Brookdale Cycles is HANDS DOWN THE BEST BIKE SHOP IN THE BLOOMFIELD/MONTCLAIR/ESSEX AREA! The service is what really stands out at this shop- sure you can go on the internet and find perhaps a "better" deal, cheaper maybe, but in the end- the owner Mark and his dad KNOW BIKES- and every new bike you buy has to be assembled, and after a month or so, needs to be ADJUSTED! So in the end- your "better" deal is NOT better. Mark and his dad are fantastic- his dad opened the shop in 1954, so Mark who currently holds it down full time was basically BORN there! They also sell USED & restored bikes! Real quality stuff, and they stand behind everything they sell. I bought my 2009 Dahon Speed P8 there, and must have sent at least a hundred people to his shop when they compliment my bike on the street. The repair service is really top notch, and that too he stands behind- if its not done to your liking, he will adjust it to make you happy- but really, every repair Ive had him do was done RIGHT AWAY and RIGHT THE FIRST TIME- a RARITY in bike repairs. He has great long standing relationship with his vendors, and if you dont see it in the shop, chances are he can get it, and FAST too. I can't say enough good things about Brookdale Cycles; Ive lived in the area for 7 years, tried that other shop in Montclair on Broad st, and yea, they are nice guys and gals, but cant compare to the 58 years of service these guys have provided the area. What the other guys will charge you more for at a 3-4 week wait, Brookdale will do cheaper and right away in most cases, same day, plus mark hires US vets which I really thought was cool, especially in this economy. So check these guys out- if you aren't nearby, I can promise you, its worth the trip. read more

Not really knowing what bikes costs on average, to include their parts and accessories, I couldn't adequately judge this place based on prices when I went shopping for my first road bike back in 2010. I did not end up buying my bike here because I didn't find one I liked. They only showed me two options. That said, the staff here is usually friendly and helpful. On one visit, they set me up with a pair of clips, cleats and replaced the battery on my bike's GPS for $92. Not unreasonable. On another visit, I went in to get the handlebar grips replaced and the guy who I think is the owner didn't even want to deal with it. He literally told me it would take too much time. So I brought it to Montclair Bikery and they did the whole job in 20 minutes. I did go back here more recently and got my pedals replaced and brakes adjusted. I went in with pedals already purchased, the whole job took 10 minutes and they only charged me $15. Again, not unreasonable. Overall, their prices are fair, but that one handlebar experience made me lose grip of a 4 star review. In any event, they also always seem busy, so they must have somewhat of a good reputation or a steady clientele considering the competition in the area. read more

Seems like folks are iffy on this place and that confirms how I felt. I've been here a few times and while I felt that the owner and staff were always super friendly and welcoming, they just never truly DELIVERED. I am a pretty active cyclist, but I'm not a pro by any means. I would say I'm a hobbyist: I know terms, various tools and products, physics surrounding cycling, and general knowledge of bicycle brands and models. Due to the pandemic, they've had issues with stock. So regular items or repair items you generally have to wait a little longer for them to receive delivery. Twice I went in looking for parts that I thought would be a no brainer... but no dice. My main complaint however: I brought my road bike in for new tires and full stem-to-spoke tune up. I had tubeless Gatorskins 24 on, and requested the exact same ones. Was told "no problem I have them on order to arrive tomorrow actually." Well, that wasn't the truth. They did put new tires on, but they are tube VERA 28s. Honestly, since I am in fact a hobbyist, I can get by with the tires until the next years' endurance rides, so I didn't raise a fuss. Also, they didn't quite clean my chain properly. I didn't think the service truly warranted the price. I would recommend them for those who are looking for their first bike, or as a quick tune up spot, or things like saddles, bike racks, etc. Always support your local shop if you can do so. I wish I read some of the other negative reviews before buying a Groupon for Brookdale cycle. To keep it short, I bought a Groupon and called several times and was told they were too busy to take my certificate for a tune-up. I called three times and each time they told me to wait 2-3 weeks. Months later, the Groupon is going to expire so I decided to go to the shop after they would not answer the phone. Once they were done arguing with another customer over the price quoted on a bike sale, the owner told me that they can't honor my voucher. I told them I would be willing to leave it and wait a while and they told me to they had too much "real business" and to contact Groupon to get my money back. Groupon will not give me my money back but instead "Groupon Bucks" to use for a future purchase. I fully understand they are very busy with spring tune-ups but they sold me a certificate and refused to honor it after leading me on that they would. The owner was rude and unapologetic; his solution to contact Groupon for a refund should have been suggested back in early March when I called to schedule the tune-up. read more

The owner of this bike shop is not to be trusted. I brought in my bicycle to Brookdale Cycle for a tune up, they told me that I needed new tires and tape on the handle bar, they gave me a vague quote of "$40 for this, $30 for that" and sent me off believing the total quote was approximately $70. Three days later when they called me to notify that the bike was ready, they told me that they decided to replace some other parts and now the final bill will be $250 - I was very surprised by this because I never agreed to this additional work. When I showed up to pick up the bicycle, the bill had grown to $270 (likely due to taxes). It was probably clear to them that I do not know much about bicycles, so they saw an opportunity to take advantage, by pressuring me into paying more than we agreed. When the owner saw that I was paying cash, he offered not to charge me taxes, as a sly way of closing this deal. I learned two lessons: First, always read the reviews online because I now see that others are saying this place is a bit of a hustle. The second lesson is, do not do business with Brookdale Cycle. read more

My Mongoose from Wal-Mart caused so much frustration in my life, including injuries from 3 crashes. I knew I needed to replace it asap so I can commute to New York from NJ without paying for Ubers. I found Brookdale Cycle a week and a half ago and stopped in last week to pick up a rack so I can use my Mongoose to deliver food in Hoboken and NYC on my off time. After my chain caused another set of injuries and damages worth the price of the bike itself, I began looking for a replacement. I browsed Craigslist, Facebook's Marketplace, Offerup, the chain stores and even called the shops in Jersey City and in the area surrounding Essex. After coming to Brookdale, they had exactly what I needed. Working with my budget, and providing me with a helmet, a rack and a great bike to commute and perform amazingly, I left there in comfort and satisfied that I made the right decision. A 6 month warranty, a great Mountain bike, 24 gears, large frame for my 6'1" height, and excellent tweeking on site to suit my needs. I'm sure I'm going to need more parts and services in the future, so I'll definitely be returning, and I highly recommend Brookdale Cycle for anyone who needs a respectable transaction, good service and a great product. I brought a bike frame in to be checked out and get an estimate to get it fixed up completely and a time to pick it. The two guys were friendly as was Mark the day I came to pick up my bike. I don't know a whole lot about bikes but I do know they're expensive and although I could've bought a cheaper one I think this was decent price to pay for a high quality bike to be restored. Mark even threw in new seat for another $10. The shop looks like any bike shop with various bikes accessories and parts. I can't really say this place is the best since there are other shops around, but the service was relatively fast and very friendly which accounts for a lot. I was told they have been in business since 1954 so they must be doing something right. read more

Well, I _thought_ I was getting a good deal here. When I got my bike back from its tuneup, the front derailleur wouldn't shift properly from 2nd into 3rd gear. I could live with that. But then the first time I added air to my rear tire, it went flat. I brought it back, they were willing to fix the flat for free and tweak my gears. Great. When I got the bike back again, the front derailleur was still a little balky, but now the rear didn't want to shift from 7th into 6th gear. Okay, I can still live with that. Then, today, as I was biking home, my rear axle slid out and almost dropped me on the ground with a lawsuit waiting to happen. What kind of professionals don't tighten a rear axle sufficiently after replacing a tire? That does it for me. There's a lot I will put up with as minor annoyances, but my safety comes first. read more

Just picked up my bike from Brookdale Cycle. Mark and his team were awesome! Just honest, trustworthy, very knowledgeable and super helpful! I needed a tune up for my road bike, which had definitely seen better days. I hadn't ridden it in almost two years and it had been moved across country. The movers had broken the shifter on the bike and messed up the chain and tires needed repair too. Mark called to communicate before any additional repairs / purchases were made to confirm I wanted them. He even recalibrated my speedometer and helped me attach my bike rack to my car (which another bike shop tried to charge me for), mark did it just as part of Brookdale's customer service! Fantastic service here. I have several bikes, the oldest was purchased in 1976. (If only I had my Schwynn Continental from 1963). Whenever anything goes wrong, they fix it in short order. Yesterday, on the way to work a spoke broke. In less than 100 feet, before figuring out what was going on, the spoke caused a flat and the wheel got out of balance. On Friday before Memorial Day weekend, the place was manned by the owner who had several customers, but he was able to have me taken care of within 20 minutes. Buyer beware of the Groupon tune-up bait and switch: I brought 2 bikes in for a basic tune-up which I had the Groupon for and after inspecting the bikes the owner told me I had to replace parts I had just replaced a year ago on one of the bikes in a previous tune up. I reluctantly agreed to the $130 in additional charges after the owner gave me his spiel about wear and tear. Then when I went to pick up the bikes there was an additional $40 in charges from other things they replaced without checking with me. After all the extra work they did, my brakes squeak and gears don't shift properly. Needless to say I will not be returning as I'd do a better job of tuning my bike at home. read more

Went here to get my flat tire fixed after blowing it out on a pothole. The store truly does have reasonable prices for its bicycles, and the cost of replacing my inner tube ($16) and labor ($24 for replacing inner tube, truing, tightening brakes) came out to $40 flat. Be aware they only accept MasterCard or Visa as credit. They have a selection of bikes: children's, bmx's, dahon folding, gt and schwinn mountain, racing, and even a tandem for much under what you would pay for in the city. They also have seats, helmets, and accessories for you to choose from. From the time I entered on a weekday morning to the time I left, it probably took 20 minutes to get it all fixed. I just stopped in to have his brakes adjusted and they had me in and out in 5 minutes. Not sure the young mans name that helped me, but I will be sure to compliment him to Mark when I go in to buy him a new bike for his birthday in a few weeks! But the problem was fixed in about ten minutes while I waited. $55 for a new tube and tire seemed a little $$$ to me, but I haven't had anything done in bicycle shops in recent years, so don't know. I been looking for a shop locally this place is AWESOME and this is my new home for my whole families biking repair, supplies and general bike question. I had 2 severely messed up bent bike tires (bike flew off the back of my car on a Sunday AM) New tires were going to be over 100$ each and this place not only was able to save my 2 tires and make them like new again but they took the bike in immediately and i had my bike back on the road with my son within 24 hours riding smoothly and safely. This all occurred on a Sunday. Not only do they have a great staff, great hours they are super honest which is what i really love about them. This shop offers a good range of different prices and brands (considering the store isn't too big). The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. They even let me test the bike outside the store to make sure it was a good fit. They also set up the bike rack on my car and put the bike on it. Great family run business. I used brookdale Cycle twice so far, first time was for a routine tune up, second time I had a small accident and broke my cannondale rear derailleur with the chain and hanger, both times they did a great job, the tune up was done within two days during the peak season, with good price. the second time when I needed to replace the broken parts, I bought the parts myself, they did excellent job installing and tuning them, it was done in less than a day, bike back new, price was very competitive, the owner didn't push to sell me any unneeded parts or services, extremely friendly and knowledgeable owner, I tried few other bike shops in the area and this place is cheaper much more friendly and no salesman tricks "big plus in my book", highly recommended. read more

I have now purchased 6 bicycles from this store. I loved the shop and even bought the little metal guard for the rear that's probably a 400% markup. I like a local business and want them to succeed. One of the bicycles I had was left under a tarp but humidity rusted it out. I took it in because the repairs are something I don't want to be troubled with. I paid $180 to have a new chain installed, the kickstand tightened up and the cables replaced. I was irked when my father in law brought the bike back as I was unavailable to pick it up. I found the plastic guard on the front broken and they had said it would be replaced. Now they say the parts not available? I'm talking about the two plastic discs that keep the front chain protected. There is only shifting in the rear. The seat is fused and apparently you cannot fix it but no effort was made to do so. Each point with rust still has rust and I'm cleaning the sprockets myself with a wire wheel and spraying myself. Very respectfully, if I pay 40% of the value of the total bike for repairs, it seems even the tires would have been cleaned. They really did the bare minimum. I took the bike back and they ran through using a wire brush in some quick rust points and glued the chain guard. I'm just beyond disappointed and living in Nutley, there's a closer bike shop I will patronize for a bit. I expected so much more for $180. read more
