Cute, charming little breakfast cafe in Chemainus. The menu has a great assortment of hot foods and pastries. Service was fantastic - they even gave my son a new plate of food when the salt shaker lid came off and spilled salt all over his food. I tried the Chemainus bowl- potatoes, braised beef and poached eggs- it was delicious. The traditional breakfast with eggs, potatoes, sausage and toast was also great. A nice spot for breakfast, lunch or a snack. They have ample seating inside, and a few seats outside as well. Right in the heart of downtown Chemainus, it was definitely a busy spot. I came in for an iced coffee and it was a perfect drink to walk around and explore. read more

Wonderful hot breakfast, which is not readily available in this town. Delicious plate of bacon, eggs, toast, and veggies (potatoes and peppers) with a fresh fruit cup. The coffee is so good too. Had never heard of this little gem but when we saw the menu we just had to give it a try. The avocado bacon poached egg with hollandaise on toasted focaccia bread was scrumptious . I had a toasted crossaint with egg salad and sure was tasty , love the fresh fruit with both we will be back. This is a very charming cafe located on a busy street where other cafes/eateries are located. The cashier, server, and kitchen staff were pleasant and helpful. Our family looked at the menu (which is written on a large blackboard) and unanimously decided to go with their eggs Benedict. Our gravlax salmon eggs Benny(with a choice of soft, medium or hard poached egg) and it was delicious. My poached eggs were soft and the golden, runny yolk was the star of the show. A generous slice(or should I say "slab"?) of house made salmon gravlax and hollandaise sauce completed the dish. Our son had the classic ham Benny and baked potato which he literally inhaled. We also had a choice of fresh tomatoes or a cup of fresh fruit (pears, sliced bananas, blueberries, strawberries) to accompany our Bennys. Other items on the menu included soup, waffles, panini, and crab/scallop cakes (compared to the other cafes in town, the prices here are fairly reasonable). They also sell local homemade jams, soup and stew kits. If you're stopping by Chemainus, this place is worth checking out for breakfast, brunch and lunch! read more

I am very fussy about my lattes and am always hesitant to order at a cafe I am not familiar with, but my almond milk latte was perfect. This cafe was full of owl designs. The owner of this cafe must love owls a lot. Every single owl design matched every single corner at the cafe. The atmosphere of the cafe was very comfortable and it provided a home 'sweet' home feeling. The menu was listed on the wall. The chef's name Jacky Lai was listed at the bottom of the menu. The server was very friendly. We ordered our food at the cashier and the server would bring the food and drinks to our table. We ordered a breakfast panini, BLT benny and whole wheat waffles as well as three cups of latte and a cup of regular coffee. The latte was very smooth and it had a stronger coffee flavour. It was a perfect latte. All of the food was excellent especially that the presentation of each dish was beautiful. We loved how the chef cooked the eggs. The eggs were soft and we could eat their flavour and texture in our mouths! The waffles were crispy outside and soft inside. We just enjoyed the meals at this cafe. The chef really put his effort to create such beautiful dishes of breakfast! We could not believe we could find such a great cafe in such a small city of Chemainus! We highly recommend you try this cafe if you are in Chemainus. We saw Willow Street Cafe (WSC) that was at the opposite side of Owl's Nest. We almost went WSC for breakfast, but after looking at WSC's menus, we did not like their breakfast options plus they cost more. Going to Chemainus is really a good choice! read more

Ive come here at least once a week to read my newspaper and have breakfast and occasionally soup and yummy scone. There soups are homemade as is the baking. Service can be slow if busy but usually only about 10-15 min wait. I find their food exceptional and service friendly and always with a smile. This is a great place for all day very yummy breakfast/brunch! To the person who complained about water. When you place your order at the counter, turn around and help yourself to water!!!! Really! Some people flabbergast me. I've posted a photo of the water for all to see. About the food - excellent! As good as it gets! I've had the eggs and bacon that is very good. Meaty bacon (note in the photo there are 2 slices but it comes with 3, I ate one before I took the photo!) , eggs cooked to order beautifully (easy over). Nice thick crusty grain bread. Also I have had the very delicious and tasty waffles. The waffles are a pleasant surprise. Light, fluffy with warm fruit topping with toasted almonds and some sort of delectable spice that had me gobbling the lot to try and discern what it was. Service was prompt and courteous. The decor is very lovely with Owls everywhere. The outside seating is cozy and I love the "pallet garden" that is in the alleyway seating. I asked for water when my water was taken and the water contained was particularly filled 25 minutes later! The party of 4 behind me tool 50 minutes to receive their meals. Excellent little gem in the heart of Chemainus that serves great food, including quite a few gluten free dishes as well. We had the cowichan bowl - delicious sweet potato hash with beef brisket, eggs and hollandaise sauce - fabulous! and the classic eggs benny - excellent job! The yogurt parfait is made with home made granola and good yogurt, the muffins are fresh made, and did I mention they have gluten free treats here as well? They have a nice selection of teas that come in big pots so you don't have to keep refilling. The menu isn't huge, but there is a good spread of choices for everyone. Everything here is made from scratch, so expect it all to be good, but don't expect it to be very fast - the price you have to pay for quality. Highly recommended! read more

Firstly, this my only review of any establishment since the onset of covid...not that there has not been any bad food or situations...just none that annoyed and shocked me more then this! My partner and I arrived for a quick snack and coffee., opting to sit outside. As I sat outside, my partner went in and ordered. We got our muffins in a to-go bag. I assumed he would have been gone through the covid protocols to order and was told the coffees would be brought out to us. The one young woman who took the order had said in order to stay We would need to go through the covid protocols but when another young lady came outside and gave us our coffees, we had no one ask us for ID etc. And not 5 min later the first young woman came out and blurted this , " I TOLD you YOU couldn't sit here" and then went in. We were flabbergasted! Both my partner and I had our ID and Vaccination cards at the ready for them. I was absolutely SHOCKED , embarrassed and angry that THIS is they way they would treat their customers. One young lady was pleasant but clearly they did NOT communicate well to each other nor to us. How we were spoken to, was TOTALLY unnecessary. There were MANY Decent ways she could have spoken to us... her angry, accusatory way was NOT professional Nor Warranted. The place was decorated in a very charming and eclectic fashion, with lots of details to look at... which is good, because the service, as stated in many other reviews, was quite slow. However, I'd say the food was worth the wait! We got hot sandwiches to go, and they were still nice and warm by the time we sat down to eat at Transfer Beach. The chicken club panini was excellent, crispy and generous with the filling. As good as it was, though, it was no match for the tuna melt! Not something I'd normally order in a restaurant, as I figure I can make it myself, but I can't make it like that! We enjoyed a great breakfast here. We split the rather large Cowichan Bowl, sort of a shredded beef hash with poached egg and hollandaise sauce, easily large enough for the two of us.
