Just passing through decided to stop we were pleasantly surprised all the advertising on the walls and the menu was up on the corners looking at the ceiling. It has the 1920s vibe decorations. It is a diner small cozy friendly staff. Food was good. She ordered breakfast. I ordered lunch. We'd like to share. We were delightful , surprised we would stop by next time we drive-through. What happened to the classic diner experience? The days of old-school hospitality, homemade comfort food, and genuine service seem to be slowly fading away. Unfortunately, this visit felt more like convenience than cooking. The mashed potatoes, corn, and even the roll have been reheated in a microwave. I also watched a meatloaf dinner taken out of the microwave and then returned into it. I hope it wasnt served later. The country-fried chicken tasted and looked like a frozen, pre-made product rather than something freshly prepared. I say this with confidence as the server/cook just grabbed it out a drawer and threw it in fryer. The gravy had the most flavor on the plate, although it tasted like a standard mix rather than house-made. The rest of the meal was bland and forgettable. We are in from out of town. Came from Tampa to be with family getting married in the area. I rate this as two stars because of the quality of customer service and the food quality. My family of 3 came in(for the second time) to this place for a quick breakfast from our air BnB. We watched 2 tables get served before us walking in. In particular, another family who sat at the breakfast bar had 3 meals come out before ours. We waited about an hour for our plates. We had to find the waitress and ask her to get us drinks vs being greeted upon walk-in. Now, this is our second time in here, this rural area doesn't have other options. We had a classic breakfast, a pick3 and a country breakfast. The place had about 3 tables of people, so it was not busy. Scrambled eggs and pancakes shouldn't take that long. The country steak was served without gravy. Came out as a side 10minutes after our plates were there. The hashbrowns were basically burnt on all 3 plates and looked/felt/crunch like lays potato chips. In conclusion, this place was cute, menus written on walls (innovative cost saving measure) and had potential. Moderate prices. I can't help but feel like we were treated differently here. I'm not going to allude to any rationale other than rural, small town, America nuances for out-of towners. That was the vibe. Wasn't very welcome. From walking in to paying was just cumbersome. I want to like it, but I don't. I have heard good things from family members that go here, but my experience was less than ideal. We came here for lunch last week. There were 7 of us. When we came into the diner, only 4 booths were occupied by patrons, so about 8 people in the diner before our party of 7. I could see that there was 1 cook and 1 waitress. The waitress waited for us to go all the way to the other side of the diner before she stopped us and notified us that it was an hour wait before we could get our food if we decided to stay and eat. She was snippy about it too. I asked her if she had any appetizers that didn't require cooking (thinking chips and salsa kind of deal). She answered rather curtly with a "no". Ok, I can feel if you don't want me and my business. It's fine, I'll take my party and go elsewhere and I did. Such a shame because I heard great things about this place, how the waitress (not the one above, a different one) remembers repeat customers and what they like to eat. In conclusion: Maybe try going here for dinner (instead of lunch) and before the dinner rush? I would not come here again, just keep driving to Bryan/College Station. read more

I drive through Hearne occasionally and had been wanting to try Penny's Diner, but I'd seen the 2.9 stars rating here and was leery of the place. But yesterday I needed some breakfast on my way back to Houston, so I gave it a whirl. It's a cute place with standard diner food...exactly what I was looking for. I had two eggs, sausage, hashbrowns and toast. And eggs and the sausage were a little overcooked, but still good. They have and odd way of cooking their hashbrowns. They smash them against the griddle with a press so they come out as a crispy sheet of potatoes. It's interesting. And fairly tasty. And let me say, thank you for actually bringing butter to the table so I can butter my own toast. I hate when restaurants butter your toast for you because they never give you enough. The one problem I had with Penny's is that stupid menu. They don't have paper menus or even QR code menus. Their menu is on a long white board that runs the length of the dining room above the front windows. So you have to pace the store looking for what you want to eat, hovering over people who are at their tables eating their meals. The waitress kind of follows you while you make up your mind, which means she isn't taking care of the other customers. I know the management or owner is trying to be quirky and cute, but it's really just annoying for everyone involved. read more

About the worst ever!!! It's a faux 50's diner. No menus. It's written on the ceiling with colored markers so you have to walk all around to read the different items. There are no prices, so your burger or omelette could just as easily be $50 as 99 cents. I went in for something to go with my hungry and severely handicapped wife(rarely left alone) waitednin our hotel room directly behind the place. The girl who initially tried to take my order seemed to be a new trainee, but had absolutely no enthusiasm for doing her job at all. The more I tried to sinplify my orderyhe more bamboozled she became, finally the other waitress and the cook got involved they got close to what I was asking for. The cook, had another order ahead of mine, 2 people it looked like. When I started ordering their order had been taken, but he had not yet begun cooking it. After a minute or two, he finally started on their order. He cooked their entire order, plated it, and sent it out before he even looked at my ticket. Then he got involved helping a waitress with a cash register issue. 15 minutes after I gave my order, he had not even pulled the eggs for the omelette. When it was done, I scurried back to my wife who was totally freaked out about my lengthy absence for an order that waffle house would have gotten done before I could take a deep breath. We stopped in here on our way to College Station because the rain was delaying us and we were getting hungry. This place has been around for a while, but this was our first time to stop in. It's a diner setup and needs to be rated accordingly. There were only two people working, so there was a bit of a wait. There were only a couple of patrons there when we arrived before the lunch rush, but it was close to half full by the time we left. We decided to split a Frisco Burger for $8.99 and add cheese to the tots for an additional charge. It was very sweet of them to split it for us, but by doing so it wasn't very even and there wasn't much to it. The sourdough was good and the meat was better than expected though. They forgot the cheese on the tots and ended up bringing us a cup of shredded cheese when we asked about it... so not melted like I had expected. They didn't check on us after that so it took a while to get the check and we didn't get refills. It tasted good though, and hit the spot to get us back on the road. I don't really feel that I needed to pay for a cup of unmelted shredded cheese since that's not really what I ordered. I mostly feel that way because the prices could have been $1 cheaper when you consider the actual portion size. Enough of a reason to not go? No, not really. However, value factors in to my rating just like food and service. On that note, I think I saw a sign in the entry way about several specials and their breakfast menu seemed reasonably priced, so it's probably not too hard to get a better value here.
