Dear Yelp family and random internet strangers who stumble across this review: I am saddened and surprised about the recent slew of negative reviews (2020 through 2022) about NYC Velo. The reviewers are either butt-hurt about something out of the vendor's control or are not being rational. I understand that pandemic has affected all of us negatively... but please do not take it out on a GREAT business, also known as my favorite New York City local bike shop (LBS). C'mon man, there is no need to be a d*ck, ever. I am not trying to gaslight anyone... but your parents would be ashamed. In my opinion, the entire staff at NYC Velo are polite, courteous and humble. Their bed-side manner and white glove customer service is unparalleled. Whether it is the front of the house or back with mechanical/tech services, these gentlemen are the bees knees. As of May 2022, I have toed the line 6 times at an Ironman 140.6 mile full distance triathlon: Maryland 2015, Lake Placid x2 2016, 2017, Arizona 2018, Louisville 2019, Florida 2021, and I am registered for Florida November, 5, 2022. I think I know bikes. The bike nerds and whack lames on 9W can not hold a light to my candle... well maybe my coach can, lol. Yeah, he went to the World Championships in Kona, so I'll STFU and crawl back into my shadow. But I digress. NYC Velo is a 3rd party vendor who is connected to TriBike Transport. They are responsible for packing and shipping my bicycle to and from my Ironman race. The price varies from $350-$400 each race, round trip. It's a hell of a lot easier than to disassemble and fly with it on a plane. FACTS. I sit on my bike saddle for a duration of 7+ hours every Ironman race day because 112 miles is not trivial. I spend 4-6 months to prepare for every race. I wake up at 4:30 AM ET to train... call the whaaa-ambulance yo! I came in yesterday with my Time Trial bike (2015 Cannondale Slice Ultegra Di2) and spoke to Zach. We spoke for 45+ minutes discussing my future in triathlon. There was no pressure to buy anything... but I was inspired. He took breaks to greet every customer who interrupted our discussion to answer questions. I was cool with it, as I was a bike rookie once. Zach wanted to build a long term, sustainable relationship with a lifetime customer, while being mindful of low hanging fruit. He had me at hello. I returned today with my wife's hybrid bike for a tuneup. My bike tech, Paul, inspected the bike and gave a fair and equitable assessment. There was no rush and we agreed on a fair timeline: for next week. Afterwards, I walked to the Dunkin Donuts on 6th and 1st and picked up donuts for the staff to say THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE. WHY? Because it is a thankless job. It's not lucrative either. Bike techs are not going to retire early and pop bottles like Kanye and all of these Kardashians who DGAF about us lowly peasant middle class. Let that sink in, fam. The staff at NYC Velo are patient, kind and work so hard to please ALL customers... especially the casual ones, who are one-off. Listen fam, I recommend everyone I know to NYC Velo. TL;DR - NYC Velo delivers on service and care. I originally came into the shop looking to buy a fixed/single speed and got a bit overzealous - after 3 days I emailed the shop and chickened out of the originally commissioned purchase and they quickly helped me onto a better fit "do it all" bike after describing what I was looking for. The manager Zach was patient with the shifting of what I wanted and made sure to answer my questions regardless of how mundane - as long as I asked. He also helped guide me along by prompting questions and providing recommendations/alternatives if I seemed uncertain. Soon after my purchase, I needed some consulting on the fit of the bike and reached out to the shop (again). Andrew (the owner) was quick to respond and made sure I had everything I needed to be comfortable on the bike. I'll agree that the shop can be a bit intimidating for a non "bike person" but as someone who's gone through the purchase with them and even circled back for support after the purchase - all you need to do is walk in ask some questions and you'll be pointed in the right direction for your needs. read more

JUst recently took my bike in for a flat, the guys at the front desk were polite, but the mechanic in the back has a condescending and humorless attitude, I asked him to simply measure something for possible future work and he retorted in a snotty way "that will cost you 10 more dollars for my expertise opinion" This was not the fist time I was treated by him in such a manner and I will never go back there again. Not helpful at all. I went to buy a helmet a few weeks ago and got mired in an idiotic discussion about colors with a salesperson, who seemed really put upon at having to wait on me. You would think that they would promote all the various helmets they have and not just focus on colors, but not to me. ("I can bring you a white one"..."Uh, are there other options?" ... "No" ..."Um, okay, bye then, I guess"). I ended up getting a fabulous helmet at a Trek store in Cobble Hil (where the service was the polar opposite of this place). There's also a Trek store in Chelsea that's terrific. Shame, cause I used to go to Velo a fair amount years ago to get punctures fixed, and they were great then. read more

Great Non-Sale Experience...huh? I came to Andrew, John, Timothy and the NYC Velo guys on 2nd Ave for a specific bike which is pretty much sold out until '21 models come in some months from now. They are vigilantly observing distancing protocols by serving customers outside the store. Given how difficult this must be on them it's impressive to see how cool, helpful, and energized they were each time I was there. They clearly have a good rapport with steady customers, and with the neighborhood in general. I was high maintenance: I wanting to test ride the bike twice....these things ain't cheap. No prob, they encouraged it. When I did purchase the bike I made a special request, which they met graciously. Andrew spent time with me, despite the circumstances, on aspects of bike fit with the promise we would do more when things got a bit back to normal. I discovered, however, that the bike simply didn't fit me and would require too much moding to really work. Andrew agreed to take it back, again, graciously. I believe the guys did their best in insuring the bike did fit me. Trying to avoid a trek into the city from PA, I called close to a dozen bike shops in the northeast looking for a 64cm Surly for a 6'7 man-- no luck. Finally called NYC Velo and boom! They had what we needed and were super helpful about putting it on hold until we could get into the city! Zach was amazing during the whole process. Knowing we wanted to get in and out of the city fast, Zach had the bike ready for a quick test spin the minute we walked in the door. He answered all our questions- very knowledgeable. They Broke My Bike.. The mechanics are great, nice guys.. know what they are doing.. Front Staff need a little help with client retention skills. My Bike is an old Ugly mountain bike, I ride it everywhere, had it since 1995, It's travelled with me, I am very attached to my bike. So I decided to upgrade My crank, and chainrings that were worn out. It wasn't the simple job I thought; required a longer bottom bracket spindle. So I left the bike with them. They got the actual work done pretty fast, did a good job too. Here is the issue: When test riding my bike they cracked the front rim. It was in rough shape, but I was riding it without issue in that rough shape for a few months. I knew not to slam it into a curb, or whatever they did. Now accidents happen, old parts do fail, you fix one thing and the something else will break, BUT, when you break something of a clients YOU are responsible for that. The Front Sales guy tried to tell me "We were doing you a favour" and "That was a safety issue". Brother Your Shop BROKE MY BIKE! I didn't hear a We Are Sorry, or nothing. Is Buddy expecting me to say :"Thanks For BREAKING My Bike, Now I don't Have to Break It Myself" And to top that off he still nailed me with the full cost, which was about $10 higher than their quote on the repairs. I've worked in Bike Shops, in 1987 I was the guy on the desk dealing with repairs back home in Toronto (just so you don't think I'm some competitor). If You Break something that wasn't broken when it was brought into the store, you say "I'm Really Sorry, let me knock off something on the labour charge" Had they done that I would gladly be a return customer, but as this stands, NEVER AGAIN. And no thank you to the 4Kg iron wheel they tried to sell me for $70 after breaking mine. And somehow they also managed to snap off the Presta valve cap on my wheel. I have been giving these sad-faced muppets my money for at least 13 years, so u would think that by now they would know that if they don't personally like a person, then at least be capable of sitting on dumb shhh long enough to make an honest buck, but nahhhh, not these guys, they're the "deciders". after spending 50 bucks with these "gentlemen" today, the mech who always has a bad vibe for me every time I come in for some reason, rain or shine, he is an ass in a hat. the guy has never been respectful or professional. and tonight he went so far as to put words in my mouth (which u should never try and do if the customer is in fact more intelligent than u). does it make sense that I would come all the way from jersey to have u put my brake levers on and NOT connect them so that they work? does it makes sense to spend that kind of money and walk away with a bike that is not in working order? a person comes in ur shop to have u fix the problem. not project animous, racial politics or any of that dumb shhh. and it was obvious to me that is where all of this was coming from. these guys are not as culturally sophisticated as I would have hoped. three times I have left thinking these guys are bigots in the wrong business. but tonight, the short guy manager got on his horse and tried to ultimatum me (which was cute)......and it might have worked if i was not a damn good mechanic. I never once actually needed ur services. I am busy and just like to shop and be supportive of cycling culture wherever I happen to be. needless to say, I will not go back to the store, but trying to use a bike shop like a blunt instrument of white fragility will not do sherlock. all u did was run a good paying customer away with ur thinly-veiled reverse psychology pretending to be customer service (give Hegel's grandkids back his tired dialectic). and that mechanic guy needs to find another line of work. I asked this dude to wrap my bars up to where the flat part taper with the round. he cut the tape to the line that was there before instead of listening to me. he is burned out on it and it shows. holding ur shaky business model over my head like it's 1965 (like ur special and I don't have many options) was never gonna get u a hero cookie champion. ..and now u know, that I know! I popped my front tire riding down 2nd Ave and walked a few blocks to this shop to buy and replace the inner tube for my front tire. The guy working the register was super chill and helpful- he helped me find the right size tube, answered my questions. He even got down and his hands and knees to read the specs on my tire without me asking. If I had just encountered him I'd probably walk away happy. This guy is the reason my rating is 2 stars instead of 1. So I replaced the tube right in the store, where another patron is finishing up making repairs on his bike. It took me less than 3 minutes to finish up and while I'm doing so, an old man walks past me a few times. He doesn't say anything and I'm not in his way, but I see him looking at me more than once. Right as I finish, some other guy comes up to me and asks me what I'm doing. I told him I just bought a tube and just finished replacing it. He then ordered me to leave because he's the only one who's allowed to make repairs in the store. The old guy and the bossy dude put off some really bad vibes. I won't be going back again. I'm here giving you business, not bothering anyone and you treat me like I'm a nuisance. There's no reason to give me that attitude, but now that you did, I'll support another bike shop that treats people with respect. Chad may be from Minnesota or North Dakota and he likes Surly (http://surlybikes.com/). We're friends already. Of course he takes down the 52cm Cross-Check for me to try and it's just barely too tall when I stand flat-footed. Of course they don't have a 50cm frame stocked. No fear--Chad assures me they can order it and have it in a few days. He takes my 30% deposit and gets things rolling. Very smooth. I'm tingly and clammy because in a week I'm going to marry my mail-order bicycle. I hope she's as lovely and faithful as I've dreamed. --------------------------------- Chapter II: The Art of the Pick-Up: Well, the good news is I love my 50cm Surly Cross-Check and it's tucked away in my garage. Bad news is Chad was the best person to deal with here, by far the friendliest, and really patient. Of course Chad wasn't working the one day I needed to be fitted and to iron-out all the minor details. I guess if you want to deal with him, go on a Sunday. Anyway, two other dudes helped me, as well as the awesome grease-monkeys in the back. And really all that matters in a bike shop is a crew of stellar mechanics. Velo has those. My only complaint is these two dudes didn't seem to understand that while their profit margin is low on a bike--and I appreciate that from a business stance--I'm dropping over a thousand fucking dollars right now, in your place of business, instead of five other LBSs. So, please, deal with my picky, neurotic, obsessive bordering-on-psychotic questions and kindly adjust my seat, hoods, and stem like I asked you to. No. Another 1/8 of an inch. There we are. Thanks kindly. They also needed to be reminded a few times before they put on the sticker that gets me my free, liftetime brake-and-gear adjustments. Come on, guys. Get your game up. Again, free tune-ups make you no money, but it makes me a happy customer. Who may come back and spend $300 on clipless pedals, a helmet, bike shorts, and/or a pump. Unlikely, though. I bike naked at night. I remain fond of this shop, and recommend it to moderately experienced riders. If you're completely foreign or indignant towards the idea of bike geometry and frame size, seat positions, stem positions, intended use and purpose, brands and makes... Velo may be a tiny bit intimidating for you. I trust that they'll pair you with a great ride in spite of this, but maybe you want to check out a few shops before coming here. If you're a veteran, take-no-shit "I-know-how-to-true-my-spokes-and-calculate-my-gearing ratios-in-my-underground-workshop" roughneck, find a store that's higher end and has more specialized equipment and staff. For the parts you're likely looking for, Velo may be a bit overpriced or understocked. If you're an urban commuter or recreational rider who's interested in wetting their feet in the Road, Mountain, or Cross waters, Velo will be a perfect fit for you. If you need a helmet, a headlight, a heavenly Brooks saddle or a bag, Velo will have what you want. If you're here to buy a bike, make sure you come to them with questions and some idea of what you want to buy. You're pretty likely going to find a ride that gets you off, and will become a repeat customer. They let you test-ride anything for free. In closing, I like Velo. I like Velo a lot. I think some of their employees are a bit rough around the social edges, but I came here because they're an out-and-out Surly dealer, not because I needed to be babied. We don't all have the luxury of working in a bike shop four days a week, but that doesn't mean we don't love to ride any less than you. All this aside and no hard feelings whatsoever, if you're hot and dripping over a Kona, Surly, Litespeed, Bianchi, or Felt 'cycle, I wholeheartedly suggest giving Velo your business. Just do a bit of research beforehand (http://www.bikeforums.net/ is a great place to search for answers) to make sure they install/adjust/sell you what you ask them. They have an okay selection of accessories, and tend to have more high-end selections - so if you're not afraid to splurge, come over here. If you're a casual rider that doesn't care about buying a cheap botranger saddle, maybe you don't have to come here. But you're in the mood for a more decent fizik saddle, this is the place to go. Long story short, if you're a casual biker you might not appreciate all the goodies they have in store here, but if you're really into good frames and accessories - this is a great downtown option. read more

After a terrible crash, I needed some help fixing my hanger and my shifter. The dude working there was helpful, telling me where I can purchase the products for cheaper (eBay, chainreactioncycles etc.) instead of charging me a crazy amount for an ultegra shifter. So, I applaud you and thank you for saving me ~$200 on a shifter. He also did a mini tune-up on my bike, making sure everything was shifting properly before I left. I've visited and purchased from many bike shops in Manhattan and Brooklyn and NYC Velo is among the easiest to deal with. At any moment they have to "John Malkovich" every kind of customer - absolute beginners, intermediators, lifers, racers, and unfortunately the snobby, egotistical "I know more than you's." Anybody reading this falls into (at least) one of those categories, and good bike shops are prepared for this. I'm an intermediate SS commuter searching for a fairly (but not impossibly) specific bike - All City Big Block 2018 - specifically because the newer 2019 models are finished in pink-magenta fade. Are. You. Kidding. Me. Maybe QBP's marketing department isn't getting enough iron in their diet? After giving up hope online, one night after dinner I walked in without any plan on purchasing anything and "duhn duhn DUHHHH!" on the shelf was a Big Block. Long brown hair/flat-brim cap/beard dude (sorry I forgot your name) took it down but it was too big, however they had my size (somehow already built?!) in the basement. I immediately put a deposit down, came back a few days later, and completed the purchase. A few tweaks later (shorter stem, narrower bars, switched from fixed to free) and I'm a happy Big Block rider. NYC Velo has a crazy-wide selection of bikes (Bromptons, track/fixies, TT, gravel-grinders) and gear (who knew there were so many Mission Workshop options?) but they REALLY make great use of that retail space. Its not overwhelming but their selection might make you reconsider the kind of rider you are and where you want to ride. read more

NYC Velo is a gem! It's a great bike shop with a very knowledgeable, helpful and friendly staff. I'm new to NYC (by way of Los Angeles) and was in need of an awesome road bike. I spotted two (one in particular) I liked via online, www.nycvelo.com, but wasn't sure if it would be available, given that we are in Covid-19 times and all the bikes (especially in my size) have sold out. The shop in East Village was almost an hour pass it's scheduled closing time but I decided to call anyway in hope that someone would pick up. I just so happen to speak with Andrew (Founder & Owner of NYC Velo) who was super helpful and took the time after hours to converse with me on a bike perfect for my 6'5 frame and weight. I arrived at the shop the following morning and was able to purchase the bike I wanted. Again, the staff there is awesome. The bike was at their Hell's Kitchen location and one of the guys (staff) went to that location to pick up the bike and bring it back to me in East Village. I had a decent experience at the bike shop despite the social distancing. I walked out and he actually came out and got me and pick the bike out so I was able to pick it up the next day. I am happy with the purchase and the price range of the bike. It's a giant bike I also got a helmet and accessories. I do need the handlebars adjusted because my wrist hurts a little bit so I have to go back. Overall I would definitely go back again.
