Wine by the glass is very expensive. They don't tell you the size of the glass or the amount of wine you are getting. I expected to get an average glass of wine like I would get in a restaurant for $8.00. They only fill a small wine glass about 2/3 full at $8.00 per glass. Very pricey for what I thought was less than 4 oz of wine. Other area wineries are not this expensive. Very good wine but I can get good wines at the nearby competitors. I haven't been there in quite a long time but do not plan to go back. 3 stars for excellent wine. Minus 2 stars for deceptive menu and high pricing. What a great day it was celebrating my birthday. Our first stop was Montezuma Winery. I haven't been in years so when we went we saw they added a new addition of their tasting room. But it wasn't open yet but one of the worked said pretty soon. I thought the mimosa flight was delicious and great pairing of their wine. It was a great portion. The service was the great as well. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly. The tasting came with small piece of fudge sample and Cheeky Monkey(tomato oil dipping sauce, my favorite) and crackers. I can't wait to head back once the tasting room is open. read more

Not your typical winery! =) Wow, I want to say that we have been getting Montezuma wines for over 15 maybe 20 years! Currently I believe that they have three locations, & we have been to all three. If you want to taste test good wine, that runs the whole spectrum, then stop off at Montezuma. If you are looking for the typical French style wine, then this may not be for you. But if you have an open mind & want to try new flavours, then give them a go. This would be their first location, where they also bottle all their wine & host their events. Now like all their locations, it is very touristy, but you can do tastings of what they have to offer as well as their yummy wines. read more

Visiting the finger lakes region and there are over a hundred wineries in the area. This one drew us in with the promise of wine slushies. We did get a couple red to go and they were delicious. We did a wine flight. Choose 4 wines and came with a small cube of fudge, a bag of Tostitos chips and a little container of salsa. 15. The wines we chose were. Blue moon. A blueberry wine. Pass Peach wine. Pass Fat frog red and fat frog red bubbly were very good. The bubbly was amazing. Bought two bottles to bring home. Pintail. A rhubarb whine. Yes. Rhubarb not sour just delicious. Two bottles to take home ( also a package of wine gummies) Red camp. Light n fruity not bad Another dry red wine that was too dry for us. read more

I've driven by - and stopped at - Montezuma Winery a number of times over the years (starting years ago with my drives back and forth from college). I originally visited because I was taking wine tasting courses in college, and then I continued to visit now and then because I enjoy the novelty of their fruit wine options - and, of course, honey wine (mead). In the last 5 years or so though, I drink far less wine (migraines). I just recently stopped by again the other day, and noticed they were extending the building - seems like they're building a new tasting room. This is definitely beneficial, as their current tasting room is quite crowded with various display tables and shelves selling souvenir items. I'm sure there are people that enjoy checking out all the tchotchkes... but personally? I find it to be far too cluttered. :-/ I've also had real "hit or miss" experiences with the sales staff over the years. For example, I recently had a salesman approach me (while I was checking out the Hidden Marsh Distillery selections) and ask if I had any questions. Out of curiosity, I asked him if he had any recommendations from the distillery options, and he looked very surprised... then just answered "Oh, uh... I'm more of a wine drinker." I mean... that's fine... but I'm in the section full of products from the distillery. Why offer to help if you're not at least a little understanding of the products I'm looking at? TL;DR Years and years ago, Montezuma Winery felt like one of the only options for fruit or honey wines. With the local wine industry growing so much though, Montezuma's previous niche in the market is less significant. The new building will house the new tasting rooms in the Spring for the wines and spirits. Still working on a few details for the location of the shopping area and we are looking forward to seeing it when completed. Wine selections have expanded over the years and there is much more for the drier wine drinkers. There are also now spirit slushies! We tried a few and they are very tasty. Everyone is always helpful and friendly making for an enjoyable and relaxing tasting. There are so many unique items in the store we always plan on at least an hour to browse. Loved this stop. It was our first stop on the lake on our journey on a different lake in the finger lakes. We made a pack that we were going to visit the area every 6 months. We love the area and wanted to try the area out in the colder months. What I loved about this place they had wine and whiskey. I was torn apart between the two and didn't know what to try. The guy who introduced the wine and whiskey to us was brilliant. He knew the wines and whiskey's inside and out and provided one of the best demo for the spirits. I enjoyed the wine and whiskey. The sandhill red was our favorite that we both agreed upon. It was an off-dry but a great taste and hit the spot. It's served better chilled. In addition, I purchased a maple bourbon whiskey that was splendid as well. They had many options here to pick from. They were doing some construction on what I'd assume would be a tasting area. Not any room that I could tell on a place to sit and have a glass or bottle of wine at the moment except for outside and it's code, so that's not happening. Highly recommend visiting this place. We have passed this place so many times on our travels through the FLX region. We were able to stop this time and we enjoyed a wine flight tasting as a stop on our latest road trip. We were thrilled that it was dog friendly outside, where there was a lot of seating and a grassy lot next to the facility. We were told the flight option was brand new. For $15 you got to choose 4 wines, which came as generous pours. They were cleverly brought out, labeled by number, in a cupcake tin with a fudge sample and some of their tomato olive oil and Tostitos. There were a ton of wines to choose from and something for every palette. We enjoyed most of the tastings and bought a bottle of Blanc de blancs. They are smart to give a fudge sample because it's hard to just have a taste. read more

My wife and I have been long time supporters of Montezuma Winery. Shortly after they opened their new tasting room, my wife and I went in and waited by the wine slushie machine for 10 minutes to place an order. There was only 1 person working the whole room and we were never acknowledged by anyone, so we left. We stopped by again today, 7/10, around 1 pm and stood right in front of the sign that says place your slushie and food orders here. There were 3 people working the busy room and again we waited 10 minutes, no one acknowledged us or said they would be with us shortly or anything. Again, we left . Half of the new tasting room is full of cheap souvenirs and has nothing to do with wine and service is poor. Burned twice now, we will not go back. Very disappointed. There are many more wineries in the area with much better service and prices. read more

Montezuma Winery was one of two wineries I had earmarked for our trip because I've been a fan since I first tried their wines at an event in Buffalo. I had to pick up the sweet mead and Blue Moon blueberry wine because our local liquor stores only seem to carry their Red Frog wine (which is good, too). They aren't currently offering tastings like other wineries at the moment, but you can pick up a tasting kit to go, which I thought was a clever idea. I bought a Bubbly kit. It included five wine samples, crackers, chocolate fudge, and a wine glass for $9 (with a $3 coupon). Everything was carefully packaged, but for whatever reason some of the Bubbly still escapes. No biggie. I still enjoyed my tasting. I think Pink Swan was my favorite. While I only visited one other winery, I drove by plenty this past weekend and I don't think any was as busy as Montezuma, even without tastings. Great service. read more

Visited here largely for the HIdden Marsh Distillery, as we'd visited plenty of places selling sweet/fruity wine. Tastings were limited to three items per customer, with reasonably generous enough pours to allow two to share. The apple brandy was decent, but not great. The maple liqueur was interesting (and warranted a purchase). The bourbon was just hot. The person pouring for us was friendly but distracted, and didn't wash out the glass between those very different products. For all that there's wine and liquor scattered around the store, the quantity of other tchotchkes, kitsch, fudge, etc., made it feel like a tourist souvenir shop, rather than a wine and spirits maker. Great place to visit if you are in Cayuga Lake. Due to COVID, this winery preps a bag with 5 samples of wines, popcorns, fudge, water bottle, & a wine glass for $12. I also decided to purchase wine slushies for $7 and I have to say it was the best wine slushies I ever had! If I were to go again, I would stick sigh getting sweet red wines vs. sweet white wines but if you like dry & sweet wines, white wines are good for that! My favorite wine was Fat Frog Bubbly (sweet red wine), so yummy! Plenty of outdoor seating and it's definitely more than 6ft social distance, loved it! I would recommend the place to clean the outdoor tables after each session, it was pretty dirty with a lot wine spills. Also, since the winery is small, I would recommend to limit the people that are in the winery.. felt way too crowded during COVID. read more

This place was great. We stopped because they explicitly put on their website all of the ways that they are taking precautions due to Covid. They are offering a really neat idea of a take out flight of wines which allows you to have the wine tasting experience from the comfort of your home. Included is a wine glass and lots of tasty treats too. The staff was great and really eager to help and allowed us to browse the store for a couple bottles of wine too. This was our last (winery number 13) stop on a dreary, damp Saturday that was part of the Bacon on the Lake-in wine tour promo on Cayuga Lake. Since this was more about the bacon infused dishes than the wine - I will comment on the bacon dish served here. Montezuma's served a dessert pizza with bacon baked in and lots of sugary goodness topped by a maple bourbon liquor that they produce here. One of the wines they served was made with Concord grapes - I thought most Finger Lakes wineries left those in the past but not here... and yes it did taste like Welch's grape juice... Being at the intersection of two busy roads this winery does not have much in the way of a nice lake location compared to the others we visited on this tour. This was the first year that the Cayuga Lakes Wine Trail did this bacon event but given they sold 1500 tickets I'm guessing they'll do it again next year - we really enjoyed it. read more

I wanted to stop by Montezuma on our way to Buffalo as it looked like they had a number of wines I would have loved to try! When we got there a gentleman was handling our tasting, forgot his name, but he was patient and extremely helpful with us in picking out something we would love. They let us choose 6 wines while also having one picked out for us to try. We had to be strategic in our choices since there were so many I could have tried - wish we could have tried more! I had looked at ones I was interested in trying before we got there, some of them were not available at the time, so it would be nice if they kept their website updated on the seasonal changes. I do not remember all that we tried, but we had to limit ourselves on what we could buy and bring back with us since we were traveling, and wine does get heavy/fragile in a suitcase! We got the following wines: -Cranberry bog - my husband loved this one, I think it is good, but you really have to like cranberry as you get a lot of it in this wine! -Diamond - we both loved this one, great for the sweet wine drinkers and one of their most popular -Apple Cider - this tastes like apple cider, just a nice fall wine! -Fat Frog Iced - one of their sweetest wines - love, love, loved this one! I can see myself ordering from them in the future since we do not live in the area, as they had some great wines! Some of course we did not care for, but it was hard to find a wine that we actually hated or could not finish the glass. Well done Montezuma! read more

Ah Montezuma the gem at the top of Cayuga Lake! I have been visiting this winery for years and I'm finally taking the opportunity to write all about them! I love their wine, they've got a ton of different options from dry to sweet, fruit wine, and even mead! Tastings are 6 samples plus a featured wine for only five dollars and you can take home a souvenir glass for an additional two! I love the winery itself, they've got an entire store full of fun items for gifts or decoration and they have a really nice tasting bar. Staff are always very friendly, attentive, and you can tell they have a passion for their wine and all of the different products that they have. Wine prices are great and the location right at the top of Cayuga lake and maybe ten minutes from the 90 makes this stop a must do. Truly a treasure on the Cayuga Wine Trail! We had a flight of dry whites and reds and sadly did not like any of them. Most were extremely light and (honestly) tasted quite watery. Maybe the sweeter wines are ok, we did not try any of them as we simply don't drink sweet wines. The staff was nice and clearly knew their products, so no complaints there. read more

We have passed this winery before and so glad we stopped this time. You need to know that it is just not a winery but a distillery as well. So of course we each had to try a libration. It was pretty crowded at 11 in the morning. But we found a spot. We did a wine tasting along with one tasting of bourbon (hubby) and orchard vodka (me). They had some really good wines. If you like the sweet stuff, this place should be on your list - they have a pretty expansive wine list, so I wish I could've tried more of them, but you get to try 6 for $4, which is pretty good. I wasn't impressed with their ice wine - it tasted kind of off. I *was* very impressed with their mead, though, both the semisweet and the sweeter one (which is a very good price, only $13 a bottle right now). They also had a rhubarb "dessert" wine, which was pretty enjoyable, though it was a bit tart to be a proper dessert wine - still fun though. If you like good spirits, you should also especially come here for the Hidden Marsh vodkas. Definitely one of my favorite vodkas - it's gorgeously smooth, and while it isn't sweet, it does have the tiniest whisp of honey, especially in the nose. They also made a pepper-infused vodka, which the menu describes as spicy, but it really isn't - it does, however, capture the smoky and peppery essence of a good chili pepper, just without much kick (that one was also on sale for super cheap when I was there a couple weeks ago, which was nice.) I also tried their maple liqueur (basically the vodka diluted with real maple syrup), which was *intensely* sweet, but also super tasty. It's not a particularly pretty tasting room - felt pretty large and corporate - but they were quick enough at getting us tasting, and the wine and spirits were both great. But it isn't a place you'd stop for a picnic, say. read more

We had to make room in the car for two cases! I had tried some of their selection at the Spencerport Canal Days Festival, but this was incredibly helpful and tried choices I didn't even know about! First time doing Cayuga Lake area wineries as usually frequent Seneca Lake. Preference is dry/semi-dry Chardonnay or Rieslings, and full bodied reds, so when I walked in and immediately got the "mass market retail"feel of the place, including children sprawled all over the floor playing video games as parents tasted, my expectations hit bottom. I was, unfortunately, correct to not except much. For $10 you choose 6 & each pour barely wets your mouth, which is not all bad since their wines are meh/barely drinkable (but not terrible) --unremarkable in every sense. For for what you get "taste" wise the so-called tasting should be free. Left there with a sweet apple wine for $14 (at least twice what it's worth) for my 84 year old mom who typically drinks boxed Moscato--yikes! read more

I suspect a lot of Montezuma Winery's business comes from the fact that it is the northernmost Cayuga Lake winery, and a logical starting point if you are coming from anyplace to the north. It is also the closest of those wineries to the Thruway. Though as such, I would have expected Montezuma to do more in the "Welcome to Cayuga Lake Wineries" area (I got a lot more of that at Swedish Hill). Still, Montezuma has a very wide variety of products, alcoholic and otherwise. For me, since so many wineries in the area have similar wines, what I looked for at Montezuma were wines more unique. That included their honey products such as meads, and their fruit wines. They even have a fantastic rhubarb wine! Because it was a slower time of the day, we had an opportunity to chat more about the wines and meads with the woman guiding us through our tastings. And most important, how can you not love a place where you are greeted by a yellow lab reclining near the doorway demanding a belly-rub? read more

Montezuma is not doing traditional wine tasting these days but is offering a rather cool wine tasting kit with wine samples, crackers, chocolate fudge and a nice wine glass for keepsake. I really liked this idea of getting a wine kit to go and enjoying it on the lawn tables outdoors. Seemed much safer than how some of the other wineries were conducting their tasting. Also, the wines were really good and the staff was pretty quick with putting together the wine kits. I would love to return to this winery next time I'm in the area. read more
