I had Budget Tree Service come out back in 2018 and they did a great job removing a tree in the backyard. Fast forward to May 2022 when I initally called, and they have yet to remove a very tall dead redwood tree 3 months later - now it is August 4, 2022. I called them in May to have this done before the hot summer would start, now, summer is almost over and the redwood is looking quite dry and looks as if it is going to fall over onto my house or my neighbor's house any moment - see photo. I've called them several times and voiced my concerns and stressed the urgency of removing this tree. Each time I call, the person who answers does not know why it hasn't been done and has no new information to offer since last I spoke with him. I understand that it is challenging times with Covid, inflation, recession...etc. I am just frustrated with not getting a straight answer. If you say you are going to cut the tree June 6, please do so. Or if the company is inundated with too many projects or can't do it for personal reasons, just let the customer know instead of promising it will be done for 2 months. Again, 5 stars for 2018 service, only 2 stars for 2022 service (or lack of service). read more

I had a very large, old, leaning Weeping Willow tree in my front lawn, that had a thick branch touching and rubbing against the roof of a rental house I moved into in South Davis. It was also structurally weakened, because the lawn had been overwatered around it and the sprinklers hitting its trunk had started rot growing on the inside. This could be seen through the gash in its side. It even had a huge plate mushroom on one side. Beautiful fungus, but detrimental to my Willow's health. The UC Davis Plant Pathology department grad students that came to look at it, and who wrote a written report for my landlord, did not give it much chance of survival. But I had to try and save the tree, because one must try to save trees. The landlord insisted it not be cut down. I interviewed 3 Certified Arborists who came out to look at the poor Willow. As soon as Greg Smith started explaining to me what was going on with the tree, and was honest about it's chances of survival, I knew he was the one to do the job. The branch was removed, the tree reshapened and the watering regime changed. I kept my fingers crossed. 5 years later, the tree is still there and healthy! I have recommended Greg to many friends who have had trees in need of his artful, gentle, skilfull and experienced eyes and hands. All have been very happy with the results. One of trees belonged to a neighbor of mine: a magnificient English Walnut that was so immense and stunning, it looked like something out of a British Arboretum or romantic fairy tale. I don't know how, but it looked even more magical after his work was finished! He is a tree surgeon and healer. He is passionate about trees and truly loves his work. Excellent service! They responded within a week to get us an estimate, and scheduled the work promptly after we signed on. We needed to remove a huge hackberry tree in a really tight spot--in the corner of a small fenced yard, right next to our neighbor's house and over their roof. Maybe a 60 ft. high tree. The climbers cut and dropped each limb section with ropes, and with great precision. Highly skilled work, fascinating to watch. And existing piles of cuttings that couldn't be taken care of with the yard trimmings bin. Budget came in and took care of it all. Opened up the view, and they all look great. Incredibly hard workers, prompt response to my quote request, showed up on time and ready to go. And, they left the entire work site spotless (basically the entire back yard). These guys sound good and were courteous on the phone, but didn't come through. I scheduled once with them and a week later they didn't show up that morning. I called back and they said they would come the next morning. Next day, again they didn't show or call. I called them and they said they were busy on an "emergency job". I believe they have a legitimate business, but it didn't work for me. I am very disappointed at being strung along and having lost two mornings in the process. I said "no thanks" and a trying other locals services. I'm guessing others have have good experiences, but this was mine. read more

Called a few arborist to come out & give me an estimate on 2 big trees needing help. First talked to Josh who was at my neighbors house across the street working, he came over looked at my trees & gave me a very fair estimate. Greg Smith came out a few weeks later set up the appointment for the following week. Two guys showed up Josh&Danny. The two of them tackled the trees. I ended up buying them a pizza because they were NON Stop working. Did an absolutely beautiful job, left my house & street clean. Pleasant young hard working boys. Would recommend in a Heart Beat. Great service. Came out promptly to give a quote to remove a tree and grind out two stumps. We agreed on a date and time they showed up, did the work in 2.5 hours, cleaned up and done! He even hauled away some old stumps and wood my husband could not dispose of due to weight. Really appreciate their service. read more

I honestly feel like this was a scam. Terrible weather brought a tree down in our front yard and luckily it missed our house. Called Budget the next day to schedule an appointment and after several follow ups, they came by around noon the following day. Said the entire tree needed to be removed and it was a full day of work. Hefty price tag. I bought them lunch so they could get started and finish before it got dark. 2 hours later they were done and off to the next job, apparently quicker then they had initially thought but for the same price. read more

Never did actually use their service. My wife made an appointment with Greg (the owner) to come out and give us an estimate. She had someplace to be at the appointed time and asked me to stay at home and wait for him. About 15 minutes into the appointment time he still had not arrived, so I called and left a message on his cell phone. He finally called me 30 minutes after that to tell me he would be able to get there in "about 30-45 minutes". I stated since I had already been waiting for him 45 minutes past his appointment time I will be here waiting. He made no attempt. To apologize for the late appointment and no explanation for not calling with an update when he was going to be late. I decided that since he was not reliable for a first appointment to simply give an estimate for service he could not be reliable for actually providing the service. I cancelled the appointment. Perhaps he does provide good tree service. I just can't have someone work for me who I can trust to keep his word. read more

I called three tree services for estimates. Budget was the only one to respond on the first call. A second company respond after a second call, the third never responded. Greg was very personable and appeared to know his business (although I know next to nothing about trees). He provided me with his certifications and proof of insurances without me even asking. His bid was 25% below the other company that submitted a bid. The crew did arrive an hour later than was planned, but they went right to work and the job was completed exactly as promised. This was not a small job, it involved removing two large palms and two medium sized trees as well as significant trimming to three other 40ft tall trees and two smaller trees. The crew was friendly and took their work very seriously. I was very pleased with this company and plan to use them again on other work I have planned. read more

I Have 5 Birch trees in my from yard that have died this year and need them removed and stump grinned. I have had 3 or 4 different folks out and they were all within $100 of each other since it is fairly straight forward and the trees are not that big I called Budget after seeing their ad in the monthly Breeze advertising we get delivered. I received a recording which stated Greg would call back in half an hour. I left a message and he did call back later that day. Was polite and scheduled an appointment for the next day. He called about two hours after the set time, apologized saying he get caught up in another city on a big job. He was again very polite and we re scheduled for the following Monday. Again I received a call, this time from Bud I believe his name was (not Greg the owner) and said he couldn't make it before 4PM when I had to leave but did come Wednesday morning. He looked at the trees and quoted me $400 per tree x 5 trees for $2,000. That is 4 times more, yes 4 times, than the other folks. Budget??? I don't think so. Greg the owner is very polite and I have no reason to doubt the quality of their work since I obviously did not use. Perhaps he just didn't want the job however if that is the case he should have said so. Will not be on my list to call for any other service nor will I recommend. Update: Now 4 months have past and I did receive a message from the owner. He apologized that he was unable to personally come out and give an estimate due to (he did explain) some very personal family issues he had to deal with and said if he had came out he would have given a much more reasonable estimate. I appreciate the feedback from him tho it is really very late in the game. read more
