Great little place! Very inviting; fun decor! Fun blue seats combined with a rustic/brown theme makes you feel at home and at ease while trying to figure out what to eat. There are baked goods for those who do not want to order of the menu. We thought their menu had some really great options. We loved our breakfast! The scrambled eggs were fantastic; just how I love it - smooth, creamy and velvety. Baguette was fresh but I wish it had more butter! Can't go wrong with more butter! We came here for brunch as my friend wanted eggs. The decor is supposed to be french style though it did not feel that way to me. There are two parts to the dining area. Street level and down some stairs to get to the main dining area. It also opens out to the tiny outdoor dining (2 tables). There are also a couple of stairs to get to the counter for payment. If you have stroller or in a wheelchair, it is still accessible as there are tables available at the street level dining area. Staff can also help you with payment so that you do not need to go to the counter. I think the layout is due to it being in a older building. Food is delicious. I like my eggs Benny which has croissant instead English muffin as the base. I requested for runny yolks and the chef did it. Eggs were perfectly poached with no vinegary taste. The potatoes were nicely seasoned and the slice of watermelon was great for the hot weather. Ask for the ketchup. It was sooooooo good! House made. I think the hot sauce is house made too. If you like eggs Benedict or having brunch, try this place. If you are a fanatic of fresh bread, this is a must! Yummy yummy in my tummy! Met up w a friend here for lunch and I was charmed by this little gem! The decor is cute, the place is open and bright thanks to the large windows. Small kitchen but seating area is spacious. The food is as good as the coffee! Got myself a latte and paired it with a chicken sandwich. My friend got a cappuccino and a roast beef sandwich (one of their most popular items on the menu!) and we were both very happy with our choices. The slices of chicken were nice and thick; and there were enough cranberries scattered throughout so that it added a nice pop of flavour that blended well with the creaminess of the brie cheese. It's a very nice, comfortable place to sit, the food is excellent, the service is equally good, the prices are fair and, all in all, it's a place to which I would return next time we are in Nanaimo. This little cafe in Nanaimo uses all organic ingredients and everything is made from scratch. The pastries were the star of the show for sure. The Nanaimo bar was very hefty and perfectly constructed. We also got a few of their pastries that were lovely and flakey. The food tasted fresh and very tasty but portions so small for the French toast that I had to order more food as I was still quite hungry. I did request a substitution for the 2 fried eggs to be exchanged for hash browns. I was only given 1 very flat hash brown, it ended up being 4 small bites, which I didn't feel was a fair exchange for 2 eggs. At least 3 of those flat hash browns could equal 2 eggs. So if you order a substitution, make sure it's a fair exchange ahead of time. Having those 2 fried eggs on top of 1 piece of French toast might be filling enough but either give 3 of those flat hash browns or 2 proper pieces of French toast with one hash brown for a filling enough portion. The chicken pot pie was mostly gravy, very little veggies & meat. The salad that was with the pot pie was super boring. The 2 puff pastries were difficult and messy to cut. Again, it was all tasty, just not balanced. Service was slow and and not once did our waters get refilled in our 2 hour visit. The waitress had a detached demeanour and was uncomfortable to talk with. I have allergies and asked a couple questions about ingredients and felt scowled at with a negative attitude with the responses. The atmosphere was so-so and temperature was way too chilly to feel relaxed and comfortable. We had coffee after and they didn't understand what a proper long pour should be but the mocha coffee was acceptable and would order it again. The feature french onion soup was also a surprise hit (bread and cheese served on the side, which has always been my biggest qualm with french onion soup in general: too much bread that's too hard to break through). If there was a weak point it was the hollandaise (too thin) and the breakfast potatoes (seemed a little stale). The servers were charming and happy to help, and the room was large and bright. Apparently, getting a Nanaimo bar in Nanaimo is not the easiest thing in the world; I tried two places before finally finding this one which sells them. The butter icing is just so sumptuous, and fortunately they didn't make it too sweet which would have been too much when combined with the richness of the butter. The cappuccinos and lattes were smooth and creamy, the food, incredible, and the pastures, well, you will have to go and see for yourself! We ordered the vegetarian baguette sandwich, and the breakfast muesli. They don't have a kids menu but they were so accommodating basically telling us they would make up whatever we wanted for our son. We ordered scrambled eggs, a croissant, and a fruit cup which he loved. The veggie sandwich was flavourful, the bread crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I couldn't put it down. The muesli was light, not too sweet and had tons of fresh fruit in it. We are sad we didn't find this place sooner or we would have eaten here every meal read more

My wife and I popped in for a quick snack before heading to Tofino. We did not plan on staying because of our schedule but it was such a lovely place, very lively and lots of locals. We shared a roasted chicken sandwich, and we opted for a croissant instead of the slice bread it normally comes in- and it was absolutely phenomenal! The croissant taste like something out of a gourmet bakery in Paris and the sandwich was just perfect. We also had a Nanaimo bar there, which was also very good. The cream part in the middle clearly showed off their technique as it was soooo smooth and buttery. We visited this spot as the hotel breakfast service was, well, hotel breakfast. An asiago tomato puff pastry breakfast was AMAZING. As an americano snob I was surprised that it was actually delicious as my initial smell test was not appealing. The know what they are doing for sure. There is lots of seating, a little bit of a dated area but when the food and coffee is this good then it is rather a mute point. The one thing that needs to change is the ventilation. I smelled like the cafe for a good hour after. With baking on site an improvement with venting really should be invested in. One other down side...they are closed on SUNDAYS!! Really. I am still going to give them 5 stars because it is a perfect place to take your coffee and pastry as a take out and head down to the harbour to watch the float planes. read more

How do you run out of bread and food mid-service? No, seriously, how do you do that on the premiere dining day of the week? It was then a matter of twenty questions to determine what was, or was not, available on the menu. While we eat, the manager sat at the table next to us, and was carrying on a loud conversation with his staff several meters away in the kitchen, whilst working on his laptop. As we eat, one of the kitchen workers (within close proximity) was mucking out the ladies' toilet with a mop whilst the door was wide open, and with the bucket within splash distance. Perhaps he might have waited until we had either finished eating, or had vacated the table? I had the quiche, and it made my stomach upset. When I wanted to pay my bill, the transaction was hindered by the cashier's lack of familiarity with the English language: "I'd like to pay my bill please." -mystified look passes over the face of the cashier. Honestly, it was like I had asked her to prove the Riemann Hypothesis, and it did take some time to get everything settled. As we exited, I could see that the next rush of diners was going to be in for a treat: the kitchen staff were ferrying loads of recently-purchased food items into the restaurant from Costco. In all fairness, this was my only visit to this restaurant, and perhaps I caught them with their pants down. However, this was my lugubrious experience with "Nanaimo's Treasure" on Commercial Street. read more

When I walked into Mon Petit Choux it reminded me of cafe's I have eaten at in France. The small marble top tables, the colours and of course the smells. My first thought was, will the quality be the same as the old country? To my surprise it is. The baked goods offered here are well worth paying for. I highly recommend the the almond croissants, the quiche, salad, muesli, bee stings, and the baguettes. I'm sure they have many more amazing offerings. I just haven't been here enough to try them all. I grew up in Nanaimo and have seen the city change so much over the years. Especially regarding the evolution of the variety of restaurants being run.
