Bicycles NYC is huge. It's got everything you could imagine for serious bicycle riders. They were hard at work doing repairs and putting out stock when I was there today. I talked to one employee that told me that currently there's a bicycle shortage. You would never know by the bicycles in this store. I'm here for my out of town visitor's pleasure. They may be pricey but they have quality merchandise. My bicycle riding days may be over but my friends still ride. If you are visiting NYC, or live nearby and are a bicycle enthusiast, I suggest you visit this clean, well stocked, fun decor store. It's wheelchair accessible too. First of all, many thanks to Jeff and Shane who took care of my refund request promptly. I wasn't a happy camper when my bike got a second flat tire soon after I left the shop; I had to roll the bike all the way to the West End and got pissed when I found two pieces of glasses lodged in my tire. Perhaps they missed it; or it was my unlucky day--who knows. I emailed the shop with photos. Jeff responded right away offering a full refund. This was not my first time at this shop, so I know the quality work they generally do. What I really appreciate is their attitude. This place does good, quick work. I got fresh tires recently and it took about 10 minutes tops for me to be in and out of there. The only reason it gets 4 instead of 5 stars is because it's pretty pricey in general. I spent about $150 for two new tires and 1 new tube. I'm from the jersey shore and prices like this would be completely unheard of there - but I get that this is NYC and everything, including bike shops, cost more here so this is still a fine place to bring a bike in the neighborhood. read more

Awesome bike shop in the heart of the Upper East Side! I treat my bike like my baby (have a Cervelo P2 di2 triathlon bike) so I'm always very hesitant to let it out of my sight. I needed to tune my bike up this April before the official open of the bike season. I really appreciated that the staff were extremely knowledgeable about bikes- even triathlon bikes which is sometimes hit or miss with bike shops in the city. They didn't try to up-sell me on the most expensive tune up package but instead suggested a mid-range tune up package based on how old my bike was and the last time I got it serviced. The best thing about this shop is that they will text you when your bike is available for pickup. It's been about two months since I got my bike tuned and it's running perfectly! I wandered into Bicycles NYC A few weeks prior to moving from Los Angeles (mountain-bike heaven) to New York (bike-commuter hell), and began exploring the notion of a folding bike as the best solution to feeding my bike addiction. Sonia greeted me, asked me questions, pointed out the finer points of the Brompton and Tern bikes and let me test drive a couple. When I got back, from the ride, she asked how I liked them - No pressure, no sales pitch - it was more of a conversation between a couple of bike nuts, ranging from the kinds of riding we did to the wide array of choices (and build quality) among models across the folding-bike market. Turns out that while the Brompton is lighter, and more legendary, it's also a more expensive line and the max 16-inch wheel size felt too skittish, like a clown bike, while the Tern's 20-inch wheels and bigger geometry felt like something I could ride all day long. Sonia walked me through Tern's online catalog, answering every question. So, I resolved to buy a Tern - from this shop - and when I moved here a couple weeks ago and wavered between the Verge S8I and the much-cheaper Link, Sonia gave me pros and cons - and again, zero pressure. I finally decided to invest in the S8i because of the silent, low-hassle, no-grease belt drive and internal shifter, and the shop's mechanic set me up within a few hours of taking shipment, even making some last-minute tweaks and mounting a seat post-lock even though it was closing time. I've already ridden my new bike up and down Manhattan at night and across Brooklyn in the rain and I'm, truly, fcking thrilled with the build and ride quality and the shop's staff and service. I brought my Brompton superlight in for an overhaul but the tech routed the brake and shift cables so that it could not fold. The mechanic on duty fixed the problem the following day but it took several hours and two trips to the store. Be aware that at least one of their mechanics is not qualified to work on Brompton bikes. Also, they don't have spare parts so you are better off going elsewhere until they have the part you need in stock. That said, I appreciate that the mechanic tried to explain that he was not the person that routed the cables incorrectly, and there were other Bromptons for sale so that he could study the proper cabling paths. I hope they will be able to competently service Brompton bikes someday. I've been a customer since it was Larry and Jeff's, commuting by bicycle to work since 1980. read more

Strongly recommend avoiding this shop. I brought my 2x10 speed Shimano 105 Trek road bike to them a week ago because the derailleur's indexing was off and the shifting was skipping. However, when I got the bike back, I couldn't drop from my large chain ring to my little chain ring while in any of my *five* highest cassette gears. I brought it back to them pretty upset and they just told me to deal with it, and that using any of those *five* higher gears while in the little chain ring was cross chaining. Cross chaining is a real issue, but usually only in the one or two highest gears while in the little chain ring. I asked them to please fix it, and they gave it back to me even more messed up. The gears skipped all over the place while doing a casual central park lap. Incredibly frustrated, I finally brought the bike to Trek Upper East Side. They took care of it in no time and everything is working beautifully. I cannot emphasize enough how strongly I recommend avoiding this shop. They have no idea what they're doing and terrible customer service. read more

A search revealed some English mechanic who pointed out how carbon wheels are Often unbalanced and that may be why my cornering and descending felt so unstable. Especially with valve extenders. And I was not busting down this hilly course nor diving into corners and I had done exact course on older DT wheels without incident. This place is amazing! I really wanted a bike to help me get some fresh air and exercise during COVID lockdown. I emailed 4 bike shops to see if any would be willing to deliver the bike, and Bicycles NYC emailed me back within 10 MINUTES to let me know that they were checking if possible. Within a few hours, they confirmed they could deliver. I was blown away - mind you this was Saturday night at 8:30 PM and I also live about 50 blocks away. What a great experience with Bicycle NYC. I walked our electric bike almost forty blocks just so they could repair a flat tire and it was totally worth it. I originally emailed with Jeff to make sure they could do the repair and got prompt replies reassuring me. The drop off was quick. I believe Sam took the bike and told me I could pick it back up in a couple of hours. In about 45 minutes after dropping off the bike, I received a text saying the bike was ready. Picking up the bike was just as easy as dropping it off. I was in and out in no time and the bike is back on the streets. I'm really happy with the service and the turnaround time and the professionalism of the two individuals at the shop when I was there. I have no idea how to fix anything on a bike, flat tires included and our electric bike cost a lot of money so I was really concerned with who I dropped it off to. Bicycle NYC was a lot further away than the local repair shops but it was worth bringing my bike to. They have a work space for repairs and a ramp to bring your bike down. And you can't go wrong when they tell you "I do this for a living, I got you." I'm hoping we won't run into any issues with our bike again any time soon but if we do, this is the first place I'll think of for bringing the bike to. Thanks for the help Bicylce NYC! Went to Bicycles NYC to get a saddle. When I got to the register to pay for the saddle which was $220 plus tax I found out I needed to pay an extra $250 just for Sam's time to show and help me to try different saddles. Be aware of that! Then after a month, I asked if I can exchange it since it was not working for me, and they said no. The saddle ended up being too wide. read more

Just moved to NYC and needed to service my bike. These guys are the best! Will now be my go to place for service and parts. I had been riding my bike with problematic gears, squeaky brakes, and was not sure about the condition of my old tires. I left the bike with them with a long list of items to be checked and said that if they felt something needed replacement they could go ahead and replace. The bike was ready on promised day . They only replaced what was necessary which was only one item. They adjusted and did what needed to be done. I took my bike to the park and rode it for 90 minutes- it was like riding a brand new bike!! They did an awesome job! Our family was visiting NY with our 7 year old and within half a day found that all of the walking we had planned was too much for our little guy. We were walking up 5th avenue towards the Met and noticed local families with cute and colorful Micro Maxi scooters. Our son was used to riding a Razor at home and I thought that maybe if we had a scooter for our son, he would be happier and keep up with our busy schedule and pace. We googled the scooter brand and found this shop was a 4 minute walk from where we were. We decided to call and they said they did indeed sell them and many colors to choose from. The guy who helped us was so nice! He went and grabbed a box from the back and didn't even hesitate to put the scooter together for us. Our son even chose a bell for the scooter and the gentleman put it on for him. The whole transaction took about 10 minutes and we were off. So glad I found this bike shop! I went to several bike shops on my recent quest to buy an e-bike for commuting during the pandemic, and this shop was by far the best. They introduced me to my beloved new e-bike which I had never seen anywhere else or encountered in my online e-bike research (Charge City - it's awesome and reasonably priced for an e-bike). When I got a flat tire, they fixed it for me as I waited even though they were busy, and for a really reasonable price. They also mounted a mirror and portable bike pump onto my bike for me on the spot when I bought those accessories from them (which sell for the same price or more on Amazon, but don't include someone installing them for you!). Honestly, not the most pleasant experience. I purposely went to the shop to purchase pedals and to get my cleats properly mounted. I wasn't thrilled about paying roughly a 40% markup for purchasing at a brick and mortar store compared to buying online, but I understand this is New York and everything is overpriced. After a ride I went to adjust the cleat positioning only to realize that they did not install a washer on one of my cleats. I'm glad I noticed this and that I did not have an issue 30 miles from my house, but seriously how could someone miss that there are 3 washers in the box and that all three need to be mounted. I went to the store with my receipt and without the shoe, and explained that I was missing a washer and felt belittled when explaining what I needed. The exact quote from the person that helped me was "I'm going to take your word on this, I don't believe one of my guys would make this mistake." I'm sooo sorry for the inconvenience that I paid your ridiculous in store price only to come back and need a part which I should have originally been provided with. Pretty sure a steel washer would cost the shop about .10 cents to replace, but he made me feel like I was asking for a kidney. Thanks, but no thanks. read more

Alright so here's an honest to God review. NYC bicycle shops universally suck at selling kid's bikes. Just throw them on something pseudo approximately and ring up the sale. Makes total sense because they'd rather deal with me on a $10K carbon super bike than a $300 kid's bike. Here's the thing though ... guys like me that buy and ride $10K sub-14 lb. carbon wonder bikes also have children I'm trying to raise as cyclists (you know, next generation of customers). The guys / gals here really took my 7 year old seriously. She didn't like the color, OK, they tried to see what they could special order. When she was OK with stock at their warehouse, they got it the same day and when we went to pick it up, apparently her legs are too long. So, we try a 24" bike but that stretched her torso too much. And remember, I had already paid for the bike and they got it and assembled it. So they got her a new post and installed it. They got her all freakin' dialed in with a stock Spesh. She's rippin' it with her new bike ... looks much more comfortable! Best $350 I've ever spent for her. Thanks so much guys / gals for taking MY KID seriously and treating her like the buyer and user. I'll be back to your shop with my kid's needs even though Bicycle Habitat is so much closer to me. Taking a stairs down from the sidewalk is a walk to hell to this sub sidewalk bike shop. Overpriced on every bike item and not very friendly customer service. Came in for a basic bike part and it seemed like i the customer was bothering the store and they wouldn't even bat a eye contact with me. After inquiring about the bike part i wanted to purchase the guy behind the register pawns me off to someone else who just asked the same guy to grab it off the wall. A sure sign that customer service is dead within these catacombs. Even the mechanics are unfriendly. Not even a excuse me while trying to pass but just a slight nudge. Not to mention items here are way overpriced and marked up at least 15%. Though i needed the item quickly and as a emergency i had to relinquish to purchase it here since it was the only shop in town that had it. Would i steer friends here, no, would i come back, no. Emergency parts next time? I'm just going to have to bite down and wait patiently at another establishment. read more
