Hands down best Chinese in the city! Less expensive and far better quality then most all places i've been to in town. Highly recommend the beef chow fun, the cashew chicken and the shrimp kow. I don't have a tolerance for spicy foods and asked for my mongolian beef to be on the mild side, it was perfect. If you are looking for a nice, light soup definitely start with the veggie soup! This place is such a delight! I usually order the Moo Shoo veggie without the wraps (it is delicious - the plum sauce is fantastic, and I don't miss the messy wraps when I eat it with rice) but I felt like something different this time. I called before placing my online order to confirm what could be made vegan. The gentleman on the phone confirmed that anything on the (vast) vegetarian menu could be made vegan! I've been going to Mon Lung since the late 80's for delicious Chinese food that has never, ever disappointed. The quality is consistent, prices are reasonable and the service is good. Many of Mon Lung's customers are long time patrons. The owners are very nice people. I live farther away but still make the worthwhile trek. Street parking is challenging and the restaurant itself is fairly small but that should not be a deterrent to anyone. DoorDash does provide delivery service to anyone who prefers dining in. read more

If it was possible to rate this place ZERO stars, then I would. The service is so horrible. I went with my friend for a fast meal and we ordered a small order of chicken and rice. When our food arrived it was all in to-go bags. I told the server we didn't order to go and he said you can't eat in the resturant unless you order a large, so he kicked us out rudely pointing to the door saying we had to eat outside(even though the resturaunt was empty). I was furious and asked for a refund but that wasn't allowed. He was so rude and unbelievably mistreated us. I'm never going back there again. Not to mention the food was greasy and flavorless. This is my favorite American-style Chinese restaurant, and I always visit when I'm in Chicago. I have only ever dined in, and have never had less than a five-star experience. The service at this family-owned restaurant is always friendly and prompt, and the food is outstanding. They will make almost anything vegetarian (hot and sour soup, egg rolls, etc.) if you ask. Ordered take out on a Saturday night. Tried this place for the first time. Mongolian beef. Sesame chicken. Fried rice and crab Rangoon. Staples, I think in fast food Chinese. The Mongolian beef was tender but had too many onions and didn't have that delicious umami flavor I look for that makes it pop. The crab Rangoon was super soggy and almost stale like it was an order that got left behind from an earlier order so got shipped into ours. How lucky we are :( The sesame chicken was overly breaded. Overly sweet. Had an orange flavor like it was orange chicken with some sesame seeds thrown on it. It would have been nice for the seeds to be toasted. It also tasted like it was fried in the same oil that egg rolls and the crab Rangoon and other fried appetizers. All in the same oil. All day. Every day. All day. Day after day. The same oil. Over and over. Yuck. And the fried rice was bland. With nothing but bamboo sprouts. So disappointing. I have yet to find a decent fast food Chinese take out place in the neighborhood. read more

If Mon Lung was in NYC it would be more of a 3 star joint since every street in NYC has a decent to fantastic Americanized- Chinese place. However, since Chinese food in Chicago is typically disgusting - Mon Lung gets an auto-5 star rating as it's the only Chinese place in the city worth going to (aside from a trip to Chinatown for more authentic fare). I have been to Mon Lung in the past and didn't think it was that great. I decided to give it another try a few Sundays ago. I went in and ordered carryout from the counter because I was on my way home. I ordered egg rolls and an order of shrimp and broccoli. I wanted to change the white rice to fried rice. I was told that wasn't possible even if I paid extra. That really frustrated me because I really can't stand white rice. I have also never been to a Chinese restaurant that wouldn't allow that substitution. The food is just ok and due to the whole rice issue, I probably won't be back. read more

Soup and and Mongolian beef (I always judge a Chinese restaurant by how well they prepare this dish) and the won ton in the soup was very soggy and falling apart. Lived by this place for a few years, and this place keeps getting worse. It seems like they cut every corner possible in making their food. I order a large Mon Lung Beef and it's almost all green peppers and onions, most of it goes into the trash. I don't know what they add to their stir fry sauce, but it's thick, goopy Chinese food. It's not pleasant to eat and you feel gross afterward. Yuck. Taste your own food, please. You have to see that something is wrong. read more

I ordered to go from this place, the food was ready very quickly and the service was really friendly. I had Crab Rangoon and Pepper Garlic Chicken and my boyfriend has some sort of BBQ beef something. The Crab Rangoon is really good, light and creamy filling and crisp pastry that wasn't oily. My chicken was really great, the black bean sauce is excellent. the BBQ beef was just ok. The food is good, expected Chinese take out, nothing too special, but good enough. read more

So far, the best American-style Chinese food that I've had. Still looking for a place that does the same style as the bulletproof glass joints is NYC, but no luck so far. Bonus points for the wonton soup, the light breading on the sesame chicken (though, the sauce was more like sweet and gingery than sesame), and the excellent szechuan green beans. Minus points for the hot and sour - it was a little too vinegary, almost like straight tabasco. Over all, not bad. The egg foo young seemed to popular, I will try that next time, and probably some moo shu. You don't see that on Chicago menus too often, but its one of my favorites. And my fellow yelpers were not kidding about the cops! This has got to be the safest place to eat in the city! read more

This Chinese restaurant serves the South Wicker Park/Noble Square/Dogpatch area with workmanlike versions of familiar Chinese dishes. It's the closest Chinese place this side of downtown, and not the best. The other day I ordered chicken chop suey (I wanted some vegetables with my protein), and it was pretty bland and flavorless for chop suey. Better that something be bland than foul tasting -- at least your burps will be bland. However, the main reason to hit this place is for their amazing potstickers. Doughy, juicy, porky and plump -- they're like the Chinese version of the pierogi. I told the waitress that they should open up a place just for dumplings like these. I also suggested that they should also serve dim sum at this hypothetical dumpling establishment. Her response was that the people in the area (primarily working-class and Latino) have never even heard of dim sum. I retorted that if word got out that they opened a dim sum place, folks would flock to it. I mean, the West Town area is filled with savvy foodies who would gladly trek one neighborhood over for steamed buns, lotus rice wraps, shumai and tea -- just so long as they're good. And the pork dumplings at Mon Lung have the spark of potential greatness. I wish the same could be said of their pedestrian egg rolls. In fact most of their entrees are pretty pedestrian for being so fresh. They do use good, fresh veggies, and they do score points for attractive in-house presentation. Additionally, the lunch specials are an exceptional value. So if you are in the area and don't feel like trekking to Papajin or Takie Outit, Mon Lung will do. Just remember to order the potstickers, and you won't be as disappointed. read more
