Ordered 4 subs for pickup. When I arrived 10 minutes past the promised time, they were not ready. Then after waiting 10 more minutes for them to make the subs the order was completely wrong. I ordered a veggie turkey, chicken marinara, turkey sub and pastrami. What I got: 2 veggie subs none with turkey, an Italian and a pastrami. So 1 sub out of 4 were correct. Its very unassuming with the vibe of a Ben and Jerry's, bright colors and tie dye included. You can select from the menu or build your own sub if you prefer to live outside of the box. Service has always been pleasant and quick. As a bonus, they have a coke fusion machine so sky is the limit if you're a soda drinker. On our most recent trip we got a meatball sub served with provolone. It was served hot, cheesy, and delicious. The bread was perfectly crisp on the outside. Huge fan of this place! I have loved coming here since I was 18 years old and they only had one location. I'm happy for them for having the ability to expand and create a larger presence within SPFD. I always like the fresh subs at Head West and the west side location on Robbins is now my favorite. Their "sweet" bread and wheat bread are both great, my kids love the turkey piled high with provolone cheese. My husband and I love the vegetarian sandwich options; my favorites are the "veggie" sub on sweet (which has its own list of veggies) but love the cold hummus sandwich on wheat with green peppers, while he prefers the heated Griller sub (veggie patties) on wheat. Their vegetable soup is good, too! I'm always happy to support this local business. My sons were loud today but hungry they actually asked to buy another sandwich (seconds)--so they got to go up, order, and pay--they were treated with respect, just like any paying customer. I lived in Springfield for about 15 years and watched these guys grow from one shop to a handful. Apparently, they are now closing in on a double-digit number of stores. The wife and I used to refer to their product as "stoner subs" and it was my opinion that they made the best sandwiches in town. Naturally, when I found myself in Springfield and in need of a quick lunch I knew I had to get to one of their locations. If you're a local you already know these dudes. You may prefer Monty's but I won't hold that against you. Actually, I will hold it against you - Head West makes far better sandwiches and the atmosphere is much more enjoyable. If you're not a local, you need to know this: sweet bread is what you want unless you're getting a reuben. In almost all cases, you also want your sub toasted. I really like their meatball, the turkey-bacon-ranch and the ham & cheese. Their vegetables are always really fresh and the employees are generous with the veges if you ask for a little more of anything. One last note...contrary to what you might think, you aren't getting a pot brownie for a buck here or anywhere else. The Coca-Cola Freestyle machine was a nice upgrade from my last visit which would have been sometime in late 2012. read more

I had the #9: turkey, ham, roast beef & provolone: toasted. The two young men who were working there & made my sandwiches were not friendly and never cracked a smile during the whole time I was there. They seemed to be bored & annoyed to be working. I visit Springfield a few times a year to visit family. I've tried Head West a couple of times for late evening dinners. The subs are good, but they don't quite give me the "wow, these things are great!" feeling that so many others seem to get. The sweet bread is OK, but it gets a bit soggy for my tastes. I had a meatball sub that I thought was just OK. The second time I got a tuna sub that was quite good, with a more-than-generous amount of tuna salad, but it needed more veggies to counter the heaviness of the tuna salad. read more

This was a regular stop for my mom and I when I still lived in Springfield. The subs are always very good. In the end the bread is what makes the difference between a good sub and a great sub. Chain sub shops are just OK because they use generic bread. Head West is great because they make their own sweet bread that is wonderful on it's own but when used for a sub is awesome. So I just visited Monty's subs upon recommendation but left a little disappointed compared to how much it was talked up. After a little yelp research, I found Head West and decided to give it a shot. BLOWN AWAY! Food was so good. Everything was noticeably fresh. I ordered the 2 for 6$ deal and my half sandwich was still pretty big for a half and was overstuffed with the turkey and provolone. I also topped with all the fresh veggies that were offered and the sweet bread just made the perfect yummy storm to tame my hunger. I also got a bowl of the roasted veggy & radiatore soup which had a great flavor, odd pairing for July I know but it sounded to good to resist and I had no regrets with the decision. My only regret was during my visit to Springfield I only visited Head West once, they have lots of very appealing sandwiches and upon my next visit this might just be my lunch stop for the duration of my visit. Wow! The white bread is awesome! I'm glad he didn't ask what kind of bread I wanted because I probably would have said wheat and would have been missing out huge. The sub options are pretty standard what you would find at a sub shop. I had the the #9 turkey, ham, and roast beef, the standard comes with mayo and italian dressing with veggies. I was a little skeptical of the lettuce being toasted but who really gives a shit. This sub was awesome. Matt had the #9 as well and Brad had an Italian. They had both been before. As I was the last one fishished, I figured we would start our drive home, but first Brad needed to let his food digest a little I suppose. Well me being my impatient self, and not sure of the next time I would make it into Head West, had to order another sub. The bread was too good to pass up! The meatball this time. The meat balls were kinda small and seemed to get lost in the bread, but that bread! Matt got another sub too, the Italian this time. The workers were decent enough. These are the best sub sandwiches bar none. For starters there is no measuring protocol for how much meat goes on a sandwhich which is completely opposite of all of the sub shops which count out the slices or weigh it. At Headwest, they make you a great sandwich which means there is a substantial amount of meat and toppings. I wish I knew the recipe for their sweet bread which is flat out addicting. I have taken many a disbeliever here and turned them into converts that they truly do make the best sub sandwiches.
