She is incredibly knowledgeable and provided a very thorough eye examination and check-up of my eye health. I even learned new things about my eyes! If you would be annoyed by a hit-and-run, avoid this store! The clerk caused a thousand dollars' worth of damage and then pretended like he had nothing to do with it. I was about to file a police report. My husband needed to have lenses switched between 2 pairs of glasses, and Montana Optometry said that they would do it. We brought the 2 frames in and came back 30 minutes later. The desk clerk polished them and handed them to my husband, who put them on without looking at them. When we got home, he took them off and immediately noticed significant damage to both lenses. I called the store asking what had happened and if I should send pictures, but I was told to just see the manager on Monday. On Monday, the manager of Montana Optometry, David, said repeatedly that there was no way that the lenses could have been damaged in the manner which they were from changing the lenses. After spending 10 minutes hearing that there was no way that the lenses could have been damaged through this, I fully agreed with David that the normal process of lens exchange could not have caused the severe damage that did occur. I came to the conclusion that the normal process had not been followed, but David did not agree. I left the store being told that the lenses would not be replaced. Later, David called me and said that he was going to replace the lenses. He would not tell me what he discovered had actually happened, but he did say that the lenses were not changed in the normal manner. I completely understand that people make mistakes. I have no problem with mistakes. If I get an explanation and an apology, I will immediately forgive almost anything. Instead, the clerk denied that he caused the damage and then fabricated a story about how I had said that the glasses had been damaged by a fall, and that probably damaged the lenses as well. (I walked into the store in the middle of him reciting this story to David, but he had his back to me so I don't think he knew I was there. The glasses were not damaged from a fall and he knew that.) However, I do realize that the manager had no way of knowing that this new employee was doing this. What really got to be me was that a second employee also fabricated a story to make me look bad. I had called the store immediately and offered to send pictures to them but was told not to. When I went to the store on Monday, the manager asked why I had refused to send pictures earlier. He said the employee I spoke to on the phone had told him that they had asked for pictures, but I wouldn't send them. When a store has 2 employees who lie about what actually happened, it makes me think that this was not just 1 bad apple, but rather a culture of cheating customers. It is because there were 2 untruthful employees that I am so upset with the store. Clearly, this store has a problem with their employees acting dishonestly. If this is the culture of this store, it would be best to avoid it, or you might end up scammed. read more

I've been here twice in seven years and have had a fantastic experience. Recently my partner had made an appointment for a place closer to home, and they really messed up my prescription. I came back to Montana Optometry and Dr. Manavi fixed the issue immediately. She performs all the tests herself, from old school to the latest technology she runs the full gamut. She even remembered me and I'd only seen her once seven years ago! They are a lovely boutique operation and though I did not purchase my glasses from them they seem to have a great selection. They take VSP, are easy to make an appointment with (though you may have to wait a bit) and explain everything very clearly. I recommend wholeheartedly. read more

It feels weird to say this, but Montana Optometry is one of Santa Monica's best hidden gems. It is SO hard to find good optometrists, and even after moving to the valley I will drive back here for annual exams and any other related needs. I've seen both doctors here (Dr. Manavi-Makhani and Dr. Yahoudai), and they were equally wonderful, thorough, and patient. Stephanie at the front desk also went above and beyond helping me track down hard-to-find contact lenses, and kept me informed every step of the way. This place is truly special. This place is wonderful. When I first went I thought things were a little expensive, although I now know that it is worth every penny. They do carry mostly high end frames as you would expect from their location. The service is beyond exemplary - I have now purchased 3 pairs of glasses from them and due to my own disorganization I created some chaos about lenses and frames. They ended up making a second set of lenses for each of them at no charge and they were very kind and graceful about what was clearly my changing my mind. Once I received the last pair they offered to remake one set of the transition lenses yet again (at no charge) because some little bit of technology had improved with the speed of the darkening of the lenses. It was a minor improvement although I'm sure it wasn't a minor cost to remake them. I will never purchase glasses or eyewear products anywhere else. read more

This is a long overdue review for my first pair of glasses, which I got a year ago. Since this was my first pair, I don't have any other optometrists to compare them to. But I do know quality service when I see it. And Montana Optometry more than earned this 5-star review. I went with progressive lenses, and when I wasn't happy with my first set (the prescription part of the lenses started a bit too low), they recommended the correct solution and replaced the lenses at no cost. And when the new lenses weren't a 100% fit for my frames (they were super close but were off by just a tiny bit), they hand-ground the lenses to a perfect fit as I waited. And speaking of frames, they quickly found the perfect frames for my face that I still love a year later. Through it all, the one thing that really stood out to me was that they really truly care. I was referred to Montana Optometry by my insurance company. I am very disappointed with them! It is taking them almost 3 weeks to do my lenses! These are just regular transition prescription glasses. Other places get them done 3-7 days! I am not even sure about the quality of their work and how they are going to come out. I broke my frames and they found another frame from a different brand, that the lenses fit perfectly in so I didn't have to order new lenses. David and his team are the best. I've been going to Montana Optometry for 6 years now, but I think this will be my last visit. I've had excellent visits with Dr. Manavi and love the long-term staff there, but I didn't realize they added a new doctor and switched me to her without saying anything. The new doctor told me I have an astigmatism, which I've never had before, and everything seemed very rushed. I also bought eye drops from them while in office for $20 and made a comment that it seemed expensive. I later found the same drops online for $12. I happened to mention this when I saw them again in person, and they got very very defensive about. Anyway, not that this review matters - losing a patient might help with how busy they seem now. read more

Glasses gave me a rash and headaches the whole year. Frames are very very expensive for what you get. The light filter I was pushed into getting for my glasses gave me insane headaches and dizzy spells while driving. I told them I dont need it but a lady told me it is a must. So this year I gone to my original Optometrist who got it right and frames were cheaper for an amazing Italian brand. Same street. Montana Optometry is not bad. But I feel like I was sold glasses that I did not need and they did not guide me in the correct direction. So from 5 stars down to 4. Again people are nice. Tests are good. I haven't written a review in over 10 years but using my world-famous FAQ format... I'm back in the game for this one review. Lol. **FAQ** Q: Why review now? A: Because I had to get new eyes and the concept of "seeing" is pretty important to me. So this spot was review-worthy; Frankly, it's worth more than writing a review on, like, the one time I had a bad experience with Food Place. Q: How was the Eye Doc? A: Dr. Manavi (spelling?) was great. The whole comprehensive eye exam process was pretty quick and chill. Aside from my eyeballs being unable to focus properly w/o corrective lenses, my eyeballs are pretty healthy according to Dr. Manavi. Just for comparison, I asked what fucked-up eyeballs look like. And she had database ready to go to show me all sorts of fucked-up eyeball issues (i.e. glaucoma, cataracts, burst vessels, etc). It was a fun convo; I'll bet we could've talked for another hour on fucked-up eyes. Here's hoping that I don't end up in that database. Lol. Q: How was the rest of the crew? A: Awesome. Zoë, I only talked to on the phone. She was great. David and Stephanie helped me find the right frames for my new eyes. And even put up with my nitpicky adjustments (Note: Be a dick about your adjustments; It's important). I got a friendly text message reminding me about appointments. Pretty well-organized crew overall. Q: OK, I get it. They're great. But it comes at a cost, right? A: I mean, yah. Let's not fool ourselves. This ain't LensCrafters or Big Box Store Optometry. This shop is on Montana Ave in Santa Monica. So, yah, shit is expensive. Let's do some real-talk calculations: * I got new frames w/ my new prescription. * I got my old frames w/ my new prescription. * I got my sunglasses w/ my new prescription. * So, the way I see (pun-intended) it... that's four distinct things that I got. (1) new frames, (2) w/ new lenses, (3) new lenses for old frames, (4) new lenses for existing sunglasses. * I think I spent about $1,000 for all that. * Which breaks down to about $250 per "thing." * (I subtracted exam cost because if you have halfway decent insurance, it won't cost that much) It seems like a lot but think about it... for a boutique optometry spot? That's actually a pretty great value. (I didn't haggle but I get the feeling that they'd work with you on a price for something. Let me know if that actually works. Lol). And, again, with the strong staff, there's that added value too. Also, while I don't like using "cute" for a small business that takes themselves seriously... the shop itself is "cute" and in a "cute" part of town if you're into that sort of thing. Q: They probably tried to upsell you on shit, amirite? A: Listen, at the end of the day, an optometry spot is a blend of medicine and retail. We've established that the doctor/medicine-side is awesome. And on the other side is the retail aspect. So, yah, I'm sure there's some upselling involved. Let's not be naive about that. But I *never* got the feeling that they were aggressively steering me towards more expensive and/or high-margin shit. At the end of the day, it's your eyes so you might as well get the best that you possibly can. Again, the staff is super chill, really awesome, very laid back. Not very pushy at all and accommodating to your needs. And I get the impression that they are truly looking out for your best interests. Q: At the end of that day, was it worth it? A: To me? Yah. I hadn't had a significant change in my eyes for while until recently so when it came time to get new eyes? I didn't mind paying up for it. Listen, if you're grinding away at a minimum wage job? More power to you. But this probably isn't the place for you. If you're lucky enough to be getting decent wages in the time of the pandemic? Support a small business. Q: It's 2020, are they being safe with all that Covid shit floating around? A: Absolutely. They check temperatures, the entire staff is wearing masks, they require their clients to wear masks, they set-up appointments so there aren't too many people in their "cute" shop and there's some nice hand sanitizer there. Which reminds me I have to ask where they get that hand sanitizer because it smells good and feels great. (Boy, I really hope that this part of the review ages poorly real soon). Q: Are they Nazis about it? A: Nah, the staff all wear masks, they offer hand sanitizer but they're not aggressive about it. The first time I went they checked my temp but not the subsequent times I picked up. I obviously went with a mask. I get the feeling they trust their clientele to keep them safe; And I feel that they are safe too. So when they are touching your glasses/face/head for adjustments, you don't have to worry. They respect your health; you respect them. Oh and when I picked up? There was a cleaning crew doing their thing. So cleanliness seems like a big priority for Montana Optometry. read more

Brought a pair of Prada glasses in which had a broken nose pad. The staff immediately went to work on it and repaired within 5 min. For very little to no cost. My husband and I have been long-term customers of Montana Optometry and have had nothing but good experiences with them every time. But this time, I became very compelled to write this review because David went above and beyond to prepare my glasses on short notice and a few hours before my trip to Canada. What happened was that I was pushing the new prescription off until six days before my trip when I realized the old lenses were not only insufficient to see but also the coating was coming off. I was pretty sure I could not get new high-quality lenses based on a new prescription, as these things typically take at least 2 weeks to be sent to the lab and back. Nevertheless, I tried my luck and saw David at Mantanan Optometry. He decided to order the new lenses in the store (instead of sending the glasses to the lab) and shape them himself so that I could pick them up before my trip. And guess what? He delivered as he promised. What a big difference! I am very thankful to him for giving me a new pair of eyes to see clearly during my trip and after, which was crucial. I appreciate his professionalism and customer care. He is an essential part of Montana Optometry and, IMO, the main reason the store runs as fluidly as it does. read more

After my terrible experience at this shop, I went to the reviews to see if others had similar issues and low and behold there are several reviews indicating that a middle aged woman on the staff can be rude and dismissive. The shop is tiny so I assume there's only one of these nasty ladies employed there. She looked right at me and didn't speak when I walked in. As mentioned, its super small so she saw me. after about 5 minutes, I moved back to her direct sight line and she again looked at me and looked back down and spoke to another customer. after she moved away from that customer, I asked her if they carried a specific brand. The people who work here make all the difference. Now that I've had to use eyeglasses for ten years, I can say that of the more than a dozen places I've gone for help with my eyesight, this is the place I've enjoyed the most, the place that filled me with the most confidence, and cared best for me. And I wasn't even their patient or past customer. The first time I went there by chance as I waited for a table to open up down the street. I loved the selection of frames. The store was well-kept. I had some minutes to look around and Zoe helped me try on a couple frames. I told them about my problem feeling I had to tilt my glasses to read more comfortably. David took one good look at my face with glasses on and told me I'd likely need split seg heights. I didn't know what that was but he patiently explained and it made sense. Unfortunately, I had to wait to get new glasses until my insurance could cover it. That was a year ago. Today, after eating down the street, I went in again because I'd been having trouble with a new prescription and glasses. Same trouble as before, new glasses. I asked for David but Reyna was there to help me as patiently and kindly as I could ever ask for. She said what David had told me still made sense and she could see it too. She helped try to adjust my current glasses so I wouldn't have to go back to the optometrist I'd gotten them from for adjustments. (I really don't like the place, as the optometrist and optician didn't listen to me one bit and didn't fix my problem...so impatient and forceful) I ended up getting advice on how to interact with the optometrist who gave me my current glasses, and information that could help me speak more confidently about what I need. They didn't have to help me like they did, but they may have been the only ones to help me truly. As I learned about my issues, my wife happened across a pair of glasses she loved and finally felt comfortable with. She'd been searching for ages for something that fit her cheeks and nose right. That's a decades long search. I needed to use insurance to get my eyewear, but this shop isn't with my provider network, so I hesitate because glasses can be quite expensive. But if they're in your network, and/or you need someone who will be attentive and patient and kind as you figure out the right glasses for you...this place definitely has great people and selection. Dealing with the whole team at Montana Optometry was a welcome relief after some other past experiences with other health care professionals. From David to Dr. Manavi, and everyone in between, I could tell they were genuinely concerned with helping me with my situation as it pertains to my eye sight (you only get one pair of eyes) and I did not feel pressured or marginalized in any way. I had written a negative review earlier but they came thru and did a great job on my eyeglass lenses.

I brought my daughter here, then I made an appointment for myself. I was running late and called to let them know. I arrived 12 minutes late. And waited in the waiting room for 5 minutes while 2 receptionists were on the phone. After waiting with no acknowledgement, they told me the doctor stepped out and couldn't see me because I was late. When I arrived, the doctor wasn't even there. This is absurd. No respect for my time. The receptionists were extremely rude. I drove from Beverly Hills. They could have told me when I called that I should reschedule instead of having me drive 30 minutes to tell me the doctor stepped out and they could no longer see me. None of this makes sense. Zero stars, so rude. Truly horrible business protocol. read more

I came here looking for a new set of glasses before the pandemic. They have a lot of high-end and hard to find brands, like Jacques Marie Maje (which I strongly recommend). Although they didn't have what I was looking for, their staff was extremely friendly and patient in helping me try on everything imaginable at their store. Dealing with them felt more like trying on glasses with a couple friends, rather than the sometimes awkward (or pushy) interaction you can have at other places. When I read the wonderful reviews for Montana Optometry, I decided to check it out. When I walked inside I was warmly greeted and felt like I was a welcome guest in someone's home. David, listened intently and patiently as I shared my numerous eye issues. I had a long list of specifications and had already been to several shops. It felt like I was sitting across from a friend. When I finished, that's when the magic began. He proceeded to show me one beautiful frame after the next. While I was there, I saw a constant flow of people but I never felt rushed or hurried. From the conversations I overheard, I knew they were there because they liked the establishment, the owner, the employees, and the beautiful choices! I took pictures to share with my sister and came back the next morning to order my glasses. When we left, I told her I will never go anywhere else. I want to share my amazing experience with all my friends and family, and everyone reading this review. As consumers, we can choose to go anywhere.
