Don't taste your time! Waited well over an hour for our food when they were not busy just for the food to come out cold. On a Saturday during lunch time? Unacceptable. This place was very good. My coworker and I stopped here for lunch while passing through and there were a decent amount of people here. It's seat yourself and, in addition to the daily special, there's a larger menu with burgers, sandwiches, Mexican food, and your typical fried Southern entrees. My coworker and I each ordered a BLT, hers with fries (you can also choose onion rings or tater tots), and mine with an upgrade of fried okra. Our server was really nice, but the food did take awhile to come out. Everything was delicious, though, and I was given a ton of okra. Payment is taken at the front counter. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here, but this part of the state has few options and it was a good choice. If I find myself back in the area at lunch time again, I would come back. read more

my family and i are taking a road trip and we're passing through marquez. we were looking for a place to have brunch and we drove by this restaurant and we decided to give it a chance. i was super skeptical because the outside of it gave a bad impression, but i still tried it. my family and i (4 of us) were the only ones in there- maybe because it's christmas eve- and the restaurant is very open so it felt awkward talking, it almost felt like we shouldn't talk. i took the safe route and just had the chicken tenders. they were good for chicken tenders, nothing crazy. the fries were very yummy, though. i couldn't stop eating them. i think i would come here again, if i ever happen to be in town. despite it's unappealing exterior, the brandin' iron cafe is a cute and simple yet tasty restaurant. i would suggest this place to someone looking for a family style restaurant! read more

We make a point to always stop by here. The food here is always good. I love their homemade peanut and pecan brittle at the register. The fried catfish isn't "fishy" tasting at all. Their coleslaw is definitely homemade and tarter sauce (I don't typically like tarter sauce) is sooo good! We always order the fried pickles and also get the okra extra crispy! read more

For a small town diner, the Brandin Iron is wonderful. My husband and I were driving through town and thought we wold stop and give it a try. The service was amazing, pleasant atmosphere and the food came out quick, hot and delicious. Be sure to try the onion rings. The food was quite good, and portions were large for the price. It was clean, restrooms were clean, and there are lots of tables. They may need a few more servers because we never got any refills on water. When the server showed back up she didn't even ask if we wanted refills on our empty glasses. We were in Old Union this week relaxing at our lake house and were looking for somewhere new (to us) to eat. I am SO happy we stopped here. Everything was fresh and their ranch dressing is amazing. We ordered onions rings as an appetizer, plus the chicken fried chicken with fries and pinto beans, as well as the steak finger basket with fries and okra. Everything was SO good.. and while this seems like a small detail, I was most excited that their oil tasted fresh. Not sure if you've experienced old oil taste with fried food but it's nasty. Allot of influence from the streets. It's pretty quiet. The maintenance people are pretty awesome. Be careful and look at your apartment before you sign your lease. You may not be able to get Internet service at all ever. read more

I had the steak finger basket, husband had a cheeseburger. Steak fingers were big and very tender. Gravy and fries were good also. Husband says burger was moist and not smushed to death. Wait staff were nice and friendly. All-in-all wonderful experience! We will stop here again next time we are driving through! read more

My husband and I decided to share the 14 Oz NY Strip steak (an evening special, priced at $19.99). We ordered it medium-well, with twice baked potatoes and grilled mixed vegetables. It was served promptly, but medium to medium-rare. The waitress took it back to be cooked a little longer. It came back medium, but we kept it Unfortunately the sides were already cold. The steak had good flavor bit was too grisly/fatty for our taste. We will come back when in the area again, but will probably try something else next time. read more

Surprised (in a good way) to see that this place already had a review! Last weekend my husband and I drove from Bastrop to Tyler for a wedding, and Marquez was around the point where we became hungry, so we stopped at the Brandin' Iron. I ordered the chicken strip basket (came with fries) and he ordered the "chicken fried fish sandwich" with beans and coleslaw. Both of us had sweet tea to drink. The tea was okay, not great. Interestingly, the place appeared to have both fountain sodas and bottled/canned ones. Food was Sysco-type ... edible but that's about it. The meats were clearly from frozen ... we'd been hoping for some good home cooking. I was happy that my meal came with cream gravy (the menu didn't indicate this), and the gravy didn't have much taste, good or bad. I asked for some barbecue sauce as well and was given a plastic bottle of generic KC Masterpiece type stuff. It helped though. My fries were okay, kinda like thin underdone fast-food fries (good thing I like them like that). My husband felt the same way about his food. If this place was in Austin I'd only give it 2 stars, but in a town of under 300 people, where the only choices for dining out are probably this restaurant or prepackaged gas station sandwiches, it warrants 3 stars. The Brandin Iron did the job for us on our trip, as we got full for a reasonable price, and weren't sick afterward or anything. Perhaps other menu items involve fresh ingredients or other points of interest. read more

Driving through on way home from Austin area. We had the meatloaf plates and a Philly cheesesteak sandwich. Food was great and came out pretty quick. Most amazing part of visit was stupid me left my purse at table. I realized it 2.5 hours down the road. I called and the waitress had my purse and said they would mail it to me. Was going through town about lunch time and saw the Brandin' Iron. We had been here before, and it had been mediocre (maybe a 3 star quality) but now it has since improved. I ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich which comes just like it sounds: chicken strips dipped in buffalo sauce with lettuce and tomato and your choice of mayo/ranch. The sandwich wasn't bad, but due to the plain white bread it came on, the sandwich was soon deconstructed. Brother got Steak Finger basket which was really good. Super fast service! Appeared to be not much around and stopped in to try in route to Temple area. Had their special of Chicken fried steak, 2 sides and a roll or cornbread ($9.81). Large dining area, very popular with oilfield workers. They serve all the Texas country standards such as burgers, chicken fried steak, fried chicken, fried catfish(on Fridays), and some steaks and fried shrimp. The burgers are OK, the chicken was too greasy for my taste. My favorite here is the fried catfish. I am not a big fan of fried catfish because it usually has a muddy taste, but it's only rarely that I get a muddy tasting piece here. Never tried a steak here. read more
