TLDR: asked for a simple tire tube replacement, left with damaged carbon rims…read more I usually do my repairs myself, but didn't have any tools today, so I figured a tire tube replacement is a pretty dead simple job that any bike shop can handle. I walked into Enoch's shop last week, and he quoted me $15 and 10 minutes, and I said sure. As the service continued, I became progressively more apprehensive, but was too polite to tell him "Sorry, I don't trust you anymore. Can we stop?" 1. He clamped my titanium bike on the seattube. One should always clamp on the seatpost, so if any crush damage occurs, it would be easily replaceable. Luckily there was no damage here, but he would have crushed a carbon fiber frame. 2. Unluckily for me, I have carbon fiber wheels. He used a steel vise grip to pull the tire off the rim... I've never had to use anything other than plastic tire levers to get my tire off. This caused dent damage on my flawless carbon rim, as you can see in the attached photo (I did not know this damage occurred until after I already left the shop). I do not know if the damage is just cosmetic or structural, and I will need to contact the manufacturer. 3. When he reattached the wheel to the bicycle, he rested the chain not on the cog, but past the cog on the rear axle, then stretched my rear triangle to handle the extra width, then tightened it down (this I also did not realize until after I had left). This is basic, and so obvious. If he had simply turned the pedal at all, he would see that it's not driving the wheel... When I discovered this, I ran home to get my multitool to relieve the tension on my frame and set it properly. Luckily this does not seem to be permanent damage, as the back wheel still seems aligned properly. If I had a carbon frame, he would have snapped it. At the end he said "I'll need to charge you more, $20, because this took a long time and was very hard". So I came in for a tire tube repair, and left with potentially hundreds of dollars in damage (still awaiting manufacturer reply if the rim is unsafe to ride or not). I made a mistake of bringing something nice here, don't make the same mistake yourself.

I had previously tried getting a bike from the Specialized store on the UWS and while they were friendly, their service times left a lot to be desired. Same goes for Hilltop in Williamsburg (also owned by Specialized) - those guys treated me like I was a sale/noob and really couldn't have cared less about figuring out what was "right" for me given I wasn't going to be buying a bike from them. Nice guys, but once again - backed up for weeks on the service side of things. Back to Bicycle Habitat - Matt and the team were awesome. All in all spent over an hour in the shop both chatting with the guys and getting set up with the new bike. Where do I begin. At first glance I thought this shop was nice and friendly and close to home. I bought an inner tube from this guy who works there. He was pretty cool. A lot of people whom I met went there before thought otherwise. But they didn't seem so bad. I've read the comments on this site as well, and it all sees pretty legit. Well back to my situation. I bought the tube and brought it back home. As an avid biker, I normally check the tube before putting it together with my tire and on my rim. Just so I don't have to go through the trouble of installing and uninstalling the whole setup. So I gave it a few pump and then realize that air was leaking. Man the product was defective!!! But I figure I just bring it back to "dah" shop and have it replaced or fixed. The next morning I stopped by the shop and told the guy who sold it to me that there was a problem with the tube. He took the box and took out the tube to check it. He said I must've pinched it, but I told him that I didn't even install it. He gave it a few pump and realized that air was leaking. That's when he said "It's pinched!" He was insinuating that I had pinched the tube and returned a product that I have ruined. So he turns back and heads behind the curtain. He grabbed something and just threw it at me. Not even a heads up or acknowledgment that he was going to give me a new tube. So after he chucked it at me, I said thanks man. His reply was "whatever man." I looked at him and said, excuse me? I tried to explain again, but he just ignored me and went back to his work. Is this what customer service is all about? An ugly stint reply just because the product was defective. I mean, I wasn't even giving him a hard time when I stepped inside the store. He has definitely lost my business. Good luck running a business with that kind of attitude towards customers. read more

I've been frequenting dah shop literally since it opened. I even helped the owner move some stuff off the sidewalk while moving in. I hadn't been to the shop in a few years since I moved out of the neighborhood and I recently stopped in for some minor issues. The owner was nice, as a person but seemed like he could care less that I was a customer. Beyond the fact that a simple repair took a long time, I now am going to a local bike shop to fix the work they did on my bike. It was a simple job, swapping out the back break pads and they either gave me a pair that does not fit on my bike, or did not check their work. I am not saying this is the worst bike store ever, but they need to step up their game and decide if they are a bike shop that services customers or a hang out spot with cool apparel that fixes bikes when their in the mood or have time. I believe in this day of covid, people don't have a lot of money and want to have faith that businesses they are working with are doing their best job. I support small business band I think dah shop has to decide what it is, who they want to serve and how they want to serve them. Because until it does, I'm taking my bike somewhere else read more
