I was visiting NYC from Los Angeles and rented a couple of bicycles from Kickstand to ride around the city. VERY Hard working, bicycle loving folks operate this shop. Before heading out on the rental, they put it up on the stand and adjusted the brakes, derailleurs, trued the wheels, and pumped the tires so that I could have a great successful ride all over the city from the shop south to the Battery Park, then up the West side to the GW Bridge and back through Central Park with no mechanical problems. They gave me a U-Lock no extra charge and offered a Helmet, but I travel with my own. An all day rental from Eleven AM to 6 PM was $25.00 plus tax. They seem to dispense repairs fast with no drama here. People come with their bikes I saw, tell them what the problem is, and they fix it. Where I am from you make an appointment, and like at the doctor, they don't fix it unless you pay to have a full exam first to see what else is wrong and it turns expensive fast. Really appreciate Ben and Andrea and Kickstand Bicycles (they are the shop haha ). As others have said they take their time with you, don't upsell, or talk down to you. I have been getting my (14 year old) bike tuned up and taken care of here for at least 3/4 years. Parts replaced, upgraded etc. Always feel welcome and comfortable going in and telling them my bike woes. Or asking what the deal is with something bike related getting clear explanations and getting bike smarter in the process. I just encountered my first flat ever! I think it's been 20 years of riding and never had to deal with this situation. Ben walked me through how to change and why it happened (knowing is important). I'm ready to ride and I have Kickstand Bicycles to thank for keeping me going. Thank you Ben and Andrea. TLDR; I recommend Kickstand bicycles! read more

Came in near closing with a flat and didn't have a tube. They got me squared away. Reasonable price and super nice!

Bought a used bike that made click clackity noises when I changed gears so I brought it to Kickstand for a tune-up because safety is important. Ben identified the issue with the chain immediately and suggested that I change it. It was affordable and any repairs are included in the tune up. When I picked it up, Ben went over with me the different parts of the bike and that it was in good health and issues were resolved. While I was at it, I also picked up some lights for the bike and they offered many tiers of options. The service here was very good and seems like it is frequented by heavy bike riders. I called the store as I needed a crank puller to make a repair on a spin bike. The store was not satisfied with just telling me they had one in stock, the guy went online to look at the spin bike to make sure he sold me the right tool! When I stopped in to pick it up he took the time to explain and demonstrate how to use it! If they deliver that level of service over a $15 tool I can't imagine what it must be like to bring my bike there! read more

Wow. I called the shop. The lady said come By at lunch time and by the time I leave from work the bike could be ready. I passed by the shop at lunch, and the mechanic was busy working on a bike and listened to what I had to say but took no initiative to do any work on it . After he told me my bearings were messed up, I asked him if he could fix it but he said yes but it would be a 3 week wait. I don't have time for this. And worst- his wife needs to be on the same page as him. read more

Came here to buy some much needed gear and I got exactly what I was looking for. First and foremost, let me just put it out there that this place is super busy. I was in there for max twenty- thirty minutes and I think about ten people were in and out of the shop (primarily to pick up a fixed bike or purchase small needed parts like me). I don't know the name of who helped me but she was wearing glasses and was super helpful. I picked up the chain and helmet that I needed and yes, it wasn't cheap BUT they do carry the best brands. On top of that, me being me, I quickly checked the prices online- on Amazon, both the chain and helmet were significantly more expensive ($65+ versus the $54 they had the chain for). Definitely stop by if you need a bike or any gear for it! read more

I finally got a bike(YAY!) and needed a helmet, of course. I found this place with my yelp app, and i was super excited that it was only a few blocks from me. I rode my sweet new bike to the shop and they welcomed me in, and showed me right to the helmet wall. Its a decent collection of helmets. I found one I thought I really liked, then spotted a super sweet one behind the counter. I asked the guy about it, and he told me its his wife's helmet. Kickstand happens to be located on the route of my cross town bike commute on 49th street. I've stopped there when my break suddenly froze up at 10am one Tuesday. Luckily, there was no one waiting, so the owner took a look at it himself and fixed it in 10 minutes. I like this place. It's small and obviously run by the owners who appreciate your business. As someone that is not a "biker" I bought a cheap bicycle just for fun and exercise from Walmart. The bike arrived damaged, I was able to bring it over to kickstand they fixed the issue and assisted with making the brakes work as there was an issue with those as well and made me feel it was safe to ride.They were very friendly and I got the bike back in about 24 hours. Tiny bike shop - but what they lack in size, they certainly make up for in customer service. My BF gets free maintenance elsewhere, but brings his bike here because of the convenience of location and trustworthy service. There have been times when the owners have not even charged him/accepted tips! And they always carefully walk him through the issues/the work they did, despite having several customers waiting out the door (literally) - toldja, it's small :). I've been to dozens of bike ships in my two decades of being a bike person and this is the best bike shop for repairs. The mechanic is clearly super smart and knowledgeable but has the most down to earth demeanor. I came in looking for cones and bearings for my rear hub and an 11mm Allen wrench. He knew exactly what I was doing and exactly what trouble I would have. Even advised me against getting the Allen wrench because I didn't really need it. read more

I'm lucky this place was here. Had a puncture flat on my commuter, which is very unusual. Looked up places nearby, and as luck would have it, Kickstand was a block away. I showed up at what I'm pretty sure was the exact moment that they officially close (7pm), but a gentleman took my case anyways. He replaced my tube, took a nearly souvenir-worthy rusty nail out of the old one, and had me out of there in 10 minutes, for $17.
