We stopped here after being up since 5 AM, driving an hour and a half to my daughter's softball tournament, and after a long day, this was the service we received. My husband specifically ordered his stuffed potato with NO sour cream. When it came out wrong, I politely let our server know. She stared at me blankly for what felt like a minute, and when I asked how long it would take to remake it, her response was simply, "I don't know." No apology. No solution. No effort. My husband finally said, "It's fine," and she replied, "I'll just take it off the ticket." I was a server for 5 years. Your entire job is serving people and taking care of customers. Mistakes happen, but not caring is unacceptable. I tip well when people try. Today, I left $0 because the complete lack of concern was impossible to ignore. Stopped at this diner when passing through Hearn, Tx on the way to Lubbock. What a great surprise to see that they were listed as a top spot by Texas Monthly! This is southern comfort food. Burgers, stuffed potatoes and chicken fried steaks. There are also soup and salad options as well as some soups and sandwiches. We all had the Fried Catfish that comes with a choice of two sides. Very generous portions here, so make sure you are hungry! The waitress we had was delightful and very friendly with good recommendations. We will stop by again on our next trip. read more

We were so sad we didn't get to go tonight! We walked in around 7 so glad we made it, when online and their front door said they close at 8. They were already cleaning up and told us they were closed. We said, but it says you close at 8. They promptly said, we close at 7 tonight. Tough way to run a business. We looked over the menu as we waited for our server to return. And we waited. And waited. And waited. After 10 minutes we left. We have no idea if the food was any good. We've been to this cafe many times over the years. The food is decent, and the wait staff is pleasant. Today's lunch was exceptional! From our server, the cheerful, efficient, respectful Samantha to the food, I thought it all worked to fuel us quickly to get back on the road. As you can see from my photos, the steak was a good thickness. The fried catfish was fresh and crunchy, with house-made tartar sauce that had a nice amount of pickle pieces. **This place does NOT serve breakfast -- something to keep in mind if you're visiting!** My fiancé and I stopped in for a bite while we're passing through to our wedding venue. Since it opens at 10:00, we were hoping for some breakfast -- but the only serve lunch. Not a big deal, but a little disappointing. We had the friend zucchini, the chicken fried steak sandwich with fries, the burger with fries, and coffee. The coffee is some of the worst I've ever had -- definitely avoid! It's weak and just tastes like hot water. The rest of the food was pretty good. Nothing stunning, but not bad either. The fries were the best part of everything we tried. The service was decent and we got our food quickly. The restaurant itself is pretty dated, but it's clean -- everything you can expect from an old-fashioned Southern cafe. There's also a 3% upcharge on all tickets if you pay with card instead of cash. Wasn't a big fan of that either. All in all, nothing terrible, but nothing impressive. read more

Stopped here on my way to the coast and had a fantastic experience! I ordered the lunch portion of the pork chop, and my husband had the lunch portion of the chicken fried steak. Both dishes came with huge portions and were absolutely delicious. The breading on the chicken fried steak was perfectly seasoned. The service was excellent, and the staff was very attentive. Bunch of car club friends were looking for grub between Austin and Jefferson, Texas. We picked Hearne as our meet up spot for lunch. Really nice Texana style restaurant with lots to choose from. Might as well have some complimentary cornbread and rolls! Our table totally destroyed the basket of bread; prolly could have eaten three baskets lol. I had fried catfish with mashed taters (brown gravy) and fried okra. Good stuff except I prefer dill to sweet pickles in my tartar sauce. GF had the chopped steak topped with grilled onions and brown gravy. Sides for her were red beans and rice and spinach (canned). Also in photos my buddy's modded chef salad with blackened fish. I was hyped to try a good ole fashioned diner in a small town in Texas. I had high hopes of eating a delicious homestyle hamburger just like mama used to make. The reviews for Johnny Rebs Dixie Cafe were good so I took a short detour to grab a bite to eat. The waitresses were friendly enough when it came to greeting us and serving our food; however, I felt uneasy because I saw absolutely no African-Americans working in this restaurant. This struck me as odd because Hearne, Texas, sho' enough has plenty of African-Americans living and working in that town. Perhaps, things would have looked differently on a different day of the week. On to the food. We ordered one hamburger and one cheeseburger with extra crispy French fries and two lemonades. My beef patty was thin and slightly overcooked, but I ate it. Our dinner cost over $30.00. The burgers were edible, but not delicious. The fries were neither hot nor extra crispy. The complimentary bread basket was a plus. The cornbread muffins were delicious. The cornbread was sweet with good texture and just enough crunchiness on the outer edges of the muffin. Overall, I rate my dining experience as a 2.5. read more

Decided to stop here while on a weekend trip with family and we are definitely impressed. Service was a just a little slower than expected but overall good. The time from ordering to getting our food was less than 10 minutes which was outstanding for how busy they were. I got the charbroiled chicken with black eye peas and carrots and everything was delicious as already stated. The pre-meal cornbread was also very delicious just the perfect sweetness. It's no wonder this place is one of the busiest places in town. This place will definitely be on our list next time we are passing through. read more

My favorite historically decorated cafe in this country town. Everyone, including the customers, are so friendly. Reminds me of where my Dad is from! I want to live in Hearne because of this restaurant. One time my car broke down over an hour from home, and the restaurant let me stay and charge my phone late at night until the tow truck came from miles and miles away. They checked on me and were conversational like nurses. If all waitstaff were so caring! While there I started to get an appetite, and they recommended the chicken fried chicken with potatoes and beans and it was so good! I came back tonight, and as usual they were busy, and saw Megan who was one of the waitresses who helped me. She remembered me and the details from so long ago! The girl at the register was also sweet and friendly. She recommended the juicy chicken fried chicken sandwich. The thick and crispy batter onion rings were $1.79 extra. They include the ketchup and mayo in the bag without asking. Everything came just like I ordered. They gave me a roll and cornbread as well, although it took a while to come out. They must have made it fresh because they were very chewy and flavorful. I had leftovers ... You get a lot for your money here. Dixie is very easy to find in a great location. They have plenty of parking. And don't forget the event postings in the hallway! Go give them a try and experience southern hospitality! read more

Stopped by here on our way home for dinner and so glad we did. Home cooked dishes that were delicious. My husband got a grilled chicken sandwich with cheese and mushrooms. Absolutely fantastic flavor he said. I got the vegetable plate with loaded baked potato fried okra black eyed peas and spinach. Everything was great and tasted like it came out of my grandma's kitchen. We took banana pudding for the road and it was also really good. We were seated and waitress asked what we were drinking. Brought our beverages out with a basket of cornbread and yeast rolls. The cornbread was sweet and a bit on the dry side. The yeast rolls were not fresh and tasted that that they'd been around for awhile. The bread offerings were not even warm. I stopped at this location today and left highly upset... not with the service, not with the food nor the restaurant itself. But the way I was singled out and treated by one of the staff, which appeared to be the person in charge. I've been passing by this restaurant for several years with work, and decided to stop and check it out. I have a medical condition which requires me to need the assistance of a service dog. He is a 120 lb Black German Shepherd. Although not required by the ADA nor needed, I do keep him vested along with his credentials clip to his vest, just to avoid any issues or questions. I have never had any issues at restaurants, hotels, or airports during my travels, and usually people are more impressed and interested in him, due to his size, professionalism, and training... he just has a commanding presence. Today at the Dixie Cafe we were waiting to be seated behind some other patrons. When it came our turn, the man said he was putting us in the back, because some people don't like dogs... but not him because he had 14 at home. The back was a understatement... he seated me in a completely different room, in the back corner by myself, isolated from the main dining area. I even made the comment to him.... I don't know what's more offensive... the comment about some people don't like dogs, or the fact that you seated me in another room by myself. I should have just walked out and took my business elsewhere, but I know now, you never really understand how it feels to be discriminated against until it happens to you! I know the gentlemen at the Dixie Cafe needs to go onto the ADA and restaurant owner.com and educate himself on the matter to avoid a future lawsuit. read more

The chicken fried steak, steamed broccoli, fried okra, and spinach sides were all tasty 5 star goodies, my wife's chicken and dumplings only rated 3.5....she's an expert and the taste just wasn't top notch. Came here for Breakfast. They only serve breakfast on Saturdays & Sundays. Breakfast is over at 10:30 AM. (See my Breakfast menú photo) Awesome diner with above excellent service. I ordered the Cowboy Breakfast - Chicken fried steak, 2 eggs, hash browns and a biscuit (See my photos). Eggs and hash browns tasted great. I don't know what was up with the chicken fried steak but it was not tasty. And the biscuit was hard, possibly over baked. Would prefer a flaky biscuit. The waitress was very fast and very patient. She was nice enough to even offer to give me a to go cup for my drink when I was paying at the register. I want to give a 5 star because of the excellence service but I have to give a 4 star due to the sub par meal. I would come back to give them another try. read more

This restaurant is worth a stop if you are traveling Texas and going through Hearne. Don't be put off by the name of the diner. Its decor is decidedly local history photos. Almost nothing here celebrates what the name might imply. The food is good home cooking. The grilled catfish was substantial and tasty, on a sufficient bed of rice. Lots of variety in the choices among beef, chicken, and seafood, as well as veggies, and prices are about what you would expect, even adding the non-cash up charge. Didn't have dessert, but they sounded appropriate for a diner like this: cobbler, banana pudding, and three kinds of pie. We left satisfied, if not particularly inspired. read more
