Stopped here for lunch on a road trip. We appreciated the quality ingredients and fair pricing for the portion. The assembly of the sandwiches was a little off (e.g heating cucumbers/veggies intended to be added after toasting (like lettuce), light on the mustard) and while friendly the staff was not super knowledgeable on pricing. Also, it was SO HOT in the restaurant. We luckily were able to eat at a table outside but ventilation was super poor in there. I felt bad for the staff who was sweaty, but that is also a little off-putting to see as they prep your food. read more

I ordered a number nine, and it was to be toasted. I received, which very much seems like a ham onion and pickle sandwich. It did have a very small amount of roast beef on a sandwich that was supposed to be ham and roast beef. It seems like this location just does not do a very good job. My family of seven and I were heading on a short three day vacation to St. Louis, MO and needed a stop for lunch prior to making it to the hotel. We were told to stop here at this local favorite sandwich shop. We ordered ahead and got the food on time as we pulled into the parking lot. The ambiance of the shop is exactly what you'd want from a small sandwich place. Nothing special but also does the job! We opted for the Italian sub and the turkey sub. Both ok sweet bread. Both were stacked with meat and made well. The reason I give this place a 4/5 stars is because it's a good place. But not special. Really like the subs here. Turkey bacon ranch was excellent. My daughter likes rare roast beef, which they did not have, but she still ate it. My wife liked her italian sub. The cookies were great. After we ate, my brother explained that this place is known for the "special" brownies they serve. The problem was, my 7 year old ordered and ate a brownie. I exchanged a look of panic with my wife before my brother laughed and said you had to ask for the brownies in a particular way and that he was sure her brownie was of the regular variety. Sooo I had a turkey and provolone on that delicious sweet bread with all basics and added jalapeños, what I especially enjoyed is they offer this Italian dressing that gives it a hoagie like feel! It's so hard to find hoagies! ...I went around 6pm wasn't crowded at all. They offer to toast or leave sandwiches cold and the sandwich isn't long but it's very hearty, I'm big on portions and portions were definitely filling. First, the negative: It is impossible for them to take a phone order correctly. I tried to do it online once, and they mixed it up. The staff were extremely unpleasant. My mask had just fell on the ground so I didn't want to wear a dirty one and asked them for a new one. They wouldn't provide me with a mask and made me go outside "to order". No one would come take my order despite them saying they'd follow me out there to do so. Best subs in Springfield! This is a local company that is so much better than the other national brands. Meat and veggies taste fresher since they come from local sources. I always get the #8 ham/turkey/provolone on sweet bread, toasted. You can also add on Kettle chips and soup. I like their broccoli cheddar, although it is a little pricey. read more

If I could I would give them a half star, it's been a while back. I went to pick up lunch for my work, it was very hot out. It was around noon & they were extremely busy. The line was out the door, one of the sandwich makers looked up and saw people holding the door open. He proceeds to YELL AT EVERYONE by the door!!! I understand it was hot out, but you don't yell at the customers. Ask then nicely to close the door. The way I look at it, there is plenty of other sub shops that doesn't yell at you!!! read more

I live one block from a Subway, less than 5 minutes from a Quiznos and almost 10 minutes from this Head West. I choose Head West almost every time. Let's start with the atmosphere. You walk in and it just screams HIPPY. From the art on the walls to the music. It is very psychedelic. The store is small with a few seats. If Penny Lane sold sandwiches... The staff is great too. They know the product. They even add to the decor. Every time I go there, there is at least 4 guys behind the counter making sandwiches. All but one look like hippies (and I'm sure some might be high). But who am I to judge a book by its cover. They are fast and friendly. That's all that counts. The food is excellent. The sandwiches are classic ingredients combined in great ways. My favorite is the pastrami and provolone. The meat is good and the veggies are fresh. The bread is special. Always get the sweet bread. I could live on HW sweet bread and be happy. They have Coke dispenser but I always get a Jones Soda (they have em in glass bottles). They have organic brownies that I have yet to try as well as single serving bags of chips. They also have Odwalla (if you're into that). The price is great. It is on par with other sub shops like Quiznos but a bit more than Subway. However, these are among the bigger and most filling sandwiches you'll find. I can barely finish one and many people I know can't even eat half. A Springfield staple that you won't find on the tourist list. If you visit Springfield, you can go to D'arcy's, Joe Roger's, Charlie Parker's and all those places. However, you must go to Head West. read more

We were here for lunch in August while traveling through Springfield. I like to support local businesses and the long line when we walked in had me feeling optimistic. But our visit was disappointing. The staff was super friendly and explained the menu options but the place was just plain dirty. Tables were sticky and there were flies everywhere. Sandwiches were just okay. Not a fan of the sweet bread - maybe it's an acquired taste. We each got a half sandwich and chips. These are pretty awesome sub's. I had the turkey and ham with pepper jack. The sweet bread is pretty amazing. This was my first time here. Next time I will get a half sandwich. The full size was just too much. The turkey and ham was a good quality, not like what you would get at Subway. They have Coke, not Pepsi, which made me happy. As a bonus, they had Cherry Coke. This is a small business, so you might need to wait when ordering. The food alone earns a 5; however, I gave them a 4 based on attention to detail in the eating area. The prices are good. When ordering, make sure you know ALL sandwiches come with their basics unless you state otherwise. We didn't realize this and they easily remade our sandwich, but it would have been better if we had realized this when ordering. This company, while they make a decent sandwich and have a fairly decent reputation in the community, has a little-known yet wide-spread issue concerning employee relations. They do not respond to human resource questions or concerns nor do they give employees a way to contact them, except for a corporate number that never gets answered and is equipped with a voicemail box that seems to be full (and thereby unavailable) at all times. Furthermore, the store managers are directed to offer no assistance when employees make any human resource inquiries. Head West is owned and operated by Matthew & Grace Bluhm. They do not appear to have a shred of concern for those associates who keep the store running for them. This is not an isolated situation either. The company has a history of treating their employees poorly and with disdain. Currently, there are several employees who have not received their W-2 statements (due January 31st) as of this date. Further, the management has not made a single, good-faith effort to remedy this. What makes this current situation even more troubling is that many of the employees are college students, some of which are in peril of losing their tuition grants because tax forms have not been received, making it impossible to file federal income taxes, which is a requirement for the grant application/approval process. For the record, I am not currently or previously affiliated with Headwest, Inc. in any way. I am not writing this as a disgruntled employee but as a concerned member of the local community. I am writing this review simply as a concerned consumer who has intimate knowledge of this situation as a result of knowing a number of current and former Head West managers, supervisors and regular hourly associates. As much as I like the company's products and I have always admired their 'hip' business model and atmosphere, this has put a really bad taste in my mouth and they have lost my business. I cannot patronize a business, particularly one that is local & family-owned, who treats their employees so poorly and without any regard to the hardships that their apathy & flippant attitudes continue to cause. This is shameful and unprofessional. I cannot respect a business that treats its people like an afterthought. There is simply no excuse. If you take issue as well, I encourage you to leave your own review and to take the time to reach out to these owners to compel them to take a step forward to do the right thing and treat their employees with common dignity and address their needs. When visiting Springfield we were in search of a healthy option outside of the normal hamburgers and fries ring and found Head West. After reading the reviews we decided to give it a try. First Impression: it was just like most peoples review, a little hippie but not anything I would worry about. I liked that there were 2 in uniform military personnel at a table eating their lunch. Both my wife and I decided on the pick two and got a Salad and Sandwich, she got a turkey and I got a roast beef sandwich. I noticed that they had some music playing and that the guy making our sandwiches and salads couldn't hear us unless we really raised our voices. I had to repeat myself about 5 times to have him hear my order. He also seemed pretty inattentive and was pretty much rushing through everything even though we were the only ones in line. It was also a little off putting that I couldn't see the sandwich being made because the counter was so ridiculously high. I personally like the other two popular sandwich shops because I can see that ingredients and how they are making the sandwich. Either way we got our food and it was pretty good, not the best I have had or mind blowing in any way. The salad was good but I had to ask for dressing which was just odd. Also some of the lettuce on the sandwich and salad was on the verge of going bad, it was darkening and was a little unappetizing, but it was not a huge deal but I wondered how often the lettuce was changed out. All in all it was a decent amount of food for a decent price but I don't expect to be back in Springfield anytime soon to test this place out again. read more

I've always loved Head West when I lived in Springfield years ago. I was visiting family this week and checked the place out again - it's exactly as I remember, great staff and fun decor. I ordered the BBQ Chicken sub as there wasn't much of a healthy options menu (you'd guys do well to incorporate sprouts and avocado on some subs - just saying!) but it was delicious and the bread every bit of yummy as I remember.
