Grouper Bites (appetizer)
Blaike G.

Great local spot in Newport. The ambiance is that of a small town sports bar. Pool tables, bar, stage for live music, and plenty of events. Our food was absolutely delicious. They season they're food so well even my veggies were enjoyable. I instantly knew the owner had to be familiar with Maryland crab cakes because they were so on point. No stuffing - all crab!! Our servers are always very respectful, tentative, and knowledgeable about the menu items too. One of our go to spots we keep in our rotation of trusted establishments.

Stopped in for lunch as we were headed to Beaufort from Raleigh. Staff were incredibly nice and helpful. Decent beer list. We got the grouper bites and a fried shrimp basket. The grouper bites were generous, fried maybe a tad too done for the thinness of the fish used. The remoulade sauce with the grouper was really good. The shrimp were excellent as well as the fries. Typical bar decor.

Shrimp and grits

Hands down best shrimp and grits I've ever eaten. Red onions, mushrooms, shrimp and a fried stone ground grit cake. And surprise it was bingo night. What a blast!!!

Best mac and cheese ever eaten

Very fresh & hot burger, not premade. Light crowd for lunch, service was prompt. Nice bar vibe.

Local hangout. Food is pretty good for the price. Nothing to write home about but will suffice when you're hangry.

Heard about this place and been trying to get here. Finally, found some friends to join me. We sat…read moreoutside because the weather was perfect and they had a live two piece band. Waitress was very sweet and running her tush off. We got there about 6pm on a Friday night and before we left it was hopping. The food was very good. I had Southwestern Eggrolls and will not have to drive to Jville anymore when I get that craving. The only difference was it came with a chipotle ranch instead of an avocado ranch. My friend had a salad (good size) along with the the Dirty Chicken. She felt like it had a "kick" to it but I tried a bit and didn't think so. She could not eat it all. Nice size serving. She also shared the mozzarella sticks. I didn't try them but she said they were good. They looked like the frozen kind out of the box, so not for me. My other friend had the smash burger that we thought were sliders, but are not. It is a hamburger with two 3oz patties with the fixins. My friend enjoyed it and I believe it came with fries. She also tried the Zucchini fries and ate them all. I personally was not crazy about them but to each his own. A two piece band was playing and they were very good. Oh, I found out just before we left that they carry Bud Zero. Nice surprise. Sitting outdoors was perfect. They put a little fly spinner on your table and no bugs. The bathroom was very clean. Since this appears to be the first post for them I will have to post pictures later. Sept. 20, 2024

We ordered the Half Chef's Tour, which is their charcuterie, and it was honestly one of my favorite parts of the night. Great variety, really well balanced, and perfect for sharing. It set the tone for the whole meal. The scallop nightly special was perfectly cooked with that golden sear and super tender inside. The rosemary steak had so much flavor and was cooked exactly right. The Brussels were crispy and savory, and even the potstickers were a standout. Nothing felt like an afterthought. Service was perfect for the tapas setting too. Not rushed, we didn't feel over bothered, but not neglected either. Overall, it felt elevated but still comfortable. A great experience without feeling over the top. We'll definitely be back.

Circa 81 quickly became one of my most memorable meals along North Carolina's Crystal Coast: a…read morerestaurant that understands both timing and tone. We arrived with a reservation (always a wise move), though we were seated immediately, greeted by a gracious host who set our lunch off on the right note. Once settled, we were welcomed by Philip, whose ease and genuine enthusiasm made the experience feel less transactional and more personal. He spoke about the menu with confidence and curiosity, the mark of someone who truly enjoys being there. Drinks came first: my husband ordered a Painkiller easily one of the best we had during our time on the coast while our son stuck with a classic Coke, and I opted for water. As we ordered, it became clear we were leaning fully into the small plates philosophy. When Philip smiled and dubbed us "tapas aficionados," it felt like an acknowledgment rather than a joke and in that moment, we felt perfectly at home. The table filled quickly. Spanish lamb meatballs arrived first, glazed with sriracha and paired with whipped feta and cilantro bold, balanced, and deeply satisfying. Pork pot stickers followed, tender and flavorful, with a soy-ginger dipping sauce and sweet Thai chili providing just the right contrast. The Gambas al Ajillo shrimp bathed in extra-virgin olive oil and garlic, served with crostini, was classic and comforting. But the standout was the Potatoes Bravas: sliced potatoes grilled to a crisp and finished with a spicy brava aioli. They were addictive in the best way, the kind of dish you keep thinking about long after the table is cleared. Circa 81 is polished yet relaxed, clean, and thoughtfully maintained, a place where the food arrives hot, the service feels human, and the atmosphere invites you to linger. It's a restaurant I would happily return to, and one that earned its place among my favorites on the Crystal Coast.
