The food tastes so fresh here and their boiled dumplings are absolutely awesome. My boyfriend got the noodle soup with beef and I had some it was ridiculously good and not very heavy. Was excited to try a new authentic Chinese restaurant in the Newark area. The menu seemed promising with some of our favorite hard to find dishes such as pork kidney, jelly fish, and chicken feet. Mom's Kitchen touts itself as specializing in North Chinese cuisine yet significantly lacked in flavorful spices associated with this region. Optimistically hope that our dishes were simply dumbed down, as may happen with new Caucasian patrons. Sadly the General Tso seeking variety sets a poor standard. I was very pleased with the service. Everything that was ordered from the kitchen came out super hot we had to wait for the food to cool down and even getting to the last bite everything remained hot. The sweet and sour pork was great and the beef stew was excellent. I'll be back next week to reorder the soup and try something new. read more

I'm confused by all the great reviews for this place. The reviews were the reason I decided to order for the first time, and I should have gone elsewhere. I ordered online, but when I got there, I was told that they didn't have our order, so I ordered again and ended up waiting for almost an hour for our food. When I got home, I realized that they screwed up TWO items in our order. Instead of orange beef, we received dark meat chicken, which neither of us like. They also forgot one of our appetizers, and the one correct appetizer we did received was absolutely flavorless. To top it off, the chicken in the chicken and broccoli had a weird texture. The only good thing I can say is that the portions are generous, but who wants large portions of food that doesn't taste good? Sadly, most of the food went in the trash. We'll go to Panda Express next time, because believe it or not, their food actually tastes better. read more

If you want authentic Chinese and Korean food this is the place to go. Keep in mind it's not the same food you get at your local Chinese restaurant and if you're not familiar with authentic food you should first and ask questions. At first I wasn't sure if I liked my food but the more I ate it the better it got. I had the chicken and peppers and it was real non breaded chicken, bone and all. The sauce was great too. My husband had twice cooked pork, I'm not a fan of pork but I tried the cabbage, and it was really good as well. I would recommend getting water with your meal because the seasoning is a little salty, but it is really good food. We would definitely go back. read more

Mom's Kitchen host some truly delicious authentic Chinese food. The sauces and spices compliment the fresh ingredients and highlight the skill of the cooking. We received friendly and attentive service, and even got a couple of complementary appetizers from the kitchen before our main course arrived. We also had the opportunity to personally meet with the owner/chef after our meal. He truly cares about the quality of his food, and his passion for cooking shines through in the dishes he serves. My first visit was when a Chinese coworker wanted to show me authentic Chinese food instead of the American-Chinese fast food most people are used to, and this place surpassed her glowing recommendation and my own expectations. The food is amazingly seasoned cooked - the taste is light but flavorful and lets you to taste the ingredients, which are very fresh. Portions are generous and filling, and the complementary spicy potato slices and sea weed salad are perfect between bites or to keep your mouth entertained until the main dish arrives. Even the tea is worth a mention, as the last time I went instead of the normal green tea, it was floral and aromatic - more than a step above what most places offer. I took a group of three housemates who were understandably hesitant that food too authentic might be weird, but I am happy to say they left convinced and as hooked as I am. It's a convenient location for lunch or dinner (they even offer take-out), and the prices are fantastic for the amount and quality that you get. I usually spend about $10 when I go for lunch by myself and leave fuller than some dinners manage (or with enough leftovers for a second lunch). Let me tell you, I have been eating Hibachi for years, and this place is tops! Small, quaint, no grill, food prepared in the back, and it is good! I had filet w/fried rice and a few sushi rolls, man the flavor was remarkable! They had a spicy mayo sauce that goes on anything that was the best! Brooke, the waitress, was the absolute best at her craft, working the crowd, and as pleasant as you could ask for, and quite knowledgeable as an American could be working in a Japanese restaurant! Ok down here for work and I'm a Brooklyn native. I grew up 2 blocks from sunset park a large Chinese neighborhood. Well let me tell you this place is LEGIT true AUTHENTIC Chinese food!!! Some dishes have a wonderful combination taste of Korean Food and Chinese Food as the side sliced potato and seaweed salad, especially the side salad is free while having a lunch special here. There are other traditional Chinese foods, you may hear before, which it is not normal to find at other Chinese restaurant, so they are really worth to try here such as homemade steamed buns (mantou), steamed pork buns (baozi), and homemade steamed/fried dumplings. You even can buy a bag of homemade frozen buns and dumplings and make them at your home. I know they sell quick-frozen food as well. If you want to taste "Real" Chinese Food and experience a normal Chinese family's food culture. I am sure that Mom's Kitchen is a great place for you to learn it. read more

Went with my wife for a late lunch.Ordered off the regular menu though. First thing to say is that the sausage buns are very different from the Hum Bows I have had in Vancouver, BC -- where most of the restaurants are southern and south-eastern Chinese cuisine. The buns were excellent and deliciously different. If they had been a little fresher and hotter they would have been absolutely perfect! Frankly, they saved the meal. (+++) Food wasn't bad, just wasn't anything to yell about either. Specifically asked for them to spice up my noodle dish, and it was still very bland.(-) I could also taste that the oil was old. (--) My wife's meal tasted better than mine, but I could still taste old oil. (-) Portions were large, but would have preferred brown or long-grain rice instead of white. read more
