Amazing fit experience. I came in with my bike and Kathryn spent 2 hours with me going over everything including cleat positioning, saddle height, and bar position. She even helped me with some of my mechanics. I went out for 90 miles the next two days and had the best pain in the butt(glutes). Prior to seeing her I only ever felt my quads, but after the session and adjustments I now am engaging my glutes and quads and see a big difference in my ability to push longer. I plan to look into some of the classes they have online and then this winter will be planning to get some coaching as well. They were super friendly and helpful. I will be back for sure. read more

Amazing, impressive service and work! I had been looking for a vintage Pashley Princess for years. Finally, I located one--in Texas! After it shipped to New Jersey, I looked around for a reputable bicycle shop to put my baby together. I called Jalapeno Cycling worked with Andrew. Very professional communication. He got back to my calls and messages right away. The estimated time for repair and pick up date were also right on the money; I knew exactly when my bike would be ready for pick up. I did not have to wait. As he discovered new issues to be resolved with this old bike, he frequently sent photos via text and asked questions BEFORE making repairs. He not only reassembled the whole bicycle FROM PARTS (!), he repaired the dynamo, fixed up the tires, and suggested a more appropriate bell (as the one on the bike was added on much later and didn't look quite right). He even touched up scratches in the vintage enamel! Who does that?! Jalapeno Cycles, that's who! Superstar of bicycle repair and service. Horrible bike fitter. I went there with no numbness to pain. Left with numbness and pain. Got charged a full assessment. Meanwhile I brought my old assessment. Didn't even get lasered on the bike or nothing. As well had a friend that blew his knee out. Do not recommend at all. read more

This place is AWESOME! I just bought a bike from Craigslist and needed some new wheels. Shopped around for a bit and finally decided to do business here when I walked in on a rainy day and was greeted by Andrew (who answered all my questions and we had a rich conversation). I've only been here once but I had an awesome experience. I iniitally went to Montclair Bikery first since they have been opened longer and had more reviews. On Google Maps, they had very good reviews. But, when I walked in, I kinda' knew that my wallet was going to get hurt. I walked around a bit and walked out. Try Jalapeño first before the other bike stores in the area. It'll just save you time as well as a lot of money. Unlike the other bike stores in the area in which the price makes you wince, this place is reasonable. For adults, a tune costs $40 for a mild one and $80 for a bike that needs one badly. For kids, a tune up is $25 or $45, using the same logic. Montclair Bikery as well as the other places literally charge double that amount. I kid you not. TECHNICAL EXPERIENCE. The owner used to be the editor of a bicycle magazine and appears to do a good deal of racing. His wife who runs the spin classes there, is something like a nationally ranked bike racer. I'm not an expert but I'm assuming that they definitely know what they are doing because they are actual professional racers, rather than just repair people or just hobbyists. RESULTS. The bike I got back rode like a dream. So smooth. But more importantly than that, they did business the right way. Let me explain. When they saw one of the bikes I brought in had really negligible things wrong with it, the owner actually took $10 off the minimum charge of the $40 tune up. Now, that's morally right business. The way I think everyone should be doing business. It's about doing the right thing and that's the type of people I love. You know you won't get cheated. It also tells me that they don't do this for the money; they do it because they love biking and people. Even though I was running late and called in to say if it would be ok to get there about 10 minutes after closing time, he cheerfully responded by saying it wasn't a big deal and to take my time. I can tell you that a lot of places will wait but they respond with this annoyed sound on the other line. Finally, I'm not the most extrovert guy but he's just such a happy fellow that I felt relaxed and I was soon talking up a storm. Talking about each other's day. He's a really good guy. Jalapeño are technical experts on biking, they charge very fair prices, and they are absolutely cheerful and make you feel happy. What more can you ask for? read more

From the moment I called to inquire about a bike repair service, Jalapeño's customer service was top notch. I am originally from Brooklyn and bike shops were a dime a dozen. In my current area, it's hard finding a bike shop that's walking distance. I ran a quick search one day before I decided to go to my usual bike spot (two towns over). It's safe to say I was excited to see Jalapeño come up on my gmaps! This small, clean, yet up to date shop is ran by Andrew and Kathryn. Both were very warm and welcoming and their dog was the same. In fact, I brought my pup over the following day. In regards to price, the repairs and packages are fair. My service was a full Body bike tune. It was completed the very next day. Sweet, first review!!!! So, I'm tough on shops. There are things that I expect and if you've read any of my other bike shop reviews you know that my experiences have not been good. I have not had a shop to call my "home" since the mid-80's. I've been all over this state and have been disappointing for one reason or another. I first met Andrew and Kathryn through cyclocross and VonHof Cycles. I felt comfortable around these very open and honest people. When they opened the shop in Bloomfield I had to give it a go. I dropped off my BMC for an overhaul. Andrew was up front with what he saw and the costs. There was constant communication for the week that the bike was in the shop (my doing, I could have gotten it much earlier). When I picked it up we hung out and chatted for a while. I really felt comfortable just hanging out and talking bike. I missed this personal experience that just doesn't come with the other shops I've been to. They all want you in and out, like they're turning over tables at a restaurant. My first ride was on the trainer. The bike was dead quiet and shifted very smooth. I wasn't expecting this, but I reserved judgement until I got it on the road. Today I did my usual "hills" ride and I was totally blown away. It was by far the best experience I had on this bike. EVER! It wasn't this good when I bought it and no one has even come close to dialing it in like this. It really re-sparked my joy for road riding. Next is my CX bike and then I'm going to do fittings on both bikes and start remote coaching with Kathryn. This is a no BS shop. I never felt like I was misguided or there was any hard sell. I am more than happy to drive from Jersey City to Bloomfield to have this type of service. It felt like home. I can't say enough positive things about the experience.
