Looks are deceiving! Visited the area for a softball tournament and there's not many options for lunch to choose from. At first glance, we thought, uh nope, but then around back it looked more inviting so we stopped. Service was great and everyone was friendly. Food was very good! We've frequented Catfish Friday all you can eat, many times over the past few years, and it was good, but the last couple of times, the catfish was mushy, quality has slipped a little. We've been to Saturday steak night, steak was nothing to write home about. Hamburgers are really good! Service has always been relaxed, 90% self-service, which adds to the charm. Several times, we just tell the cashier what we had, because we didn't get a bill when we're ready to leave. That's all okay with me! Whenever we have guests, we have always brought them in to enjoy a meal at New Baden General Store. What's not okay with me, is when I come in with guests, I ask the waitress right up front to be sure and bring the bill to me, but then she ignores my repeated request and gives it to my guests!! Came here during our break in between baseball, so glad we did! You walk back in time a bit with the decor but in the best way possible as I just loved it! BEST PICKLE CHIPS, they are fried to perfection and are actual pickle chips! We also ordered a BLT, Bacon Cheeseburger (was huge) and chicken fried chicken steak with a side of fries and onion rings! Nice hidden gem by Franklin Baseball fields which is where we spend a lot of weekends! Can't wait to work through this menu and get here for breakfast! Service was great, real homey feel! Returned today, had cheeseburger and fried okra, very good. Okra was lightly breaded, hot and crunchy. Cheeseburger cooked perfectly with fresh vegetables and bun, hot off the grill. A companion had steak fingers, they were so big she could only eat one, and said it was very good. read more

Wow! We go to Franklin annually for our son's baseball. We've tried different places to eat, including driving to Hearne. This beats all of those places. We were hesitant because the pictures mainly show fried food, but they have a very large menu, with lighter fare as well. Be sure to get an ice cream cone. The people are great. We've been coming to this place for a couple of years, my son has quite a few baseball tournaments in Franklin and we enjoy coming here after a great day at the fields. I actually can't believe I hadn't posted a review on this one before. Their burgers are AMAZING!!!! Probably the tastiest burgers I've ever had in my life, their chicken fried steak, and other options are pretty darn good too. You can also quench your thirst with their 32oz cup of sweet tea, and to top it off enjoy some blue bell ice cream for dessert. The staff is super friendly, and the place has cool memorabilia. When in Franklin there's no other place to be. Sorry no picture, I can't think on anything but getting my chumps on that burger. read more

Wow! This is sone good stuff y'all. Southern comfort food all around. The reagents is not your average place, I absolutely loved it! We had the check fried chicken and it came with 2 seeded, did the fried okra and mash potatoes. Yummy! Y'all - don't let the cover fool you! This place is legit. Kids had the burgers - so good also! Visiting family out at Camp Creek. Gram said to stop by The New Baden General Store for awesome burgers! I had the Patty Melt and my daughter had the cheeseburger. We shared the fried jalapeños. The burgers were big and cooked perfectly. The jalapeños had a good amount of heat with some ranch dressing to cool them down. And there's no better way to end a meal than with Blue Bell ice cream. REALLY good burgers and fries served up in a 1906 building made of handmade bricks. Be forewarned: these are monster burgers; the meat patty is 3/4 of an inch thick, and they don't skimp on the vegetables. Service is friendly and the atmosphere is definitely country. Probably the last time we go there. Service is declining. Hard to find good help nowadays i reckon waited 30 minutes in line for catfish. Finally came four people in front of us and at least 15 people behind us. Enough fish for the four people in front of us and four togo orders were filled. We found this place when going through from Tyler to Austin. The restaurant is in a quirky old building that we guessed had had several "lives." Very rustic! Picnic tables and paper towel rolls on the tables. We ordered burgers and patty melts, all hot and tasty! At least a third pound of beef on each sandwich. This is one of those places popular with locals, and several of them came up to us to talk while we were eating. As we were walking over for refills on our tea, we saw an older gentleman holding court at a table, looking like he owned the place. Well, he did! He motioned to us to talk with him, and he ended up showing us a picture album of what he had done to make the place a restaurant. If we are ever on Hwy. 79 going to Tyler again, we will certainly stop by this place another time. read more
