I'm really disappointed with the service I received over the phone today from employee Christina. I had called earlier in the week to ask about a quick stem swap, and the gentleman I spoke with was very helpful...he told me no appointment was necessary and it would only take about ten minutes. Since it's a busy spring weekend, I called back today just to verify they could still fit me in before I made the trip. The employee who answered, Christina, was incredibly rude from the start. She kept talking over me, claiming she "heard FRAME" when I clearly said stem, and giving me conflicting info about needing appointments days in advance. When I mentioned the conflicting information I'd received previously, she snapped and asked, "Then why are you calling?" It's shocking to be asked that when I'm simply trying to be a responsible customer and check shop capacity. While she eventually tried to backtrack and say I could come in, her initial attitude was completely unprofessional. I hope management addresses this, as the "manners" displayed were uncalled for. This is my go to bike shop near my work space in Manhattan. I commute by bike from Queens to Manhattan almost daily and have go to shops in both boroughs. I've been coming to Bicycle Habitat for a few years now, and have been meaning to write them up. The person who helped me the most here is Matt. Matt is very personable and knowledgeable. The latest big thing I had done where was an annual tune up. I have a Cannondale commuter bike that had a flat. Even though my bike was bought about 8 months ago, it needed some major cleaning, minor repair work along with fixing the flat. Mechanic addressed everything and it only took a day turnaround. My bike looked basically brand new after the clean up. The other thing I want to point out is that Matt explained everything and even fixed small details like loose bolts, etc. that I overlooked. They also have a good selection of accessories and maintenance supplies and will help answer questions. read more

I came in to check out two different bike models. The store had both in stock. Eduardo helped me out by bringing out the two models and hooking them up to a stationary wheel to let me test the ride in the store. One frame was a size smaller than I was looking to purchase, but he offered to go get the proper sized frame and set the entire thing up for me to test. He explained the differences between the two models and adjusted the saddle height on both bikes so that I could test them out in a setup that would be comfortable and appropriate. After gaining valuable insight into which model I would prefer, Eduardo pointed out that the bike was discounted until stock ran out and printed up an estimate for me if I decided I wanted to purchase. I always recommend thinking about your purchase before buying. I was looking at the trek domaine al 3 gen 3 and al gen4 4. The sales person brought out the al 4 in black and i liked it better and it was discounted. The sales person mentioned that trek was discounting bikes because new colors were coming out soon. However, upon researching online i realized she was trying to sell me the trek domaine disc bike from 2022 and not the trek domaine al gen 4. I liked the bike and i thought the sales person was knowledgeable but i'm not willing to buy a 2022 bike and im sure the salesperson knew this and thats why she didnt disclose it. read more

As I was pedaling by way from yoga at Bryant Park to Trader Joe's on West 21st Street, my back tire went completely flat. I was 30 blocks from my house, an awfully long way to push a bike. My map search bought up Bicycle Habitat--a block away. I got instant help from Kyle, who confirmed that I needed a new tire. Kyle was wonderfully warm, friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable . I waited a short time for my bike repair and enjoyed the nice vibe of this shop as customers came and went, all receiving low keyed yet excellent sales and repair advice. So a great friend recommend this place and took care of exactly what I needed. Order my bike parts for me and in days everything arrived and got it installed, I schedule for an appointment to have the new parts installed and was taken in as soon as I arrived. Top notch service and would like to thank the the staff of this place for being on top of it and taking care of my bike with swift service just have one photo of her when she was done. New parts included stages crank , ceramic speed pulley and they also config my di2 and stages crank to work one pedals moved. Ps: be mindful that the shop is busy especially during Covid and the pandemic which is still causing shops to be busy, this place applied Covid regulations and keep customers outside to be mindful that they wouldn't want to cross contamination of its guest and staff spreading anything which is great. Brought my $2k Gravel Bike for two services: 1) a standard tune-up and 2) a simple handlebar tape replacement -- both very simple When I dropped it off, my bike had metal handlebar end-caps that matched the color of the bike and screwed into the handlebars - very solid. Upon pickup, I noticed that Bicycle Habitat had taken them off.. replacing one with a cheap plastic clip-in and leaving the other side completely uncapped.. I also noticed (during a long ride after the tune-up..) that my tire wasn't spinning properly and I was feeling resistance. I dismounted and realized the brake was pressing the brake pad and restricting the movement of my wheel by adding friction. Brought it back in and the mistake was acknowledged by the mechanic. Now I'm noticing way more noise in my gears and my gears aren't shifting as smoothly as they were before my visit. Having to pay a higher-quality shop to fix these issues brought on by my visit to Bicycle Habitat. Proceed with caution.. read more

Recently got a bike fit from Matt for my touring bike on an upcoming trip from NYC to Montreal. Just got back a few days ago and the bike fit like a glove! No pain nor any issues on the ride up. Matt gave a very thoughtful and in-depth fit which required a good amount of back and forth as to what I wanted with the fit, follow-up sessions to make sure the fit was working for me (your body will take time to acclimate to a fit), and a few new parts (specifically the stem and seatpost to make my position more power-efficient, reduce the reach and put my hip angle closer to an endurance road fit). Overall, could not recommend the fit more highly, great results and a very reasonable price for such a personalized fit. read more

UPDATE: Charlie, the owner I think, called me just after posting to apologize and credit me the charges I was charged. Appreciate the gesture and quick response from them but would rather have paid and not have the permanent damage to my frame. Wish I could give a better review. Might have been a 2 or probably a 3 as I know everything is all crazy these days but simple service should not leave gouges in an alum frame. Would never trust them with my carbon. Long story short, I snapped a shifter cable and also needed a new chain so figured I'd give the LBS some biz. Asked them to also add in line barrel adjuster for the RIGHT side as the left side already had one. The right side was down at the derailure so wanted one within reach when riding on Zwift. After a week I go to pick up the bike to find they removed the already existing working left one and added a new one on the left. Nothing on the right. Good thing I wasn't needing a kidney transplant. Justine was great and helpful in resolving the issue quickly. Too bad a bike that has never been outside and only sits on a trainer has some battle scars. Can't even brag that I got them in a crash. And to the dude wearing the white jawbreakers indoors..lighten up. You ain't so special. U can take me off your waitlist for the roubaix. Max is great too btw. read more

This branch caters more towards everyday commuters rather than the highend road bikes. You'll find many quick and everyday use items, bike locks, bags, folding bikes, hybrids. A full service area in the back for tune ups and repairs. Most of the inventory is for accessories rather than bikes but its a great shop for the everyday commuter. The staff are helpful and patient and I always have great conversation with them. Alex the store manager was great in explaining their folding bikes and the store services. I reserved a bike over the phone and paid the deposit but never received a confirmation email. A few days later I called to remind them of the email but still nothing, but this time I heard that the bike I reserved was not available but a more expensive model was. This reminds of a Seinfeld episode where the rental car company takes a reservation only to say that there are no cars available. What I reserved was a bike for 650, they tried to sell me one for 950. The next week I went to the shop to try the bike anyway, thinking I could purchase it since there is a shortage of bicycles in the city. I would have sucked up the extra 300 dollars since it's my primary means of commute. When I arrived I was greeted by an extremely unfriendly lady who simply said: What do you want. Not: How can I help you today but "what do you want" with an attitude. This rudeness, I can't take. I don't know what's up with bike shops but this is unacceptable in any form of communication. I told her that I bought a bike but on the spot decided to cancel it. I'm not giving them a dime. I wish her the worst. I came in here on a Saturday afternoon needing to inflate my tires. The staff here very helpful and nice. Apparently, for the bike shop, it is next door but no one shooed me out. I asked if I could borrow an air pump and they just helped me. They even put my bike in a stand for me. I asked how much I should inflate my tires and they said inflate it up to 75 or 80. The dial on the air pump read 40, whoa, I was riding around with deflated tires. Somehow, I knew it, but I just didn't know the actual number. Gut instincts makes sense! Apparently on every tire, it tells you what you the range your tires should be inflated to. Min 50 and max 85 for my tires. Cool, I learned something new and now my tires are all set. Not exactly the friendliest or most helpful bunch here, but they do have a very decent selection of bikes for all types of riders. One advantage is the fact they carry both Trek and Specialized bikes (2 of the most popular brands), which is great since it often feels like an either-or situation with a lot of other local bike shops. In that respect, it's great to be able to say, check out a Trek Madone vs a Specialized Roubaix on site, rather than having to go to two separate bike shops for that. The store(s) here are pretty well stocked and the showroom is large and inviting. They carry a decent amount of quality accessories, though once again I must recommend that if you're looking for variety - buying this stuff online is always better unless you are dying to walk out of the shop with everything in hand (or on bike) at that particular moment. I purchased a pair of bike shoes here recently and the service was fine. The employee was helpful up to a point but seemed a bit annoyed that I took my time to get my shoes fit right. Not sure why considering it was a $200+ dollar investment and I wanted to make sure I didn't rush into it. Another annoyance is that they wanted to charge me to get my clips installed on my shoes. Really??? After I bought the shoes, I went over to Metro Bikes and they installed my clips for free. You gotta be kidding me. I just bought the damn shoes from BH, and they wanted to charge me for something that takes minutes to screw on? I would have given this place a higher score given the solid selection, but the somewhat shitty and ridiculous service nixed that. If you want good service, I can say for sure that Metro and Toga bikes all are much better than BH. read more

I called the store to find out the size of my bike for a custom bike stand back in March. The guy said he didn't know because they don't share records (strange), but he forwarded my email to the other location and copied me. He just said looking to see if the receipt is under her name and that's it. I never got a response, so I replied to the email with more detail and asked for an update and they completely ignored me. Almost two months later and they never did get back to me. A couple of weeks later, I drove the bike in to get air and a checkup before riding for the season. When the girl came out, she looked at me and said that bike is too small for you. I'm 6'0" and had the seat adjusted up high for my legs. She said it couldn't be that high because it would snap in half and she had the guy put it to the max height. I'm not a professional bike rider so I had no idea. Here's the thing, when I purchased this bike I went into the store and the guy (obviously lying) said we customize bikes for you. He picked out the bike based on my height (supposedly) and what I wanted. Clearly that was a lie since the girl took one look and said it was way too small. I am so tired of people pretending to want to help you when all they want is a sale. It's disgusting. You're getting the sale anyway. Why not take the time to actually help the customer. The customer service rep said she would ride out the season and then sell the bike and get one that actually fits me. read more

Bought my Trek 8.5DS from the SoHo store and it was time for a good cleaning and lube job. Brought it to the Chelsea shop and they were very helpful. I was looking to get an annual tune up, they inspected the bike with me and recommended new disc pads and a new tire for the rear which I agreed with. Also suggested that I may need a new chain but it wasn't urgent and didn't pressure me to change it. Finally had a chance to take the bike out for a 25 mile ride this weekend and have to say it rode better than new!!! Hal Ruzal did an excellent job on the tune up. Rides like a dream. read more

However, after reading some poor reviews on NYCeWheels, I browsed around and noticed that Bicycle Habitats not only had multiple locations, but also opened on Sundays for added convenience. The first section of the store was a bit disorganized, but I ran into Eduardo who was extremely helpful. He was patient and took the extra time to go over many options with me. Bike Habitat was one of the bike repair stops for Summer Streets, so that's why I went. They had an amazing sidewalk sale (bins of $5 bike shorts, shirts, & pumps!) and they did a really thorough job of fixing up beat-up bikes. Other bike repair stops really only offered air, but BH made sure everything was working. They helped tighten the spokes on my bent up wheels (wheels that another shop declared as not worth fixing) and got it lubed. It would've been nice to be forewarned that the lube would cost a little, but the whole experience was definitely worth it. Everyone there was super friendly even though it was mad-busy. read more

I bought a bike in April 2022, my first for 20 years - and things have changed! The staff at Bicycle Habitat - Chelsea - were not only incredibly knowledgeable, but also helpful and not condescending. Oh, and did I say that they were friendly. I have a bike shop close to me, but just never got the vibe that said "Can I really help you choose a bike?", more like "This is what I've got in stock". I went there back for the first time back in January when I suddenly needed a new helmet, and from that time on I just had to go back to check - were they really nice or was it just that I got lucky? But I've met and dealt with at least 5 staff, particularly Mark and Tony big shout out to them, and in all cases, their number one asset was their willingness to help. I met a fellow cyclist in the shop who had been visiting NY for 20 years to buy several bikes from Bicycle Habitat, and he reckoned that he had spent $60K+ with them. He was just volunteering helping out that morning in the shop. Wow. Very satisfactory experience in shopping there - and a great bike that I now have. read more

They've really been awesome. We've bought two bikes from them so far and have been super happy with the experience, selection, and prices. They were super patient and accommodating every time. I've also bought my bike back several times for tuneups since I put a lot of miles commuting on it and they've been great each time about doing what was needed and getting to back to top shape, only charging for parts (brake pads only really). We've also gotten several accessories, some needing some tricky installs. And they've been great there also, staying after hours so we can get the bike back the next morning. And they've been helpful with advice for my own installs. Generally seems like good bike people work here, not just a random sales job for them.
