Well, we're two for two on trying to eat at The Monkey Bar. We walked in at 7:20pm on a Saturday night and they've got the main dining room closed. There were two high top tables open, which would be a bit of a struggle for my 89 year old father. A very nice lady at the bar tried to help us. No one who worked there even acknowledged us. I guess their business is so good they can afford to alienate people. read more

What a fun place for dinner. This is a small bar/restaurant in a little shopping center in Atlantic Beach NC. Very unassuming from the outside but the decor was like a trip to the jungle. It seems to be a popular place for the locals, especially the seniors. My cousin and I really enjoyed the food but they sure needed to have more help. The server was helpful and tried to be attentive but seemed to be the only one on duty besides the bartender. I had one of the best shrimp and grits ever which came with a nice size salad and a piece of toasted garlic bread. No room for dessert and I had enough left for dinner the next night. I would return just for another serving of this deliciousness. I can't wait to go back next year and see what other goodies they have on the menu. read more

For starters, my mom and I had to clean off another table ourselves just to have a place to sit. It took over two hours for our food to come out, and when it finally did, everything was cold. Don't order the Ruben. Half the sandwich had no kraut and barely any corn beef. Not to mention one of the pieces of bread was the end cap of the loaf. Pretty much a thousand island sandwich. Wow! What can I say. The food was fantastic. Very flavorful. My husband had the Congo Burger, which was huge and very tasty. I had the mango habanero chicken breast. The sauce was delicious and very zippy! Friendly service, and safari decor on the walls. Eclectic and cool. read more

Ok, if you're looking for a 5 Star dining experience, this isn't your place. However, if you're looking for good bar food and a decent selection of well priced and cold craft beers, Monkey Bar is for you. We went on a local tip that their wings are THE best in AB. Sadly we missed wing night which is Wednesday and you can get 10 wings for 6.95!! Well we wanted to try them anyway so we ordered them Naked (which is what we were told) versus battered. Now these were great wings- I mean great! And the blue cheese dressing if it wasn't homemade was the best I've ever had. My suggestion would be naked wings tossed in the sauce versus sauce on the side. Now of course that was an appetizer (hey it's vacation) so we went with a patty melt with a side of chips (up charge but most defiantly worth it ) and the HUGE Congo Burger, of which my husband ate half! We left stuffed and happy and even had a few craft beers which were LESS than $4 a pint at the beach! Whoa! Now don't let the stuffed monkey decor and all the locals scare you off vacationers- we had a great meal with appetizer, entrees and beer for $45. We are putting the Monkey Bar on our lists of musts for our next trip to AB for sure and you should too! read more

I have been there many times but last night was exceptional. The food is always good, but the staff was EXCELLANT. The waitresses all worked as a team running flawlessly between tables making sure everyone was happy. Even with a table of 12, smiles were abundant; Even the girl behind the bar was running to help. read more

We tried this establishment for dinner one night- my husband is gluten intolerant and we explained this to the server who claimed she understood- waited forever for our food to come out and when it was brought out we saw our server pick a piece of bread off of the top of my husbands entree and set to the side- when we called her out she tried to deny it- my husband made them throw the food away in front of us and make him another (I would have probably not ate it at all but he is braver than I am) Would be an ok place if you are 1) not in a big hurry and just want to drink while you wait 2) don't have any food allergies read more

I would love to give 5 stars , but when you are told you can't order carry out while you wait in the bar because they are too busy, there is a problem. Can't get through by phone either. We are locals and usually go here once a week Sadly, that will have to change. read more

Was worried about the reviews but we were committed and in we went! This little place was slammed at 1 in the afternoon-definitely a locals place. Reminds me of Cheers where everyone knows your name. So expectations were middle of road and far exceeded our expectations. Our waitress Michelle (also the bartender) came over and greeted us quickly. She grab our drink orders and explained it would be a minute. I've been a bartender/waitress and understood being in the weeds. So drinks took a minute-food was quick and good. I mean it's a bar and grill not fine dining. Chicken Salad Sandwich came recommended paired with slaw. Great recommendation. Chicken salad was plentiful. Crab Dip was ok...I'm a MD girl and well I'm not easy to please. Flavor was there but not enough crab. Kiddos had chicken tenders w/ fries and a pizza. Now let's talk fries. A little too white for our taste (if you know what I mean) but a good experience. They make fries like nobody else. Super good. Prices are very reasonable. Most of the staff is very courteous and friendly despite being very busy/overworked. Had the Congo burger and chicken breasts and a pizza. Burger was mega big. The chicken was pretty lame. The pizza was for the kids and they were fine with it. Giving it 5 stars to pump it to its worth. Give it a try and don't miss the fries. Went in around 830 pm after getting into town, was recommended by the resort we were staying at. Place was fairly empty and we were seated promptly. Beer was good and waitress was friendly, I ordered the Congo burger and it was really good, nice and juicy and flavorful. They did mess up our order however, my wife's order was never put in and she had to wait 20 minutes more for her food. It is a seat yourself restaurant which is fine, but there were no clean tables and we had to wait 10 minutes for a waitress to come clean a table for me and my family to sit. Once we placed our orders we waited for over 45 minutes for three things. Many other tables got their food before us when they came in later than we did. Our first evening at the beach we were just driving around and found this place. It doesn't look like much but it was delicious. I had the fried shrimp basket with onion rings, slaw and hush puppies. Everything was delicious. I could tell the shrimp was fresh and everything in the basket was great also. My wife had the crab cakes and loved them as well. We liked this place so much we came back the next day for lunch and got crab cake sandwiches with their homemade chips and ranch and split a basket of homemade hush puppies. The waitress was outstanding; pleasant and worked hard at keeping the patrons happy. The actual food service was another story. Once we ordered, it took an hour for us to get our food. Four tables got thier food before us and the waitress said "the wings take longer". Yet 4 other tables got food before us including one guy who got 20 wings and we only ordered ten. The appetizer came out with the main coarse, so that didn't help with all the kids. Most of the food was great the flounder fell apart ; not a huge deal but they should consider using a larger bun to accommodate the fish fillet. I just hope that the Cook or manager in the back learns better time management. We ordered fries, Pizza, Wings, and a few sandwiches. 1 hour was a crazy amount of time to wait for our ordered food. Would I go back, yes, but not with my whole family. my observation was they managed food orders much quicker with small tables of 2-3 people.And yes, there was a help wanted sign in the window. read more
