I have been going to this place since I moved to Montclair in 2018. This is by far my favorite LBS in the area. This shop excels in every aspect that a cyclist could hope for. I brought my bike in for a new chain and, Joe, one of the mechanic, thoroughly inspected my entire bike, including measuring my disk rotors & pads, tire wear, etc. and then made solid recommendations as to what needed to be worked on. I felt like I stepped back into the stone ages the way I was treated here as a woman. I used to be a mountain biker when I was younger, but now being a Mom, I went here for a cruiser, and the attitude was one of condescension--I was even referred to as "her" with a flick of the wrist. But overall, I feel as if the store lied to me and I have seriously bad feelings about my experience here. I had been waiting for a specific bike model and they kept telling me that they had no idea when it would be in...and as they are the only bike store nearby who carries Trek, I stuck with them. After weeks of calling and waiting (during which the sales guys pretended to have no idea what I was talking about--I'd have to explain myself and wait for a long time to get a response), I bought a bike model because spring was arriving, but it was not the one I originally wanted. Well lo and behold, driving by the store the very next week, I see the bike I had been asking for sitting in front of the store on display. I nearly killed myself pulling the car over. When I asked for an exchange, I was refused--"I can't sell a used bike, I'd take a hit on this," the owner said. Clearly, they wanted to get rid of their stock. I felt taken. Diamond Cycle is terrific. They don't sell Trek, but they have many good options and are really nice to everyone. The older I get, the more I realize that's what really matters anyway. read more

I'd like to share some experiences that speak to the essence of good service and how to develop customer loyalty. A few years ago, I returned to cycling and had an opportunity to purchase a bike at a deep discount through my corporate program. Since I was was not up-to-date on current specs and technology, I visited the Montclair Bikery and was very upfront with the owner about why I was there. I showed him the specs and price for the bike I was looking at and asked if he felt spending a little more would get me something even better. He went online to look at the bikes he sells and told me that I would have to spend hundreds more for one with comparable specs. He said the bike I was considering had very good entry level components and he recommended buying it. The exchange was friendly and encouraging, which made quite an impression on me. That one experience alone compelled me to return to the Bikery when I was restoring my wife's vintage bike and needed parts. Their service team was very accommodating and provided everything I needed at reasonable prices. I have since been back a number of times for relatively small purchases, but each time I've visited, I have had some great conversations about cycling, local routes, etc. Anthony in particular is one of the nicest guys around and clearly has a passion for the sport. I recommended that my daughter buy a first helmet for my granddaughter at the Bikery and she said the staff was patient and a lot of fun to work with. I think the fact that I have had these experiences without making a large purchase is what separates the Bikery from many local bike shops. It shows that at any level, they want the customer experience to be positive and they understand how this leads to loyalty and word-of-mouth recommendations. When it's time for me to upgrade from my hybrid to a more serious road bike, the Bikery will be my go-to shop. Anyone who has been in business knows that problems arise from time to time, people make mistakes, and customers may leave unhappy. It is how those issues are handled that truly defines the character of the business and its owners, so I would encourage anyone who has had a negative experience to give the Bikery another shot. The staff was super friendly, they made my daughter feel special measuring her and then adjusting the seat until it was the right height for her to ride on. I bought my first road bike ever from this shop two summers ago (2011). The staff was friendly and understanding of my needs and set me up with the right bike without trying to oversell unnecessary accessories to a rookie biker. Since then, I've gone back every now and then for a tune up or an accessory and I've had nothing but positive experiences. I once brought in my bike in without an appointment and they brought it downstairs for a tune-up even though they were pretty busy and could have told me to come back later. All in all, I spent a lot of money on the Trek I purchased but I'm not sure that it would have cost me less anywhere else. The accessories, on the other hand, are a bit steep and can be found online for much cheaper. That's no surprise, but it's the one thing holding me back from giving this place 5 stars. read more

This is one of the best bike shops in Montclair. I ordered a bike and called them to put together. They not only took me in on a somewhat busy day-- they put my bike together in a couple of hours. They also have a good selection of bells, baskets, and other accessories. Montclair Bikery was helpful in providing information on my new bike as well as advising on accessories. They were incredibly thorough and have a text message system for when your bike is done being serviced. I had a light on my bike that they installed and they added in the batteries for me. Very kind, and extremely detailed staff. They go above and beyond. Even though this bike shop is a little farther from my house this will be the first one I go to for any of my biking needs. I did visit the other bike shop in town on Bloomfield Ave and was not pleased with their service or selection. read more

This time I knew what I wanted and they had it in stock (they have a good stock of product, they always seem to have what I need), they were super-friendly and sales process was seamless (the bike was even on sale). When I went to pick up the bike, they were again super-friendly, did a final check of the bike to make sure all is in good working order and I was on my way. We were hanging out in Montclair and decided to check out the local bike shops. We needed to get our growing boys some new bike helmets. The woman assisting us was so helpful. She explained exactly how a kids' helmet should fit and offered a few different options. They had a good selection of Specialized, Trek and Bontrager helmets. We decided to go with the Specialized. I almost didn't go here due to the reviews on here but I support local when I can so I stopped in the buy a bike for myself and my wife. I did research online prior and their prices matched the MSRP for Treks. The five stars come from when I returned to pick up the bikes and Tony was beyond helpful. He was kind enough to hook up the bike rack I purchased to my car and secure both bikes. He also clued me in to some local trails. Everyone else in here was helpful and polite as well. Maybe they were crummy in the past or maybe these reviews are skewed and filtered. Who knows. I would definitely recommend going here to others. read more

My family recently brought a bike here for service and at first told that they didn't have time then and that we should come back. Which was fine and so 3 days later I came back and gave them two weeks to fix the bike and low and behold the bike was not fixed and in fact told us that they had gotten back up. Two week should have been long enough time to service the bike. The cost of the parts was about $100 and the service was roughly $150. So they said to come back later to see if it could still be done that day or not. They were working on it then (right before close)and so it took them less then 3 hours to fix the bike and yet not only were they late they refused to acknowledge that they did anything wrong! After all that they charged even more money then the original quote. Stay away. Poor Customer Service and expensive! read more

This is the bike shop you MUST go to. The owner David and his staff are excellent, professional and helpful in assisting you to find the right bicycle and accessories for your needs. I have now purchase seven bikes over the last 10years from them as my kids continue to grow into new sizes. It is made easier because they do accept trade-ins for the brands that they sell. The service staff will keep your ride moving properly and they offer custom fitting to your bike (for a fee). This is definitely the type of small business that should be supported. read more

I have been here on a umber of occasions over the past three years, and my wife and I have purchased three bicycles from the shop. We have always felt that they were very helpful with the selection and test rides and finding a proper fit. Some commentary here mentions a lack of attention by the staff... My experience with that is simply this: it is a small business, and the few employees that work there often do find themselves between customers and the telephone. On one hand, I could say it is frustrating that when I am there I am not treated like I'm the only customer in the world... But that is so pretentious. On the other hand, I am happy that they are constantly getting pulled in different directions by different people! That is the greatest assurance that they will succeed into the future and I am very hopeful that they do.. In this world that Amazon is doing its best to destroy. I recently purchased a new bike, and like my last 3 bikes, I counted on the team at the Bikery to help me get the perfect shiny new machine. I had a LOT of questions! That's just me though, and so had the opportunity to speak with probably the entire staff at one point or another and got really helpful advice from everyone. Dave who owns the place, help me decide on the best frame for my abilities, and got me started with options for all the components. With help from Tammy and Dave and a lot of patience from Anthony, I picked the partz for what I hoped would be a fun bike to ride. Anthony in particular really got me to "think" about details that shaped decisions about component selection that are going to change my thinking on my riding! Once all the parts showed up, the team in service got my new bike together in short order, Dave C in service has worked on other members of my fleet of bikes, so I knew the build would be perfect, BUT of course I have questions, Ken (service manager) and his team in service, like the team in Sales had all the answers for me. Ultimately, my bike was perfect and all the details taken care of. Now I have an amazing bike that puts a smile on my face whenever I ride it (and often even when I don't). As a follow up, I decided to have a full fit session with Anthony (spent a good bit of money for my budget on the bike, should spend a few to make sure the fit is perfect!) The process is a few hours, questions and answers, flexibility tests, pedaling on the bike, video capture, video review, you get the idea! Well after all of that, the adjustments were pretty small (I had a fit done about 2 years ago, so had been using those numbers/measurements), but man, what a difference in the on the bike "feel"! The guys downstairs, in the service shop are GREAT! Considering I did not purchase my bike from them and only needed an assembly, I was pleasantly surprised that they took so much time to inform me of every detail of the bike and my safety. Blake was especially helpful when he discovered the fork was bent and although they could put it together "as is" it would not benefit me in the long run. As for the store front shop....OHH BOY! Whoever that lady is....she is horrible! I am glad I gave the shop a second chance after that encounter! I wonder if she realizes how rude and stand off-ish she really is! read more

It's a completely different crowd than it was just a few months ago which makes me think that the high turnover is contributing to the negative reviews I just finished reading. Completely overpriced for service. They charged my wife $15 each for two children's bikes to tighten a single brake on each. Literally took 60 seconds. Most neighborhood places would do it for free. The toddler scooter was $20 to buy, $15 to tighten the brake. Do NOT recommend. I now see other reviews and wish we checked before going here. read more
