The layout of this shop is pretty narrow and it's more of a "garage bike shop" than a shopping spot for cyclists. I went in for a simple basket and they had a lot more than that (and not a lot of baskets!) It's a hard core bike shop with tons of gadgets and functional stuff - not really a place for athletic clothes or starter bike shopping. Considering this shop is in midtown, it primarily serves cyclists who are messengers that need things like locks, helmets, lights and other fixtures. It has a second floor with some athletic gear but not much selection. Highly recommend for couriers and delivery personnel who need to make a stop for their bike accessories. read more

As I was leaving work I discovered a had a flat tire. I saw City Bicycles was nearby but closing in 10 minutes. After calling them, I ran to get there before they closed and got there with one minute to spare. I was only intending to buy a tube and change it myself as to not keep them open... but Charlie offered to stay an extra 10 minutes and install it for me. (For a labor charge of course). I have been to many bike shops in the city, purchasing bikes, getting mine fixed or tuned up and have to say that City Bicycles and its staff, are all amazing and provide you with fantastic customer service. The owner Jhonatan is always happy to lend a helping hand and makes sure his customers are always satisfied. Charlie who works there is extremely nice and a great guy who provides great customer service as well. The really great thing about City Bicycles is that it's run by owner Jhon and a couple of staff members (some in the back tuning and fixing bikes) so they Really give great attention to their customers and make sure their customers are always happy. They also sell great E-scooters, and I heard they may start selling Electric Skateboards soon too, which is something we need in NYC since there is only really one store downtown that sells various E-Skateboards. They are also a TRUE bicycle shop that has anything and everything one could/would need to ride their road bike or mountain bike. Their prices are very reasonable and they will always work with you on prices (if they can and you are not asking for a huge discount on something they have no problem selling at full price when the high bike season comes). I also always notice all the delivery guys from various restaurants in Midtown go to their shop for a tuneup or parts, etc. All in all, I prefer this type of bike shop instead of the large corporate type of shops that don't care since their staff only work for a paycheck, but at City Bicycles, you always deal with the owner (Jhon) who is a great guy and always willing to help. I always have a great experience when I visit their shop and walk out happy. If there is ever an issue, they'll say; "No Problem, just bring it back, and we will take care of it" and if it's something small, he will just fix it for you. I highly recommend City Bicycles for anyone looking to purchase a new bike, whether a Customized Race bike, a great mountain bike, or regular road bikes. Customer service is 10/10. I read some of the negative reviews and it's obvious that they left a bad review because they think this shop should be like a Modell's Sporting Goods type of shop that sells every type of sporting equipment from soccer gear to skiing equipment.. this is not that, this is a true Bike shop for real bike riders and avid cyclists. so If you're looking for a beach bike with a basket for your groceries, you might as well just get a City Bike rental account and one of those blue City Bikes you see people riding. This is a Bicycle shop for avid Bike riders, although they have various options for everyone if you're looking to purchase a bike for your wife or kids.I'm sure Jhon will get you one and possibly even not make a profit. I personally think it's a great shop for avid cyclists, but they can certainly get you whatever you may need or want. Including Electric Scooters, which are great. keep up the great work guys. I went to five other bike shops in the city before coming here and I really should have just come here. I got a flat tire a couple weeks back and ran out of spare innertubes and my innertube was already so patched up that air was always leaking from somewhere. These guys had the innertubes and the expertise. For those with a Tokyobike, 26"x1-1.15 and 1-1.25 are what you're looking for. Don't take a 1.25"-1.5" or 1" and presta to schrader converters didn't work with the pump I was using. It's been a few years since I've been a courier but if you are one, these guys are probably the ideal go-to in the city. Also I was amazed by the guy who effortlessly put the tire back on instead of using a tire lever. I'm coming here for my bike woes from now on. read more

They screwed up my brakes and I ended up breaking 3 tyres because the brake pads where touching the tyre instead of the rim and I just missed seeing this. The first thing I ruled out was that they could have messed up the only thing that I requested from them: Fixing the brakes. Of course they took no responsibility for it. read more

Waited in front of store 15 minutes before opening. First employees arrived 6 minutes before opening. Locked the door after he entered without saying a word to me. Second employee arrived 2 minutes before opened he too locked door after entering. I guess two minutes early is a way too early for paying customers. Workers then bantering among each other without even addressing me in Spanish. Just bad vibes no customer relationship. I just wanted flats fixed on my ex wife Dahon. Came back today, was never asked if I needed help, no one was behind the counter and I couldn't tell who was a customer or who was an employee so I just went to check out the tires (it was an emergency and I needed a replacement). I spent about 10 minutes looking at the tires (still with no assistance) before I determined spending close to $80 for the exact same tire going for $40 on Amazon just wasn't worth it. I was expecting to pay a little more but not twice the price. They didn't seem to even have any cheapo tires I could get by on ($50ish was the cheapest I could find). I ended up just taking the subway home and will do without my bike for 2 days while I wait for my Amazon order. read more

These guys were so nice and helpful today! I came in with an issue where my gears were shifting when I went uphill without my changing them. They figured out it was a problem with my gear shift cable (someone had stolen a part this summer and I never replaced it since I don't use my gears) and removed the cable. As mentioned before, this bike shop is located on a random street, blocks away from Penn Station and unless you were expressly looking for it, I'm not sure you'd find it. Having said that, the shop is very clean and well laid out if on the deserted side on a Saturday afternoon. In any case, Jonathan (who really should be a Julio or Vincenzo with the thick adorable Italian accent) who helped me showed me a 51cm Jamis Ventura race and while the price tag said $1299, he said he was willing to let it go for $800. He also showed me a Bianchi out of a catalog that he said I could order for $950. The Jamis Ventura Race is vastly superior to the Bianchi but of course, I'd have to take the 51cm bike they had in stock. I ended up with a Jamis in 48cm frame from another shop and have to wonder how the fitting of the 51cm would have worked out but if and when I'm ready to upgrade bikes, I'll come back, if for nothing else than the friendly prices. read more

Went to this store three times to buy cycling shoes. Jonathan, the gentleman working the counter, assisted Zaz me each time. Gave me advice for the proper pedals to buy and then showed me multiple brand shoes and various sizes in my price range, each time I came in. I have a strange foot size(s) and he went through many options explaining fit, comfort and feel. Doctors should provide this much attention to detail! This shop was great. I stopped in today after my lock locked up on me and I broke my key. The salesperson offered to lube it up and help me get it unstuck. Everything worked out great and he even threw in a small bottle of the oil. He gave me some good advice about kryptonite replacement keys to boot. Today I got myself a gorgeous Bianchi, new bike shoes, and lots of other cool accessories for the bike at this shop. The owner was very friendly and helpful, and I seriously don't get why everyone else here had such mixed experiences. No, this is not the most beautiful bike shop I've ever been to, it is actually just a hole in the wall, no frills whatsoever, but I still felt that I was helped with enough care and expertise to walk out of here happy. I got myself a brand spanking new Dama Bianchi Infinito that was offered to me two months earlier for 2400 dollars, now marked down 30% (so for $1600,-) since the model is from 2011 (Bianchi's USA's MSRP for the Dama Bianchi Infinito is still actually $2699,-) and I am happy as a clam. If you are as crazy about Bianchi bicycles as I am, and want either the latest model of this year, or you're equally happy with an older model Bianchi, then this is your place to go. No other place in town has that kind of options available. It makes getting a kick ass racebike doable, with the prices they are offered at over here. So yes, I'm happy I went here. Let's see how the service is when I get my tune up, but I expect no issues. read more

Still, I haven't experienced the snobbery that I sometimes associate with the more gritty shops. Well stocked store, a shop in the back, more bikes upstairs (Jamis and Bianchi to name two brands) and a variety of messenger bags (Chrome and even Reload). I called them up looking for a replacement tire which they confirmed they had. Of course when I got there they didn't have the model I needed and the employee who had answered the phone said I asked for the wrong one (untrue). I just had them replace the tube so I could at least get the bike home and they were pretty quick about it. When I went to check out I was charged a bit over $13 when the price board clearly said it should be $10. It was fixed when I protested but even a presta tube change was $11 + tax so I have no idea where the $13.xx figure came from. Every time I go to a bike shop it reminds me why I order almost everything online. read more

I consider myself a pretty well prepared consumer who does his homework and research before making a purchase for something I'll keep for a few years. I scanned a lot of bike stores and reviews, however, in reading the City Bicycles reviews on yelp, it intrigued me enough I figured I had to see for myself what the deal was. Let me tell you my intuition was right and I'm glad I went to see with my own eyes. In a nutshell, this is the best bike store for anyone from beginner to mid-level, to serious experience levels in biking, especially around the city. Believe me, I've been to a bunch. A lot of them sound great on the phone, then it's "bait and switch" when you get there. Lots of over priced, fast talking hustlers out there trying to sell you what they want to push. At City Bicycles, I was treated with the utmost courtesy on my initial phone call and when I went to the store. They answered ALL my questions (and believe me, I had a few) with no rush, and with no pressure to buy at all. Since I did my homework and knew the type of bike I wanted, I went in, saw what I liked, and came back 3 hours later to ride my new bike out of the store (got a GT Traffic, which is fantastic). The service was phenomenal and every bit of attention to detail was considered in prepping the new bike. The price was fair and I couldn't be happier with my new bike-it's great. I'm happy to tell all my friends to recommend this store as they will only thank me after they've visited what's out there. Thank goodness I went to go see for myself. read more

I imagine I am not a typical bike customer. I am a 63-year old woman who lives across the street from this bike shop. It had been years since I had my own bike, and I finally walked into this shop after passing by it for a year. I was treated with respect and patience. Charlie helped me figure out what kind of bike to get, talking me down from the expensive model I was asking about, and explaining how to operate the gears and tire removal. He spent a lot of time with me, and was gracious, even though I left purchasing nothing. I came back the next day and purchased the bike. Charlie and the other incredible staff assembled the bike while I waited, and while I waited I saw how knowledgeable and generous they were with other customers, some of whom were serious bikers, as they came and went. I love my new bike and am so glad I didn't go to a big chain store. read more

Walked in here and within seconds I was taken care of. Charlie is a cool sweet guy with no pretension. I have an old Peugeot and a fancier modern bike. I travel all over the country for work and am always going to bike shops for work on both. Bike guys and gals can be the worst. Too cool for modern bikes and too hipster about the vintage ones. I had no idea until everything was said and done that the mechanic would charge me an extra $10 for each of the three items he installed. I would of done it myself if I was informed at the beginning. The Salesmen "Jhonathan" was really helpful. He measured me up with just looking at me and got me into a Jamis Hybrid. I have had the bike for a whole season now and am happy to say I love it.
