My recent experience at Sunny Optometry was an utter nightmare. First, I will say that I came here to update my contacts prescription years ago, and that appointment went fine despite the fact that it was more expensive than I expected - I agree with the reviews that say they tend to upcharge and inflate the bill with services insurance doesn't cover. However, my latest experience was actually awful. I decided to bring in my beloved Lindberg frames I've had for years so I could get the lenses updated. I didn't mind paying a little extra for the boutique experience - I thought I could trust this small office to take each client seriously and treat my frames with respect. I ended up paying around $350 total out of pocket for the exam and new lenses, and I was told it would take around 2 weeks for the job to be ready. After week 3, I started getting worried. I hadn't heard back anything at all, so I started to call at least twice a week to check in after that. Each time they were polite and friendly, and promised they would get back to me with updates by the end of xyz day, but then they would often just forget to call me back. It seemed like no one was pushing my job forward. This went on for 8 weeks! By the end of it, I was at the end of my rope and truly worried I would never get my glasses back. Apparently, the lab working on my lenses lost a piece of the white trim, a crucial part of my frames (pictured in the first image). The manufacturer no longer makes that part so they had to replace it with a transparent trim (pictured in the second image) that completely destroys the original style and personality of these glasses I cherished so much. To top it all off, my botched glasses now make a disturbing creaking sound every time I put them on or adjust them as if the lenses don't fit properly. The new lenses sound about ready to pop out. All in all, I paid a lot of money and waited almost 2 months for a completely botched pair of glasses (the frames originally cost about twice what I paid here for the lenses) and the only thing they are willing to do to compensate me for the time, money and headache is to update the lenses on my backup pair of frames. Fool me once... Don't trust this business. If you have simple needs, like you just want to update a prescription/order contacts, I would recommend Target. You can easily schedule with Target online. If you have a more complicated job like I did, absolutely steer clear! read more

Your staff are very rude and unhelpful. The equipment that you have to put your face against smells of sweat as if no one ever cleans it. When I told a member of your staff he completely ignored me. There were no clear direction on how to focus on a green or red light No one help me pick out new glasses. They had me fill out paperwork after she dilated my pupils. I could hardly see. The doctors are excellent. That being said, they were vacuuming during my appointment which was extremely disruptive and unprofessional. They have a very limited selection of glasses available as well. I went up the street to LensCrafters where they have a huge selection. I can't speak to the service because I didn't get past the booking process. Be warned that they want an $85 non-refundable "deposit" to get an appointment, which they say you can use to buy something from them afterward. And this fee persists even if you give them insurance ahead of time. It's just a way to try and pre-sell you something, before they even evaluate what you might need. I've never heard of this scheme, including places that stock the same eyewear brands. They're probably fearful that people might want a different brand of frames or whatever than they offer, but it's absurd that you have to give them what is like 8x the copay just for an appointment. read more

If you're looking for a top notch, creme de la creme place for all your eyesight needs (as, personally, I think everyone ought to because seeing is so so so important!), then this is the place for you. I used to see Dr Weintraub when he was at this location, but he retired and Dr Sun took over and her excellence matches his, which is a mad high bar. I moved from the west side to Pasadena and trying eye doctors in the Pasadena area made me realize just how fortunate I had been when I lived out west. So much so that I make the trek to Santa Monica once yearly for my eye exam with Dr Sun and all optical needs at Sunny Optometry. I have never had such mindful, conscientious, intelligent, lovely and just really really excellent care for my eyes as I've had with Dr Sun. Finding this level of care is rare. (And no offense to Pasadena! I don't doubt that Pasadena has comparable eye doctors but I haven't found them and the trek out west is well worth it!). Dr Sun is so lovely and exacting in the way you really want (!), explains everything so beautifully and thoroughly. Her staff is likewise fantastic - incredibly knowledgeable and good at explaining the mind boggling intricacies of what insurance covers and what it doesn't. I've been coming here for over 30 years. Sunny bought the business from my original eye Dr so to have stayed on even after moving to Palm Sorings I guess that's a pretty good indicator that I'm happy here. I have VSP insurance so most is covered, can't complain about the cost for exams but I did learn a few years ago to buy glasses and contacts at Costco . They are happy to oblige with printed prescriptions. The office staff is happy and efficient. The office is clean and welcoming. Just discovered the parking structure down the street was demolished but I went early and meter parking is right in front. read more

First, they did a beautiful renovation of the space keeping the integrity of what Dr. Weintraub had and brightening up the space. The Staff is well-versed in all aspects of eye testing and very well-versed in eye-glass fittings and brands. They carry beautiful brands and are patient during the shopping process, too, as you try on lots of glasses to find the right look! Dr. Sun's other eye doctors on staff are excellent, too. Really need to have Yelp offer 0 stars cause that's what this practice deserves! Dr. Sun "supposedly" took over Dr. Weintraub's practice but it's a shame. She loved her practice into his space but did nothing to take care of his patients or practice. Takes about 5 months to get in, her staff knows NOTHING about the other doctors that she practices with but yet suggests you should see them. No professionalism or personal touch. And if you move and need any sort of help - even a copy of your prescription, GOOD LUCK! Steer clear of this practice! So sad to watch this happen! Dr. Weintraub was the best! read more

I couldn't be happier with this place as my go to optometry. The staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable. The doctor, Alice Sun will give you the highest level of professionalism. She is extremely thorough every step of the way. I couldn't ask for a better doctor. I have been referring friends and colleagues to her. I drive about 60 miles to see her. The price is reasonable, compared to nearby places in Santa Monica. She is generous when it comes to samples. I highly recommend this practice and Dr. Sun. read more

Dr. Alice Sun is an AMAZING optometrist! I transferred my care from an optometry in Koreatown to Dr. Sun's practice as it is closer to home. Dr. Sun has an incredibly warm disposition; she listened intently to all of my concerns which she laid to rest with her wealth of knowledge, was extremely thorough in her assessment of my eyes (she performed tests I've never even been offered in at my old optometry office!), and took her time with me so I never felt rushed. I feel so lucky to have Dr. Sun as my optometrist now; I've already recommended her to all of my friends & family. Dr. Sun's front desk staff were also extremely inviting and sweet! They worked with me to accommodate me for an appointment time and followed up at various times prior to the appointment to give me friendly reminders, which I always appreciate. First of all, I have seen 2 doctors here and they have both been fantastic. My issues are with the service, front desk help, and technology. #1. while preparing for my upcoming appointment, they sent me text messages, emails, and called me, once, all three in a 10-minute span while I was presenting, on zoon, recording with my phone so I couldn't turn off sounds. #2. you have to make an appointment to pick up your glasses. Ostensibly as a service, so they can adjust them to your head and such, but they never say that in the email, just "APPOINTMENT" all caps and an exclamation point. #3. when your glasses are ready and they send that email informing you it is now time to schedule your appointment to pick them up, there is no way for them to check if your entire order is ready - making it necessary to come out there multiple times. This is structurally what I find problematic. Now for a personal note. The customer service and personal attention I got from the front desk staff was atrocious. Again, the doctors and the person that helps pick out frames and takes the lense order are all great, but the front desk help is rude, confused, and disorganized. They had my insurance info, and then lost it. Called me to get it again, and found it while on the phone with me. While being helped with my frames the woman that was "helping" me continually ignored my questions. Me: These are loose, is there a way to make them tighter? Her: Bend forward. Me: *bending forward and moving my head, "Yeah, I can tell they are loose, can we make them tighter?" Her: Well they will seem loose if you shake your head. At this point, I was done. Me: taking my glasses off my head and putting them into the case: "Let me just grab my shit and get out of here, I'll have them adjusted near my house. Her: Sir, there is no need to cuss. I will not have you disrespect me by cussing in front of me. Sigh. Level 10 virtue signaling. The worse part, I get home, check the glasses, and the prescription is wrong. They are literally useless. Take my advice, until they replace the front desk staff, avoid this place. read more

I love Sunny Optometry in Santa Monica. The doctors are very knowledgable and the other assistants are friendly and very helpful. I lost my reading glasses and had to pick out a new pair. One of the women working there spent time looking at frames with me and that made my decision much easier. It will take about 3 weeks to get my new glasses but it is worth the wait. The prices for frames are rather expensive depending on the company that makes them. I selected a LaFont frame (Paris). The total cost was $932.00 but I was happy with my choice and willing to pay to pick exactly what I wanted. LaFont just happens to be an expensive brands but the glasses hold up better. read more

I was a patient of Dr. Weintraub for 20+ years so naturally I was concerned when I heard he was retiring. However, after my first visit with Dr. Sun, she put me completely at ease. She is incredibly knowledgeable, personable, and sweet. She took so much more time patiently explaining the results of my eye exams than I ever expected from a doctor. Unfortunately, the building they operate out of was heavily damaged last June by an arsonist, but they have built back even better than before and the place looks terrific. I started wearing glasses since I was 9 and now I'm in my 30s, so let's just say I've seen plenty of optmetrists (from school providers, to private offices, to Costco opt, & medical offices). Sunny is by far my favorite and the one I plan to stick with. Called to make an appointment and staff was efficient, got something onto my calendar seamlessly. As soon as I walked in a week later, I can tell how much pride Dr. Sun has for her office. Office shone radiantly and all the shelves and cases were spotless. Definitely not the dingy offices I've experienced and particularly important during covid times. Staff was pleasant, checked me in and minutes later I was met by Dr. Sun. Dr. Sun is very personable and VERY thorough. I was concerned about an eye condition that I could have inherited, and she recorded my med history and went into great length on explaining which equipment and how she will monitor/potentially diagnosis me for this. I never felt rushed during the process and I left knowing I'm in capable hands in the long run. Btw, f you're looking for trendy, in fashion glasses, this is the place to be. They have the newest frames and they can customize lens. Since I'm near-sighted in one eye and far in the other, one of my lens is always thicker. Dr. Sun recommended me a thinner type lens to help balance them out. Also added blue light protection since I'm on the computer all day. read more

I have experience high pressure sales and they were extremely rude to my partner and my daughter over the holidays. As a result, they lost a sale that day and I am considering alternative Optemtry shops for my future eye care. Alert - after 20 years with Dr Weintraub this practice has been sold. I just experienced the new office attempting to double charge for my exam. They attempted without approval to charge $375 for "double exam" claiming I was refit for contacts and that requires a double exam billing. This is In addition to additional services as part of the exam totaling well over $500 for just my yearly check up. I have incredible insurance through UCLA, and the out of pocket bill they attempted for the exam was $282, I never approved of the fees. read more
