Visited yesterday for the first time. Actually had lunch across the street at Pint and Barrel and had a couple there suggest going to Oxbow for a piece of pie. My wife got the French Coconut. It was very tasty but oh so very rich. Definitely a nibbling pie, a little now and a little later due to the richness of it. I had the Key Lime and was honestly not impressed at all. Actually didn't even finish my pie. Have eaten much better Key Limes at various other locations all across the country. Getting in line for the annual Thanksgiving pie, has become a tradition! You get to meet so many nice people! I got in line at 8:15 for the 10am opening. Oxbow serves the best pies I've ever had. There is a lot to choose from. I ordered a slice of lemon ice box pie. My friend ordered a slice of buttermilk pecan pie. We also shared a piece of tres Leches cake. All three were insanely delicious. I was interested in their buttermilk pie, but they had run out. I've had really good buttermilk pie somewhere else, but it's a tricky dish to make. Most restaurants that serve it, make it very bland. So, I was betting Oxbow had mastered it. I had a bite of my friend's buttermilk pecan and it was out of this world good. These folks know what they're doing! There was so much selection, we had to order more to go. She ordered a slice of turtle cheesecake and I ordered their popular chocolate meringue. We saved them for dessert after dinner that night. Wow, we were amazed again. Also attached to the bakery, is a really neat antique shop. Lots of charming items there at reasonable prices. The people who worked there were very nice and helpful... Oxbow Bakery was completely under water due to the East Texas flood, Friday, April 29th. Fortunately the Oxbow was closed but, many of the old Palestine antiques/artifacts and the Antique Bakery equipment was damaged/lost. =( Many of the restaurants and Cotton Gin Bar will surely make a come back. This place had a steady stream of people in and out, including what appeared to be some regulars cackling in a booth together. (Life hack - I watched this hopping place from across the road at another restaurant, slipped over here for dessert to bring back to the patio of the restaurant. I regret nothing). Some of the pies are good . We did have our favorites . We went to Palestine to ride the train. We were told to be at the train depot by 10:15. The Oxbow bakery opens at 10:00 AM I called and spoke with the son . I explained our situation about our time frame because of the train and told him we wanted to buy pies. We were planning to take our ice chest to keep them cold while we were on the train. Train didn't come back until 3:00 So I asked if they could open a little earlier .. He informed me "We open at 10:00" and he also said ," We are closing at 1:00 for a private event " Well that didn't matter to me because the train didn't get back to the depot until 3:00 and I knew they would be closed .. Every time we have been in Rusk or Palestine we have gone there .I think we have tried every pie. They were all ok ,but we did have our favorites . I'm sorry to say we will NOT be returning . I'm sure they are big enough or sell enough they won't miss our business .. I thought it was maybe to expensive for me to go back again, but after tasting it, I know it was worth the cost. It basically cost as much as you would pay for a dessert at a place like Chilis.
