I didn't read the reviews before we went in this weekend and I'm really glad I hadn't because I do rely on reviews. We needed a bike for our 4 1/2 year old little boy. As soon as I saw the "real" bikes, I asked right away if maybe they were too serious for what we were shopping for- "No, no, not at all," then totally made an effort to connect with Miles, measured his height, and showed us the bikes. He even offered up the used one they had in stock which was really nice. They made a special effort to make sure we had everything we needed and even helped load it in the car. He loves his new bike- training wheels, and shiny new bell. Yay local business!! We will go back for sure. read more

I broke a spoke on my bike this weekend. I took my bike to the bikery on a recommendation from my brother in-law. I am new to cycling and have no idea what I am doing when it comes to fixing anything on the bike. When I arrived at the service department I was greeted right away and they fixed the spoke right away. I was intending to leaving my bike here for at least a day. I also had some sifting issues that were also addressed on the spot cause they were very minor. I am so impressed with the service I will be definitely be going back next time. Great store. Decided to buy a road bike after not riding for several years. Tami was very helpful explaining the differences between the bikes, gear and setting up a few bikes for test rides. I decided to purchase a Specialized Sectuer Sport. Was fitted, set up with new pedals, shoes and gear. Took the bike home and went for my first of many enjoyable rides. I use to really like this place. Honestly, I like the guys that work on the bikes in the shop. Other then that, I would rather drive the extra 20-30 minutes to Cycle Craft, even if it is just to get a set of cleats or something small. One of the workers that works on the floor was rude, condescending and made my shopping experience very unpleasant. I agree with many of the low reviews here of this place. I was trying to browse the place and take my time but I felt like I was being rushed out of the store. The worker(s) just watch you shop, and it makes people uncomfortable (I am not the only person who experienced this). I am never shopping here again, they lost my business. I have been meaning to write a review here for a long time. IMO many of the negative reviews here are long outdated. I've been a local resident for 30+ years. While the Bikery name has stayed the same, the place, it's personality, and service levels have not. There was a time several years ago when I would no longer step into the shop - that has all changed for the better. In the last few years I purchased two bikes from the shop. Both were very positive buying experiences. The repair shop has treated me and friends fairly and honestly. My personal experience with Dave (the present owner) is that he has gone above my expectations to provide a quality buying and, along with Javier, the service manager, a quality level of service. There are a lot of good shops in the area but I will continue to first check out the Bikery for product and service. read more

Was here yesterday and purchased my wife's first specialized trail bike, comming from Bayonne, NJ. This is a small business unit and I must say, the staff is nowhere near attentative of consumers in the shop. You really have to call for their attention in order to receive sub par customer service. Luckily my wife already us knows what she want and just went straight buy. The owner should really look into this and address the customer service issue. Otherwise, the 3 star is for the pricing and the shop looks fantastic. read more

Purchased a bike there recently. The staff was friendly and very knowledgeable. They took their time to explain the best type of bike for the overall road type that we were going to be riding on. The quality of bikes there were great. If you want just a bike, you would fare better at one of the retail chan stores. However, if you're looking for a better quality bike, that has matched components, high qualily machining of the frames, then this is the place to go! read more

I have to agree with the other reviewers regarding the people upstairs (sales floor). The lady on the sales floor made me wait to be rung for so long doing whatever she was doing walking all over the place when there was no other customer in the store except me. I could have walked out the store with all the Gu on the counter. Another guy made me look like I didn't know the difference between an inner tube and a tire. I just looked at him with the "are you f'n kidding me??" look and went back downstairs (repair shop) where my bike was being serviced. I have never been upstairs since. I give the people upstairs 1 star. The 4 stars I'm giving goes to Ken and Javier downstairs. No BS people. Always got a smile on their faces and know what they are doing and good at it. Service is not cheap here but you always get the excellent service/repair that you paid for. read more

Apparently YELP isn't very useful since these businesses can have negative reviews removed. This is my 5th review. The other four were removed! This is the worst bike shop I've ever delt with in my entire life. I wish I knew of this before spending way too much money at this store. Apparently I couldn't have known better as they pay YELP to remove negative reviews so I can't say, I wish I looked here first. These people know nothing about assembling high end bikes and they know nothing of Di2. These folks think Di2 is a droid character in Star Wars. On top of that they are very ill mannered and they will charge you well over what they claim the service will cost. These people will treat anyone who comes into their shop like a "Fred". That means if you don't exude the look of a crit racer, get ready to be treated like garbage. You may even hear Dave talk negatively about other customers while your there. I once even heard him tell the mechanic not to trim a fork with a saw and instead use bolt cutter! I pity the person who's bike that belonged to as that is not the way to do things. Due to my extremely negative experience here I taught myself how to work on my own bikes and I'm at least better off for that. Unfortunately most folks aren't as hands on as I and just want a turn key bike. Do yourself a favor and find a different bike shop for your high end bike needs or any bike needs for that matter. There's plenty of good bike shops in NJ, just use your search engine. read more

They were able to get exactly the items I was looking for, and have a good inventory, or are willing to order exactly what you need. I'm surprised at the negative reviews for this shop - not only does the shop have a female assistant manager, but they have an experienced service department that even sends their mechanics to get training! The Bikery is the best place for Roadies in Montclair. Period. Dave, the owner, and the entire staff enthusiastically share their love of riding and are also always happy to take the time to help customers get all the information they need to make the right decision on a new bike. And for me, the thing that most distinguishes the Bikery from the other shops in town is that Dave fosters community by organizing and running weekly group rides at all levels, giving home to the Montclair Cyclists Road Riding Club, Organizing the Annual Turkey Ride to feed families in need, and through sponsoring Adult and Jr. Road Racing teams, each of which have produced multiple State Champions. These days, you can buy so many things online to save a couple of bucks, but there is no substiture for a locally-owned business that supports the very community in which it operates. read more

Having taken spin classes for almost a year, I decided it's about time I actually get some fresh air and start cycling. My current bike - which i've had for about 13 years - is extremely heavy and quite frankly out date (although I've had it for 13 years, the bike is about 20 years old). I went to Montclair Bikery excited to talk to someone about getting a new bike and learning what my options are. Although the store was fairly empty, it took longer than it should have for someone to greet me or ask if what I was looking for. I honestly had to loudly complain to my friend who was with me that there was no one helping me before the staff acknowledged my existence. While they showed me a bike that would suit my needs, they honestly weren't very helpful. They weren't interested in fitting me, they never asked my height... Actually they didn't ask me very many questions at all. I wasn't confident in their recommendation, and by the time I left I wasn't excited about purchasing a bike. Today I visited Diamond Cycling, which is about (2) minutes away on Bloomfield Ave. While I am not yet prepared to write their review, the service was 10x better and I will likely be purchasing my bike from there (which is why I'm holding off on their review). I would describe Montclair Bikery's service and atmosphere as "chilly" at best. They honestly didn't seem interested in whether I purchased a bike or not. Interestingly, when I mentioned this to a friend, he agreed with me and had the same experience: "I've been in that store twice, years ago. Both times I said to myself, 'I'm never coming back here.' The only reason I did come back was to see if anything had changed. It hadn't." read more

Unfortunately, I did not have the same positive experience as Gary H. I went to Montclair Bikery because a friend who lives locally spoke highly of the shop. I had visited many bike shops and happened to be in Montclair one day. I went over and spoke with the manager who set me up with a road bike (my first). They weren't very interested in fitting me, even after I brought the bike back twice, and acted like I was a problem customer when I complained that it wasn't comfortable--and now (after visiting a very reputable bike shop) I realize why. Montclair Bikery sold me a $1000 bike that was too big--51 inches instead of 44. I had researched bikes but believed that the bike shop would fit me properly. After a frozen shoulder experience resulting from riding the bike less than 10 times, I finally found out that the frame was too large. I came near the end of the summer and maybe that bike had been sitting around all summer and they wanted to get rid of it. I would have still spent the money if they had ordered the proper size for me. But, they knew I was a novice and I believe they took advantage of me. I was so injured and spooked from that experience that it has taken me several years to get the courage to ride again. Now that I am armed with the right information regarding fit, I am about to purchase a bike that I hope to enjoy without injury (at least from the size of the frame). My only comment has to do with the young kid who was at the front desk when i walked in- i stood there for two minutes without him looking up to greet me- he was making himself coffee. I literally stared at him while he continued to pretend i wasn't there. Hello, if you re going to have kids work for you, you might want to train them to greet customers when they come in the door. I am an avid biker and though I heard for years that these guys were rude, l I went because their webpage had the bike I wanted to buy for my son for less than Jay's in Westfield where I normally go. The guy who helped me could not have been less helpful despite the fact that there was nobody else in the store. I was about to buy the bike when he told me it cost $20 nore than it was online. When I inquired about it and showed him the page on my phone he said "I don't know what to tell you. So, I bought my Specialized Tarmac a year ago at the Bikery. I love the bike and got a great fit. After riding it for a year, I noticed that my wheels were not operating properly as if the bearings were worn. But based on my use and only a year, that didn't make a lot of sense. Rather than take the easy way out and just replace the bearings, Anthony really listened to what I said and thought that it really didn't make sense that bearings on both wheels would go at the same time. He and Dave in service tried to work with the existing bearings which were fine until they were re-installed in the wheel. As it turned out, the wheels had a defect. Specialized replaced both wheels for me. I am confident that if I walked into any other bike store and bought a bike and then came back a year later, I would have been sold bearings and installation for each of the wheels and never have realized that the wheels were defective. They have definitely earned my business. I highly recommend you consider them for your next purchase. read more

I've been here several times in the last few weeks- to buy a helmet, fix a bike, and look at new bikes. I'm personally not a fan of fancy bike shops but here I am. There seem to be two separate sets of staff- the maintenance staff and the retail staff. Retail staff upstairs has been very helpful. Maintenance downstairs has been too although repairs are too expensive! the staff seemed to want to charge me less for repairs but couldn't do to their computer system. The manager downstairs seemed a little smug although the young kids they have working there were amazing! Sadly it cost more to fix my bike then to get a new one. its too bad they don't have more used options. Some people just want to get on the road and not spend a fortune on a bike. I might consider buying new here although again, I wish they had more sale or used options. read more

I walked I'm yesterday a little intimidated on what I was looking at. I haven't rode a bike in over 6years. I not sure if the woman that helped me look at bikes was the owner, but she made me feel very comfortable inside the store. Even while she went to assist another customer another younger teen came to help. I didn't buy a bike yesterday because I wanted to test ride one but didn't because I felt uncomfortable with my jeans and work shoes. But I'm stopping in the first thing tomorrow with my son to buy a bike for the both of us. read more

I have been going to this shop for a number of years, after trying other local shops, and in my opinion this is the best in the area. I have always found the staff and management to be extremely courteous and knowledgeable, both in sales as well as repairs. The selection of bikes and equipment is great and the attentiveness to service and making sure I'm satisfied with my repairs has always been consistent. I'm disappointed that the bike store that I live around the corner from, treated me so poorly last night. I have to say that I will not be back. It was overall unfriendly and unwelcoming. I'm an accomplished cyclist who is used to riding in groups - up until recently, I never had to go to bike stores for service as there was always someone around to do it for me. Now, I will be relying on my local bike store - but it won't be this one. I enjoy seeing young people having jobs but please have them be polite if they are working in your store as for the adult staff - shocking the poor and rude reception I received. I'm shocked, cyclists are usually very cool and own stores b/c they love the sport. I would have thought the staff would have been nicer considering that I did make a few purchases and I live locally. I like to go to places that appreciate my business and therefore, will not be back. read more
