The middle of nowhere with the greatest southern hospitality I've ever experienced. The service was one of a kind, polite and attentive staff full of enthusiasm and character. They were very welcoming and made our dog completely comfortable being there. If that wasn't enough the food, fried chicken and pork loin was delicious. It was Sunday so it's the only plate served but it's the only plate I'd order after having it. The fried chicken was one of the best I've had. I really enjoyed the old school feel and all of the antiques, not to mention the live music which made me feel at home. I loved this place and recommend anyone passing to stop and try it out. read more

Had a great time, enjoyed wonderful food and soaked up the history at Sengelmann Hall yesterday. Mom and I are in Schulenburg this week to tour the painted churches and could not pass up having schnitzel here after seeing the restaurant featured on the Texas Day Tripper. The schnitzel was tasty and the crust was excellent, the sauerkraut balls were very tasty as well. Never had such a thing before, but I'm going to try to make them at home. The service was spot on and a side dish of history made it even better. When you visit, be sure to go upstairs to see the dance hall. read more

This place was such a great find in a small little German town (Schulenburg) halfway to Houston from SATX! We met a friend here and I was so pleasantly surprised when we walked in. For one, they are dog friendly which we are so grateful for! Secondly, they were one of the few restaurants open on Sunday/the day we went. I'm not sure if it was due to a parade/festival going on! Either way I'm glad we ate here. On Sunday they are only open until 2:30pm and they only serve one meal (Fried chicken, pork, mashed potatoes and string beans w/carrots). My hubby and I shared it. It was absolutely delicious! The fried chicken was perfectly crisp and flavorful and the meat was tender and moist! Everything was very flavorful. The building itself is historic and has so much character and charm. There was a live musician that made the ambiance so welcoming as well. Service was wonderful from the moment we walked in. They allowed us to sit and wait for my friend without rushing us while still being attentive to our needs and bringing us drinks. Overall wonderful experience! Passing thru and found this one on yelp. Man what a find. The place is located in a. Entrap area of town, has that old town feeling, and old town memorabilia. The staff is super friendly, they have a great menu selection, and the food does not disappoint. I and other had the chicken schnitzel with delicious mashed potatoes, fried okra, etc., other the cowboy burger and man that thing looked amazing. If you're ever nearby this town, you better make a detour and come to this spot. read more

A very fun discovery! I got hungry while driving from Wimberley to Houston, and found this charming dance hall / bar / restaurant located less than five minutes away from Interstate-10. On Sunday they have a one-item menu -- called "The Sunday Plate". On this day that meant a plate holding two pieces of fried chicken, two small pork chops, a scoop of mashed potatoes, and a scoop of squash casserole. Yum yum. I Would like to return and test out the regular evening menu and live music. read more

Came here on a Sunday when most of the other places were closed. Glad I did. They serve a plate lunch (fixed menu) with fried chicken, pork cutlet, mashed potatoes and green beans. Just like grandma used to make! My daughter is vegetarian and they even gave her a special veggie plate. Will come back when in town for sure. read more

The food was tasty. I would have liked more German options, as that was the reason for driving 40 minutes to get there. It took a lot longer to be served than we are used to waiting. I was fairly peckish and nearly walked out before we (25 minutes after ordering) received our appetizer. Finally the appetizer arrived! The Bierocks had an understated flavor that snuck up on you. The spicy mustard was a great addition to the dish. It would have been nice if it had been easier to cut, though. Perhaps it would have been easier to eat as a finger food, but I was unsure of the table manners expected with this dish so I went with knife and fork. Our main dishes were delivered in short order after the appetizer. My medium rare steak arrived as a very well seasoned medium well. At least the flavor was good and the mushrooms and onions on top were fabulous. My husband and son enjoyed their meals. My husband's opinion is that the food was worth the wait. I disagree. I don't think that any food ever created is worth waiting that long for! The restaurant was nearly empty. There was absolutely No Reason for it to take so long to serve us! read more

Stopped at Momma's in Schulenburg while on a business trip. Even though short staffed they got us right in and took great care of us. Wife has a really good burger with fries, I had a salad. Burger was excellent, and enough fries for the both of us. For dessert we had a great cherry cobbler with ice cream - but just one, since it is a large portion. 5 thumbs up on dessert. Even with a large party with kids behind us, the noise level was fine - we were both concerned when they sat us. No problems, since it is a large building. So nice to see folks taking an older building and remodeling it for a modern use. read more

There was only one plate being served on Sundays (the day we were coming through) by the pictures on YELP we thought we'd be getting Italian food but not at all. The food was served on paper plates. The servers were wearing very worn out clothing. They were nice, prompt, and did the job well. The building is beautiful. Very well preserved. Well ventilated (not too hot or cold) But it would have been nice if there was actually a menu to choose our food. read more

Absolutely love this place! Live music, good food, exceptional staff and so much history. Really neat atmosphere and it feels like you've walked back in time when you walk thru the door. Food was great and very reasonable prices! We asked the hostess (who happens to be the librarian too) to tell us the history of the building and she shared so much about it with us and showed us historic photos of what it looked like so long ago. We were staying the night in Schulenburg to get an early morning start at the water park the next day. We found Momma's on Yelp and decided to give it a shot. The food was excellent and the portions could feed two! Even the kids meal portions were bigger than expected. I got the hamburger steak with mashed potatoes and grilled zucchini. Mom got the chicken schnitzel with mashed potatoes and fried okra. Everything seamed to made from scratch. All the food had excellent flavor. We sat a long time before anyone came to check on us, in fact we were just about ready to leave when someone realized that we weren't being waited on. We ordered the Bierocks, and that was the best thing we had. Our waiter was a nice guy, but the service was very slow. I had the pork schnitzel, which was just okay. My wife and I visited last week, got a nice tour and some history, and enjoyed our drinks and food. Even tho it was Wednesday and very busy, each staff member took a few moments to visit with us, laugh at each others jokes and share family stories, and just made us feel at home. We stopped here on our way to San Antonio. Based on the reviews we had high expectations. First, they only had 2-3 things from each menu available and most of those things were either burgers or pizza. Our party ordered a burger, a pizza, and a schnitzel. We sat for approximately an hour and ten minutes before our food came out. The service also left a lot to be desired. The restaurant staff was either very distracted or the restaurant was all around understaffed. The price of the food was a bit pricier than what I would have assumed it would be for the type of food we ordered. With all of those things combined, I would probably not stop here again. read more

We stopped here for a quick bite to eat on a trip to San Antonio. Our server was a super sweet, pretty young lady (I didn't get her name) who told us she lived 40 miles away near Victoria. We rolled into Schulenburg, which is closer to Austin than Houston surprisingly, with our hopes high for good food and good dancing. Although the sign says that 2699 people live in Schulenburg there was not a soul, nor a car on the road to be seen. We ended up finding Senglemann Hall on accident, but there's no way you could miss that wonderful outside decor that almost looks like a fun-house from a cheesy carnival movie. The inside is just nice to sit and look at ( not surprising as the wife of the owner is the artist commissioned to do the artworks at Bush International Airport) and get a feel for a what a grand establishment of the 1890's in Texas would be. So, what do they do? They have kick-ass, reasonably priced, life threatening food. Meatloaf sandwich wrapped in multiple pieces of bacon? Good? Yes! Healthy? Negative! That goes for everything else from the Latkes with sauerkraut to the banana pudding. Their pre-prohibition cocktails were a welcome reprieve from the heat, and they were hand crafted with love from the bartenders. They also had a wonderful looking beirgarten that we just couldn't bear to try out since it was 1 billion degrees outside. The dance hall upstairs also has music most days, and you can check the schedule online, but they often cost a couple of dollars. Unfortunately the day we rolled through the cost was 20$ per person, and we just couldn't swing it then. a minor flaw in a wonderful experience. The service is kind of slow, but its friendly and helpful. There's a lot of love in everything from the cracking paint on the walls which just makes you feel all warm inside. read more

Sengelmann Hall is the best and cleanest restaurant in Schulenburg, Texas! We had read about this venue in Texas Monthly and Texas Highways, but had never had time to stop over.... But, my husband and I decided to travel down I-10 so we could visit this legendary dance hall. We went to Sengelmann's new Bakery for fresh fruit kolaches (i recommend the dewberry and pineapple while they are in season) and then walked over to the restaurant for a nice, leisurely lunch. Since we had decided to spend the night, we tasted a few pre-prohibition cocktails (i loved the Moscow Mule and he loved the Southside), and ordered up some fried pickles & mushrooms and a large macaroni & cheese with white truffle oil....yum!!! then, we shared the fresh salmon with champagne dill sauce and garlic mashed potatoes! The waiter said that it the fish is literally over-night-ed (is that a word? ha) to Schulenburg from Santa Monica, California and we believe it! it was sooo good. We split a small Dessert Sampler and the baker featured apple strudel, a parfait with fresh berries and Grand Marnier and a mini chocolate cupcake. it was perfect for sharing! We ended up ordering a dozen cupcakes l before leaving! (yep! that's how good their desserts are!!) The people who work there are really nice....even the manager gave us a ghostly tour of the entire dance hall, which was really interesting! We were impressed with the original decor.....beauty of the walls and bars....and the fact that the owners and staff have managed to capture and maintain its splendor after all those years. There is even a bullet hole in the saloon! Definitely worth the trip to downtown Schulenburg! Sengelmann Hall is one in a million and we definitely plan on going back soon! read more

We usually hit Schulenburg as our halfway mark from Houston to San Antonio. Franks is the spot most people see from the freeway, but it leaves a cafeteria impression in my mind. I convinced my mom to try Sengelmann Hall on a Saturday for lunch. The place is very antique looking with hardwood floors. The tables sit large groups and it is very reminiscent of days past, when eating was communal. Everything we ordered from schnitzel, to a cheeseburger, to pizza was very tasty. I got the Cowboy Burger and didn't leave a bite to share. The yam fries were particularly great.. Where the regular fries although fresh cut, needed some seasoning. This will certainly be our new stop, if they happen to be open when we roll through town. We left quite satisfied. 4 stars only because more gravy was an up charge. read more

When we first arrived we were a bit concerned that it would take a while for us to get our order because they had a huge group of Corvette Club members there. All the Corvettes parked outside was enough to make anyone drool and it turns out the food was as well! We didn't have to wait long for our food and the pizza was really good!! We took a big group here. The hall is amazing for all of its history and it makes for a great atmosphere. We had a mix of orders. We started with a couple of orders of the battered potatoes and bierrock, a stuffed pastry. Really good. I settled on the pork schnitzel, and it was great. The batter was seasoned with rosemary and the gravy had a hint of lemon. There was no complaint from any of our group and there were several take away boxes with left overs. read more

This was highly recommended, so we tried it. The place was uncomfortably cold and strangely dark. They have a single hanging light bulb in the bar seating area which is kind of strange. The burger was good but "we're out of catsup" and "we're out of dressing" was disappointing. The way this was spoken so highly of is odd, yet it didn't seem as though this was just an off day. This restaurant/bar has such a cool country vibe that I wish we lived closer to visit more often. The place is located downtown, among a couple of antique stores and shops, and across from the railroad tracks. And yes, occasionally, you can hear the train whistle when the train comes through. Not intrusive, though a bit loud. The menu includes Texas favorite CFS, as well as soups, salads, and burgers. We've had all of these and they've all been very good. The inside dining area is an old saloon w relics to explore and an old antique store on the side where we bought a couple of treasures. There's live music on the weekends and an outside patio out back. Everyone is friendly and the old country vibe is welcoming. Lots of folks in the bar area after 8 pm, just hanging & talking, so great place to meet locals, too. read more

Second and final visit to this institution. Wednesday music enjoyment but over an 1hour to get food. Tried again today. Trying to recover from stomach virus, I wanted some soup to eat. I called to ask about the soups and was told tomato basil, chicken and cheddar/broccoli. We were to told to seat ourselves and waited over 15 minutes to even be noticed by a wait staff. The soup bar was very dissatisfying. The chicken was actually chicken and dumplings and there wasn't any at the bar. The cheddar broccoli had bottom of the pot remnants. Apologetically, the waitress brought us some soup from the back. We never got a check so we went to the register. Apologetically, she offered us a to go soup for our wait. Overall, this was a terrible experience. Wait time for service, meal delivery, and overall offerings was something that needs to be apologized for. Won't be going back and don't know how much longer this place will last or be another historical by gone. read more
