Then the garlic mash potatoes and PERFECTLY cooked 10 oz sirloin came out. The steaks were cooked exactly to order. They had a pristine flavor, and the meat just melted in my mouth. The yeast roll looked like a roll but it was pretty heavenly too, especially with the steak drippings. Our server was super sweet and helpful! I have wanted to make it to Steak Night for a long time but I never seem to be in the area on a Friday or Saturday. This time I was able to arrange to be here on a Saturday expressly to visit Leona. It was a 2 hour drive down from Dallas but hey, it's an adventure! I was not disappointed. I got there about an hour before they opened and there were 30-40 people in line already. I grabbed a spot on one of the benches that line the porch and watched more people pouring in. Over the next hour the line got longer and longer. I definitely got there none too soon. At opening time the nice lady came out and started bringing in each party one at a time. It moves fast and I was seated pretty quickly. The place is pretty huge so they seat a lot of people at a time. Judy Lee was my very sweet server and she kept me checked on and my tea glass full the whole time The "salad bar" is pretty simple. Just lettuce with a few tomatoes and the obviously homemade dressings. There is also slaw which was VERY good. The steak came with a scoop of mashed potatoes and a yeast roll. The streak is definitely the star of the show. The standard size is 10 oz with the option to add additional oz's. I opted for a 14 oz version which was probably closer to 20. They don't cut you short by any means. I have to say that this was one of the best and most perfectly cooked steaks I have ever had. I have had my share of prime restaurant steaks and this rivaled them all. Juicy, tender and perfectly cooked. It had the largest rib cap of any steak I have ever seen. Simply delicious. A 4 hour round trip for dinner might be a bit much but really worth it for the experience. If I find myself somewhere a little closer I'll be doing it again. read more

When ordering a ribeye, the price is provided for 10 oz and increases by a set amount for every ounce over that, so you are able to choose the exact amount you want (and as much as you want)! I thought the steak here was delicious and a great deal. The meal also came with salad, a roll, and a large portion of cheesy mashed potatoes. This spot had been under my radar for so long and I finally made it there! I felt like I had to strategically plan the visit since I was only interested in their steak night which happens only on Fridays and Saturdays between 530pm and 9pm. The other day Leona General Store is open is on Thursdays, which is fried catfish night from 530pm to 830pm. They've got extremely limited hours, so be sure to plan it all out before making your way there. There are a row of parking spots right in front of the main entrance but plenty of street parking along it's side. The spots fill up very fast and people have lined up since early afternoon. I made it at 330pm, 2 hours before opening time on a Saturday and the line was about forty deep. I'm glad they have chairs for maybe like the first sixty or so in line, that helps a lot! When it opens for the evening, they ask for a single file line to be seated accordingly and you can begin feasting on the complimentary salad and coleslaw. These items are stationed at a few areas inside the restaurant and is help yourself. The greens were very basic and they throw in a few cherry tomatoes but very fresh. The slaw was also fresh and appetizing. To be honest, I went back for seconds. Our server was very nice and explained the menu to us with enthusiasm. Basically, the steak options are simple and they'll cook it to your liking and is served with a dinner roll and mashed potatoes. My group and I all ordered medium rare, but it seemed liked some were a little too well done. The quality of the steak though was A+ and very seasoned and flavorful. The dinner roll was soft and pillowy while mashed potatoes were satisfying. It was a hearty meal everyone ended up enjoying. The night ended with a peach cobbler but they have a few different cobbler options for you to choose. It is a small portion but also very tasty. The vintage feels and the decor inside is pretty unique as this place was originally a general store and next door is the pharmacy. Since it is old school, the servers write down your order on a notepad and its the check that you'll have to bring up front to the register to pay/tip. Good thing is you can tap to pay and tip too. We made it inside on the first run and as soon as we were seated our sweet waitress come over and asked us 3 questions. 1. What would you like to drink? You can have tea, water, or a canned soft drink. 2. What size steak do you want? We ordered the 10 oz but oh my it was a lot bigger than a 10 oz. 3. How would you like that cooked? Medium rare of course!!! After our waitress leaves, we make our way over to the salad bar. You grab your little bowl and fill it with a premix salad. They have 3 different dressings to pick from. Ranch, Italian, and it looked like French maybe? They have club crackers, so we grabbed a couple along with some butter pats and went to our table. Our steaks arrived about 15 minutes later PERFECTLY cooked with a side of red mashed potatoes with the skins still on and yeast roll. Simplicity at its finest. It was sooooo good. Me and my kiddo were coming back from Buffalo working all day. Then I recalled it was Saturday, which is steak night at Leone General Store. So we decided to stop in. The steak house is open from 1730 to 2100 hrs. We arrived 15 minutes early, and wow was the line long. I observed lots of people with ice chests full of ice cold beer. Why they wait, they hydrated! So If it's your first time bring some cold libations. (Don't drink and Drive). Once the opened the line moved pretty quickly. Inside gave off the ambiance of an old western movie. The restaurant is huge inside with plenty of seating. We sat down they took are order and they refilled my glass of tea immediately. Looks folks they are cooking a lot of steaks for people. It takes a little time for perfection. So we waited for about an hour but the steak was butter folks. If you're from the city and want fast service or NYC or CA ect forget about it. You're in the country now. The people behind me were annoying. The kept complaining about how long it took for the meal to come out. Go to a fast food restaurant! This is the place to be if you want a steak. The menu is simple, on Friday and Saturday it's steak, chicken or pork chop. Sides are always a roll, mashed potatoes and salad. You pick your size steak. We started off with a bit of a drive (2 hrs) but it was scenic and country--my favorite kind of trip! We went on a Saturday and arrived about an hour and a half before opening, which put us 4th and 5th in line. The ribeye was flavorful and generous, and it came with unlimited salad, mashed potatoes, and bread. For dessert, we tried both the pecan cobbler and blackberry cobbler--both were warm, sweet, and absolutely hit the spot. From the outside, the restaurant looks small, but once inside we were surprised by how spacious it actually was. Horrible service. 2 of us were sat at a 6 top. Not our fault. A young lady took our drink order, But I guess Dorinda just didnt think we were worth the effort. Took our food order and never spoke to us again. Didnt even look at us the entire time we were there. Another lady brought our food and dropped the check and that was it. Nobody even came by to check on us for the rest of our meal. They tried to say that she was just busy, but we watched her with her other tables, she was friendly and attentive. Their hours are a bit weird though and they're only open like 3 days a week (Thurs- Sat 5:30-8:30/9), so aligning the drive to make it there during those hours while making it to our destination in a decent hour is a bit tough to say the least, but the stars aligned and we finally managed to do it. This place is pretty big for how it looks outside! The interior is decorated with animal skulls, at least where we were sitting and our toddler did not like it. There's a salad bar and they ask what size steak you want and how you like it cooked. Comes with a salad and a roll! Steak was seasoned and cooked well, and you can get any size you like! After driving for two hours I was beginning to wonder if this was really going to be worth it and I'm happy to say it absolutely was. I would have driven 4 hours for this steak and experience. We arrived at 3:30PM on a Saturday and there was already a line formed on the porch. People were playing cards, drinking wine and beer, and everyone was conversing. There was also a good amount of people in the store directly next door, where they served coffee and ice cream, as well as sold wine and other things. Once The General Store opened, each party was welcomed and let it in one at time by a very pleasant hostess. Our waitress was Erica Lee, who was full of personality. We ordered our steaks (med. rare) and within 15 minutes we had them right in front of us. There was a salad bar, but we skipped it, knowing darn well what we came for. I ordered the 10oz and my husband ordered the 14. My husband devoured his steak and finished mine. It wasn't that it wasn't good, it was just SO big. The steak was excellent. Barely any effort needed to cut through it. The quality of meat was terrific, and it was cooked to perfection. I'm STILL thinking about that steak. A yeast roll and potato's accompanied the hand cut rib eye. Both were excellent sides. We finished our meal off with peach cobbler topped with ice cream and a berry cobbler with ice cream. Unfortunately, we were both in a meat high and totally forgot to snag a picture, but trust me, they were the perfect way to end the meal. Before I finish, I just want to comment on the interior. It's just as cool as the outside. There's plenty of seating for well over 100 people so don't let the long line discourage you, but I still would suggest getting there early to get the full experience. You can go next door to the soda shop. Everyone is drinking (it's BYOB) and just having a great time. Everyone was super nice. Outside of a dry aged steak, this is the best restaurant steak I've had. It's similar to the ribeye at Texas Roadhouse but it's seasoned so well! I'm definitely coming back. I'd say don't bother, but...it's something to pass the time until the steaks arrive. The steaks. Oh. My. Almost everyone at our table got the 12oz ribeye, medium rare. I'm ashamed to say that I finished every bite, as did all the male participants. Fantastic steak, straight up -- no trickeration, no truffle garlic butter. Also, plenty of fat left in -- if you're used to 6 oz. filets, well, welcome to reality. Don't think I've ever had a better ribeye. A couple of folks ordered the pork steaks (you get two) -- unbelievably good as well. Would be hard for me to order, knowing what I now know about the steaks, but...they're fantastic. Side of somewhat abused new potatoes, soaked in butter, was yummy, along with a nice dinner roll. Didn't even try dessert -- maybe another time. Note on drinks -- the General Store doesn't serve alcohol, but you can bring in your own wine or, as a neighboring table did, your own 50 oz. Buc-ee's cups. The little shop next door also sells wine by the bottle for your convenience. We were perfectly fine with iced tea -- the steaks are the stars of this show. I guess I can't really ask for more as they were really busy. All the other guests were very friendly, which helps as we waited in line for longer than we ate our food! The food was good but not worth a 2 hour wait plus the drive there and back. I recommend it if you like a fatty steak. I think they only do ribeye. We took our first trip to Leona's 6/29 because my husband saw a YouTube post about this place. Hubby thought they opened at 4:30 but when we arrived at 4:45, we saw a long line waiting for the 5:30 opening . Let me say the wait was worth it! This was one of the best steaks I have ever had. The menu is simple, there isn't one.....Friday and Saturday is steak. You tell them what ounce you want (going up in 2oz increments) and the level of doneness. Comes with mashed potatoes and a roll and a trip to the salad bar ( just lettuce and dressing). My steak was definitely over 14oz and was thicker than my husband's and son's. Mine wasn't quite as tender as theirs but it was so good that you don't need steak sauce. The rolls were so good that we also got a half dozen to go. I will come back again for sure! The place is BYOB so that is great if you'd like beer or wine. Other than steak, you can get a chicken breast or pork but we didn't drive from Houston for anything but a steak.
