I wanted to thank the staff for making my last two Friday's feel special. I am new to Texas and have been wanting to come and try out this spot. I'm also a first time mom and not working currently so my funds are low for spending. The staff (shout out to the ones I've met so far) Kevin, Brittany and Terrance took the time to explain how the cafe works. so many delicious options, I went with the jalapeno popper omelette which did not disappoint. Brittany helped navigate a coffee I would enjoy and I did! Try the Vietnamese iced coffee so good. my daughter and I sat outside and met Terrance, who came right up and introduced himself. made sure we were doing good and dj'd some great tunes. This place is great. I ran out of food while camping at a nearby 5-day music festival so I drove into Smithville and had breakfast here. It's entirely donation based. You place your order and then take a seat and when they bring out your food, you get a little pocket to put cash into to pay whatever you want. The food was great and it benefits addiction recovery. My only complaint is that they really really really need to put fans on the patio cause I was swatting away flies the entire time I was eating. I wouldn't eat outside again. I went for breakfast and had a 3-meat omlette which I actually couldn't even finish cause I was full. It was a little weird getting the apple juice in a cup full of ice but I guess I could have gotten more if I wanted it. I'd like to back for lunch sometime. read more

This is a can't-miss if you're in the area. Everyone that works here is very friendly and helpful, and the food is delicious!! I had the crab cake eggs benedict and it was perfect. Another 5 star experience @ the Comfort Cafe, Smithville! The cheeseburger was big and juicy, the patty melt was loaded with carmelized onions and the served on marble rye toast! Love everything this place stands for. This one is a little different from the location I went to in San Antonio as you order at the counter and they bring the food out & you pay afterwards for most items. Nobody really checked on us after our food & bill was dropped & I had to walk back to the front counter to pay. It's pay what you can with a suggested 15$ donation per entree- all the funds are going it back into facilitating programs to those who strive to recover. One thing I loved about SA location was hearing the story from our server about how she overcame addiction and what her "why" was. So I was a little sad not to get this interaction at the smithville location. Food was great, large servings forsure. Breakfast potatoes could have used a little more seasoning. The Vietnamese coffee was delish! However they don't have the large coffee selection at this location either and I sure was looking forward to a "flight" of iced coffees. This place was so delicious with a really extensive and impressive menu. We had Lemon ricotta pancakes, and the crabby Benedict. Both of which were amazing! They really piled the blueberries high on my pancakes. We also enjoyed their seasonal coffee options and both of which were incredible. I had a strawberry mocha with oat milk and my husband had their cold brew. The service was impressively attentive and willing to work with us on the PayPal option for paying since we didn't bring enough cash to cover their cash only operation. That is my only complaint about this incredible restaurant is that it's cash-only in an ever-changing cashless world. There is an ATM machine that's over a block away from the restaurant. I have had this establishment on my list to try out for a while now. Finally tried it Saturday morning with my family. They do accept cash only or check so make sure to come prepared. There are no prices on any of the food on the menu. Keep in mind they say donation as suggested $15 per plate. We ordered a pancake kids meal for my daughter and my husband orders a hash bfast and I ordered the blueberry compote pancakes and let me tell you, they did NOT miss! Everything was so fresh and hot. We love comfort Café in Smithville. The food is always good and the wait staff are very friendly. I will say that the pay system seems to confuse a lot of the elderly people in the area. It's strictly donation but they have a recommended amount which when we started going was $10 per plate. I have no idea if or how much it has gone up recently and I think better signage would help. Especially since they now have you come to the counter to place your order so you're really not very prepared when you get up there. Even after being there a couple of times, this last time was still confusing for me. But it's a very worthy cause and I applaud them for doing it and I will definitely go back! read more

Absolutely Amazing! So we decided to take a road trip to Smithville to see the sights and i am glad we did. After driving through the town, we noticed this eclectic restaurant with some art work outside. We stopped, parked and made our way inside. They continue to put out awesome tasting food. I'm always amazed how quickly it's done. This place has never disappointed and has become a family favorite when we have visitors in town. I like that they have indoor and outdoor seating options coloring placemats for the kids and a small book section if they want to read while they're waiting for their food. The concept is great, but not worth the headache/hunger. The only options that have been consistent are the sweet options. Which, I do not eat. I often have to go through the menu attempting to order multiple items, to be told they're out. Update the menu! It's on a chalk board. Had I known they were out of everything, we wouldn't have stood in line for half an hour to order, and the first part of our party wouldn't have paid, sticking us there. That last time I gave up and just ordered a side of the potato casserole, and it was raw. Including coffee and iced tea. It's rarely a "coffee shop". That last time, I had to go to the General Store to get coffee, because at noon they were out of everything but tap water. If you won't make iced tea after noon, maybe just close at noon. 2 hours to finally sit and watch everyone else eat and go back to work hungry. I doubt I'll ever return. It was great years ago, when I used to go. Always took visitors. In my opinion, you're better off going to Austin. And I hate Austin so much, I've been taking the back roads east of Taylor to go see my family in Georgetown, due to the urban sprawl when I can. While people disagree over politics, religion, sport and everything else on the planet, There is at least one point about which everyone agrees. Comfort Cafe is totally totally awesome. What's good about this place? The pro bono concept. The people. The art. And the amazing food. * * * Comfort Cafe is the social support and fundraising arm for Serenity Star - a sobriety organization in San Antonio and branches in Smithville and elsewhere in Texas. Whether or not Serenity Star is technically Alcoholics Anonymous or not - The spirit of the endeavor is Alcoholics Anonymous all the way. Since AA is the most effective substance abuse program on the planet, This connection alone would make them a force for good. Comfort Cafe has a meeting room for formal substance abuse sessions. The Cafe is meant to cover that expense, and cover the expenses of a rehab ranch for more extended treatments. It is also a "soup kitchen" which serves way better food than soup. Serenity Star does not charge for its services - unless you really want to pay. This includes eating at Comfort Cafe. You can walk in without a dime in your pocket ... Order everything from soup to nuts .. And you only pay what you can afford. At the end of the meal, they leave a little "cashbook" at your table - the type of item that a bill usually appears in. You can put in a zillion dollars. You can put in nothing. No one ever looks to see what is inside. So if times are rough, and you need to feed your family, You can give them a massive Sunday breakfast with all the trimmings and everything is on the house. And that breakfast will be fantastic. (More on the food later.) If you actually do put in money, it covers the expenses of the cafe. The rest goes to the rehabilitation ranch. Not surprisingly, the people who would design such a concept are as saintlike as you would think they would be. I talked to a number of them. They are all hardworking charismatic stars with a gift for gab and total charm. Bastrop is an artist's paradise - and Smithville is Bastrop East with cheaper rents. There are art galleries all over town. The town specialty is mosaic murals although there are plenty of good painters too. Comfort Cafe has two buildings and an outdoor courtyard with an entrance alley. All of the above have been decorated top to bottom with local art and with the murals. I think the artist who put the matching murals in the entrance alleyway is Stefanie Distefano. (If I am wrong, someone please send me a correction.) Her work is all over town and it is amazing. She made two face to face mosaic murals for the Comfort Cafe alleyway. Those double murals are absolutely spectacular and are not to be missed under any circumstance. Just seeing the Distefano mosaics is worth driving from Houston or Dallas, never mind driving from Austin. * * * Now this is Yelp. And Yelp is about the food. How is the food? O M G These are the absolute best breakfasts in the Central Texas area - bar none. Austin has nothing remotely close to what they serve at Comfort Cafe. Portions are enormous. The yogurt parfaits are served in a giant champagne glass the size of a salad bowl - and must have a pound of fresh fruit in them. I ordered "light" and just had strawberry crepes. These were three huge crepes totally filled with fresh strawberries - along with homemade caramel and mountains of whipped cream. The crepes were absolutely positively spectacular. My carnivorous partner in crime had a three meat scramble which virtually filled a whole dinner plate and was stacked high with meat. His blueberry pancakes had massive amounts of super large high quality fresh blueberries. Their house coffee can beat any yuppie coffee house in Austin. If these dishes don't appeal to you, (and you would be nuts not to order them yourself), The menu of dishes you can choose from is massive. They have vast numbers of breakfast items including all sorts of benedicts, egg dishes, and a spectacular looking waffle sampler. They also do burgers - which get a lot of action from the customers - a wide variety of hot and cold sandwiches - and a number of salads if you are feeling healthy. Basically, there is almost nothing you could want for a Texas breakfast or lunch that they don't have at Comfort Cafe. And you eat in a place with wonderful art, with wonderful people, and all of the proceeds go for a magnificent cause. * * * So what are you waiting for? Get yourself to Smithville! If you live in East Austin, this is not a problem. If you live in Cedar Park or Dripping Springs, take the drive. If you live in L.A. or North Carolina, get on a plane and get out here! We had another wonderful experience here today. It was a beautiful day, so we sat outside. My wife ordered her usual (she's in love with their western omelette), and this time I got the reuben. Both were very good. The breakfast potatoes are best if you order them "fully loaded (we didn't this time). They don't officially have waiters (you order at the counter), but the staff checked on us quite regularly and, as usual, we found them to need both friendly and accommodating. We end up donating extra money to the cause every time we come here. But it's our pleasure to do so. Today, I came in with Thing One & Two for breakfast after picking Thing Two up from camp. While it was not my first time here (nor my last), it was a first for the Things. What we got.... Crab-cake Benedict What is it? It's an English muffin topped with crab cake (where there's normally ham in traditional eggs Benedict), a sunny-side-up egg, hollandaise, and green onion. The crab cakes were delicious & tender with delicate eggs & lovely hollandaise. Bravo! Burger Thing One ordered a burger with mushrooms, fried egg and bacon. The well-done burger was grilled perfectly and loaded with fresh crisp bacon. It was obvious that this burger was made with love. Oreo-stuffed French Toast Thing Two ordered this sugary breakfast item. These Oreo waffles were light, fluffy, delicious, and filled with tasty Oreos inside. I absolutely love coming here as the mission is close to my heart. I never written a yelp review before but this is just ridiculous. We waited a hour in line just for them to tell us at the front counter, that they only accept cash. The whole time we were in line there was no signs or no heads up that they were only accepting cash. We went outside as we left and there was no signs or anything at the front door. My morning on Mother's Day was ruined with waiting in that line just to find out at the end we couldn't even eat here. Food was absolutely on point. I had a delicious Rueben sandwich with a side of the most amazing BLT pasta salad. My niece opted for two enormous waffles with Nutella, whipped cream and d strawberries. She was stuffed after only eating half her food. Atmosphere was down home comfort with lovely kind staff.
