Our beloved backyard walnut tree was attacked by wisteria, and unfortunately we didn't notice until many large branches had been killed. Sean came highly recommended by a local nursery we love, so we gave him a call. Sean gave us an honest assessment of the tree's health (likely fine, just in need of some cleanup) and gave us a very reasonable quote to remove the dead branches and do some light trimming. The work was done a few weeks later. They were quick, cleaned up throughly afterwards, and the tree looks great. Highly recommend Sean and Yolo County Arborist. read more

Yolo County Arborist - Walnut tree after trimming - Tree Services Near Me

Sean and his crew are extremely professional, careful, and thorough. We hired them several years ago to care for a yard full of trees which had not been managed in decades. They did an excellent job and we had them back to do maintenance on the trees that were left this year. Not only is this team extremely knowledgeable about tree types, diseases, pruning timing, etc, but they also are meticulous in all aspects of the job. For example, they are careful when up in the air and use all the safety equipment necessary to make sure no one gets hurt. They also took care around our garden plants and irrigation system and tidied the area of sticks when they left. I definitely recommend these guys! read more

Yolo County Arborist is the best! Sean and his partner tackled two very overgrown golden honey locust trees that were planted between houses on a difficult access and obstacle laden terrain. Terrific job and such a reasonable pricing. Thank you, Sean. read more

I live off a one lane very rural road. Got off work working graveyard and found our road blocked. Sean said it would be 1-2hr before I could get home. Mind you we had no notice or I would have planned to go into woodland which is 35 miles from home. I have animals go feed and let out. I know they have a job to do but to give no notice is very disrespectful and unprofessional. read more

Sean and his crew have come to our house twice in the last few years to remove privets and clean up some other trees, including a monstrous mulberry. They do excellent work, leave the job site clean, and are always courteous. Sean knows trees and what they need to thrive. When he comes to provide an estimate, he walks through his recommendations and the work entailed. Big recommendation! read more

Yolo County Arborist - Freshly maintained mulberry tree. - Tree Services Near Me

After several years of good work, we had an extremely unsatisfactory experience this year. First, there was a lack of communication over the start date, resulting in a two week delay. We had a landscaper that was supposed to start on September 2nd, but we had to push them back a week to get the tree work done before demolition of the driveway and other hardscaping. Sean and his crew showed up on time, and worked for two days pruning several trees and removing a palm. When they cleaned up and started to pack up, I reminded them that the scope of work included grinding the stump. Sean said that they would need to come back because their stump grinder was broken. I told him that wasn't possible because the landscaper was going to start in a few days and there would not be access. Well, he either didn't listen to me, or decided to ignore me. His worker tried to come back with a stump grinder the next week, and was irritated when the landscaper told him no. He was rude to the crew and left. Two weeks later, when the new concrete driveway was only one week old, the guy returned without my knowledge or permission. He removed the driveway barriers we had put up and drove a 1,500 pound machine across my new driveway. (You are supposed to avoid anything heavier than 300 pounds for 4 weeks.) When I heard the sound, I ran outside and tried to stop him, gesturing with all the usual hand signs to stop. He looked at me, turned around and continued to grind. I finally got him to turn off the machine, but by this time I was furious and yelled with such language, a sailor would blush. I called Sean and laid into him as well. The worker then tried to drive back over the driveway, but I blocked the machine with my body. I thought at one point that he would try to drive past me, or knock me down. Sean finally arrived, and by this point I was beyond furious. He told me I was overreacting. Ha! Don't ever tell a woman she is overreacting. Facing these two arrogant men, who didn't listen to me the first time, and then tried to dismiss my valid concern that they may have damaged the cement, I let loose millennia of frustrations of men ignoring women. The only way they could remove the behemoth was to remove a section of fence and drive it across a short section of yard to our neighbor's driveway, which they graciously allowed. The epilogue to this tale is that I discovered that they had cut many smaller branches high up in my Chinese elms, but didn't remove them. I now have dozens of small brown branches that sometimes fall in a high wind. They should come back and fix this, but there is no way I will ever let this un professional company back in my yard. read more

I have used Yolo County Arborist twice, and each time they did a fantastic job. They handled all of the trees on the property, and hauled all of the debris away, quickly and efficiently. The price was great as well. Definitely high value. I recommend them and will use them again when my trees get too straggly again. read more

They broke one of the lights and did not even mention about it and just left. They replaced with a new one saying "it was cheap." Very rude. read more

We've used Yolo County Arborist for many years and Sean has always done a great job with our trees, both at our home and at a house that we rent out. We just recently hired Sean again to remove one tree, and trim three others - two large oaks and a pear. The trees look great - Sean is attentive and does careful trimming. His crew members are polite and did a good job cleaning everything up, and our neighbors expressed their appreciation. Sean and his crew also took care to protect a dwarf lemon tree and a few rose bushes. We trust Sean's expertise about tree care and won't hesitate to hire him again. read more

They removed a few very high and heavy branches off an oak tree, excellent work. A certified arborist and with great equipment, including a large cherry picker that goes high. I'd hire them again without hesitation. read more

Our issue with Yolo County Arborists (YCA) was the lack of communication and unprofessional interaction with their Job Foreman. My in-laws recently passed away and we have to travel to Davis CA. to settle things. We just happened to be at the home, when we were awakened to the sound of chain saws. The neighbor ordered work on a large tree that sits directly on the property line and there is a back story about this tree as well as a fence. Neither YCA or the neighbor contacted us to explain what they were doing or to ask permission to access to our property. The foreman was interjecting himself into our dispute with the neighbor and he was repeatedly interrupting me as I was trying to explain our concerns. At the end of the conversation, the foreman says he sees I am shaking and then proceeds to tell me I need to learn to calm down and that I "...should stop eating sugar". I told him he has no idea what people are going through and he shouldn't be telling people what to do. The foreman walked away throwing f-bombs at me and calling me an f-ing a-hole. I called Sean to expressed my concerns. While he appeared somewhat receptive and took personal responsibility for accessing our property without permission, he also made comments suggesting the altercation with his foreman was my fault. He offered to talk to me in person which I said wasn't necessary, but I also told him I expected him to discuss the unprofessional behavior with his foreman. Based on this conversation, I doubt there will be any meaningful reprimand for the foreman's behavior. read more

He came out. Gave me a written estimate. I hired him and he said it'd be in Late August to Sept. I called him in Sept and he was camping. He never contacted me thereafter. I won't try again. I suggest an alternate business. read more

Had an appointment for an estimate. Sean was a no show. Recalled and again, received no response. However, I then contacted Gastelum Tree & Landscape and Blue Oak Tree Service, both were most responsive. Give them a try. read more

Showed up for a quote and scheduled an appointment to trim some trees. Then failed to show up to trim the trees. Rescheduled for when we were away, which was fine, and called to offer us some free cypress mulch without going into greater detail. We assumed he would be offering us a reasonable amount of mulch and said "sure!" without further questioning. Returned home to find a 6 ft tall pile of cypress shreddings on our front yard that easily would have filled dozens and dozens of bags. Used some and tried to give the rest away with limited results. We called after two weeks and asked that he come pick the rest up. After much protesting he agreed to, but then, again, never showed up. Certainly we should have inquired more about the mulch when offered. Maybe something like, "hey, how many hundreds of pounds of mulch will you be dumping?" but our poor communication aside he consistently failed to follow through. His trimming work appears to be fine and the price was pretty much average what we were quoted from others so one extra star for that. That said, there are plenty of other arborists in the area. Choose one that's more reliable. Update: he has since contacted us and apologized. Reportedly he came by to pick up the excess mulch, but it was already gone. We, of course, were not aware. For whatever that's all worth. read more

We contacted Sean because he had a pretty good recommendation level on NextDoor. He did what in his mind is a good job for the amount paid. He wasn't very good at responding to texts though he asked me to use text. My ideas and his about the job were not aligned. Expectations were not well managed :). I say this because in the past, one guy did all the work for a similar amount and was nearly perfect. When I saw him arrive with a team, I had a feeling things would not be as good as I had hoped. Positive: quick, efficient, good cleanup, did the big picture work. Negative: The approach was cutting rapidly to "the big picture" without attention to detail. e.g. overlapping branches were not fixed; dead wood was not removed; inner shaping of fruit trees was not done. One shrubby tree was not cut back to where we discussed. One tree was not as shortened as much as I had hoped. read more

Sean came highly recommended by my friends who use him. He and his team were on time, efficient, skilled, and friendly and took special care to not damage our neighbor's new driveway lying under the tree canopy. They left the job site super clean too. read more

Sean is hands down the best arborist I have worked with and seems like a really nice guy. I needed a hackberry that dripped sap removed. After getting several bids, Sean's came in the most affordable by a wide amount! As soon as I heard that price, I asked him about a couple other things in my yard and he gave me extremely reasonable rates for them too. One was a tree I asked him to remove due to PG&E mutilating it yearly to keep power lines safe. Sean was not only able to save the tree, denying himself more work and money, but it was cut in a way that it now has the nice natural shape that an oak should have, while maintaining a lot of shade. He came with a good sized crew who coordinated well with each other and with me. I was amazed at how quickly and professionally they were able to complete the work. I think this is definitely a case of Sean being able to bid less money than others because he is able to get the job done by working smarter not harder. For context: I have had two other arborists work on this property and I grew up on acreage where we did most of our tree work ourselves. read more

We've been happy customers of Yolo County Arborist for more than 5 years and have recommended Sean's services to friends. Sean is a certified arborist and has been in business for 10 years. He is knowledgeable on the growth habit of trees and how best to maintain their health. He listens to the needs and concerns of the homeowners and provide honest advice and recommendations. The whole crew is courteous, efficient, and hard working. Even though Yolo County is in the company name, Sean does work in Sacramento County. After they finished their work, my front yard looks cleaner than when they started! Don't mess with people who just learned to use a chain saw and don't have a clue how to properly trim a tree. Give Sean a call for an consultation! read more

I did my research before hiring Sean and his crew. I had four different companies come provide estimates and went with Yolo County Arborist. Sean is no nonsense and tell you like it is when it comes to cutting down trees. One thing I really liked is that since he was already coming to cut down a huge Walnut tree he gave me a discounted price in regards to cutting down a large fig tree and cherry tree I also needed cutting down. His crew arrive the day before to set up and the day off was in and out by mid-day. His crew also very nicely moved my daughter's play structure out of the way and moved it back too. I highly suggest Sean. He will not chat you up, but he will get the work done efficiently and is honest about what him and his team delivers. read more

Previously had them thin out trees and remove one. Decent work and fair price. Contacted them again, received estimate, and was told they would get back to me soon but had a few projects. Almost two months later called and was told would be out the next week. The day they were to arrive was the big storm. I called and left a message to confirm they were scheduled to come out that day, for I had one downed tree. Never heard back from them and it's been a week. I got most of the tree out and ready for pick up. I'm still trying to deal with the stump. read more

We had 10 difficult-to-reach trees of varying sizes pruned extensively. I had no idea how great the trees in our yard could look! People driving by over the last few weeks have stopped to comment on their beautiful shapes. Sean led me thru the process gently but firmly and was absolutely right about each and every recommendation. Transformation was worth every single penny of a very reasonable cost! Sean & crew worked around our difficult schedule, cleaned up completely, and were friendly and courteous and communicated well about options & process. read more

Sean was extremely professional when assessing the work and getting us a quote. His crews were heavily scheduled, a good sign, so we were prepared to wait a month or two. However, as soon as Sean saw a break in his schedule, he contacted us, and they got the job done in a few hours. They did great work, including all the clean up. Highly recommended. read more

Impressive service and competitive pricing. I was very pleased with their work to remove four diseased flowering pear trees with dangerous limbs. Thank you, Sean and team. I needed to have a branch cut off as it crushed the rain gutter. Sean and his crew were on time and managed to cut the branch quickly. Since they were there, they also cut down a dead tree in front of my house at a discount. Then they chipped and spread the chips in the front yard. His price was reasonable and I am totally happy with the job. I had contacted 4 different companies during a very busy time; 1 promised to give me an estimate then promptly ignored me and the other 2 failed to respond to my request. I also had a quote from some who cut trees on the side and promised a good deal (he was really expensive). Sean even slotted me in earlier, when I told him I was having gutter work done. I'm happy this job was done right and the way I wanted it. Highly recommend him and his crew read more

Needed several tall birches removed in my backyard. Access was a little cramped and they needed to climb the trees to remove them. The crew was very professional, came on-time, finished on-time, did the job without materially damaging anything, and cleaned up pretty thoroughly, including removing all the debris. And a fair price too. Fully licensed and insured. They are quite busy so some times can be difficult to get ahold of. Recommended. read more

Sean and his crew did a great job! We had a lot of never before maintained trees that were a mess. Not only do our trees look great, but they did an awesome job of cleaning up everything when they were done. I highly, highly recommend these guys! read more

Sean's crew was lackluster at best. When you're asked to remove a tree, you'd think you'd take the entire root structure out. This should be standard procedure. We're disappointed in his lack of communication as well. We even left a text message essentially firing him and he blew if off and did the work anyways. I wouldn't trust this guy or his crew to work on your property ever. read more

Sean Cookman, the Yolo County Arborist. He's no-nonsense, courteous, friendly, and his crew is top notch. There's many ways to skin a tree, but Sean knows how to optimize the customer experience. After interviewing 3 recommended arborists on our local blog, I had bids from only bonded and insured contractors. After being yanked around by another who promised a lot, and delivered nothing, I called Sean. Even in the busy season, with a rash of tree business, Sean was here within a week, and had a large tree gone and cleaned up in 3 hours. Knowledgeable, friendly, and the man knows his stuff. Not only is the tree gone, all the plantings underneath it are in tact, with just a little sawdusting. His price is very competitive, but when the chips are down, he's the guy you want on the crew. Thanks, Sean, and all your guys. Literally awesome. read more

Sean listened to what our thoughts were and brought his talent to prune our trees. I've watched these trees grow for 25 years and have done many prunings myself when they were young. Now they are growing into each other, our house and hover over our yard. Sean really figured out how to balance and shape all he worked on. This was way beyond my expectation and made the other company I hired a few years ago look like beginners. read more
