Based on the recommendation of a neighbor who had used them earlier this year, I asked Monticello for an estimate to remove two sycamore trees. Ivan arrived on the agreed-upon day and gave me a very competitive estimate. In addition Ivan know a lot about several varieties of trees in our neighborhood and the good and bad features of each. We set up a tentative date for the job. I checked all the concerns I have for any contractor: 1.) Written estimate. 2.) Active contractor license. 3.) Workers Comp insurance. 4.) Bonded. 100% OK in all areas. (Check State Contractors License Board for yourself.) On the day of the job, Monticello showed up promptly at 8:00 am with three trucks. The equipment appeared to be heavy duty and well-maintained. The crew of 6 all wore hard hats, hearing and vision protection and got right to work. They quickly located the owner of a car in their way so it could be moved. In less than 90 minutes the two trees had gone through their chipper and the remote-control stump grinder had reduced the stumps to a pile of chips. I'll have to say that the entire crew really hustled and appeared to be enjoying their work. The big plus here was that even though the trees had been planted right next to a fenced-in back yard about 15 years ago--they were large trees--no cut limbs were allowed to fall into the fenced-in area; no one had to enter the yard at all to retrieve any branches. I observed Monticello tree cutters working near my home. I asked if they could give me an estimate for a large tree leaning over from the creek bank behind my home, which was leaning toward my shop building. They came over after completing their work at the nearby residence. They gave me an estimate immediately and returned the next day to cut critical branches away from the tree. The creek was several feet below, so they strung rope to position themselves in the tree, above the creek for the cutting. They cleaned up everything afterwards. I thought the workers were friendly and knowledgeable in their profession. I felt the price was fair. I would recommend them and hire them again. read more

I was given a very good estimate to cut down and dispose of two trees that were blocking my new Solar Panels. After getting some more not so good estimates, I contacted Monticello and scheduled the service. The guys came on time at 8 am, estimated what had to be done, and went right to work. They finished before noon. They used a chipper on their truck to get rid of the waste. They cleaned up the area and left it looking better than when they arrived. GREAT JOB! What a difference a year makes. My initial encounter with Nestor one year ago went smoothly. He was responsive, showed up on time, and did great work. One year later, not so good. I called yesterday and spoke to Nestor about a small tree to be removed. He said he would be out the next day, no problem since it was small. I sent Nestor my address per his request along with pics of small tree. Asked what time he planned to arrive. No response. This morning I called at 9:30am to see when he planned to arrive. He said 2-3pm. It's now 4:30pm. No call. No response to my text and his VM box is full. Not the way to run a business in its infancy. I will go elsewhere. What a shame. read more

I wrote the original review about four years ago, and assumed Nestor and his crew removed the tree stump correctly. They didn't. Apparently they didn't go down the recommended two feet, and left much of the stump intact. Over the next few years, the pearless pear tree returned as a giant thorny shrub that grew like a weed. Even after taking a chainsaw to the shrub and injecting poison into the stump, new sprouts appeared every day. Finally I hired a different tree service that not only went down the required two feet, but gave me a personal guarantee that if I ever see sprouts again, they'd return and dig out any sprouts again at no charge. I don't like to revise my review to fewer stars but, simply put, Monticello Tree Service did not take care of the problem I hired them to take care of. read more

We had Monticello Tree Service out a few years ago and they did a great job. Not so this time. The team was late, did a rushed job, and raced off leaving a big mess behind. Nestor said they would return and clean up but they never did, despite repeated messages from us. I'll be charitable and say perhaps they are overextended? We ended up having to clean up ourselves (we are old) and have big piles of debris stacked in the street because there has been no green waste pickup for two months. read more

Got Nestor's name from my gardener who had been using his services the past 4 years. Nestor was friendly, honest about what could be done with my 4 trees on my property and my neighbor's trees overhanging my house. All other tree services were only able to trim back the lower branches of my neighbor's 30 feet redwoods but Nestor and his team was able to climb up and cut back all the branches so they didn't hang over my roof. Did a great job re-shaping and thinning out my other trees that I thought were over-grown and needed to be cut down. Prices were more than reasonable. read more

They also completed a (major) tree trimming of my front ornamental tree. However, most recently I have made two appointments with Nestor and he's been a NO-SHOW both times! I had made time out of my busy schedule to accommodate his schedule and both times I was stood up! Not even a phone call to apologize or reschedule. NOTHING! Fool me once, shame on you. The neighbors behind me used Nestor Hernandez Tree Care to trim their trees. While we were away at work, without our permission, Nestor's crew entered our property by breaking into our gate, moved our BBQ, plants, and pet items and left trash and a water bottle behind in our yard. They left the gate unlocked when they left, which could have been a hazard for my dog and cat which use my yard. There was not even a note saying that they had entered our yard, much less broken into it. Nestor's crew led my neighbor to believe we were home and had given permission for them to enter which we did NOT. I tried to contact Nestor, but I could not leave a voicemail because his voicemail is full. We have contacted the police about this matter. I would also like to update that based on our neighbors description, the debris that fell on our side of the property did not pose an immediate hazard or an emergency. To respond to Nestor's comments: We left home at 7:30 AM. We never heard a knock between 7 and 7:30. It is not unreasonable for people to be at work on a weekday during those hours. No attempt was made to contact us outside of that. Again, from my neighbors description, the material on my side of the fence was deemed not dangerous and just minor debris. It is illegal to break and enter onto someone's property without permission. You violated our home. read more
