When we're at the beach, going to Monkey Bar has been a favorite for 8 years now! I really like the Patty Melts & the fries are always hot & fresh. We (wife and I) dropped in for a late lunch and were wonderfully surprised after giving up on beachfront eateries. It was busy & short staffed. But bartender greeted and in couple of minutes seated us, took our drink and food order. Food didn't take long to come and was very good! We were served in glasses, on real plates and provided silverware. Something missing in the prior 2 days experiences. Where ever we went we served in plastic cups and plasticware. Every one else visiting the restaurant seemed content. No one complained. This will be our lunch spot from here on. BTW, we are both hispanic (dark complexion) and we felt comfortable. No frills easy in and out dining. My favorite item on the menu is the spinach salad with the warm bacon dressing.. my kids love the chicken tenders. They have cheap beer and a great waitstaff. I recommend Monkey bar for anyone needing a quick easy and delicious meal. read more

I was vaping in the restaurant and nobody said a word. Then all of a sudden a girl said no smoking in the restaurant. I said "I'm not smoking" she said yes you are. These people need to learn the difference between a cigarette and vaping. As I left I blew a big cloud of vape at her. read more

I went here with the family for a casual night out, as they'd been there before and recommended it. We shared the crab dip as an appetizer which was good but very cheesy, my parents seemed to enjoy their fried seafood platters, my friend had their 16oz burger (which she said was 1 thick patty but turned out to be 2 stacked patties), and I had the baked tilapia with mango salsa. I enjoyed mine very much, and I'm pretty sure all of the plates left the table clean. Service however was lacking, as our waitress seemed to constantly forget about us, and the appetizer took so long that we had to ask for it again- pretty sure it was never entered on the ticket. There were only 2 other tables when we arrived, only 1 of which was she servicing. She also left the check with us for over 10 minutes, despite my dad pulling the card out of his wallet as she put it on the table. It took us forever to get out of there, despite our table being cleared. Make sure you're on island time when you go here- we were trying to get down the road to play a round of putt-putt before they closed. read more

We tried this place for the first time last weekend. It was pretty underwhelming. Decor was blah--I could get on board with the collection of stuffed monkeys given the name of the restaurant, but the other "jungle" themed kitsch that looked like it came from Kirklands at the mall was cheesy. I can deal with lack of atmosphere when the food & service makes up for it. Not the case here. I will say--the food wasn't bad--just not great. Our table got wings & a side salad, a chicken quesadilla, and nachos. My friend asked for no cheese or onions on her salad, and she got both on there anyway. We asked for chicken on our nachos & got ground beef. Our service was also very slow and we had to ask to get our check. Probably won't be going back here. read more

Great Chicken Wings get them hot, which is your standard Buffalo style sauce, mild has butter and a little sugar added but are good. Beers on tap at good prices, one of the only bars I've been to that has Michelob Ultra on tap. This is definitely a locals bar, restaurant, hangout and that is their bread and butter. Don't expect over the top service if you are just vacationing but depending on the crowd, service is fair. The food is good but if you order a burger be aware they come either chargrilled or flat fryer grilled. Chargrilled will be flame cooked and can look burnt especially if you order it well done. Stick to the bar food, chicken wings, sandwiches, burgers, and salads. The Shimp Basket is always a good, as are the Founder Basket and Clam Strip Basket. The daily lunch special is usually very good and a local favorite. Bottom line is it is a great place to eat at the bar or a bar table for small parties of 1 - 4, this is an unpretentious drinking establishment and if that's what you are looking for then this is it. Expect strong drinks and friendly people at the bar. You will get your best service at the bar or a bar table. Also the local clientele is middle aged to older, this is very much an adult establishment, so if you're looking for a younger drinking crowd try BT's (The Beach Tavern). The restaurant area is separated by a wide entrance and has a small bar and no-frills tables that can be combined for larger parties. However if you have more than 2 kids with you, then maybe the Mexican Restaurant next door would be a better choice. read more

Randomly decided to stop here for lunch and to cool down after a trek through Fort Macon. The shrimp and crab bisque was such a great starter! Filled me up so I probably didn't need a meal but that's never stopped me. I got the unbreaded wings with the mild sauce and was very happy with my decision. If I could give this place zero stars if I could! we walked in with 2 adults and 6 kids and the lady behind the bar acted like it was an inconvenience to seat us. The place is dark and dingy and looks dated. we decided to stay until the waitress went to pull two tables together and my teenager tried to move out of the way, I guess she thought she was trying to sit down so she stuck her hand up in my teens face and snapped, "you need to wait a minute." It was at that point I told my husband if we didn't leave I wasn't going to be able hold my tongue. So we turned around and walked out without a word. You would think after the 2020 covid year they would be HAPPY to have paying and tipping customers but I guess they could care less. My husband and I had a pretty good experience here. It was "Seat Yourself" so we chose to sit at the bar. There were 3 waitresses that came by and said they would be right with us. They seemed overwhelmed even though the place didn't seem busy. Our drinks were given in a timely manner and we did wait a little longer than normal sitting at the bar. We both got cheeseburgers and fries, and it was actually really good. It was just weird because the 2 of the women kept saying how they were slammed and it was crazy- which we didn't think so, but who knows. It just seemed unorganized. We figured it would've made sense to have just one person working the bar and the others running food and taking money. We would probably go back mainly for the food. I've been a regular customer at Monkey Bar for over ten years now. Their menu is diverse, you can have a simple sandwich or a full entree, with many appetizers and salad options. I have never had a bad meal here, the food is always delicious and cooked perfectly. If I have any complaints it would be the service is normally slow, but the staff is always friendly and cheerful. The owner , Terri makes it a point to stop by every table and talk with her customers and it's often you see her serving food and busing tables. This is easy my favorite restaurant in Atlantic Beach. Did I mention the prices are reasonable? You will not be disappointed. read more

Decided to come try this place out a few days ago even though the Yelp reviews are not all that great. The service was good! But the food was horrible.. I went with a cheeseburger & I could only take two bites.. It was completely burnt to a crisp.. (The two people I was with also had burnt food) I don't understand how the cook thought it was okay to send food out like that. Might return for drinks but don't recommend the food. read more

Went here for a late lunch we wanted something lite but filling..this looks like a local place with a lot of local customers but anyways we ordered angry orchard beer/cider it was a good and cold my cuz never had it and say she doesn't drink beer but I talked her into getting one and she loved it... the food was delicious my cousin got the spinach salad she said it was delicious I got the blackened tuna steak with house chips that come with ranch dressing it was delicious also..customer service was good also so definitely a nice establishment with very tasty good.... read more

Great restaurant for lunch, dinner, or even a drink. The lunch special are excellent and extremely affordable. I always look forward to "Meatloaf Monday's." Staff is excellent, welcoming to locals and tourist, alike. Willing to make sure your visit is as enjoyable as possible. And the more you visit, you will quickly become a "regular," with staff remembering your drink orders and things you do (and don't) like. This place has really gone down hill and seems to be struggling. Terrible service, repeatedly messes up orders, refuses to acknowledge mistakes like forgetting on two separate occasions to even put our order in, and the food quality is bad. Chicken wings were raw, not even cooked. Place seems like it's really hanging on by a thread. Wait staff is rude and not happy to be there, likely overworked. read more

I've had this place bookmarked a while because monkeys are Cousin April's favorite animal. I did kind of expect more in the way of decor or menu for the theme but there were just several ugly stuffed monkeys on the shelves behind the bar. Monkey bread or banana deserts would have been a nice touch to the menu. Our server was very friendly. The food wasn't that great but wasn't all terrible. I'll add more on this later. read more

Came in here for the first time with my husband for lunch. They were not very busy, which was great! Our waitress was very nice. Got chili cheese fries for an appetizer, which were amazing. We both got chicken sandwiches with pepper jack cheese and bacon, my husbands was fried and mine was grilled. Both sandwiches were delicious. He got fries for a side, which were cooked perfectly. I got a Caesar salad, which wasn't spectacular but was still good. If had better but I've definitely had way worse! When our waitress got busy another helped her and was also very friendly. The Monkey Bar and Grill reminded me of the local joint where I got my first waitressing job. Standard menu, very casual ambiance, and seemed to have quite a few regulars. We stopped in for a burger and fries and was not disappointed. My one year old niece went bananas for the personal pizza (pun absolutely intended). The beer selection was better than expected and the tab wasn't ridiculous like you'll find in a lot of beach towns. The place has a chill, divey feel to it and was a great place to stop in for lunch before hitting the road back home. read more

I have to leave a little love here, because Monkey Bar is one of my favorites. It's definitely more of a local hang-out with cold beer and fresh food. It's not fussy, and I think we all like it that way! Great homemade chips, buffalo wings, sandwiches and large salads. The service is friendly and the food usually comes out pretty quick. The ambiance is standard but the prices are perfect- you're not paying for the decor but for a damn good eat. Give it a shot! read more
