Sheep's head taco special with mango salsa and Cajun fries

I really enjoy this place. I come here every year with my daughter for a drink and fries. This year, however, I had the pleasure of eating the taco special and have come back again for the same thing. I really enjoy the atmosphere and the service. It's not a 5 star joint; but it is worth a visit. There is NO a/c, but the fans are always going and there is a great beach breeze.

I was vacationing in the area and happened upon this little place and decided to try them for dinner. It's a really cool place between a hotel and the water with lots of breeze happening. Our waitress Michelle was truly exceptional and very good at what she does. The food, however is where this gem is lacking. Almost all of us got Molly Burgers in some way or form. You cannot get them cooked to order as they are just a little place. Well, what you get is a small hockey puck looking burger with little to no flavor. My wife got fries with hers and they were undercooked. I DID get a drink from the bar called a "Seagram" and it was delicious. It's a bit of a shame to have such a caring wait staff that has to serve mediocre food.

We had the peel-and-eat shrimp with Old Bay seasoning and the garlic Parmesan fries--both were delicious! The staff was very friendly, and our food came out fairly quickly. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, with a great spot right next to the pier. Overall, it was a great experience, and we'd definitely come back!

This is a hidden gem behind the Doubletree Hotel. We were at Windjammer and did not want to stray too far from our hotel for food. We were so glad we decided to eat here. The crab cake, fried fish and shrimps were so good. My fiance had two types of spicy wings which he enjoyed and they had tenders and other options for the kids. The view was also amazing. We will return.

We sat down and no one came for 20 min. My husband went and found someone and then it took another 10 for her to make her way to our table. We ordered a soda and a beer and that took another 20 min. 1 hour wait for a diet coke and beer and both are so flat i didn't even want to drink it. I noticed the waitress (the only person i saw working the whole time) was talking to a table for 10 min. By now, over an hour has passed and we only have two flat drinks. I go inside to ask for a new soda because im tired of waiting. I see the waitress, still talking to the table, and then she leaves me waiting inside at the bar for another 10 min (20 min of talking at this point). She never acknowledged me and I was tired of being disrespectfully ignored, so I left. I am a very patient person, but that was ridiculous!! I can totally understand being short staffed. But at this point there were no other patrons in the restaurant and she simply wasn't doing anything but talking. All the tables were dirty, the bathroom was gross, the outside bar was covered in drinks and everything just looked sticky! Be a bar/late night club or a restaurant, but not both if you can't handle it!

Yo, the internet homies steered me wrong! Shame on y'all!…read more I got the shrimp burger with smoked gouda mac and cheese. The shrimp were criminally overcooked, and the mac needed salt in the worst way. They didn't salt the pasta water (or salt it enough), and the mac was really sad, as a result. My friend got the soup of the day combo, which were were told was a "white bean and basil soup", but I'll be danged if it didn't come out with the most garbanzo-y looking white beans I've ever seen in my life. She said it tasted like they dumped rotel, chickpeas, and pesto into a pot and called it soup, and not in a good way. My wife got the smoked wings. She said the flavor was good, but they were brought out lukewarm and very lightly sauced (she's an extra saucy kind of lady). We got two cocktails, a cherry limeade slushie and a Kill Devil Hills Pain Killer. We were told the cherry limeade was made with just cherry mixer, lime, and vodka, but it definitely tasted like it had coconut in it, and my wife hates coconut. The Pain Killer I got was acceptable, but we ordered it with our food, and it didn't come out until I'd almost finished my dinner. The vibes in the place were meh, but fine (especially if the food/drinks were good), but the tables were extremely sticky across their entire surface, so either someone sucks at cleaning, or the finish on the tables was failing and needed to be sanded down/refinished. We did get a side of sweet potato fries that were pretty dope, but they didn't make up for the disappointment of everything else. 1 out of 5 stars; do not recommend.

They had a huge bar, a lounge seating area, and some high-top tables. In the back, you'll find a small arcade of retro video games (no Skee-Ball unfortunately.) We tried a lot of different beers thanks to the small free samples from our bartender and their various sized pour options. I had the hot chocolate Hand Warmer brown ale, and it was delicious! I followed up my pint with a flight: a Vienna lager (Carolina Rig), a Schwarzbier (Money Island), the Maibock (Suitemates), and the fruited wheat ale (Citrus Tsunami). Each beer was well made. I was particularly fond of Suitemates and Citrus Tsunami - both crisp, tasty, not too sweet. Our bartender was great! The location is really nice with lots of parking and big, bright windows. I never expected to find such great craft beer on the Island, and I loved Crystal Coast. Be prepared - no food!

Lots of really good options, as well as flights. I do like that you can get a taster, half pint, or full pint. They also have to go cans. I did not appreciate that they use only plastic cups, especially being so close to the beach. They are dog friendly.

I visited Southern Salt after a local friend insisted I give it a try. Sometimes local…read morerecommendations are hit or miss. This one was definitely a hit. To my surprise, there was no wait and plenty of available seating. The restaurant is much larger than it appears from the outside, with a spacious dining area and a beautiful covered outdoor section overlooking the water. Watching boats cruise in while eating fresh seafood is a pretty tough way to have a bad meal. Atmosphere - 5/5 Southern Salt absolutely nails the casual coastal vibe. This isn't a place where anyone is judging your wardrobe choices. Think shorts, a polo, and a healthy appetite. The waterfront views and incoming boats create the perfect backdrop for a relaxed meal. Cleanliness - 4/5 The only minor issue was that our outdoor table was still slightly wet from an earlier rain despite being under cover. Not a big deal, and I almost feel guilty mentioning it. The restrooms, however, could use a little TLC. They're overdue for a remodel and a deeper cleaning. Nothing alarming, but enough to notice. (Urinal looked like it has been out of order for years.) Parking 5/5 Parking is free for patrons, which is always appreciated. The lot across the street was partially full when we arrived, so I could see it becoming a bit of a scavenger hunt during peak hours. On a Monday, though, it wasn't an issue. Service - 5/5 Our waitress, Isabel, was exactly what you hope for when dining out: friendly, attentive, and genuinely pleasant. She kept our drinks topped off without us having to ask and even brought a refill of the hush puppies. Any server who delivers additional hush puppies is operating at an elite level in my book. Food Quality - 4/5 The seafood was excellent. The flounder tasted fresh, the shrimp was grilled perfectly and seasoned well, and both were exactly what you'd hope for from a waterfront seafood restaurant. The hush puppies deserve their own paragraph. They were phenomenal. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and dangerously easy to keep eating. If they sold them by the bucket, I'd have questions for myself later. The cocktail sauce and tartar sauce were also noticeably better than average. My one small complaint was the fries. They weren't quite fresh-from-the-fryer hot. A touch more salt wouldn't have hurt either. Still perfectly edible, just not operating on the same level as the seafood. Value - 3/5 Our total for two meals (with waters) came to $65.06+ tip paying cash. Given the quality of the food, portion sizes, service, and atmosphere, I thought the price was reasonable. It's certainly not cheap, but compared to nearby seafood options, it feels like a solid value. One useful tip: Southern Salt charges extra for credit card payments, so bring cash if you'd rather keep a few extra dollars in your pocket. Final Thoughts Southern Salt delivers exactly what most people are looking for in a waterfront seafood restaurant: great views, friendly service, fresh seafood, and a laid-back atmosphere where nobody is trying too hard. Aside from fries that didn't quite reach their full potential, this was an excellent experience from start to finish. Overall Score: 5/5 I'd gladly return for the seafood, the waterfront views, and, most importantly, the hush puppies that somehow managed to become the star of the meal.
