10/15/2025: We stopped in for a late lunch when leaving Round Top. We were trying to avoid the RT art festival, so we opted for JW's in Carmine. The inside decor is all wood paneling. It's very country looking, so that was appealing. We started with the fried pickles for an appetizer to share. Our group was a party of 3. The pickles were a perfect split for us. The ranch served with the pickles had a tartar sauce undertone taste. It was pretty good. We all had the sweet tea and lemonade mix. It was refreshing. I ordered the regular JW's burger on a classic white bun. The burger was okay. There was no special seasoning to it. I wasn't able to order it medium. From the looks of it, it was "done", so that is a little too done for me. I like mine a little pink. They use leaf lettuce. I prefer shredded. The pickles on my burger were cut lengthwise, and 2 of the strips still had the outer skin on them. Not a fan of that. The fries were good. They had a nice crunch to them. The service was great at JW's. Our drinks were never empty, the food came out fast, and our waitress was very nice. You can't get better than country service. It was a nice change from Houston where everything is hustle and bustle. We all three split a piece of coconut pie. It was okay, but to be fair, I am not a pie person. My coworkers thought it was terrific. If I am out that way again and decide to stop in, I will order something different. Maybe the chicken fried steak. The neighboring table ordered it and it looked good! Our bill for the 3 of us was $71 and some change before tip. That seems on point for 1 appetizer, 3 drinks, 3 entrees, and 1 piece of pie. It was crowded, especially for a weekday after the lunch rush in the country, so they must be doing something right.

My family and I drove over here for dinner once evening during our stay in Burton. There is a small town feel to this restaurant. Nothing fancy, but the food is delicious and the service is courteous and attentive. We came in on a Tuesday evening and it was packed. Fortunately we got there earlier and were able to get seated immediately. Very family friendly as evidenced by the fact that they pulled an infant carrier stand out for our baby. I will say that the prices are on a steeper side; however, the portions are also generous. We had a pleasant meal here and definitely recommend it to anyone looking for good, southern comfort food.

Able to come by this week and a great meal service. First of all to Kevin L who rather have a steak in Houston. That is fine Kevin just eat steak in Houston. I just had a 6 ounce filet that was exceptional and prepared correctly. I eat a filet regularly in great restaurants and familiar with this cut. I usually get Chicken Fried steak hamburgers but have wanted to try the steak. My husband had the same. Salads here are simple but fresh and blue cheese dressing home made. This place is consistent and great including the chocolate pie and I look for reasons to stop here when in the area.

Excellent food and service. It's always exciting when you go and you see the locals are there and recognized by the staff. Our server was exceptional and I wish I would have gotten his name. He was very busy but extremely attentive. This place was recommended by multiple people and it did not disappoint. We started off by having the onion rings which were delicious. I had the chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes and green beans and my friend had chicken fried steak mashed potatoes and cucumber salad. The food was over the top and the portions were huge that we took the rest of ours home and had it for breakfast the next morning. All homemade and I wish we would've saved room to have a homemade dessert but we were completely stuffed. I can't wait to go back as we were visiting for the round top antique show, but it will definitely be on my list to go back next year.

If you traverse Highway 290 between Austin and Houston, you have passed this place a million times and probably didn't even know it. Situated in the little town of Carmine, which is one of those towns that makes you slow down to 55 miles an hour, this place is absolutely incredible. The Burger? One of the best in Texas. The onion rings? They are famous for a reason. The chicken fried steak? The best I have ever had. The place is upscale but casual, so check your pretension at the door. Nice folks, good food, fair prices.

The lemon butter was put on heavy and it ran into the rice and steamed vegetables just added that extra pop that made me eat too much. Salad was right portion and fresh with extra dressing (and crackers) this is Texas we eat crackers not croutons. I've been to restaurants that I've had more salad on a hamburger than they brought out lol. The place was very clean. Waitress was very professional. My tea glass never went empty and I typically drink 4-5 glasses if they are smaller than a mason jar. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Mom got fried oysters and the mahi. I got to take her mahi home for supper. 6 oysters filled her up with the salad. I'll drive past all the chain restaurants to get here. But her mom, who also worked here, stepped in several times and helped her out. She was very personable and I'm sure she's an excellent server. Everything we ordered was delicious with one exception, well, two. The rice that seems to come with everything was a little strange. Not sure what was in it, but it was very different. None of us cared for it, but some people must like it since they serve so much of it. Again not taking stars off, but I didn't like it. The biggest disappointment was the grilled chicken. My mom and I both ordered it, and it was so dry and tough, we just took it to go for our dogs. My mom originally ordered the filet mignon, but they were out. So, she switched to chicken. The grilled chicken came with that rice, grilled veggies, and choice of Cole slaw or salad. My mom got salad, which was good. The rest of us got slaw, and it was also good. I thought rice and veggies were weird sides and would have preferred a baked potato. The other two people with us got the grilled salmon and the grilled catfish. Both were very good.

I was trying to pass time to avoid traffic into Houston so I decided to stop in Caldwell to do some boutique shopping. Caldwell has some awesome boutiques FYI!. I was looking for a late lunch/early dinner and decided I wanted some steak. Now this place is by no means fancy but it's definitely hometown feel and obviously a small town staple. I ordered the filet mignon with mashed potatoes and vegetables. Yall 12oz for $26 dollars is an absolute steal. I was worried about the quality due to the price but I was impressed! The meat was good the mashed potatoes tasted sweet though so not a fan of those. But for $26 I wasn't even complaining. Now back to these fried pickle, I text everyone I know "I just found the best fried pickles in Texas" as I scarfed them down. If you are ever passing through you must stop to grab a basket of them. All of this and my total was around $35! The service was efficient and friendly 10/10 recommend!
