Rode our e-bikes from Emerald Isle RV Resort for dinner. As soon as we walked through the door we were greeted by the hostess who was so warm & welcoming. What a beautiful restaurant... from the lighting to the seating!! She sat us in Christopher's station and he didn't miss a beat! Such awesome service!! We ordered the 007 & the St Anna martinis... they were both made perfectly!! For dinner we had the Ahi Tuna and the 8oz filet... & the sides were just as delicious as the main course!!! The Flat Iron steak (medium rare) was more rare than preferred and had a lot of vegetables. The chicken breast was small in quantity and a lot of vegetables. Server was friendly and talkative Long wait at 8pm (45m) which was unfortunate, so we sat at the bar and got a dark chocolate martini which was a little strong in vodka (I'm a sweet tooth) and my SO got a rum and coke. I was searching for places online to eat that was elevated dining in Emerald Isle and this popped up. As soon as I saw the multiple pages of martinis, I was hooked. If you don't drink, they make a mean mocktail too. We ordered the seared tuna and salad with blackened prawns. This was my favorite meal on the island. I'm not gonna lie, I've never had the food here, but the drinks are TO. DIE. FOR ! My Bestest Friend's mom lives in Emerald Isle and this is a staple that we go to daily. They have an entire menu dedicated to just martinis. Whether you want classic, dessert or something in between, they have a martini for you. Probably the best espresso martini I have had in the state of North Carolina. This is a very small bar with only two high tops and bar top seating for drinks. Walked in here for our 3rd or 4th time surprised there wasn't a wait, even on a Tuesday at 6:30. We were immediately sat and our martini's were quickly delivered. This meal was the best we have had in a while. Wife got the filet cooked medium, which was perfect. I got the Tuna. The Tuna came with two sauces alternating on the plate of teriyaki and wasabi. Nice ambiance and friendly service. The seafood and nightly specials were very good, the salad and desserts were delicious. Service was a little slow at the end when it came to getting our bill but they were closing. I am not a martini drinker but they all sounded delicious and were quite popular. The food and drinks were absolutely delicious. They came highly recommended from our resort; The Islander and they did not disappoint. We spoke with the chef and he indicated they get fresh food in daily, which explains why everything was so fresh and amazing. The service was great. We even had the servers offering to take our pictures for us. And of course, the drinks by far were awesome. We will definitely be back. I would rate it beyond five stars if I could. We really enjoyed most all the dishes we ordered, but couldn't finish the salad. Despite asking for light dressing, the salad was drenched and couldn't finish it. Yes the decor and ambiance can feel a bit outdated; we didn't mind. We felt welcomed, tended to and full. I wouldn't categorize this restaurant as fine dining, but worth another visit because we had such a great experience. I enjoyed the grouper special stuffed with crab. I agree with other reviews about the rice, flavorful but mushy consistency. I didn't understand the melted mozzarella on the steak. Fresh warm bread was yummy and complimentary. read more

Looking at the good reviews, so we had to give it try. The martini's were excellent!! Can't go to a place with martini in the name and not try one. (Excellent selection of them). We started with the She-Crab soup which was very good. Lots of crab. Caesar Salad was big and delicious. Not over dressed. Escargot of course. Yum Now.. the best one for last. Polenta with goat cheese, candied walnuts and port wine infused pears !! It was a flavor explosion!! Phenomenal!! Tempura battered Soft shell crabs were awesome. Short ribs were dynamite!! How the mighty have fallen. We have been dining at Kathryn's since it opened around 2000. Excellent food and service, always a crowd waiting to get in. New management took over about 3 years ago, however the menu is essentially the same as back in the day. The problem is one of their excellent appetizers is (was) Frito Misto. This dish had an attractive medley of fried calamari, oysters, and shrimp. Last evening's version consisted of chewy calamari rings minus the other parts of the squid, which tells me they were frozen squid rings. The oysters were chewy as well. The shrimp was coated in a batter which reeked of the taste of rancid frying oil. The calamari rings were nestled in a puddle of oil. Needless to say this was nothing like we have experienced for over twenty years of dining here. The next atrocity to fine dining was the Seafood Coquina, which was alleged to contain sea scallops, and shrimp in a Asiago cream sauce with bread crumbs and seasonal vegetables. The seafood was drowning in a pool of melted butter substance, with a butter crumb porridge. I hate to be cruel, but I have cooked in several fine dining establishments where I would have been fired for producing such sub standard fare. Our server was very good, so we gave her a good tip as we can't blame her for the kitchen's problems. read more

We visited Kathryns on a Friday night and were seated in about 10 mins. The martini options were plentiful and the menu looked good. We ordered the lamb lollipops, but they never came. Once our entrees arrived, I didn't want to remind the waitress of the appetizer order since we already had a lot of food in front of us. I ordered the soft shell crabs and they arrive hot and crispy, but the waitress and service were lacking. The food was good, but I wasn't a fan of the service or the amount of people that were crammed at the bar with none practicing any kind of social distancing. Ok so, here's the breakdown Filet Mignon good. Cooked properly at medium rare. Lobster Tail was delicious! Buttered Penne noodles had my 6 year old very happy. Lamb Lollichops, wish there were more, so yummy. Calamari appetizer had my two oldest fighting over how many pieces they had. LOL. Hubby had the shrimp and grits, too many mushrooms , so plate was just ok. Overall, Good food that survived take out transportation. Appreciate the brave folks at the restaurants still making food for us to grub on. I work in fine dining with high prices than the average night out but the luxury dining room, exceptional food quality and service demand the higher price tag. Kathryn's does not meet any of these. The $22 pasta dish does not come with any protein. The ribeye looked like it was off the menu of an Applebees. I would certainly not return. The rest of the restaurant felt extremely dated and not in a cute, retro or nostalgic way. The service was mostly fine but absolutely nothing to write home about. read more

My wife and I went here for dinner one evening while at Emerald Isle. It was an excellent decision! The restaurant is in a small strip mall area with adequate parking. There was no outdoor seating, they dont take reservations and their hours are 5pm-830 pm- so the window to eat there is small. We decided to go a little earlier than we normally would(515pm) and I am glad we did. We were seated immediately on arrival and the place was half full. By the time we left around 630, all of the tables inside(about 17) were full and about 12-15 people were waiting outside in line. My wife had a filet steak which she said was good but they put gravy over it. If she orders that again, it will be without the gravy. She did not like it on the steak. I had one of the specials- grouper with shrimp encrusted with parmesan covered with a sweet Thai sauce. It was excellent!! This is not a cheap place to eat, but honestly the prices are not bad considering it is a tourist town. Our waiter Chris did an excellent job. We are buying a home in Emerald Isle, NC and experimenting with finding favorite restaurants. Well Kathryn's turn out to be a place we will return to many times in the future. Service was friendly and the decor pleasant. Their martini menu is extensive and they have many of our favorite wines on the menu, too. The food was excellent and plentiful! The goat cheese appetizer was spectacular. There was not room for dessert but next time I will order lighter, maybe appetizer and soup or salad , so I can try a dessert. No reservations, a disappointment, but we will just have to go early or late to avoid the crowded dinner time. Love this new place! read more
