Yes this is the most authentic Chinese food I have had in the area. I hesitated to chime in on this because I don't know if its everyone's cup of tea. Its basically for Chinese people looking for their grandparents cooking. But it seemed they have great take out business and are loved so it might be a bigger audience than I thought. Thank you Yelpers that pointed out the must get dishes, and I do agree: scallion pancake wrapped beef and the spicy fish filet soup are so good. I don't think their pea shoots are on the menu, I always just ask for a quick stir fry of it. And they are amazing. I had three skewers and one pork cabbage bun. The lamb and the beef skewers were so-so and kind of greasy. The eggplant skewer were greasy too, and there was a lot of garlic on it. The pork cabbage bun was average. The server was nice, but he did not understand that much English. I had a soda with dinner. About an hour after dinner I drank four cups of water. It was salty!!!! Review updated. We discovered that sometime in the past few months, ownership of Mom's Kitchen changed. With this change came a rather dramatic change in the menu. Whereas Mom's Kitchen had previously been a fairly unique Chinese restaurant by offering NE Chinese cuisine, that is no longer the case. They didn't characterize the food by region that I could see, but I think it is now more Hunan (and perhaps Szechuan). It's still authentic Chinese food, not Americanized Chinese food, just not what we came here for for many years. Gone are all of our NE Chinese favorites. No warning, no new management or new menu sign on the door, nothing. The food we did get was fine. It came quickly and the staff offered helpful hints about how to eat it. Service was a bit slow, but that's always been a Mom's Kitchen hallmark. We were not offered chopsticks until I asked...which was the opposite experience of before. They did indicate the menu changed due to management changes only after we asked. They assured me the chef had 20 years of experience and I'd like the food better...that's fine, but I didn't come for this particularly regional cuisine. To the chef's compliment, he was around and helpful as well. I'm not willing to give them the five stars the old Mom's Kitchen earned. A nice authentic Chinese restaurant tucked away in a shopping center is usually unheard of! It is pricier than the Chinese-American counterparts, but what do you expect? It can easily rival some of the more popular restaurants in Philly's Chinatown. It's quite convenient to have good Chinese food so close to home in Delaware, as opposed to driving all the way to Philly. On a side note: I love Thom P.'s review from 09/18/2018. "Ordered something too spiced to eat." Why would you order something spicy when it's obvious you can't handle spicy food? No restaurant makes their food untolerably spicy unless it's a food challenge. So it's obvious you are a troll. read more

This place is pretty amazing, and a surprisingly good find for this area. This is not the typical Americanized Chinese food with the overly sweet and gloppy sauces. The sauces are much lighter and the menu selections have so much more to offer than your basic gloppy orange chicken type dishes. I can't find a menu online that looks like the one we ordered from (mid-May 2018), but we were a party of five and ordered a variety of items. We had some type of rolled bread with meat, lamb with cumin, a stir-fried pork dish, spinach, a cooked lettuce dish, squid, and something else. Everything was delicious! If I lived in this area, I'd eat here or get takeout at least a few times a month. We chatted with the owner (he said to call him Tony since he thought his real name in Chinese would be too difficult for us). He was quite the character! Very personable! The restaurant is fairly small but has a couple of large round tables for groups. The place was also very clean (including the restroom). If you read some of the other reviews, it sounds like there has been a change of ownership somewhere along the way over the years, but in mid-May 2018, this place was pretty darn good. Also you might notice some other reviewers commenting that they were the only non-Asians eating there. The same was true for us the night we went, but I think that's a testimonial to the food being a truer form of Asian cooking. Again - it was delicious! What a great find! Who knew the Chinese food scene was this poppin' in Delaware. Both my girlfriend and I agree that the authentic Chinese food in the Newark area is significantly better that the DC area (where we are from). While the number of places to eat can't compare to DC, the few that are here are absolute gems and Mom's Kitchen is one of them. As the name would imply, the food caters towards dishes that recreate home cooking. Food that takes dedication, time, and passion. We ordered a variety of braised meats, pig trotters, and pastries. With each first bite I immediately thought about my moms cooking and how she use to make each dish when I was younger. The decor is a little outdated and its definitely not a spot you'd want to go for a first date/trying to impress someone. After a long day or work however, its the perfect pick me up. Well, I have been here like ten times, and ordered many chief recommended dishes. Sadly each time I was disappointed. Portion is ok and service is fine, problem is the taste. It is not authentic and not very fresh. Plus the taste and quality is never consistent. I really want to love this place bc there is no much option around the area but I give up. Whatever this was, it is not Chinese and shouldn't be listed as so by Yelp. I ordered their House Favorite as recommended by the waitress. It was spicy chicken. Every bit of the chicken included bits of bone, whole bone and cartilage. It's like they took the chicken legs and cut across the bone causing it to splinter and leave bone bits throughout the dish. The serving looked large but was less than 50% of the dish was the meat. When you consider the actual proportion of edible food received, it was overpriced. Mom's Kitchen, as several other reviewers have mentioned is a very authentic North East (DongBei) Chinese Restaurant. North Eastern Food is famous for an obsession with big, meaning big servings, big flavor, and is a far far cry from the small delicate and sweet cuisine of Southern China and Fujian or Wuxi. Dongbei people are also fond of Sichuan cuisine which is well represented on the menu. Decor is nice, nothing special, but not hole-in-the-wall-Chinese takeout. The menus are in English, and the waitstaff speaks English, ok I'd guess. The famous north eastern sweet and sour pork, or 锅巴肉 guobarou is highly recommended. Green beans were very fresh and crispy. The fish boiled in oil 水煮鱼is excellent but may be too spicy so make sure you mention how hot you want. You can point out the chili pepper heat index in the menu if you want. Most of their business is the Chinese community, who are big spenders on dining out, so this place isn't exactly cheap, especially if you are going after fish dishes. One reviewer mentioned not liking the dumpling sauce. Northeast dumplings are served with vinegar and soy, but generally locals prefer vinegar over the soy. You are better of mixing your own sauce with the little bottles at each table. Going back with my wife for fish tonight! read more

Authentic, original and delicious. No cookie cutter vegetables. I had the sizzling tofu platter. The presentation of a sizzling platter arriving to the table was amazing. I was surprised. This place used to be a hidden gem.. now it is a hit or miss. Sometimes the food is really superb and sometimes it is subpar. I particularly enjoy the avocado rolls and vegetarian rolls which have avocado, japanese radish, cucumber and carrots. Their miso soup is usually enjoyable. The green seaweed salad is good. Hibachi vegetables with steamed rice is my favorite. I often get extra sides of zucchini and onions, which are steamed and seasoned perfectly. I love the pink dipping sauce. If you eat in, the hot pots are a great choice. Sometimes they have parties and the space is rented out by different clientele. When you go there and you see a whole bunch of Asian, non-English speaking people.. you know the place is legit. The staff is pretty nice and cordial. They delivery!!! It's in a shopping plaza with a bunch of other stuff, so you could potentially go shopping while you wait for your food to be ready. There is a cool fish shop at the end of the plaza, they have fish from all over the world. You can buy or just browse, and the staff is very knowledgeable. Now since I'm a vegetarian, I typically haven't had issues with the food, anyways not as much as my carnivore/omnivore counterparts. Do not get the item that has "steak," you will be sourly disappointed.. it is not steak, it is steakum. The seafood is hit or miss, in particular the shrimp.
