The premiere bike store in the city! I bought my bike here in 2020 (Giant Escape Hybrid) and they were helpful and informative during my purchase. When buying a bike here they also give you brake adjustments and other minor TLC for free. For anything other than that they are very reasonable with their pricing and the customer service is top notch. Each time I bring my bike in for a tune up I leave 20% faster and with a smile on my face. Great selection of gear and other bike stuff as well! read more

I called looking for a particular headlight, which they had. I asked the price for a Light and Motion Urban 1000, and they said $140, which was $50 higher than MSRP. I asked why it was higher than MSRP, thinking he might have a set with a rear light, and the guy who answered the phone said "This is a business, we sell for more than we buy it for". I then said that another shop I called has it for MSRP (but that shop is much further away from me), and the guy said "I don't care, go buy it from them". I told him MSRP is $90, and he again said "I don't care, go get it somewhere else". Really poor customer service skills, and having worked in three shops when I was younger, I certainly recognize it when I see it. No call for any kind of nastiness, especially when someone takes the time to call in. He could have made a case for the shop, why I should come in, anything. How they treat people clearly made a different case, I have zero reasons to go there, ever. read more

Well, I did read the negative reviews about this business a year ago and I do not know what they were about. I have had three bikes serviced there - including a backfiet - and I was always satisfied. My latest experience was with Reese: A+++++. I had a recurring issue with a deflating tire that would not resolve with the usual change of inner tube and I kid you not he spent a half hour patiently taking off the wheel of the backfiet, then checking the inner tube and picking debris out of the exterior of the tire to finish with slowly running the tip of his fingers into the inside of the tire and tweezed out a tiny splinter of metal as thin as the hair of a toothbrush. I have never seen this level of dedication before and he had to leave early that day. I sat there watching him completely mesmerized. Now David is great too. He can change the inner tube of a backfiet in less than ten minutes all by himself - and mine weighs a ton. It totally feels like a pit stop. Impressive! I really cannot say enough about this shop. The mechanics are great. Give them a chance. read more

I've relied on West Side Velo for years as a drop-off and pick-up point for TriBike Transport. Nearly 2 weeks had gone by since TriBike Transport took my bike at USAT Triathlon Nationals in Milwaukee; I was surprised that it hadn't arrived. I had not received the usual email notifying me that it was at the shop. So I called West Side Velo about it and was told that my bike wasn't there. I spent the day trying to reach TriBike Transport to find out where it was. TriBike finally let me know that my bike WAS at West Side Velo and had been there since August 11. I called West Side Velo back to say that TriBike said the bike was there. Was it? It was. I asked why I'd been told that it wasn't when I'd called earlier and the guy on staff who answered said that he was too busy to check. I asked, in that case, why hadn't he just said, "I don't know." (I spoke to the same guy both times I called). His response: "You're not our customer." Well, I actually thought that I was. I always purchased something when I dropped off my bike, and I don't think that West Side Velow takes bikes for TriBike Transport as a charity. But if he says I'm not their customer, I'm definitely not now. read more

This shop is amazing! I came for a race and called them to see if they can put my bike together. In the process they noticed that some pieces were apart and one was broken. David, the person who was helping me, and his team made some phone calls to find the piece. After their efforts, they finally got it, and got my bike together! Thanks to them I could do the GFNY race. Not only that, I was able to leave my box with them and they put the bike back in the box Monday morning. Finally, I could go back to Denver, Colorado! I received really terrible service here. The guy manning the store sounded irritated and talked down on us. Came back one more time since it was the only store that carried the bike I wanted to see, and the guy's attitude was slightly better, but still not great. There was another rep that was significantly friendlier, but he seemed like he was doing his own thing. I hope I never have to return here again, and Danny's down the street has amazing customer service. Maybe I'll drop by in a year or two in case the employees changed. read more

I purchased two bikes at NYC Velo this weekend. We are avid road cyclists, but both wanted a single or fixed gear bike that we could use for casual riding and commuting. I have been stopping by Velo once or twice a week for over a year looking at the bikes, and trying to figure out how I could fit two more into our apartment. Everyone at Velo is super relaxed, and low key. Not once did they try to sell me anything or do more than just give some helpful info. (This isn't the norm for bike shops in my experience.) This week I finally made the space for two more bikes, we test rode them for an hour, grabbed a beer and a sandwich at The Cannibal in Gotham Market while some small adjustments were made, and rode out the door on two new bikes. We couldn't be happier. Customer service is a 10/10, and the purchases were made with complete confidence. Velo has an incredible stock of interesting bikes and kits, and I fear I will be back for two more at some point. read more

I'm a loyal NYC Velo Hell's Kitchen customer. I've commuted via bicycle for five years, and I've purchased three bikes here. The service is great. With one of the bikes I had several warranty issues, and after I reached out to the bike company to express my displeasure, they contacted NYC Velo, and Caesar, the manager at the Hells Kitchen location, and the owner, Andrew, reached out and took care of everything. They got me in the bike I really wanted -- the Surley Midnight Special. Now I couldn't be happier. These guys are great. Don't ever come here. They will just rip you off! I was riding Saturday morning and got two flats in less than 5miles. So I went to NYC Velo because it was the closest bike shop. I am not an expert, so I stopped there and asked the mechanic (expert) to take a look at the tire and the wheel. He said there was nothing wrong with the wheel so there must be something wrong with the tire and convinced me into buying a new tire. I spent $88.71 in a new tire and tube. Completely worthless!!!!!!! The problem was on the wheel all along!!! I got 3 more flats before reaching George Washington bridge. When fixing the third flat I noticed that there was about 3 inches of the wheel without any tape. I put some paper in there and at the first bike shop I found the mechanic looked at my wheel and found the issue. The wheel tape was worn out and at a point the wheel spoke was getting in touch with the tube and piercing it. A $5.00 fix!!! Instead I payed almost 90 for a new tire and installation when my old tire was perfectly good (less than 3 months of moderate road use). On top of that, I used 3 tubes (each at 8 bucks, adds up to 24). Ive been literally robbed! No other way to described it! read more

Came to NYC Velo (located in Gotham West Market next to Blue Bottle) to look for a helmet. They have a decent selection of Giro and Bell helmets that other places might not have. It also seems to be rare to find a decent bike shop near Central Park/Midtown West, since every shop is geared towards rentals. The single employee working in the store at the time (didn't catch his name) was very helpful in helping me choose a proper helmet with proper sizing and explaining to me the different price points and the differences in each "level" of helmets. Essentially, he said "the less helmet, the more expensive it is". Make sense, I guess. All prices here are pretty much MSRP. Trying out these helmets were useful as it helped me make an educated decision on which helmet to get. Though I didn't purchase my helmet here, the man was very nice and helpful. Went in to ask about repairing the tires on some old school bikes that Velo stores for us as building tenants. Matt, the clerk, hands me a black three ring binder full of excel sheets of numbers and such followed by silence. Seriously? I am just a mom with her kid who happens to be clueless about tires. That is why I am asking you for some assistance...... Stinks, because the building offers mandatory free bike storage. Can't take the bikes upstairs and chaining the kids bikes to a bike stand is just weird. Perhaps that's what merited the snarkyness from this person? The obligatory free bike storage? Velo is very beautiful in a minimal tiny space. There are like three bikes in the space that are very very expensive. Velo seems exclusive to serious wealthy bicycling pros. There is definitely a niche and Velo has found it. For the rest of us neighborhood plebeians Enoch's Bike shop is friendly and welcoming and affordable. read more

Worst bike store in NYC. I live pretty close by and gave it several chances but never again. It's almost like they don't want the business. Never acknowledge you come in to store and are waiting. I brought in a new bike, felt a little issue with front which needed a spacer. Guy wanted to dismantle new bike for $150 to check it. I declined and asked to just fix front issue I had described. I was then told they don't have the tool to do the work. I left, bikes up to Toga, they fixed in 5 mins and charged 9.95. Unbelievable. I hate hate hate Velo, pack of full of shit dickheads. Definitely above and beyond here. Dropped in on a whim to see if they had a certain Brooks saddle after calling 4 other bike shops and getting denied. Didn't have it at this particular shop but the owner, Andrew I believe, called over to his other store in the East Village and ended up bringing it over himself the next day for me to pick up. Super chill employees and clean shop. Conveniently located next to the Intrepid off the Hudson River bike path @ 45th and 11th. Bonus: It's right next to the new Gotham Market West (think mini-Chelsea Market type spot) so I was able to grab a pint while I was there. read more

I really love supporting local businesses in Hells Kitchen and needed a pair of spinning shoes so I stopped by Velo around 8:15 am on my way to work. Tim was more than helpful, and explained the shoe options and the differences for each. Even though the store is small in size, they seem to have a lot of inventory; everything you need from accessories to helmets, backpacks and gear. The store is very well laid out, not cluttered or cramped with random things. You can tell that the merchandise is planned and caters to the needs of their clients and the Manhattan terrain. I ended up with a pair of Giro shoes which seem to be very well made and comfortable. I also needed cleats which I purchased there as well. Tim offered to put them on for me and I will pick them up after work. Aside from friendly and helpful staff, they are open early and close late (8:00 am - 9:00 pm) double plus points there. Overall, this was a great experience and I look forward to trying out the new shoes. read more

I'm familiar with the Lower East Side location. This was my first visit to the Hell's Kitchen shop. Super helpful and friendly; it's the reason that going into the (right) bike shop beats any online deal you can find (i.e. it's worth spending a few extra $ to make sure you're getting what you need and want and that - if any installation or adjustments are required - it's done right). I went in for my rear wheel/tire which I had been having some issues with, and wound up purchasing great metal toe cages (which the employee offered to install quickly and did) and a helmet light. Support those mom&pop stores in NYC... while they still are here with us. Don't regret not having supported the "small guys" after the Manhattan landscape only consists of big, expensive stores and chains. read more

I stopped by to get a service, having not been on the bike for several months. The mechanic said that it didn't need a full service and that I should get outside and enjoy the lovely weather on it! He checked the brakes and gears and charged me for a brake test. Most other bike shops would have taken my money, kept the bike for days and in all likelihood not have done much more to the bike than he did in 10 minutes. If you, like me, are an amateur cyclist, with above average ambitions for cycling, this is the place for you. The team here is extremely knowledgeable and incredibly willing to spend time with you to discuss bike repairs and accessories. I recently participated in the AIDS LifeCycle from SF to LA. Although it was advised by Velo against making any major changes before my big ride (particularly without a formal fitting), my lower back was in agony. Wilson was able to suggest an extension of my stem and raised my bike seat, which allowed me to ride 545 miles relatively pain free and without injury. Additionally Martin walked me through various bike accessories prior to my ride, without any hassle to buy. Proud to call this place MY bike shop! read more

I had never been to Velo but the two guys there tonight (5/21) were insanely helpful - though we were just using Velo for a drop off for the shipping carrier,they answered all our questions, and even adjusted my b/f's bike after looking at his fit for neck pain.
