheat with the works. I dont ususlly like wheat rolls, but their's is homemade and so good. If it was based on the sandwich or that bread alone my review would be a resounding, shining 5 stars. It is really that good. Perfect lean pillowy shaved smoked ham, generously portioned, with melted swiss and a beautiful combo of thinly shredded lettuce, onion, tomato,mayo and an amazing house dressing with herbs that makes everything UMPTIOUS. GET IT ALL. The bread is lightly toasted so the cheese melts, but doesnt get too hard. You get a sweetness from the dough and a chewiness with the crispy toastiness. Omg...perfection and best eaten there freshly prepared or quickly devoured in your car like I do...lol. I used to always get the lighterbiter but now the soup has changed over the years and isnt as good imo. oh well, just order the sandwich and all will be well. read more

We stopped by Monty's today to grab sandwiches. The nice man running the register was obviously new, but doing a great job. There were a lot of people and he was trying to get people through as quickly as possible. Then it went downhill. Apparently he forgot to upcharge on a sandwich for extras and the OWNER starting yelling at him and humiliating him in front of everyone ... OVER $2.00. We felt awful for the poor man. I would have said something and walked out if it wasn't for my daughter. The owner also kept constantly and loudly repeating every part of everyone's order and making weird comments. I felt like we were in a bad episode of Rain Man. Then before we could even complete our order and leave, he was being nasty to the poor guy again. I really wish I would have had $2 in cash to throw at him. What a horrible individual. I hope the guy quits! I won't be going back to that one or recommending it. Jefferson Street is. Delicious soups and subs. They have fantastic bread, it's not just a vehicle to get the meat and cheese to your mouth. It actually has flavor. They have a good selection and you can get subs hot or cold. I love the toasted Reuben and the cheesehead. I don't think I have had a bad sub there at all. As far as soup, I am not a soup eater but they have a delicious cheese soup and a cream of mushroom that is so good. The staff neither friendly nor unfriendly, they are just there. Every once in a while there is a friendly person but they mostly are just silent. read more

Ok, I love Monty's. I have loved it for years, and spent one summer as such a regular that they could start my order as soon as I drove up. The Turkey Tom and the Cheesehead are my go-to favorites. They also have awesome cookies and brownies. However, since I have moved away and only get to go here on occasion, I have noticed a disheartening decline in the store. They have always had the understaffed problem, usually two guys max working behind the counter, but they're quick so it's not a huge deal. I was in here in July while visiting home, and the place was a mess. Honestly I think they just need an overhaul... new floors and benches. I can remember when the big high-top table in the front was brand new, and now it's just sad looking. This isn't to say the food doesn't still rock, because it does. The staff is just as nice as ever too. So if you're in the neighborhood, give it a shot. Ignore the dinginess, your taste buds will thank you. read more

Great locally owned, small chain of sub shops. All are made to order right in front of you (Subway Style). The subs are pretty good and I love the soups and cookies as well. They have subs served cold or toasted but the ovens are a bit out of date. The subs are never hot all the way through more simply toasted on the outside. The subs can be a bit bland so have them add seasoning or dressing. Still, these subs are really good :-) read more

Subs always dry- cheese sliced so thin you can see through it- no pickles- barely enough meat to call it a sandwich...i wonder how much effort went into making these subs CHEAPER! Hey Monty's! Try working on making a great sub with a fair profit margin and people will come! Cutting corners to make an extra nickel per sandwich is a losing idea. I love your delicious, soft french bread that is baked fresh daily....mmmmm. 3. "Everything" means lettuce, tomato, onions, italian seasoning, oil, mayo-what a great combo-minus the onions for me. 4. Your cheese soup is a wonderful addition to my cheesy, cheesy sandwich. 5. Your meat sandwiches are pilled high with delicious, fresh deli meat. 6. Let me preface by saying that we drove to three restaurants at 2:30 on a Saturday before we came here....everyplace was closed for the day. So, finding this place is a little bit of a challenge, because half of the sign is broken off...look for "Monty" with a yellow background. There was ONE guy working, and he was busy. The entire time we were there, he was preparing food. He was pleasant, although really sniffly, which made me watch him a lot. He wore gloves and was sanitary. The location- it was sorta dirty. Ok, not sorta- just was. The floor hasn't seen a good scrubbing in a long time. I am not going to ding them for all of the tables having stuff on them; it was busy and he was alone. The food prep area looked fine enough. The food- I had a gobbler. The bread was really good. They use iceberg lettuce, which has no flavor and no nutritional value, but it was ok. The onion was mild. I got the dressing on the side, and my husband and I both agreed that it was fantastic. I really liked it a lot. The sandwich was huge, so that in itself was PLENTY...no chips or soup needed. Would I go back, when in Springfield, absolutely! But, I will make sure that I am not there during the heat of the lunch hour- I am betting it's packed and takes a bit. read more

Popped in for a late lunch based on Yelp reviews. Only 1 guy working but he was very pleasant. The shop is certainly not much to look at but I know that means nothing about the food, and that is certainly true of Monty's. My Cuban on the grill press was good- you can tell they use good quality ingredients. Kelly's Gobbler sandwich was excellent - again good quality ingredients but both of us agreed it was the house Italian dressing on it the really made the sandwich. You can really taste the garlic in the Italian- yum! We are definately looking forward to going back again next time we are in Springfield. read more

Monty's is a decent sammich. Used to be the only game in town so where we went for lunch when running errands on the weekends. Always busy so be prepared to stand in line, esp on a weekday. Good sandwiches, great bread (we like wheat), haven't tried anything else. Hubs likes the Hamlet, I like the Italiano. The food is awesome, sometimes the bread is old and dry but when it's not the sandwiches are perfect. My only issue is the service of ONE of their employees is absolutely horrendous. I think he may be the owner- always wears an oversized chefs hat. He is extremely rude, every time I come in his first words are "how can I be of dis-service to you?" And then proceeds to interrupt me anytime I try to continue talking to tell him what I want on the sandwich- resulting in my order always being incorrect. The business is great, they just need to re-evaluate having this man representing their company because he is terrible. It's to the point where I won't go to the Montvale location anymore. read more

It really seems finding a place to make a good sandwich west of Lake Erie is like trying to find that notorious needle. Went here on the gf's reco for a quick bite. Got the Cuban. Pork was actually decent quality which was what I was most worried about. Filling inside the sandwich was just light on all accounts and the meat to veggie ratio was borderline abysmal. I ate the whole thing in about 2 minutes and was still quite hungry. Certainly not breathtaking, barely even noteworthy. Monty's Subs makes a good sandwich, probably the best one can get in Springfield. Never a long wait, big simple menu and cool reusable plastic cups. But more importantly they have great bread and and a zesty homemade special sauce that gives their sandwiches a nice bite. But don't mess around and get something different like an all cheese or a Rueben. These could be good in another setting but at Montys I recommend turkey, ham, or both. read more

If I lived in Springfield still, I would be addicted to Monty's. The bread is soft and a tiny bit sweet and the turkey that they use is fantastic. I also really love the spicy deli mustard that they have - ask for it on your sandwich and it will make your little nosey tingle! My only problem is that there seems to always be a line and while I realize it takes time to make a nice, fresh, sandwich, I wish the making of the sandwiches was just a tiny bit quicker - like as in could use another body to help out sometimes quicker. Oh - and if you're a fan of Diet Mt. Dew like I am, then you will be glad to know that this is one of those rare establishments that has it so yay for that! read more
