This was my first experience patronizing McAllister's Deli in Springfield, Illinois and it was a dumpster fire. I attempted to place an online order for a baked potato with butter and sour cream only for pickup at the Iles location, but the Cheesy Spud didn't offer any option to omit the cheese. I decided to then call the Iles location and spoke with a lady to place my order for pick up. She did not tell me her name when she answered my call. I told her at least twice that I wanted a baked potato with butter and sour cream only, on the side, and NO CHEESE. I specifically told her that I had tried to order online, but could not omit the cheese from the Cheesy Spud so I was now calling to place my order. I asked her if I could pick up my order at the drive up window and she said she had to finish placing my order and it would tell her if it was available for pick up. After taking my order, she confirmed that I could pick it up at the drive-through window. When I asked her for my total, she replied, "I've already closed out your order, so I don't know the amount. They'll tell you the amount when you pick it up." I thought that was both extremely unprofessional and odd. I arrived at McAllister's on Iles and drove to the drive up window, where I was informed that I could not get my order, and, instead, needed to go into the restaurant and pay. (The employee who took my order over the phone did not tell me that I needed to pay for my order at that time in order to pick up at the drive-through.) I then went inside and paid for my order and I had the good sense to open the bag and look to see if my order was correct. Not surprisingly, there was cheese on my plain baked potato and the receipt on the bag listed my order as "Cheesy Spud." I brought my "Cheesy Spud" back to the counter and told an employee that I had specifically told the employee who took my phone order that I didn't want cheese on the potato, only butter and sour cream, on the side. I said that I didn't know the name of the employee who took my phone order because she didn't tell me her name. The employee behind the counter was now joined by 2 other employees and they all said that no one there had taken a phone order for a plain baked potato and accused me of calling the other McAllister's Deli location on Dirksen. The 3 employees couldn't understand that it made absolutely no sense that I had called the Dirksen store but my order was for pickup on Iles. However, they did make me a plain baked potato with butter and sour cream, on the side. After I got home, I thought to check my call log and the phone number I had dialed was, indeed, the Iles location's phone number. Again, my experience as a first time customer showed me that there is a real circus of monkeys working at McAllister's Deli on Iles in Springfield, Illinois. read more

It's a favorite spot for a quick lunch for work or with the family. There is so much variety, everyone gets what they want. They have dairy, gluten, veg options. I also like supporting them as the ingredients are fresh and the food is filling and a good value. The workers are also a hardworking crew. They are always friendly and try their best. New deli in Springfield comparable to Panera or Corner Bakery. The specialize in sandwiches, hot or cold, soups, and gourmet salads. You order at the counter and then they bring the food to your table. The best thing about Mcalisters was the service. Everyone was friendly and eager to please. Update: Had lunch here again with hubby while out shopping over the weekend. I had the McAlisters Club wrap with potato soup (soup is awesome). He had the roast beef sandwich and potato salad which he always says "tastes like yours", that's a compliment! Enjoyed having lunch at this little hideaway, hubby is having the Smoky Pepper Jack Turkey sandwich and I'm trying the Justaspud today. Both are Very good!! I went there this evening and tried again ( they messed things up last time) Tonight I ordered a baked potato and drink...told to pull into curbside. I sit there for about 10 minutes and finally a boy walks out to say: we are out of spuds. His quote: I might be able to get them to give you a refund. Ummm.. yes. So, I hand him the receipt and he comes back in about 10 more minutes with money. When I finally arrive home after having to go somewhere else's I realize I didn't get my full refund. Finally made it to McAlister's and enjoyed a good toasted club sandwich, with a side of fresh fruit. Staff were eager to assist although they seemed a little confused or unsure of themselves, may be a new crew, not sure. As others have stated the parking lot at this location is a bit crowded and a little dangerous if not paying attention. I'm happy they opened a second location on E Side of town. Great menu items with lots of combos and sides available. Large tea selection, made by adding Flavored (sweetened) syrups but I indulged with the unsweetened green tea with mango. Yum. My sandwich was lightly toasted with a honey mustard spread, and mayo. Tomato and lettuce were fresh, and the pickle on the side crunchy and a little garlicky. Fresh fruit was a (bagged) mix of melon, grapes and pineapple, no freezer taste to it so that was nice. The restaurant itself is pleasant with booths and hi-tops. Nice lighting, clean floor, tables and drink counter. The best part is the music wasn't blasting. So many lunch spots have the music set too loud and it really gets annoying. Tuned to Sirius XM classic vinyl and played softly in the background. Crowd ranged from business professionals, students, grandmas with grandkids, senior golfers. All in all a good meal and I would recommend to a friend, and definitely return. Bonus item: save your receipt and bring to next visit for a free (large!) cookie. read more

We came here today for lunch. The manager Todd is so accommodating. Before we even ordered he came over and asked if we needed anything and continued to check on us during our lunch. Food came out very quickly despite the lunch rush. Todd you're running a very good establishment and set a great example for other employees!! I came here twice within 24 hours. The first visit, I wasn't especially happy with my meal, but the others in my party were and the service was good enough that warranted another chance. Friday night I ordered a French Dip with no cheese. The meat was a little tough, but since it was within an hour of closing, I assumed it was mostly a result of the time of night. Saturday afternoon (about 12:45 pm) I ordered another French dip, but I forgot to ask for it with no cheese. I think they microwaved it to make it "hot" but by the time it was at my table, it wasn't hot. I was able to peel the half-microwaved cheese off, but the meat was still incredibly tough...to the point of which I couldn't bite through it and had to return my sandwich. To top it off, my side of Mac n cheese wasn't hot, either. The others in my party ordered cold sandwiches, which were fine. However, their side of potato salad was warm. All of the employees look very unhappy and unfriendly. When it was time to place our order, the employee did not say anything or welcome us to the counter. She just waited until we started ordering. I work in the service industry and this was NOT good service. I think they are in desperate need of a new manager to get back to company standards and new, more personable staff. Decided to try it out. Went through the drive the , Saturday about 230pm. Girl taking the order extremely rude and short with us. The menu is designed very badly, we could not find the sides. We asks what they were and the girl in the drive thru could not name them or refused too. She very aggressively with distain in her voice barked out where they were located on the menu in a very poorly placed small boxed. We asked her just to read them to us, she then again barked out the previous command again. It seems this is a regular issue, that she is tired of dealing with. She then asked for my name, I have a problem with this for many reasons, personal preference. I asked why ? I'm in the drive thru, she very angrily said so we know who the order is for. I said I'm the only one in the drive thru. When I got the receipt it had an order number on it, so no reason for my name. I almost drove off right there, I wish I did. It only gets worse. So I pull up to the window and the cashier asks me again for my name. Just bad customer service, my personal preference out weighs your need to follow some stupid policy or whatever it is. Very annoying, I ordered a Reuben and coleslaw , the " nachos" and chicken salad on croissant with coleslaw. It came to around 22$. Which if the food was good would be pretty reasonable. But it wasn't. Maybe they are just trying to be a cafeteria class restaurant, then it would make sense. I don't mind paying for quality food. My Rueben was soggy barely toasted,was not on marble rye. Who serves a Rueben on non marble rye?There was a good portion of meat, but it was extremely low quality corn beef, the Sour kraut was limp and disgusting. I'm still having stomach issues now a full 24 hours later. The coleslaw was so salty and disgusting , I literally spit it out on the ground. My wife could not eat hers. Her chicken salad on croissant was ok, nothing special . The " nachos" for 5$ was just chips and cheese. I called and complained to their corporate and the asking about the name policy and it is not part of their business model. Been there 3 or 4 times, always been happy with the food and experience. Sometimes a little hectic--you go to the counter to order, then they bring the order to your table, pretty promptly. A rather extensive menu makes it best if you already know what you want. It's certainly among the better selections for a fast lunch or dinner. Seating is adequate, but not fancy. Give it a try! It's basically a classier pot belly, and a fuller fat panera. Sandwiches, salads, etc ordered at the counter, receive a number. They have combos where you can get just 1/2 of your sandwich and any of the sides - like sweet potato waffle fried - hello! well done! - the fries that is! Service is very nice, but not amazingly speedy. I got 1/2 a reuben, it was definitely tasty but my half of my sandwich was of centered, so it was definitely a bit messy to eat! Multiple issues. First, I was going to order online, but the website states on each sandwich that it is not available at this particular location. Um ok? I tried to go yesterday, but the dining room was not open due to lack of staff. Ok. I went on my lunch hour and we (the line) had to wait for the cashier to not be gathering orders. The girl I got at the register talked at about a whisper and I have hearing issues. While I placed my order, 2 people with carry out orders had issues. One woman came back bc she didn't get au jus for her French Dip and the other didn't get salad dressing for her salad. The girl who took my order just walked away, not saying a word, so I continued standing at the register. The guy in charge finally asked me to step to the side to wait (which was fine, but the girl needs to learn to do all that she's supposed to do, not just walk away. I got my order reasonably quickly and I started to leave, thought I better check my order bc I'd asked that the horseradish be on the side bc I can't eat anything spicy bc my mouth is messed up from chemo. I felt a condiment cup in the bag so I kept going. I got home and found the horseradish on the side was extra. They still put it on the sandwich. I went through the drive-through to get my food and the person taking my order was very rude I don't know what I said in my order that made them so upset but it was not friendly at all and when he brought it out to my car it did not have my food in it. However the manager was very polite about everything which I appreciated and I didn't feel like bringing it up to him but I did want to leave a review and hopefully that person won't be on drive thru. My boyfriend and I had never been to a McAlisters before today. The manager was our first impression when we walked in. He mumbled for us to give him our order. We were still looking over the menu since we had never been. I saw the Spud menu and inquired about them. All he said to me was "potato". Literally no other words. Then he walked away and sent another staff member out. She looked at us and then walked away. We were polite the entire time and they treated us like we were not welcome. We decided to leave without ordering. The experience was horrible. We will never go back. If you continue to patronize this company, I do recommend you find another location. My husband and I would get dinner from here at least once a week. We had to stop because the quality of the food. We tried it again tonight after months and once again it was disappointing. My bread for my griller was very stale and burnt. I've gotten stale bread from here several times and had them remake a sandwich. Once you get in you realize the desserts are prepackaged the ads overblown and nothing stands out as a specialty It is a huge stretch to call this a deli. The pastrami was not very good and actually tasted like the stuff that comes in baggies in the discount meat isle of the processed foods department. My rubin sadly was served on an over processed bread that they called rye...with no endearing qualities. The meat was cold. The manager said they were having a problem with that. Later when she asked me what I thought I told her it did not taste like any pastrami I had ever had. The deli has no specialty salads or typical things found in a NY deli . Never go to a deli with an irish name first hint. Someone said the french dip was good. I'd question that.
